Shadows Landing #1

Saving Shadows

Rate this book
Gavin Faulkner was the only doctor in the small South Carolina inner coastal town of Shadows Landing. He was used to patching up everything from fishing lures stuck in skin to gator bites. Nothing could surprise him anymore--except when he found an unconscious woman partially submerged near his dock after a fierce thunderstorm.

Ellery St. John's last memory was of a bat swinging toward her head. The next thing she knew, she was cold, wet, and a sexy man was pressing his lips to hers. Too bad it turned out to be CPR instead of a passionate kiss. Gavin thought Ellery would be safe in the small town where BBQ wars were the biggest danger, but he was wrong. Now it was up to him to help Ellery put the pieces together in order to discover who had tried to kill her and why before they both ended up at the bottom of the ocean.

Saving Shadows is the start to the Shadows Landing series, a spin-off of the Bluegrass series. Bringing us to a new town with even more suspense, we're introduced to Gavin as he tries to protect Ellery from an unknown killer.

It's been awhile since I read this author but that's something I'm kicking myself for now. Her stories are always intriguing and this one wasn't any different. Gavin and Ellery were both very likable and their insta-love type of connection was believable with the situation they found themselves in, which made me adore them as a couple. I really liked seeing how protective Gavin and his family became of Ellery, and reading as they tried to solve the mystery surrounding her.

Ms. Brooks definitely knows how to write captivating stories and she never fails to leave me intrigued about secondary characters. I'm already dying to get my hands on the next story and I can't wait to see what she'll come up with next.

It kinda lacked suspense...and there was so many conversations with Gavin’s family that you kind of forget about the mystery part of the book.
Also : they fell in love way too quickly, it made no sense

This could have been so good, but perhaps I should have been alerted when at 10% the H talks about 'My parents, Jason and Jessica, along with my cousin's parents, Brian and Amy, Paul and Kim, and Robert and Angela....'

Who in their right minds TALKS like this to a virtual stranger! I would never mention my parents' names or those of my cousins' parents like that. Such clunky dialogue!!

But I persevered until page 62 when the dreaded sister - Harper – actually calls Ellery a 'no-good gold digger' without knowing the slightest thing about her. Why the hell Gavin didn't throw her out of his house I have no idea. I suppose the conversation was meant to be 'edgy' and 'sassy' but for me it was the pits and I dropped out.

I don't need 'sassy' women in my romance books. They aren't romantic, they are simply ignorant, rude, obnoxious and ruinous. And to speak in such a way to a woman to whom she has not even been introduced and jump to such appalling conclusions without even asking, is unforgivable.

I'm out of here.

1 1/2 stars.

Romantic suspense my ass. This book is about 20% mystery, 50% romance, and 30% family stuff. There's way too many conversations about Gavin's family, and Ellery and Gavin fall in love way too easily for people who have very few conversations about themselves. Ellery is the classic damsel in distress--having been struck on the head, she has temporary amnesia, and Gavin is the doctor who rescues her from the ocean and treats her. She's beautiful and vulnerable, and that's apparently the only thing Gavin needs to be smitten.

A bunch of cousins help him out, and they're pretty much all interchangeable and not necessarily great characters. Everyone assumes Gavin is dating Ellery, this girl literally no one knows, and apparently they think that because he wants to help her...? He's a doctor, shouldn't he generally want to help people? There's a saucy reverend, some sly old ladies (a must in Southern novels), ridiculous over the top rednecks (another requirement, unfortunately), shady rich people, magnanimous rich people, and some insta-love/lust-mistaken-as-love.

It's easy to read, I'll give it that, but it's also so plot light I honestly wonder who the hell put it as romantic suspense. There's very little mystery. We knows Ellery didn't do it. By the time Ellery remembers enough, we pretty much know all the suspects (who we basically don't see until the end) and there's no actual suspense because the book doesn't contain any real stakes. We learn fairly early police corruption is suspected, and that's pretty much the only thing that we need to piece the general rest together.

In her own time

This book felt like home to me. When I say that, I mean Keeneston, KY. Same great feel with suspense, laughs, and adventures. I guess Shadows Landing have a tingle or two with gators and snapping turtles.

SHADOWS LANDING! I mean I love Keeneston, I love the rose sisters, I love the idea of being best friends with royalty. But if I got to choose between a horse town and pirate town?? This girl would pick pirates any day. I mean Harper would be my best friend in a heart beat. I love this little town and all of the different characters. And I do mean different.
Turtle, Skeeter, Gator... These guys are absolutely amazing. The talking to ghosts, wrestling Bubba, as well as the turtle incident... They are the laugh characters of the book and do the job perfectly.
Granger and Kord: This isn't a Barney and Andy of Mayberry. This is much better. Granger deserves real love. His scars haunt him. It hurts my heart.
Tinsley, Harper, Ridge, Wade, Gavin, Trent, Ryker (swoon) this is the family every girl reading these books wants to have. These characters are great.
Ellery... she is just so sweet and wonderful.
Edie: I am glad I am getting to see this character unfold a little bit. My heart breaks for her too! OMG!! What if her and Granger????? They both have deep scars!!
Miss Ruby and Miss Winnie: They remind me of the Rose sisters but are cute in their own way.
This book was an epic read. I had such a hard time putting it down. Seriously, read this book only after you read the Forever bluegrass series.

Southern men and women...what a combo

Gavin is used to saving people’s lives. When he finds an unconscious woman floating in the ocean during a hurricane, he had no idea how saving her would bring him the love of his life. When Ellery wakes to find the sexy Dr. leaning over her, she doesn’t know if she’s having the best dream ever, or is she really in danger.

This new series is shaping up to be another awesome ride with the awesome Kathleen Brooks. I can’t wait to delve into all the new characters that make her books, sexy, wholesome, hysterical, sarcastic, and down right enjoyable. You’ll enjoy the scenery of a Charleston, the history of the area and ghost stories.the small town feel and love of your neighbor, family, and friends...this book has the suspense needed for murder mystery..the lighthearted romance of a novel, and the comedy of bunch of crazy folks who make living in small town America bearable...Turtle and Gator, Miss Winnie and Miss Ruby...I am going to love this series..

It has been a while since I have visited the Keeneston community. I can see Shadows Landing is its sibling community.

This book was not heavy on the romantic suspense except there was a little. Gavin's entire family in both Shadows Landing and Keeneston proved to be useful in solving Ellerly's plight. They had a connection for every problem Ellery encountered, lol.

Even with the corruption, the murder, the running, the hiding, and the bit of suspense in this book it turned out to be more lighthearted with a number of humorous elements.

I enjoyed the sense of community, the familial bonds, the friendship, love, and support in this book. The romance was there, but it was not overwhelming. Ellery and Gavin were more a result of circumstances than anything else.

This book did not continue with the same intensity in which it began, but I still found it to be enjoyable. One drawback was keeping up with the family connections. I did like that the author provided links to the family trees at the beginning of the book to assist with that issue.

If you are looking for intense romantic suspense, I would not say this book is what you want. If you don't mind something that is a bit more lighthearted and fun, but has some moments of intensity, this may be what you want. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Saving Shadows- Shadows Landing

This is a very exciting beginning to the Shadow Landing series with one of the Faulkner cousins, Gavin the town doctor, saving a woman, Ellery who was drowning in the middle of a hurricane. She had been thrown in the river after being hit on the head in an attempt to kill her. Instead Gavin saw her clinging to a log and dove in to save her. He had to revive her by giving CPR and she owed him her life. The problem was she could not remember what happened to her. This is the beginning of an amazing suspenseful love story that brings the characters from Keeneston and Shadow Landing Faulkner cousin's together to clear her name and solve the mystery of what had happened to her. Gavin will do anything to protect Ellery and with the help of Wade, Ryker and FBI agent Grainger they come to the bottom of the conspiracy to frame Ellery for murder and catch the perpetrators. This makes for non stop action as Gavin and Ellery get their happily ever after in the end. You get to meet some interesting characters of this old pirate settled town and sets the stage for future storylines. I cannot wait to read the next release in the Shadow Landing series and I highly recommend this book.

Saving Shadows is the first book in the Shadows Landing series by Kathleen Brooks. Shadows Landing Series combines small-town charm, suspense, and a dash of romance.
This is a contemporary romance series with a small-town setting, some romantic suspense elements, a little drama, intrigue, tension, mystery, humour, and adventure.
After reading Ms. Brooks ‘Bluegrass’ series, and not being as ‘blown away’ by them as I had expected and hoped, I wasn’t sure if I would take the plunge into this series or not. But as they were sitting on my TBR already, and also wanting to clear my TBR list, I decide to just dive in and get them done. I have to admit that, thankfully, I did ‘enjoy’ this series a bit more than the Bluegrass books.

The series consists of:
-Saving Shadows (Book #1)
-Sunken Shadows (Book #2)
-Lasting Shadows (Book #3)
-Fierce Shadows (Book #4)
-Broken Shadows (Book #5)
-Framed Shadows (Book #6)
-Endless Shadows (Book #7)
-Fading Shadows (Book #8)
-Damaged Shadows (Book #9)
-Escaping Shadows (Book #10)

Happy reading! 📚✨

ANOTHER FABULOUS KATHLEEN BROOK'S book!!!!!

This was a really interesting, riveting, suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns that kept you guessing. The outcome of the mystery was very clever and I liked how it wrapped up! It was also a beautifully written love story that had no unnecessary angst and was a pure pleasure to read. I really enjoyed meeting all the characters in the book and can see it is going to be like Kathleen's other excellent series, all of which I have read more than once. I got a real kick out of the weaving in of the Keenestown folks!!!! What I really like about her books is how colorful, loyal, quirky and loveable she makes the secondary characters in her stories. You get to laugh at their antics, "Ah" at their loyalty to each other and root for them to outsmart and foil the bad guys!!!! I highly recommend this fabulous story and can't wait to read the next one in the series!!!!! 😊

🖼️🌊It started lightning fast. I mean that damn girl started fantasizing about Gavin the minute she opened her eyes after her whole ordeal. Gavin rescued her around 3am and by noon they're in a relationship and the whole town knows it. Of course they're the main character and they're going to be a couple so just skip the how part, right?😒

🖼️🌊I'm sure people don't really talk and act like Ellery irl..... Right?👀 I can't grasp at her character. But she's quite shallow if I say so.

🖼️🌊I understand connecting with someone in a dangerous situation but this one is really not going like that. It's like the author give little bit information about what's going on and thn like "ok go back to romance" in a split second. As if the characters are starring in two different shows.

🖼️🌊Oh my god we get to see turtles origin story.

🖼️🌊I'm not going to comment on this disturbing town.

🖼️🌊It's just doesn't feel like an experienced author wrote this.

Great spinoff series

I love all of Kathleen's books. This is an introduction to the Faulkners and the town of Shadows Landing. The town and characters are described in a way I can picture them as I read. I'm looking forward to each character's story and getting to know them better.
I did have one small issue with the story but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the tale. I don't think this gives away any story, but stop reading of you want to know nothing. The lead character gets a concussion and skull deep head wounds, but is swimming underwater in a pool less than 48 hours later. I would think the stitches couldn't get wet yet and she'd still have a bad headache. I had a mild concussion once and the pain lasted several days. Even with that the story had lots of action, suspense, and laughter. Looking forward to more in Shadows Landing.

Ellery has lost her memory after being thrown into the ocean and left to drown. When Gavin Faulkner the town Dr. rescues her out of the water, he immediately knows that he must protect her. Until Ellery's memory returns she must stay hidden in Shadows Landing unsure of who attacked her or even who she it. This small town is a long history of pirate ancestors and has no problem defending Ellery when her identity is revealed and her attacker comes to find her.

With each of Kathleen's books it's hard not to fall a little bit in love with each of her quirky small towns, the outrageous residents, and the unique feeling of belonging. If it were possible I would have already packed my bags and moved to Shadow's Landing or Keeneston (Bluegrass Series).

As always the narration by Eric G Dove was amazing. Def at the very top of my favorites list.

Most of the first half of the book was very interesting, steady paced and with main characters that were easy to like. But then the author seemed to reach a predicament on how to push the story forward to get it to stay on track with the plot and from there, it was just a rush job.

It was definitely a story that I think had to be faster paced, but how the author handled it/wrote it really came off sloppy.

Super disappointed because ALL the characters are so interesting! I'm planning on giving the next book in the series a chance in the future because I did enjoy their personalities, but really really hope it won't end up a repeat of this first book -> Great story concept, great character personalities, great start and then disappointment at the 2nd half of it all.

Gavin and Ellery really do meet quite by chance. He is trying to secure his boat during a severe storm and he finds her hanging on a log and barely alive. Ellery doesn't remember what happened to her, but feels down to her bones that she is in danger if she goes back to Charleston. Gavin was really her savior and goes above and beyond his duties as a doctor for her. It soon becomes apparent that her fears are well founded and someone is intent on ruining her life at a minimum. Gavin and all of his family and friends in Shadows Landing are called upon to help solve what happened and who is behind it all. Their story was interesting and quite entertaining. I liked how Gavin just accepted Ellery and didn't push her for more than she could give. You will have to read it to find out what happened and who was behind Ellery's trauma.

Enjoyable but predictable addition to the new series of Shadows Landing a close sister type city to Keeneston that were featured in the Bluegrass Series. Seems everyone is related so many characters from previous books.

Dr. Gavin Faulkner hears his boat banging on the dock at 3 a.m due to a storm. When he goes down to secure it he finds a woman nearly dead clinging to a log. He gives her mouth to mouth and takes her into his office to recover. She has amnesia and a gash on the back of her head. Due to the storm he can't get her to the hospital so keeps her overnight in his surgery/office.

Turns out someone has tried to kill Ellery St. John but she can't remember who or why. Plot revolves around the crazy, quirky town helping keep Ellery safe till the mystery can be solved. It also is true love story with Gavin and Ellery very much like all the other books in Bluegrass Series.

Great start to a new series

I had been looking forward to this book from Kathleen Brooks, and it did not disappoint. This new series is set in Shadows Landing and it is the turn of Gavin the local doctor who we met in Forever Devoted to find love. There was a murder, intrigue, laughs and another set of elderly ladies who unlike the Rose sisters arm themselves with ' bibles and desserts' rather than brooms and frying pans. Gavin and Ellery made a great couple. The town has it's fair share of supporting chatacters from Gator, Turtle, Gavin's sister and cousins and even Bubba the alligator. Characters from Keenston made an appearance too. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, look forward to reading more in the series, and would definitely recommend.

Great start of a new series....

I have been a fan of Ms. Brooks books and have read every book she has published. Her ability to mix romance, humor, mystery, and small town charm is unparalleled. While this is a new series, it is a spinoff from her Bluegrass series, but it is it's own set of stories. So.... grab a sweet tea and take a trip to a place you wish really existed with characters you would love to meet for real.

In Saving Shadows, it starts with attempted murder, amnesia, and a sexy doctor. What else can a girl ask for? Not to offer spoilers here, but you just have to grab a copy and see for yourself how much more there really is....

5 stars.... a must read!!!!

Kathleen Brooks has done it again. This is the first book in her new series, Shadows Landing. The protagonists in this series were originally introduced in “Forever Devoted” and they are the grandchildren of the brothers of Marcy Faulkner Davies, the matriarch of the Davies clan (see Bluegrass Dawn). As in her other series, the town of Shadows Landing is full of quirky characters who rally around to protect a stranger in need. There are laugh-out-loud scenes – Ms. Brooks’ trademark humor - that provide a nice counterpoint to the drama and suspense. The romance develops nicely and true villain was a surprise. I’m looking forward to revisiting Shadows Landing and with six more Faulkner cousins, it looks as if this will be another long series.

I loved the Bluegrass series, so when this spinoff came out I was thrilled. In true Kathleen Brooks style, we have a mixture of romance and thrilling suspense! My favorite kind of listen! Ellery is pulled from the water and Gavin is there to resuscitate her. Now unable to remember what happened, she finds herself in the center of a dangerous web, with lies all pointing to her! Sparks are flying with Gavin, but will this mystery be solved before it's too late? I love these small town mysteries. They encompass that feeling of community while we take down the evil ones. It's a fun listen, kept me wondering til the very end rooting for the happily ever after. With Eric G Dove at the helm, the narration as always is spot on and kept me entertained.

Once again another great book. We were introduced to some of these characters in the last book and now even more. I love the interaction of the characters and the mention of the Keeneston Family. I loved how it was "attraction at first sight" and then the drama grew from there. In true Kathleen fashion it was filled with funny statements, innuendos and just laugh out loud moments along with a couple different suspects into the mix and just when you thought it was over it really wasn't! It was a nice read how the entire "Keeneston Family" was called into help just Ryan. It was fast paced and a good read. I look forward to Wade's book next!

DNF. I’m going to step away from this one for now. It has such great reviews, that I fear that I may be missing out on something. But usually I can tell pretty quickly if I am going to like a book. And unfortunately, the quality of the dialogue and character development immediately turned me off. It seemed like the author wanted to introduce every single inhabitant of Shadow Landing and the neighboring three towns, within the first 2 chapters of the book. My head was spinning with all the names that were spit out…repeatedly. Plus, I don’t love insta-love, and that seems to be the direction this was headed in.

Spin-off series a hit

I have never read a Kathleen Brooks' book that I didn't love. In this book, the author introduces her readers to Shadow Landing where the Faulkner cousins reside and we are swept into new adventures with these folks. Ellery and Gavin lead us in a mystery to find out who is trying to kill Ellery and why. She has temporary amnesia and cannot remember. Conspiracy and another town that "takes care of their own" along with crossover from the Keeneston Davies clan makes this a must read.

Kathleen Brooks takes us to a new town, Shadows Landing and the main family are cousins to the Keeneston crew so expect a small crossover here and there.

A new town, one with a pirate past is bound to hold some mysteries and stories. Another great set of small town characters like Gator and Turtle and lets not forget Bubba the alligator, all set to cause a few laughs along the way.

This story is a murder and attempted murder mystery with some love and romance along the way. Thoroughly enjoyable read that was hard to put down. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Gavin and Ellery was absolutely adorable together. Gavin the Shadows Landings only doctor. Ellery was an art dealer. She witness a murder and the guy tried to murder her as well he dump he in the river and she somehow survived. Gavin saw her in the water a rescued her and she fell head over hills in love with the man giving her CPR.
There are plenty of suspenseful moments in the story. You will not be able to stop reading until your finished.
One again Kathleen Brooks, you did what you do best. You entertained....thank you

She has done it again!

Awesome! I was beginning to worry that at some point I’d lose touch with this huge cast of characters! But no! The cast just gets bigger! As a native of South Carolina, I can’t help but love the fact that this new series has made its way here! One could not ask for a more realistic, comical, quirky, loving, cast of characters. Thes are people you know or at least you wish you knew! I love the strong women and the oh my goodness” guys that they fall in love with! Keep them coming!

Amazingly good!!

I so far, haven't found a bad book from this lady!! This spin off series, covering the extended family from Keeneston continues their version of intrigue, suspense, falling in love, and near death escapes along side finding the love of his life during a raging storm - that's Dr Gavin Faulkners situation when he pulls a woman from the river during a storm. Love the similar characters with a twist to the Rose sisters, but the family bond, the town support for Ellery, gets the reader in the heart! Loved it, cannot wait for the next in the series.

This is the first book in the Shadow's Landing series. We are introduced to the Faulkner's, who are cousins to the Davis's from Keeneston, so there are a few characters that are familiar.

Gavin Faulkner pulls Ellery from the river during a hurricane, but she has a head injury and doesn't remember why she was almost killed or who is after her.

This is going to be another great series that has fun, quirky characters that draw you into the story, as well as love and suspense, along with some laughter along the way.

Who wants pie?

Can you say that a romantic suspense is cute? Well this book falls into that category! Local doctor in the small coastal town of Shadows Landing, SC, Gavin discovers an unconscious woman at his dock during a storm. His patient has no memory of how she got there but she does know that she’s in danger. Gavin and his family and friends protectively circle Ellery while they get to the bottom of who tried to kill her...then, who’s trying to frame her for murder.
So many lovable characters in Shadows Landing...and an addiction to pie! Great story!
