Dragon Origins #1

Dionna's Warrior

Rate this book
Tracing runemagic as a Pyromancer is a lot like being burned alive. So why does it feel so amazing?

Jaxon is an elite Warrior who has lost the most precious thing in the world.

Dionna is an average Pyromancer — a fire-wielding sorceress — hoping only to pass her Academy Assessment.

But all of Dionna’s concerns become trivial when the Academy is attacked by the Silithik Hivemind: a race of monstrous insects that kill most of her fellow students in a savage sneak attack.

As one of the few survivors, Dionna is thrust into a Dragon Quintelaide, an elite fighting unit made up of each of the fighting professions. She knows she’s not ready for such a drastic promotion — and the men she’s with, led by the massive Warrior Jaxon, know it too.

Yet Jaxon feels strongly protective of Dionna. And he can't shake the feeling...

As the war against the Silithik is reignited, Dionna needs to convince her Quintmates to trust her… while first learning to trust herself. Can she prove her worth as a Pyromancer? Or will Jaxon and the others abandon her for their own selfish mission?

DRAGON ORIGINS is the new Reverse Harem Dragon Shifter Romance series from Ruby Ryan. The prequel series to the GRYPHONS VS DRAGONS series, it has heart-stopping medieval warfare, an exciting and unique magic system, and all the steamy romance you’ve come to expect from a Reverse Harem. With five dashing men to choose from — the mighty Warrior Jaxon, the thoughtful Frost Mage Arthur, the precise Ranger Harry, the easy-to-smile Tinker Maze, and the sly and cunning Shadow Ryon — who will win Dionna's heart?

No HEA Heads Up

I read this book and was all set to read the rest of the series until it hit me to read the reviews for the last book before getting in any deeper. The author said something in her description of the second book that made me curious to find out what she meant about different peoples idea of an HEA. Read the reviews from the last book, then run from this series. The author pulled a Charlaine Harris / Sookie Stackhouse move and made a disastrous choice for an ending. No HEA here for our Quint. In fact, it seems to be quite the opposite. I am in fact removing my follow from this author and never reading another book by her. I refuse to get invested in an author that would do this to its readers. And I refuse to spend a week of my time only to be devastated by an awful ending. So yeah, before reading this book, read the last books reviews then decide if it's what you would ever want to read in a supposed romance!

Great Fantasy Book

Great start to a new fantasy series. We meet Dionna just as she is set to take her final assessment at the Academy. The problem is the school is attacked by the enemy in mass before she can. As one of few survivors she is forced to join and existing team that list one of its members in the same fight. This book is full of great world building, well developed characters, lots of action, and some intriguing relationship building that leaves me wanting more. I recommend it to fans of the genre. I really liked it so it gets 4/5 stars.

Not right for me.

This felt like a chore to finish this. The storyline was different from your average reverse harem romance, but it could have been better. The reactions and attitudes of the guys outside of Jax even after Dionna's saves also doesn't make me want to continue reading the series. The story just felt like it wasn't thought out and random events were thrown in. The issue plaguing the war was blatantly obvious which annoyed me as well.

This story shows all the MC’s can spend most the book being TSTL’s and still survive.....

O lord did I end up disliking this book....
3 stars ⭐️ for effort and imagination.....
Dionne seemed a tad smart at first, not overly cocky or full of herself but sadly that was only for the first chapter ,then the quickly became a VERY naïve TSTL running head first into danger and just generally running around making foolish assumptions and jumbling to conclusions.....
All six of these idiots run around making false assumptions and making foolish and cowardly choices....
After the sneak attacks the academy most are dead and one of those is Aly the pyromancer for the Quint Dionna is paired with being green and short sided etc. she believes it’s ALL her fault Aly is dead( being self absorbed and short sighted as she is ) of course the Quint ( Jax,Ryin,Maze,Arthur and Harry) all blame themselves as well....
Soo at first all our ” illustrious MC “hero’s /heroine” all want to be cowards and slink out without a word to anyone ....
I was disgusted with them all,I hoped ( but didn’t really care ) for redemption but for me it never truly came and what little did come I bit longer cared by the time it did.....
You one get Dionne’s p.o.v and Jaxon’s p.o.v I’m guessing each man gets a book and since he’s her “warrior” this was his book...
Possible spoilers ahead...

I’m not sure who disgusted me more Dionna and just deeply clueless and slow on the up take and just plain sickeningly naive she was,*like when the happen upon refugees near the Keep they are sent to protect ,she runs into the mass of hundreds and hundreds of ppl all displaced and hungry and hurting, soo hurting they are turning into a very angry mod eager to take out their hurt on someone to blame and yet she doesn’t recognize any of this and runs out into the mob with a small basket of food eager to away what little rations she has, seemingly clueless there is not way that little bit of food can help anyone but herself and of course gets knocked in her rear and has to be rescued before the grabbing and molesting turns into something worse....

I sit here skimming at that point shaking thinking , seriously ?!?!!
The guys try to sneak off yet again to get away from her because Not. A. Single. One. Of. These. So-Called. Mighty. Warriors. Has. The. Balls. To. Tell. Her. They. Don’t. Want. Her!
Those men disgusted me soo throughly , I just didn’t know what to do...
You are not A brave and mighty warrior if you don’t have the balls to tell a woman you don’t wand her, specially one you’ve only known for two days ...
Jaxon upset me the most,r his p.o.v. he’s the only we get to see and the only we get to see might have a conscious but he’s weak with the others ,bonded I know but he should have had the decency to be honest, but he was just a bigger coward than the rest... kissing Dionna one minute and lying to her and running the next....
And all that was 60-70% or soo of the book by the time we get to where they are rushing in like mad idiots off to their doom I can honestly say I didn’t care any more...
The h was a naive TSTL idiot 9/10’s of the time and the guys would rather face madness and death than try bonding w/another ....they didn’t know wether bonding to another would work or not but choosing to be suicidal cowards instead was NOT a respectable choice to me, specially being so dishonest about everything....
You know how it is when you start to hate a book even the littlest things get on you pr last nerve ?
Like the h finally having sex at the end of the book w/her warrior and during it saying she can feel his cock on her hair down there? I don’t know about her but I don’t have nerve endings in mine, geez who would you shave or wax ? And after sex she’s getting dressed and wants him to turn around because he “cant see her nakedness?” Huh ?
And even though it was a long scene it didn’t feel like it meant anything .
And unfortunately he told her she was seen as a hero for something she killed and not you have a naive TSTL going around thinking they re that... yeah, that’s right give the village idiot a big head, only good can come of that ....
I know I’m in the minority but you have a clueless girl, and suicidal dishonest cowards who stumble blindly around a long and winding story who seem to become hero’s almost accidentally on purpose more than anything else...
Just grateful, that while I may have wasted my time on this ,bit my money since it’s KU...

Intriguing read..

This was the first book I read by Ruby Ryan and WOW it was so good. Her writing is easy to be pulled into, and you won’t want to put it down.

Dionna’s Warrior will captivate you with all its angst, action, adventure, romance & some truly heartbreaking moments. We watch the heroine grow in confidence and self discovery. Even though the men at times shake all the progress she makes, they come together in the end, learning to really trust one another.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely read more works by this author. It certainly has a couple steamy sex scenes (would've LOVED a few more) and just the right amount of angst to keep you wondering if they'll make it in the end.

I want to get two things straight. First: Dionna’s Warrior is well written. And second: this is not a reverse harem. That’s not to say that the series isn’t going to become a reverse harem, as that is clearly where the story is going, but this first instalment does not even come close to being able to be called a reverse harem. I’m not someone who only reads RH books, I like to venture into other genres every other day but when it has the words REVERSE HAREM on the cover, I’m kind of expecting it to be a RH. Oh well, like I said before this book is well written.

Ryan is a strong storyteller who portrays emotions well. Her world building is intricate and bold, and her writing is detailed. Sometimes too detailed. I actually found myself skipping sentences just to move things along a bit. And while, the storyline is original and the characters interesting, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the game World of Warcraft (Silithid, Silithik??? No wonder I thought the bugs were familiar) - though, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I’d definitely recommend giving Dionna’s Warrior a go if you like fantasy, warfare and some steamy action. I’m glad I read this book, but I’m also glad I can now read something else - I won’t be continuing with the series at this stage.

Angry I wasted my time

Antagonists out of Starship Troopers/Ender's Game but not handled anywhere near as well. Italics every other paragraph at first, then only every other page..... it's annoying and loses impact quickly while making the characters sound childish. Then there's the insta love without any basis in reality, right after a disaster with none of the fallout addressed. This author has been added to my "NEVER AGAIN!!" list.

Dionna, a fire-wielding sorcerous “pyromancer”, was practicing with her class for the Academy Assessment testing the next day. She made an impressive hit on her target and hoped she would do as well the next day when it counted. Runetracing was a talent you were born with, and she was one of the lucky ones who had it. The order and speed of the tracing was critical – and sometimes lethal. Their Pyromaster instructor explained that their skillset was the most complicated. The other five professions invoked straightforward skills with little extra thought required. But the pyromancer had various decisions to make and a toolset of specific skills to evoke which would affect the survival or destruction of his or her team. In the back of their minds, they all knew that out in the real world, the current ceasefire with the enemy Silithik was not expected to last. They needed to train and be thoroughly skilled in their profession. And at this graduation, there was more pressure added: there were 3 positions for pyromancer to an elite Dragon Quintelaide unit – which normally required many years of field experience -- that would be filled with this year’s top (but inexperienced) graduates. Something was up.

Apart from the fast-paced, intriguing story line, the reader is given a close look at the personalities of the characters. Dionna, considering herself an average student, is eager and ready to start a new life when she successfully graduates from the Academy. But an unexpected attack by the Silithik hive kills many of her classmates. She is assigned to one of the elite fighting units, but well aware that she is not necessarily ready for this advancement. Will she hinder the others? Or will she gain her confidence and the respect of the others so that she can earn her place in the unit?

Dragon Origins, which this book is related to, is the new prequel to the GRYPHONS VS DRAGONS series which readers may remember involved totems each character had found in a cave in Belize that gave them powers and the ability to change into a fierce gryphon. It looks already that this series will be another excellent one for the author. Give it a try!

I think Paranormal Romance is the best way to describe it. Fantasy creatures, love, tension, hate, lots of fighting, loss of loved ones. This book has it all.

Firstly I wasn't too sure about it. The start was like boom and everything was happening. And you really need to try to understand everything going on. It's a whole new world and I should mention that it's not a 21st-century book so it medieval time if I remember correctly.

As the book went on, it didn't slow down. Oh no but it did get easier to follow and more of the romance and tension came in. I should probably tell you that it is said to be a poly book but I don't know about it. It's mentioned sure and it is a series so maybe in the next book? Oh, and there is like two (three if you count the dream) sex scenes.

I really liked the book, it was all new and usually, I don't read history books. It was a nice change and once more I learnt about another species what I always love.

About grammar, I can't remember seeing any mistakes. There might have been of course but I didn't notice any. I loved the length of the sentences and paragraphs. The writing style was nice too, not my absolute favourite but nothing terrible what hurts to read.

So after all, I liked the book, totally recommend. For a rating, I would say 5/10, purely cause I feel like if I would have been new to the scene it would have been a really hard read.

“Tracing runemagic as a Pyromancer is a lot like being burned alive. So why does it feel so amazing?”

If you are in the mood for a reverse harem romance, how could you possibly pass up a book with that line in its blurb? Frankly, Ruby Ryan is a new author for me, but based on her Dionna's Warrior (the first book in her Dragon Origins series), I’m promising myself that we will become well acquainted. This novel truly is, quite simply, wonderful. The tale had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot that was hot, exciting and imaginative. I’m not going to summarize that plot, as the blurb does an excellent job, but I’ll simply note that it’s really well executed. The cast, starting with Dionna, the lead here, and the yummy guys in her Dragon Quintelaide (warrior, frost mage, tinker, ranger, and “shadow”) are perfectly crafted (especially Jaxon, the warrior) and the rest of the supporting cast is also superb. Add in great world-building, with a really well thought out magic system (I love the runemagic) and an excellent “bad guy” (the monstrous insect Silithik Hivemind: brrrr) and you get a real winner. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend and I’m definitely looking forward to book 2.

I really enjoyed this entertaining reverse harem paranormal romance. The story is very well written with well-defined characters and an inspired world full of medieval warfare, uncommon magic and unique enemies. There is plenty of world-building as we are introduced to the individual characters and their distinctive skillset. The concept of a Quintelaide is new to me and I applaud the author for her imagination and originality. I appreciated the challenges faced by Dionna as she adapted to her new life as an elite soldier and struggled to overcome her insecurities of youth and her own worth. All made more difficult when she’s thrust into an established Dragon Quint, who ultimately don’t want her with them. There’s plenty of action, adventure, magic, some suspense and drama along with some steamy scenes. I found this new world to be both fascinating and compelling and look forward to the next adventure in the ‘Dragon Origins’ series.

This a fascinating start to a new series full of action, adventure, magic, and mystery. Dionna is a fledgling pyromancer who finds herself assigned to an existing Quientelade of five men who lost their previous pyromancer Aly while rescuing Dionna from an attack on her academy. The men are devastated by Aly’s loss and angry at being forced to bond with a new pyromancer and maintain the Quientelade. As a result, they are slow to accept Dionna, an inexperience newcomer, who feels insecure in her skills and uncertain of her place among the others. Needless to say, Dionna has her work cut out for her as she struggles to master her own skills and to win the acceptance of the men. This is a fast-paced story with an intriguing and unique plot. The characters are wonderful and well developed, and their emotions are easy to understand and empathize with. This is a great beginning to the series, and I can’t wait for more.

I really enjoyed this book. I connected with Dionna from the beginning. She is ready to start her new life after completing her training. It all goes so wrong from there. She loses so many of her friends and is pushed into a role she doesn't feel prepared for at all.

Jaxon is the warrior you really get to know the best in this first book. He and his fighting unit have lost a member and don't want a replacement. They want to honor their loss. He is attracted to Dionna but wrestles with his loyalty to the others.

I really enjoyed the relationship that develops between them and am looking forward to the next book and learning more about the other men. There is a lot of action and it is an exciting storyline.

The series has started out with an excellent first book that really has me interested to read more.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Dionna has studied at the Academy for five years to become a Pyromancer. When the Silithik attack the school, very few students will survive. Dionna will be assigned to the Nintey-First Dragon Quintelaide, an honor that is usually reserved for experienced warriors, not newly graduated students. Unfortunately, the other members of the Quintelaide don't want anything to do with their new, inexperienced, Pyromancer and will do everything they can to leave Dionna behind in order to complete their Honor March. Dionna is stubborn and will follow them into Silithik territory.
Wow, this book has nearly non-stop, exciting action, lots of magic, and suspense. Fascinating, unique, and well developed characters. Fantastic book!

This is an absolutely fantastic story but then it’s a Ruby Ryan book so enough said. I’m not giving any spoilers this book is just too good so read Ruby’s blurb and that will give you a leg up on the story. There’s plenty in this story to keep you entertained and turning the pages, Reverse Harem books are the 2nd best genre that I love and Ruby Ryan knows how to put just the right mix into her stories. There’s action, adventure, danger, love and romance and especially the bad guys well in this story the bad guys are the Silithik Hivenmind a race of monstrous insects who are determined to kill everyone and start a war. A fantastic read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read, 5 ⭐️ plus.

“An engaging first read for me of the Dragon Origins series”

I received an Advance Reader Copy for DIONNA’S WARRIOR: A Reverse Harem Romance (Dragon Origins, Book #1) written by Ruby Ryan and voluntarily reviewed this book. Dionna’s world is freshly crafted. The book summary does an excellent job of letting you know what is coming your way before you start it, and it is a great foundation for this author’s uniquely magical academic world. Each character is slowly developed, and while Dionna struggles with her sudden and much-sought-after placement to the highly esteemed Dragon Quintelaide, she soon realizes that she has mighty big shoes to fill amongst these elite warriors, emotionally and physically, along with honing her skills as a pyromancer.

Yes!

Okay so this book is about an average girl. And yes a lot of books start off that way. An average girl suddenly gets chosen or in an accident or something and is suddenly super powerful and valuable... well that didn't happen here. In this books Dionna is an average runetracer and when all her fellow runetracers die, she is sent to one of the best teams as their new Pyrotracer. But she is still average, which I like because while it is always a good read, sudden power is not something that just anyone can get. But being average? That is something I think a lot of people have felt before. And it just makes me root for Dionna even more.

Scary story all the fighting and the bugs eating people, Ugh! (body shakes) nasty. If you have read the other books you can see some of the madness that starts to show. This story says that after 5 years they will turn to dragons. I would like to find out more about the Quintelaide. How they work and the Gryphons also. Excellent story and well written. I love them. I hope there will be more to the start of this series. So we will understand why they keep coming back every hundred years or so. I received an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

Great story and characters but badly written sex scenes

I like the story and characters a lot, it was the sex scenes that were 'eh' to downright bad. I ended up skipping past most of them (thankfully there weren't too many of them). I read a lot of romance books and like a good steamy encounter but these had me wishing the author hinted instead of spelled it out. That's why I only gave 3 stars. However I did enjoy the actual storyline so I'll still be checking out the next book.

It starts out a bit young. I pegged the MC half a decade younger than her actual age. Oops. But she talked really young and her interactions with her friends in class read immature and young. I had just come off reading a middle-grade book though, so it could just be that it reminded me of that.
I loved the world building in this book, and just the whole kingdom that was created in general. Freaking bug overlords for the win.
It going in a great direction, and I'm interested about where this evolves too, so will definitely be reading the next book.

A paranormal story with action and more action. Huge bugs trying to kill everyone. The story takes a few twists starting with what seems to be a sweet innocent young woman who immediately thrown into a war. She is a Pyromancer that can create fire. With her a four men each with their own abilities. But things definitely are working out with her and them. But she is not “average” like she thinks.

I loved this book! It was mystical, magical, and delightful. The characters are an intriguing mix. The story telling is spot on. A strong female lead with equally strong male counterparts. A story which begins slowly but then bursts into action and never lets you go. There is no way I'm going to miss out on the remaining books.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it certainly will not be the last. Congratulations on an amazing start to the series.

Guilt Complex💩

Paranormal Romance💕

I just could not get into this book. I read and read and read, and the more I read, the more I disliked the main character, Dionna, and the book in general.
For me, the book was just way too involved, way over the top with too much going on, too many weird things happening. Too much constant superfluous activity.
In short, the book was tedious, for me anyway.

I had so much fun reading this story! It was hard to put down even for a moment. Wonderful characters and world building left me wanting MORE! Action-Adventure, Magic, War, Mythical Creatures as well as Alien creatures make this story a hit. I enjoyed learning all about Dionna and her magical abilities. I am looking forward to see how things progress in the books that follow.

Great start...

I liked this but I'm not sure why yet. The people and world were both familiar and yet quite unique. I don't think I've encountered a world quite like this one. This is one reason I'm unsure. I don't know if I'm responding to the uniqueness or it's just that good. Shrugs. Anyway I liked the characters. Ryon made me want to throw something, but at the same time I was so grateful this story wasn't insta everything. Looking forward to continuing the journey.

Outstanding!

Dionna is worried about graduating as a pyromancer, little does she know that her whole life is about to be upended.

Can she bond to her new Quint before they all commit ritual suicide in grief over the loss of their last pyromancer? Can she forgive them and most importantly can she forgive herself?

A must read series.

This is an exciting fantasy RH series. Dionna's story begins here, and it's a pretty cool read. It starts out with Dionna as a student, and when her academy falls under attack, it's up to her and a select few to battle and protect it. Her RH hasn't fully become known yet, but we start to see how things take shape.
