Most people come home with a window sticker, a shot glass, or a bottle opener cleverly disguised as a key chain from their summer vacations, but not AJ. She drunkenly stumbled into a sacred Native American Indian ritual and accidentally inherited an ancient hunter spirit. Now AJ, Norm (the hunter spirit), and Danny, Norms rightful heir, wander the country fighting demons that escape from Hell to enjoy this worlds lavish all-you-can-eat soul buffet. A national park in Mississippi is the next stop on their traveling shit show because someone or something (spoiler alert: its totally a demon) is killing residents of a nearby small town. But demons arent the only thing AJ and Danny have to contend with this go around. Throw in a self-righteous, holier-than-thou reverend, his dick-for-brains son, a not-so-sure-what-side-of-the-law-shes-on sheriff and a super-sexy, do-jiggly-things-to-your-naughty-bits park ranger and well, AJ just might find herself in a battle that shes not prepared for ... love.
In 2008, K.B. Draper discovered a talent for storytelling after drinking a bottle of cheap wine at a Christmas party. One of her equally intoxicated friends said, “You are so freak’n *burp* funny. You should write a book.” The idea stuck and so did a cocktail napkin (in an inappropriate place) but that’s a totally different story. After that, K.B. Draper taught herself to write; which was challenging because she was a bad student and an even worse teacher -- but words started to make sentences, sentences made paragraphs and paragraphs eventually made a story, which came to be her first book, The U-Haul Diary.
The U-Haul Diary is a comedic, loose interpretation (okay, completely one-sided view) of the women she dated who moved in and out of her life (and house). Writing was cheaper than therapy so she continued to tell stories in her stylized rambling humor-- but her second book Close-Up is more of a modern day, will they-won’t they, oh no they didn’t, fantasy series, featuring Kanyon and Daylen, two heroines out to save the world from sin-infused articles and the supernatural bad guys. If you are looking for something a little darker then check out the Demons Series, book 1 Demons Shemons.
K.B. Draper is not a classically trained writer but she fakes it pretty okay and hopefully inspires a few chuckles along the way.
This was a lot of fun! As soon as October hits, I get in the mood for paranormal anything to read. I just love this time of year. I have actually only read one book by Draper before this. I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about it. I had my fingers crossed this would be better and I’m happy to say it was.
This book is just pure fun and entertainment. It had a ton of action, a little bit of romance (but a good amount of chemistry) and wonderful characters. The main character is a smart mouthed badass, but in a good way. Her sarcasm and wit was actually laugh-out-loud funny at times. All the jokes didn’t hit, but I had a smile on my face most of the book.
There is some violence and some gore. This is a story about a woman who is a demon hunter. That means fighting and getting bloody. But because of the witty humor all through the book, it never feels too heavy. This almost gave me a Buffy vibe, but I think AJ (the main from this book) is even more sarcastic.
This was exactly what I was hoping for and I really enjoyed it. It’s very easy for me to recommend this to paranormal fans. If you want to be entertained, grab this book. This also happens to be currently free if you have Kindle Unlimited. That just makes it an even bigger steal.
Great sarcastic witty fun, with demon hunting! On Kindle Unlimited. Highly Recommended if you're into the Wynonna Earp style of anti-hero.
AJ is our reluctant demon hunter for the last 7 years. In her last year in highschool her klutzy ways had her stumbling (literally) into an ancient ritual with a bunch of Native Americans, where she inherited the demon hunter position by accident!
The story is fast paced and full of witty dialogue. AJ is always 'on' and generally I would get a bit annoyed at such a character, but I felt it was well balanced with the darker elements of their reality. Life on the road, hunting for demons that are killing and soul collecting - all along with her best friend and the guy who was SUPPOSED to be the next spirit-receiver, Danny. They have a great rapport, although AJ can be a little mean toward Danny.
Her own irreverence toward things, is clearly her way to cope with such immense responsibility and to distance herself from emotions. She just goes forth and does the things, dangerous things, but doesn't think of much beyond it, having lost her faith in having anything special of meaningful with anyone who could actually accept her, let alone understand the lifestyle.
We meet sexy Park Ranger Ashlyn who has her own other-worldly experiences she could never explain, and immediately senses something deeper is up with the cool candoris AJ, and she is intrigued, wanting to know more.
Lots of action happens, and I was riveted from page 1 to the last - where we basically let off on a bit of a cliffhanger, however it's not an unsatisfying end, just amusing and keeps you wanting more. I could absolutely see these books and characters being made into a TV Show, like that of Wynonna Earp, with the quippy dialogue and irreverent humour. So if you're a fan of those tropes, I would recommend you give this a go, on kindle unlimited.
Very entertaining read. AJ and Danny are demon hunters. Of course AJ kicks much ass, and has the 'tude to match. I think the author voice for AJ was pretty awesome, full of snark and sass. It was very very funny a lot of the time. Her degradation of Danny and his masculinity is ... well it's pretty epic, lol. I felt for the poor guy really.
But liked it quite a bit. Not so much a fan of the god stuff, but the storyline itself was pretty cool. Of course introducing Ashlyn (Park Ranger Parker, say that 3 times) helps AJ along the way too. But of course our lady demon hunter has to try and land the local tenner :)
It's always wonderful to read a great book with a story someone recommended, written by an author everybody else also knows and recommends. It's usually a pleasant experience, if expectations are met. However, when you happen to stumble on a great story written by a great author that you had no idea existed before, then you know you've just hit the jackpot of all reading experiences.
I had a smile on my face, from beginning until the end of this book. And it took me awhile to exactly pinpoint the main reason for that, but when I did, it was easy to see why. The protagonist, AJ. Such a fun little lady to hang out with. In a world full of violence, horror and demons instead of taking the deeply dark, gritty and full of nasty secrets road that most other authors go to in a truly unoriginal attempt at being original, what we have here instead is the sarcastic, flippant and extremely impish AJ as the protagonist. AJ is fun, period. I deeply enjoyed her witty/silly sense of humor and her Devil-May-Care attitude. There is just enough substance in her personality to make her character interesting, but not enough to weight down her own boisterous nature.
Reading her interactions with just about anyone in this book was pure entertainment, and her relationship with Danny had a simplicity in its profound fondness of one another that was really touching. Her relationship with Ashlyn is also well-crafted and promising, and finally, the story is just truly enjoyable. It's a highly entertaining fast read that left me wanting more.
So thank you, K.B. Draper, for avoiding the cliché of the broody protagonist. No they-have-killed-my-parents-in-a-dark-alley-when-I-was-7 backstory routine here. No broody middle-aged (wo)man with absolute no sense humor dressing up as a mammal with webbed wings and saying "I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman!" for maximum dramatic effect.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I like good ol' Bats, but I definitely prefer the Deadpool/Spider-Man sense of humor and incessant battle quips style. Which also happens to be AJ style.
Granted this might not be everyone's cup of tea, I can guarantee you that if you're anything like me, an unapologetic banter junkie, a bit silly, a bit sarcastic and perfectly fine with the idea of reading a book about a badass demon hunter that does not take herself too much serious, you most definitely will also enjoy this story.
Also, this book is currently part of the Kindle Unlimited program, so if you have a subscription, there is absolutely zero reason for you not to give it a chance.
DNF at 4%. It is not something I do, to rate a book that I DNFed, even more startling is the 4% (I know, I know) but there is a reason for dropping the book like a hot potato... a racist hot potato.
How many casual racist slices make a racist pie? Two? Four? How about the plot background and the whole start of the book? Is that enough? Native American people are very serious and protective of their different cultures; the constant misrepresentation, cultural appropriation and a long History lesson, in tomes, of problems make it a very sensitive issue.
I skimmed the book description, missing the red flag in there. I found it in a list promoting queer authors, saw the raving reviews and hopped in, that is on me. But for whatever reason, I found myself reading instead of a fun queer book.... this.
We, as outsiders, should know better, as readers, we should expect better, as people, we should do better.
Demons Shemons by K.B. Draper was a fast book. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I began reading it. The writing style is first person with the main character comes across as two parts Wynonna Earp and one part teenage boy. This didn’t put me off in the least and I found it quite entertaining. One thing to note is that the author doesn’t spend a ton of time providing a lot of backstory about how AJ Mattox, demon hunter extraordinaire, became who she is. That information is kind of sprinkled in throughout the novel. What Draper does do is drop the reader right into the story.
AJ (the woman with a demon hunting Native American spirit inside her) is on a mission in a Mississippi national park. With the help of her sidekick/protector, Danny Whitefang (The rightful heir to the Native American spirit dubbed ‘Norm”), they seem to find more problems than solutions. The local sheriff and daughter to the demon-scented reverend wants to arrest AJ for a murder, while the attractive and highly capable ranger, Ashlyn Parker, is begrudgingly on AJ’s side, if only for personal reasons.
Draper did an excellent job of painting the visuals for me of the park, demons, bad guys, the sheriff’s breasts, and even Danny Whitefang. What I was less locked on was the appearance of both AJ and Ashlyn. I know AJ puts her feminine wiles to good use in on instance, then in the next you’re reading about her quirky love of weapons and overall baddassery. (It’s a word because I say so). Perhaps that is where my Wynonna reference came from. And yes, I even imagined Ashlyn a bit like Nicole Haught from the same Wynonna Earp show. (Instead of ‘way-hot’ it would be ‘why-hot’? Who knows but we totally know WHY.) Anyway, I kind of put my own thoughts together on their appearance and you totally should too.
As more and more details/clues/pieces of the puzzle are uncovered it becomes a race to see what happens first. Whether or not they catch the ‘shemon’, or AJ and Ashlyn fall into bed together. Either way it’s going to be a crazy ride. My only complaint? The ending felt a lot like the end of a soap opera cliffhanger. It was a little abrupt but lucky me I bought the second book at the same time as the first and I’ve already started reading it.
Wow, a ton of people have this book on their 'did not finish' shelf. RIP. Also not spoiler tagging anything because fuck it. Don't read this is you haven't read the book.
This book was fun for basically being a lesbian version of the Dresden Files, and I enjoyed the camaraderie between the main character and her bff Danny.
What I did not enjoy was the kind-of racist backstory (white girl interrupts a Native ritual and steals their power to become the chosen one, seriously?), and the main character's "sense of humor" (hint: it involves calling people 'bitch' and using 'pussy' as a derogatory term).
I lost track of the townspeople background characters because I just didn't care. I hate that the thread about where the sheriff went when her dad sent her away for a year, never gets resolved. Oh, and I didn't really feel the whole 'I'm all alone because of the path I walk' thing that the main character was supposed to be struggling with. The author just didn't carry it off.
Also, I have a HUGE problem with this book's mythology. According to this book, all the boogie men from folklore are just demons in various forms. Human souls are a source of power, and Heaven and Hell are competing over who gets more souls.
Like... what? For one, that's a huge 'fuck you' to other cultures, to frame ALL OF EVERYTHING SUPERNATURAL in a Judeo-Christian way. And that's boring. And the fact that there's only one Chosen One demon hunter doesn't make sense, because one person vs a world of baddies, means a shitton of civilians must die every day because one person can't cover much ground.
Oh, and going from 'probably a demon' to 'Queen of Hell' was way too big of a jump. Where's the author going to go from there? It's a ridiculous escalation.
I'm pleasantly surprised the protag's girlfriend survived the events of the book, I was totally expecting her to get fridged.
I'm probably going to read more of this series because I don't love myself and they're silly fun.
This book has a crazy story about demons and whatnot. It's riveting at times. The thing I liked most is that the protagonist is absolutely hilarious. I mean, laugh out loud funny. This book is definitely worth the time.
Excellent read. I absolutely love the witty sarcasm the characters role out in this book. The humor and laughter is on point. But there is also a equal balance to the seriousness of demon hunting and bad guy takedowns. I couldn’t get enough of the bother/sister relationship between Danny and AJ. I adore AJ and Ashlyn and I can’t wait to see more. I hope to see there relationship continue to grow in the next book.

So...I wasn't sure about reading this one, I mean sometimes I'm very picky in a not so good way when looking at something that isn't contemporary sapphic romance; I probably miss some great reads, but so be it hihihi.
Anyway, I started this one with my typical unease feeling, like "I don't know if I should be reading this" but at the same time I couldn't put it down, like skipping sleep because it was sucking me into the story, I had to read it.
And thank fuck I did not trust my "guts" because after some chapters I was enraptured by it. My goodness, I SO LOVE AJ, she's s amusing, she's unapologetic (as she should be), she's full of shit and I'm here for it. I loved that Ashley kept her on her toes and I loved seeing this world through her eyes and I cannot wait to keep seeing it through her lenses. And let's not even start on the plot, it was exciting, intriguing, oof.
That ending got me gasping/choking in a mix of surprise and hilarity, I'm really excited for the next two books.
P.S.: what does it say about me for sorta rooting for THAT demon to have their way? But not to the detriment of the good guys LOL. Yeah, I know, I'm shallow.
This is a wildly fast-paced urban fantasy that includes all of the best parts of urban fantasy. I enjoyed some of the devil-may-care attitude that AJ brings to the table. While she isn't the first slightly-emotionally damaged heroine that populate the genre, she is certainly one of the best versions. I enjoyed her narrative style, which was mostly full of jokes and silly anecdotes, but still had enough heart to keep me reading.
If anything, the novel does suffer from a ton of info dumping, both in the beginning of the book, and a little near the middle, but this is something that most first books in the series have. It wasn't distracting, and having AJ's smarmy retelling of her early life made it entertaining.
This is one of the few LGBT urban fantasies that are really good at the world building, and character development instead of just going to the romancing of the two leads. For me, it makes the book infinitely more interesting than most other LGBT urban fantasies (or more accurately, paranormal romances). I look forward to reading the follow up novel.
AJ is smart-mouthed, irritating at times, and very confident, but as she says, she is a badass, and underneath it all, a rather likeable character. Having stumbled (well, tumbled and rolled might be just as accurate) into an ancient ritual and ended up with a hunter spirit, AJ, along with Danny, chase and kill rogue demons, and they are a great team. Except that this one might be a lot more involved than they thought, and then there is Ashlyn...
Very much action focused with a lot of humor and an, all things considered, cute romance on the side (AJ really does deserve to have someone), this was a very enjoyable read. It's faced paced, engaging, with some tender moments, and really just a lot of fun. I'm happy to have picked it up, and will definitely be reading the remaining two books in the trilogy (and other books that the author has written).
This action packed story is fun and fast paced. A.J. is a fantastic protagonists with a sarcastic streak a mile wide and enough action hero witticisms to fill your average Bruce Willis movie marathon weekend. The fact that the story holds water and makes sense is almost like icing on the cake, but it certainly is a treat that it isn't sacrificed like in so many action stories.
I was devouring this book. I loved the character, the rituals, the traditions, and the sexual chemistry between AJ and the Ranger. AJ is known to have countless women she has bedded and left behind. Then came the moment I was waiting for and it was a fade to black. A freaking fade to black. I could not believe it. I was crushed. I plan to read the next book. It'll just have to be after my disappointment subsides.
2 stars. It’s all the casual racism for me. Jesus Christ. Only ONE other reviewer pointed this out which is seriously so disappointing but whatever. I’m good on this series. This is a fuck no for me. The main character is very much ‘Not Like Other Girls’ and I’m never here for that. She was so insufferable. The plot is a lot of telling instead of showing and I’m not interested in continuing on with this series.
A real romp! This a well written enjoyable fun read. It has a good storyline that keeps moving with no bumps in the road. I think what I liked the most is the heroine is a real hoot. Many funny lines between the main characters and I found myself giggling a lot. Very much looking for the next installment.
I read paranormal here and there but its definitely not a go to for me. That said....this book was a breath of fresh air. It was so sarcastic, and so smart ass, and just hilarious. The lead character reminded me so much of Buffy. Stuck in a life that she didn't ask for but stepped up to the plate and kicked some demon ass...with the help of her Scoobies, of course. 5 stars. Flat out.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: favorite trope, out of your comfort zone, meet-cute, unusual job, not a romance UNICORN: Faith (Possibly other categories for main card.)
If Deadpool and Wynnona Earp had a daughter, you would have this main character. She's a badass, multi-weapon toting, cocky, and fun demon hunter. I loved this book, and I must read the sequel.
3.75 rounded up to 4, this was a fun paranormal romance with a sarcastic demon hunter, her ranger, and her found family. Plenty of action and just as many one-liners. Looking forward to seeing what happens next, riding along on the next adventure (and hopefully getting to see Loretta Linn come into her own) in the next in this series.
Hysterical, awesome. Fast paced. I loved this book. I wish there were 100 more. I'm gonna have to pace myself and hold off on reading the next one so hopefully there'll be another one when I'm done. Please write more stat!
Smartass heroine and no holds barred action packed, good versus evil start to a series. A bit of romance, a best friend side kick, a Choctaw shaman and more demons to fight than there is time.
Angels, demons and a WLW demon hunter. Her snark level and witty comebacks are awesome. Her partner in crime, Danny is the target of half of her snark and it's totally worth it.
It has everything: a good storyline, funny witty humor, romance, and a mystery waiting to be solved. Loved reading it and I hope there is a continuation of this kickass story.
I've been looking for more (any genre) books with queer women as the protagonistand or antagonistic. This book has some really good (and evil) characters and a lot of hilarious interactions. I think I need to look up more K.B. Draper books!!
