For Bud Marshall, growing up in a rural Maine town would be challenging enough if it weren’t for the fact that fate dealt him a difficult hand to begin with. Left to be raised by his grandparents, Bud struggles to discover himself as he pursues the dream of realizing greatness in his own life.
Fortunately for Bud, he has help on his journey of discovery from the girl next door.
Teresa Peterson, a precocious youth one year his junior, both acts to guide and confound Bud’s decisions. But sometimes, the ones we are closest to, are those we hurt the most.
A profoundly human story about family, friendship, and love, in which Bud learns as he matures that it is taking responsibility for his own life, and making choices in conscious awareness of who he is, that will shape his destiny.
Can he overcome his past mistakes, and build a real foundation for the future?

“An inspiring and deeply profound masterpiece.” – Stephen R. Willis Co-Editor in Chief, Uprising Review
“Thomas Torrington’s “Evergreen” is a stunning literary accomplishment. This coming-of-age story will challenge your perspectives on what it means to live a life well spent, facing your innermost monsters, and not surrendering to your circumstances. Make sure you set aside time to read it; you will not want to put it down.” – Rich Williams reader review
For the first twenty years of his adult life, Thomas J. Torrington made a career as a golf teaching professional.
Now he has transitioned into a life as a writer of literary fiction stories that explore the depths of the human condition.
When he’s not hitting 300 yard drives, he’s hitting the ski slopes with his wife and two young children, or otherwise enjoying the outdoors near his home in rural Maine.
I know that's a simple statement, but it's not something I can often say. I was drawn in by the real, raw characters. I fell in love with them, and when they encountered heartbreak or acted just plain stupid or finally caught a break, I cared.
This is a book about how hard life can be. It's also a book about how much hope is there for the taking. It's a book about love, bitterness, redemption, hatred, forgiveness, and faith. It's a book about family and romance, about life and death.
The writing style is classic, and the themes are timeless. You'll want to hug the ones you love; you'll want to visit Maine; and above all, you'll want to keep turning the pages.
I'm not going to tell you the plot. I want you to experience that for yourself. And please do. This is a must-read book from an author you'll be thrilled to have discovered.
Evergreen is a beautiful story of love, healing and redemption. It explores universal truths that all of us can relate to. The author does a wonderful job at creating a cast of characters that the reader will fall in love with. His writing is poignant and evocative at times, making me laugh and at other times, making me cry. I highly recommend this book to readers of any genre.
I wept all the way through this powerfully moving, profoundly truthful story. As a Mainer, I recognized the locale, town names and Route numbers. As a man in his mind-seventies I remembered the life stages and events as they unfolded. Thank you to the author for this wonderful story.
The author's realistic portrayal of the characters drew me in. I became invested in the story. Tragedy to possibility to more than survival would be my definition.
Loved the book. Fast pace. Great characters. Passed it on to my husband who doesn't read much contemporary fiction. He is really liking it. Family saga set in Maine late 20th century.
