Mark my words, this is the horror comic of the year. If you aren't reading this, you should be. Just when you think you know exactly where the story is headed, Cates zigs in another direction. I love the story mechanism of these first two volumes, with Sadie leaving her son a video of what happened while he was still a baby. Cates has given voice to such a well-rounded likable character in Sadie. Have I mentioned Sadie's son is the Antichrist? I can't wait to read what happens next.
Received a review copy from Aftershock and NetGalley. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
In this installment of Babyteeth, we follow Sadie and her family as Dancy leads them to what he promises is a safe place, but something is very, very wrong when they arrive.
This one definitely felt less horror and more action than the first volume, and a lot of the panels were hard to follow, just due to really simplistic panels that made it difficult to differentiate between characters. That said, I still loved the progression of their journey, as well as how tangible Sadie's love for her sweet little anti-Christ baby is. I'm super here for unconditional mommy love, even when demonic spawn are involved.
Thank you to Aftershock Comics for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Babyteeth continues to be one of the best comics of 2018!
So after the crazy events of the last volume this one continues to be a blast. This time we have the father of the hunter from the last volume go berserk. He has just had enough of this bullshit. On top of that Sadie follows Darcy to a new place that promises to protect the baby. Now we all know that shit ain't going to go smooth. Some twist and turns, a whole lot of violence, and a cute little fire breathing Raccoon demon all come together in volume 2 of babyteeth!
Good: The action is great. The art just really gives off this creepy horror vibe but the action bits are insane. The dialog is still very well done, feeling super real, and yet funny when needs to be. I love all the characters, even the villains too, which is a surprise. Also, the father of the hunter from last volume does some shit I did NOT see coming.
Bad: It went by too quick!
Babyteeth is that high end, super fun, and super spooky comic that you want from a horror series. Donny is hitting it out of the park with these comics and this is no exception. A 4.5 out of 5.
Probably one of the best horror action fantasy style comic atm. Great story telling and style. Cool art. We learn mire about the different sides who are amongst the struggle. Highly recommend this one!!
I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley
As with the first volume, I am really enjoying the characters here. The main family is really great and I love how sarcastic Sadie and Heather are in particular. There is a lot of action in this volume and a lot of twists and turns that I was definitely not expecting. Unfortunately I think some of the plot points were a little bit too out there for me because I often found it hard to suspend my disbelief. It does help that many of the characters seem to realize how ridiculous all of this is, but I still found myself thinking 'really?' several times throughout. Still, it's a pretty fun series and I am interested to see where it's going, although I'm sure it's just going to get weirder before it calms down [if it ever does at all lol].
This volume, Cates seems to find the pace and narrative, the character roster increases in ways that deepens both the satire and the family pathos, and one has to deal with hellspawn on a plane. Sadie's narrative voice remains believable in both that she is not too intelligent for her age and is a well-rounded human being in way over her head. There are a fair amount of twists and blending of toned, and now that Cates is hitting his stride, this is shaping up to a particularly promising series.
Dalsi zabijak, dalsi fanatici, porad stejny demon, poradna davka krve, jop, tohle zacina byt docela legrace. Cates umi docela slusne davkovat informace, aby si clovek nepripadal, ze jsou tu jenom same otazniky a aby ho udrzelo pri napinavem cteni. Zatim hodne povedena serie.
This second volume solidifies our emotional investment in the fate of sweet Sadie and her chosen Antichrist baby. It moves for me at a faster pace than the previous one, there's a lot of explanations going on uninterrupted by Sadie's narration and there's a lot more violence too. Needless to say, the idea that Sadie and her family were really going to be safe and protected was just that, an idea, an illusion. I agree with her on the brainwashing.
Things get even weirder but, in a way, they make very much sense. I needed the explanations, so that worked for me perfectly, but I can't say I was surprised about the plotlines, as I had already thought of them, hoped they would be explored. And they did. Again, more revolves around family bonds and blood than the occult or religious beliefs. Let me tell you, there's quite some logic in the madness. More action, more blood, more stuff blown off and people killed, but I found the action sequences a bit too vague, with the exception of Coyote's presence. I like you, Coyote. I understand your way of creating some justice! The demon killer racoon steals scenes again, loved him too.
My favourite panel was the one where Sadie finally gets to know why her mother left her and her family...that was heartbreaking...I really don't know how she can cope with all that's been thrown at her, I would have more than a fit in her place, I would want to burn something or someone down. Her baby, Clark, cannot catch a break either, too many people wanting something from him.
The ending was the little surprise I was waiting for, and the little hope too, as the volume felt as a very sad note for me, too much loss and too many painful revelations for Sadie, I need to know it gets better, even if it's horror! Give me the rest!
I was really excited to see where the second volume of this series went, but was disappointed to find that it spends an awful lot of time unfolding a plot point that was pretty easily guessed at in the first volume. I'm hoping that the pace picks up again with the next installment, because I really liked all the characters that had been introduced and would like to see how the story progresses.
I received access to this title via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So, my feeling about this was right. This volume is unfolding a plot I guessed in the first one. But - I am not saying I did not enjoyed it. New characters, more demon-racoon-thing, more action. I would like to see how story will progress so I will continue reading new issues.
Babyteeth Vol 2 begins with a nice summary of Vol 1. While that is nice for readers beginning here, it spoils the surprises in Vol 1 so I would recommend reading them in order. Also, if you want to read Vol 1 first, please don’t read the rest of this review since it contains SPOILERS for that volume.
I loved Vol 1 of this series. As I stated in my 5 star review of Vol 1, I couldn’t wait for volume 2 and grabbed it off NetGalley as soon as it appeared.
This story begins immediately after the first with Heather, Sadie and baby Clark travelling on a commercial airplane flown by the girls’ dad. The group is accompanied by the wizard Dancy and headed for the Maine castle built for Clark by the dark cultish group, the Way. In the meantime, the quasi-governmental group, the Silhouette, is trying once again to kill them. Both groups believe that Clark is the antichrist, born to usher in the end times. For the Way that is good news but for the Silhouette it is not. Are both groups insane? Well, little Clark does only drink blood and when he cries people bleed and sometimes disappear.
While still a good horror story, this volume doesn’t have the big ‘Clark is who?’ surprise element of Vol 1. There are a few smaller twists in the plot to keep it interesting. An adorable “fire-breathing murder raccoon” and Sadie’s backstory are intriguing. The relative of a past adversary also appears.
Babyteeth Vol 2 collects issues #6-10. Single issues continue to be published so I can’t wait for Vol 3. 4 stars!
Thanks to the publisher, Aftershock Comics, and NetGalley for an advanced copy.
Darcy takes Sadie and her family to a run-down castle that is in fact a front for a community hidden away from the world. Its purpose is to shelter the King until it reaches maturity. Surprisingly, the mayor is the Sadie's mother Christine. She reveals that Clark is the most recent reincarnation of the Devil's son who will bring about the end times
antichrist baby and his family continue their adventures which mainly involves trying not to be killed, antichrist baby's aunt has some ill advised sex with her psycho wizard step brother, and antichrist baby, aunt, and adorable flying demon raccoon get sucked through a portal into a hellworld. 4/5.
I really enjoyed the first installment of Babyteeth, however I honestly couldn't bring myself to finish this second volume. It was slow moving, and I simply lost interest. I'll wait to hear more about the third installment before I retry this volume. Even though the story itself lost my interest, I thoroughly enjoyed the artwork.
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Better than Vol. 1 in some ways, but not as good in other ways. The story progresses well & there are some cool developments, but in some places the artwork seemed pretty rough which made me think it was a bit rushed. It's a fun story & I'm looking forward to Vol. 3.
Whelp, that went non-stop. A lot goes down in this second volume, and there are a lot of surprising twists. Being a teenage mother is hard enough. Discovering that you’ve given birth to a blood drinking, apocalyptic, possible anti-Christ is worse. Discovering who is at the centre of the group of people offering sanctuary is? Ruh roh. The Coyote and his story is gorgeous. After losing his daughter after she was killed trying to kill the Chosen Child, you’d expect drama. But wOw 😲
I like this, but it just isn't grabbing me the way Redneck did. We've got the continuing adventures of Sadie Ritter, mother of the Antichrist, and her dysfunctional family. This time out, they find themselves at an underground compound owned by "The Way," a group formed to protect Satan's bloodline and make sure that any potential Antichrist can grow up in peace. Turns out one of the top people in the way is Sadie's absent mother, Christine, who is just a winner of a person, drugging her daughter and stealing her grandson. The Coyote, one of the top operatives of "The Source," a group that exists to oppose The Way, is hot on the Ritters' trail. And we get some more background on Dancy and the demon raccoon. I like the weird story, though sometimes it moves a bit too quickly for my taste. The art just isn't doing it for me. Garry Brown was a great choice for Black Road, a down and gritty look at Viking life, but his blocky work just isn't detailed enough here to effectively carry the story and there were times where I was wondering just what the heck was going on. Still, I'm on board for this ride and looking forward to Volume 3.
I've enjoyed Donny Cates' Babyteeth, but I have a confession: I find this graphic novel series to be largely forgettable. I read Volume 2 in one sitting 3 days ago and I honestly couldn't remember what happened until I reopened it in preparation of this review. I had a similar experience with the first book.
I'm not sure what it is with Babyteeth, because I have enjoyed both volumes that I've finished, but it's like my brain is filing it into some black hole where it just like, disappears. This may be a series that is better suited for a one-sitting marathon than to be read individually.
In looking at the Aftershock Comics webpage on Babyteeth, it seems that this series could be ending within the 4th volume. I've only read the first two, but it feels like we are just getting started. Though, I have to say that this 2nd volume had a very dense, fast-paced plot. If I am being honest, it was a bit... too much at times.
I rated Donny Cates' Babyteeth Volume 2 4 out of 5 stars. I think this series would is PERFECT to be made into a short Netflix series. Its good. I'm off to read the 3rd volume as I try to find out if it is great.
'Babyteeth, Vol 2: Razed' by Donny Cates with art by Garry Brown continues the saga of the teenage girl who has given birth to the antichrist.
Sadie, Heather and baby satan are on the run. They've got weird company and an demonic raccoon just showed up on the wing of their plane. They end up in a dilapidated castle in Maine that hides more than it seems. Things don't settle down though as extremists out to stop the baby somehow know where the super secret hideout is.
It's an over the top story, and the first volume wasn't bad, but this one just kind of lost me. Maybe the premise is wearing on me. Also the art is pretty vague and the coloring is just murky and bad.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Aftershock Comics, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
Sadie and her family, including baby Clark (who might be the Antichrist), fly to a possible safe haven with a cult.
'Safe haven with a cult' - when has that ever worked out well? I enjoy Sadie trying to just keep herself and her baby alive from day to day. Baby doesn't like breast milk so how do you supply him with blood? They learn that taking a demon baby on a plane can be even more chaotic than a flight with a normal baby - at least when that normal baby screeches, you don't start bleeding! No more complaints from me about kids on a plane. I liked the introduction of Marty the fire-breathing devil racoon who is apparently a protector for demon baby.
Come on folks - what's not to like!? I'll definitely be reading the next volume which is apparently titled "Terrible Twos". Perfect!
This has a lower rating than I’d expected. Admittedly this was all meat without the happy ending. But the ongoing story is one of the best in ongoing Comics right now. It’s a 5 Star book. It just gets low ratings because the author is doing the book the right way without giving the readers their satisfied conclusions at the end of every 5 issues. And that pisses me off that readers don’t appreciate that. It forces authors to alter what could have been the best story they could tell in order to satisfy readers who need their stories neat and ordered in 5 issue arcs. Screw them! 5 stars. If you think the empire strikes back is the best Star Wars, then you’ll agree.
Not as good as the first volume which had the surprise factor of combining Juno with Rosemary's Baby. The artwork felt less stylish and some characters like the warlock or the demon are drawn rather badly. Maybe because they are demonic.
The story took some turns that felt woke like all the bad guys are middle aged & white, some story turns made zero sense like the whole Coyote story arc. Also the whole family unit that protects Clark seem completely unfazed by the fact that he is doom personified. If you want good story telling over several volumes have a look at Scarlet or Brigg's Land. I'll give volume 3 a chance to see if it improves to the levels of vol 1
