Alfa is a writer of poetic thoughts. She holds degrees in English Literature as well as Radiologic Sciences.
From a wide-planked porch in Kentucky, Alfa is most likely indulging in ice tea while painting a furniture piece some fabulous shade of turquoise, or crafting something extraordinary out of vintage buttons and brooches.
I've read a lot of these "poem" books recently. And I must say, this is one of the better ones. I actually enjoyed it, thought it was emotional and raw. I've read some where they tend to repeat themselves, sometimes word for word. This one wasn't like that. Had a theme but she didn't fill the pages with the same exact thoughts. Nice flow.
*CAPTIVE* She was like the moon Held captive in the Confines of the darkness, And glowing In spite of it
If your heart is tired, exhausted even- this book might be for you.
If you've lost a loved one who held the key to your heart, etched their name on the walls, locked the door, and bent the key- you may find comfort in this book.
If your heart has a softness about it, yet is guarded just enough to not let anyone get too close - perhaps you'd feel seen and even understood.
Alfa knows heartbreak almost as well as she knows healing and in her beautifully written book, I Find you in the Darkness, Alfa brings her 'A' game. This book is as lovely as all of her others and offers something to everyone who reads it.
With poems like ‘Wreckage’, ‘Proximity’, and ‘Thunderclap’, Alfa goes a little deeper and brings her signature raw, unapologetic honesty to her readers – something circa Abandoned Breaths.
There is no poem or quote written by Alfa (or anyone else) that so completely describes the woman behind the pen like the opening line in her poem ‘Wreckage’ - “she would lay down her life to stop others from experiencing pain”, and she would and the way she has written this book with her classic beautiful, unapologetic vulnerability weaved around her strength and resilience is nothing short of stunning.
In ‘New Love’ Alfa captures and bottles that extraordinary feeling that speaks louder than the title, and she pours it all over her pages. Alfa writes, ‘I am youth and eager lips. Clingy limbs, and raw emotions.” - a perfect recollection of exactly what it feels like to dip into new love.
This book is a treasure, one that will remain on the shelves of poetry lovers for decades, perhaps centuries, after we are long gone.
I’ve been obsessed with books since I was a child, and I’ve learned that each period of my life brings a new appreciation for different authors and genres. In this current period, Alfa is my diamond in the rough. (Quick congrats to her for being signed!)
I Find You In the Darkness is a soul-purging, deep dive read. It’s love and heartache. Pain and beauty. And woven together with threads of relatable magic. Alfa has always had a talent for understanding her reader. She digs words from her own bones and serves them in gritty, raw truths. She leaves you to discover yourself in them. She touches the darkest recesses of your mind and sheds light on all those things you try to keep hidden. My favorite piece in this book is called Dangerous on page 169: “and for the first time in your life — you feel that your difference is not a detraction, but an attribute that makes you feel special. Your different is what makes your heart so alluring.” Her words are brilliantly boundless, and I am captivated by each one.
I will say, for those familiar with Alfa’s normal style and layout, this book is a bit different. It has a more modern, minimalistic vibe while incorporating pieces of art and shading. It is still a beautiful book, though, and I happily take it with me everywhere I go.
2 to 3 stars... the artwork is great and visually it's a lovely book... the poetry... eh.
I think some of it was good or alright, I think a lot of it should have been redrafted. I dont know but it felt like a poetry book that needed more time to sit to then be reshaped. I think it was okay. But the artwork the accompanied the poems and the artwork that transitioned are done well and sometimes make more sense for the poem.
I’ve decided to give this book 3 stars, but I really think it deserves a 3.5 since it did make me cry on some of the pages. The poetry I’ve been reading recently has really been letting me down quite a bit. I am a strong believer in that Poetry has no rules. It’s very free and all authors sort of have their own ways of doing things which I love for them. But that also comes with the fact that most readers of Poetry enjoy certain styles of writing more than others. For those past poetry books, they just weren’t really my style. However, this piece was different, it hit me different. While I still think most the poems setups and styles weren’t really for me, they still made me feel something, and that’s really all that poetry is meant for. For you to feel something and cry on some of the pages.
This collection of poetry is full of grief, pain, heartbreak and more than a few poems about unhealthy relationships. But through the whole thing there is this underlying current telling you that you can survive this there is hope and you’re stronger than you think you are. To stand up and to keep going. This isn’t the type of poetry I normally gravitate to but I’m glad I read this. I devoured it in a single sitting I just couldn’t put it down.
I've been reading a lot of poetry books lately and I noticed that some authors try so hard with their poetry that their words don't feel natural thus ended up being cringe-worthy, cliche and all in all cheesy. I enjoyed I find you in the darkness by Alfa a lot because it gave me a different vibe from the rest of the poetry books out there. A different but a good vibe. It was honest and her writings spoke to me. The book is also beautiful inside out. The cover, artwork and font satisfy my aesthetic. I have to admit that this book was originally a cover buy but instead of disappointing me, it ended up surprising me. Kudos, Alfa.
I am such a huge fan of this poet. I follow her on all her social media platforms. Her writing has always spoke to me. She writes with such fearlessness and heart. I feel her emotions coming out of the pages. This is definitely a poetry book I'll be reading over and over again.
It’s well printed and assembled, along with the illustrations. However, I feel like most of the poems could be re-arranged to be more impactful. Some could have also been omitted, there were quite a few that really tugged on my emotions but it felt like a slow burn poetry book.
This was a random choice at BBW sale.I am a huge fan of poetry and after reading so much of poetry books most of the other books I felt so monotonous. Yet this one surprised me. Beautifully written and cannot wait to read the other books of the author.
This book of poems is all about souls connecting. In the good ways and in the bad. Through thick and thin, pain and anguish, Alfa Holden really delves deep into emotions to show the reader the love and heartbreak throughout this piece. Every word means something and every page leads the reader down the path of love and heartbreak.
I have read a lot of poem books lately, and I have to say that this is definitely one of my favorite ones yet. It is very emotional and raw, which is extremely captivating. With poems such as "Wreckage" and "Thunderclap" Alfa Holden dives even deeper into the rawness of her emotional crevices that I'm not sure she even knew were possible. Her honesty in the pieces are so gut-wrenching as well as tear-jerking that it is just very unapologetic, but beautiful at the same time. If you are a person who is interested in poetry, I would highly recommend this book because it takes you to the true meaning of poetry--the rawness, the beauty, the honesty, the emotion. It's all there and it is expressed so simply and beautifully.
It is even better when it is read over and over again at different times in one's life. That's why this poetry book is so captivating. It is relatable in most situations throughout one's life. We all interpret things differently and the rawness of the pieces can be interpreted to many people's emotions in different ways throughout one's life. The book of poetry is so natural. It does not sound like Alfa Holden was trying really hard to sound poetic, but that it just came naturally to her. Because of this, she avoided many cliches that could have appeared in her work simply because it is so raw and about love and heartbreak. However, she was able to be original and I think that is due to her honesty.
Alfa Holden's poetry leaps off the pages like auras swirling around the reader's body. She captivates her readers with emotions that I never knew possible.
3.5⭐️ I could feel the emotion behind the words in this poetry book. I had empathy for the author’s pain. I connected with some of these poems, with memories of my past. I could feel the author’s growth as well as my own.
I got halfway through this book and decided I couldn’t finish it. I’m not the type of person who normally doesn’t finish books but this was a total letdown.
It started off strong with some dark poems I thought were complex enough with the book’s aesthetic that I enjoyed them. Then, it was like a switch flipped and I was reading just another generic love/loss/healing book that reminded me too much of Rupi Kaur and Atticus’s books - authors I’m not a fan of.
I’ve had this book on my shelf for a WHILE because I love the aesthetic of the cover and the title was intriguing! Even the poems at the beginning were more death/loss-focused, which is actually what I hoped the rest of the book would be like. (I LOVE dark poems!)
Also, I don’t know why the book was sectioned because the poems just seemed to bounce around between the themes and the sectioning felt useless to me.
Part of me is curious if the rest of the book is like this or if it gets better… BUT I got halfway through (maybe not even halfway) and was just bored so I doubt it.
For people who haven’t read poetry before or who like popular poets, you might enjoy this book. But personally, I don’t recommend it. If you want recommendations for good poetry books, I’ve got a long list for you (and this book isn’t on it).
Alfa is an original in a sea of similar. Her work immediately stands out from the rest, she has an art and it is writing and not one word she writes will convince you otherwise. It is no wonder at all she is growing in success as an author, you can see in the depth and breadth of her art that she not only loves what she does but has a true ability much like a natural dancer or painter. I am drawn to her work by its once in a life time beauty and capture of all things that seem to matter in this world. Alfa is unforgettable, exquisite, raw and at the same time sublimely executed. I can't recommend her highly enough.
First let me say, I love modern poetry books. Especially any written by women or POC. I don't have the usual hang ups about them being 'whiney' or whatever those pretentious butts have to say about most of them.
This one? DNF.
The poems are so shallow, there's no rhythm, they feel sloppy and there was maybe 1 or 2 in the over 100 that I read that made any kind of emotional impact. I get what she was going for, but this was so boring. I had to force myself to keep reading as far as I did. I'm sorry but a 14 year old could have put this together.
I haven’t read a lot of poetry yet, however, I am expanding my collection. This book really inspired me to pick up more of the genre.
Full of heartbreak and made me feel ALL the feels, I really enjoyed this collection. I was going through some similar feelings, so at times it was all too real, but overall it gave me a perspective on things I might not have found.
much better than 'milk and honey', 'the princess saves herself in this one', and 'the sun and her flowers', i don't know why this book isn't more famous, only about 100 rating what? definitely some great books.
I read this book during the Infinity War Boss Battle for the Avengers Initiative Reading Challenge.

Categorized Ratings:
»Technicality(Is this work accurate in being categorized as poetry via use of structure, meter, imagery, symbolism, allegory, syntax, sound, rhyme, rhythm) (Free form gets slack on this rating in the fact that it more stream of consciousness and less poetry) 3
»Personal Enjoyment(Did I personally enjoy this collection, did it resonate with me?) 3
»TAACT(Were the TAACT elements handled well and with accuracy?) 5
»Marketing Accuracy (Are the poems about what we are led to believe from the synopsis, cover, title, etc?) 3
»AVERAGE CATEGORIZED RATING 3.5 Overall: All in all, I found this OK. I just don't think freeform poetry will ever be my favorite thing… BUT that said, there were a few parts in here I really liked! It wasn't organized very well, though, particularly topically… and it was more just thoughts written than artfully written poems… so if you like thoughts written, this is your jam! For me, though, not so much.
I'm not going to lie, the pretty artwork is what first drew me towards the book. As luck would have it, the few entries I skimmed while in the bookstore and what ultimately lead me to buy the book were great. It wasn't until I actually read through the book that I discovered how uneven and unorganized the writing was and how some of the passages didn't even make sense. It was like someone took a Thesaurus, ran it through AI, and spat out some monstrosity that was supposed to make me feel deep things.
It's supposed to be a collection about passion and pain, but it was all over the place, I felt like I was reading something through the lens of a schizophrenic. One minute it's about losing a male love interest, then it was about a family member, then it was about the finding passion with someone who according to the accompany art work is a woman, but then it goes back to discussing the abuse suffered by the loss of love from someone else entirely, and then losing your self esteem. I felt like I should have filed a claim with my insurance for all the whiplash I experienced while reading.
I wanted so badly to like this collection, but the lack of cohesion or organization made it very difficult to enjoy. Add to it that out of all the poems, only about 15% of it was good (and coherent).
Discovering Rupi Kaur's work last year put on a path to find similar poets. Unfortunately, it's been a hit or miss situation with discovering some phenomenal writing that touched my very core, but then I find duds like this where it makes me feel shallow and stupid for falling for the pretty photos.
Honestly a 2 star rating, but bumped to 3 stars because I liked the artwork and layout.
Recently, I have been getting into the poetry genre, up to this point I hadn’t really found anything that –
A – I really understood and B – That I could relate to on any level.
Then one day while scrolling I came across a book with the most gorgeous cover and title (I’m a sucker for a good cover and title) and decided to purchase.
That book was ‘I will find you in the darkness’ by Alfa.
The title spoke to me, I had a feeling that this could be the book that might change my opinion of the poetry genre, it turned out to not only change my opinion but also my life.
We are all on our own journey of self discovery, but sometimes we need a little help, we need to know that we are not walking this road alone. The content of this book is emotional, raw and intense.
We walk hand in hand with Alfa, as she takes us on a journey through poetry, a journey of the mind and soul. There are so many poems here that are relatable and so powerful – I loved every minute of reading this dime of a book!
In my opinion Alfa has literally created a masterpiece, her own journey through dark and light is described with such emotion that I felt was so honest and straight to the point.
Some of my favourite poems were ‘Death’, ‘Player’, ‘Today’, ‘Pulling Away’, ‘Insensitive’, ‘Rewrite’, ‘Where were you’ and also ‘Sleep Never Comes’. There were many more that I loved and felt a strong personal connection with, but rather than list them all I’m just going to strongly recommend that you pick this one up!
*I feel that I should mention that this books content could be triggering for some people*
