Two best friends rewrite the rules of friendship, love and family…and change everything they thought they knew about motherhood

Paris Kahn Fraser has it all—a successful career as an assistant district attorney, a beautiful home in New York City, and a handsome, passionate husband who chose her over having a family of his own. Neal’s dream of fatherhood might have been the only shadow in their otherwise happy life…until Paris’s best friend comes to town.

Naira Dalmia never thought she’d be a widow before thirty. Left reeling in the aftermath of her husband’s death, all she wants is to start over. She trades Mumbai for New York, and rigid family expectations for the open acceptance of her best friend. After all, there isn’t anything she and Paris wouldn’t do for each other.

But when Paris asks Naira to be their surrogate, they’ll learn if their friendship has what it takes to defy society, their families and even their own biology as these two best friends embark on a journey that will change their lives forever.

Wry, daring and utterly absorbing, The Object of Your Affections is an unforgettable story about two women challenging the norms…and the magic that happens when we choose to forge our own path.

A surprisingly poignant read! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The Object of Your Affections is about two best friends, Paris and Naira. Paris is an assistant district attorney and is living the dream with a handsome husband and hugely successful career. Paris’ husband Neal chooses her over potential fatherhood because Paris doesn’t want to have children.

Naira, Paris’ best friend, has become a widow in her twenties. Naira wants to hit the reset button and start over, so she moves from Mumbai to New York to be close to Paris.

Will their friendship stand the test of time when Paris asks Naira to be a surrogate? Will they be able to overcome their families’ and society’s judgments?

I loved the thoughtfulness of this story. We hear from both Paris and Naira in alternating perspectives. I enjoyed the culture infused in the narrative, and I especially loved how authentically Paris and Naira’s relationship is portrayed. A complex set of events arises with this potential surrogacy, and I was hooked on how this would all play out for Paris, Neal, and Naira.

Overall, The Object of Your Affections is a thoughtful and original portrayal of best friends facing difficult life choices together.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

A thought provoking story steeped in tradition, culture, friendship, and love!

This was a book that gave me a lot of food for thought, a complicated story full of complex relationships. When I was finished I really wanted to talk to one of my book friends about this, however the usual suspects have not read it yet, so I am waiting because I have things to discuss! This book stretched the meaning of family and the expectations of friends.

Paris has it all, a successful career, a beautiful New York apartment, an attentive loving husband. However Paris had a troubled past that has led to issues she has yet to get over. Naira and Paris were best friends when at NYU, but after Naira move back to India and married a man that Paris did not approve of, the girls drifted apart. Naira has returned to New York her husband is deceased and her reputation has been tarnished. Can the friends see past their differences? Will Naira do Paris the ultimate favor, and at what cost?

This book had a unique premise that asked a tough question, would you be willing to be a surrogate for your BFF? Throw in the fact that these ladies are just beginning to repair their friendship and the traditional Indian culture, it is all very complicated. The thing I found most complicated of all, the thing that confounded me, perplexed me, and still has me reeling is... Paris doesn’t want kids!! Yes that is not a typo Paris does not want kids, her husband Neal does very much, and he sacrificed that to be with her. SO Paris is going to give him the ultimate gift of a child, and her answer to this dilemma a surrogate? WHAT? OK well that’s solves 9 months of the dilemma, what about the rest of the kids life? Paris was such a self-centered frustrating character, but the girl was smart, so how she thought this was going to solve anything is beyond me. Then we have husband Neal who was so elated to have a baby he couldn’t even recognize the fact that his wife was completely repulsed by children? The only person in this situation who saw A flaw in this plan was Naira. Unfortunately she felt as though she owed Paris something and she had her own reason for having a baby. All the parents were against it, but nobody brought up the fact that Paris didn’t want kids not once? Ugh this drove me nuts, and it is not a spoiler because it is all laid out in the first couple chapters, maybe even the blurb. I still enjoyed the story especially the cultural aspects and the jewelry aspects, however this was a big sticking point for me and it drove me a bit batty as I’m sure you can tell.

Falgumi Kothari has crafted an intriguing tale bursting with culture, friendship, family, love, and complications! Recommend!

🎧🎧🎧 This story was told from the alternating perspectives of Paris and Naira. The audio had two separate narrators giving each character their own unique voice. Simone Lewis voices Paris and Shiromi Arserio voices Naira. I thought both narrators did a very good job my only tiny complaint is there could’ve been a little more inflection especially in Sharomi’s performance.

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need

3.5 stars rounded up!

I sighed letting love fill the pockets of doubt inside my damaged heart. There was nothing I wouldn't do for this man. Or for the precious sweeties we'd made. If that meant having to risk heartbreak from time to time, so be it.

Paris Fraser is a successful woman who lives in New York with her husband. She has a great job, is wealthy and is enjoying life. Her husband Neal is also extremely successful, handsome and attentive. However trouble arises when Neal is enthusiastic about having a child and Paris has expressed that she does not want to bear children. Paris has an estranged best friend, Naria, who is a widow, at 3o years old, and is moving back to New York. They reconnect at a mutual friends wedding and has out the past.

Paris just wants to make her husband happy. To do this, she must figure out the best way to have a child but not actually be pregnant and take care of the child full time. Surrogacy is the way the couple chooses to go and Paris asks her best friend Naria to be the surrogate. The journey that these two best friends are put on really tests their friendship and it also tests Paris' marriage to Neal. Do things get messy when the surrogate is your best friend?

This book was a really quick read for me - I read it in about a day. I really enjoyed the journey of friendship that Paris and Naria took together. The situations that they were put in felt like they could happen to any of us and our best friends. It made me really think if I was in this situation would I want my bff to be my surrogate because I know them and can totally trust them? Or would it be easier to detach afterwards due to the fact that the surrogate is a stranger and contractually they have to go away.

I also enjoyed learning about the culture in this book. It was interesting how the family dynamics worked. There were a lot of issues surrounding the surrogacy choice, some financial decisions that were made and there was a lot of conflict with parents and what their children decided to do. Some of the comments that the parents would say to Paris, Naria and Neal were really upsetting but I understand that this happens to people everyday.

The only thing that was a little bit off for me was the ending. I felt like the decision Paris made and the actual end of the story ended so abruptly that I wish it had been a tad bit longer so that it felt real and drawn out. I would have enjoyed seeing Paris and Neal's conversation that dealt with their marital issues and how they would resolve that.

Overall it was a cute book about friendship, family and culture. If you are looking for a quick read as well this one is for you!

The Object of Your Affections is a dnf at 40% for me.

On what I did read:

Paris was a collection of neuroses passing as a character and Naira was so naive it was hard to believe she was close to thirty. Neal never seemed like someone who wanted a family--he was a bridge to build the plot around--and I never felt that he and Paris truly had the affection or even the great sex that she was so fixated on.

I think that Paris' issues regarding why she didn't want a family were fascinating but it was all telling and not showing. In the end, The Object of Your Affections is a great idea that needed better fleshed out characters and a plot that needed substance behind the ideas that frame it.

Fact about me… I don’t have kids. I have been on the receiving end of SO many rude comments from people: “You better get on it!” “You aren’t getting any younger!” “Don’t you know that’s what women are PUT HERE for?!” It’s funny how those are the things thrown out first - before even asking why, or knowing the whole story. I commend people who make the decision to just not have kids. Simply because they don’t want to! There is NOTHING that says every woman HAS to have kids… and to be honest.. I have known a few that definitely should NOT have had them.

OK rant over. I related so much to Paris - she’s got everything she wants but doesn’t want kids. I’m definitely not disgusted of them as she is though! And they don’t cry when I’m around or run away from me - in fact.. I might come to your house and spend the most time with your kids and puppies over you and the adults! I tend to attract them both like magnets. I would throw myself in front of a bus for my nieces and nephew…. but Paris.. um no. Like not at all. She loathes children. OK thats fine. Her choice.

Naira, her BFF is the opposite. Adores them. So why not ask her to be her surrogate? Why not ask her to be involved and help raise the child too - because Paris needs to do this one thing for her husband - one thing to keep him happy. What could possibly go wrong!?!

I loved this relationship - these two best friends could not be more different and sometimes that’s the best way that friends can work. It’s a controversial arrangement for sure and it made for a fantastic read about love, friendship, desires, conformity, and above all, creating your own path and sticking to what you believe in. A great read.

Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours, @AuthorFalguni and @graydonhouse for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful story.

Linda’s Book Obsession Reviews “The Object of Your Affections” By Falguni Kothari, Graydon House Books, February 19, 2019

Falguni Kothari has written a unique, intriguing, dramatic, entertaining and thought-provoking novel. The Genres for this Novel are Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and Contemporary Fiction. The timeline for this story is set in the present, and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or the events in the story. Falguin Kothari describes her colorful cast of characters as complex, and complicated.

I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friendship, marriage, relationships, communication, love and hope. I love that Falguni Kothari presents some unorthodox and unconventional ideas to the story. How refreshing!!

Paris appears to have it all. She is an attorney, and has a handsome, sexy, wealthy creative husband, Neal. They live in New York City. Paris made it quite clear to her husband that she doesn’t want children. As a compromise, she agrees they can use a surrogate. That is not as easy as it seems.

Naira and Paris had been the best of friends, until a misunderstanding. Naira is now a young widow and has many responsibilities back in India. When the two reconnect at a wedding, Paris has what she feels is a wonderful idea, and an even better idea who the surrogate should be.

Can this “modern type of family” work out? There is some humor and quirky family members and traditions. I would highly recommend this delightful unusual novel for those readers who enjoy a thought-provoking story. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

The Object of Your Affections was SUCH A GOOD READ. It dealt with friendship, betrayal, marriage, death...and yet managed to be lighthearted, lightly humorous, and substantive at the same time. I really loved the history and the progression of the two main characters, friends Paris and Naira's friendship. Both women, who look to be extremely wealthy, healthy women are dealing with their fractured friendship. After tragedy occurs, Naira is determined to create a new life for herself in America, while Paris is happily married to a gorgeous celebrity jeweler/playboy/devoted husband and wanting to find a surrogate for their unborn child. This brings Naira and Paris together, where the most impossibly emotional situations arise.

I really loved Falguni Kothari's amazing writing...I flew through the book so quickly because I found all of the characters to be relatable and REAL. There were definitely some tear-jerker moments, and situations that had me yelling OMG.

Definitely recommend this one!

The Object of Your Affections has a very interesting premise. After three years of marriage to her husband Neal, Paris is determined not to stand in the way of him getting everything he wants. Though what he wants is a baby, and Paris has never wanted to have children. After reuniting with her recently widowed best friend Naira, Paris comes up with a plan. She asks Naira to be the surrogate to her and Neal’s baby, and to take on a co-parenting role for the child as she does not see herself fit.

This novel starts out slowly and unfortunately stays that way. The extra details and conversations cause the plot to be somewhat convoluted. Many different topics are addressed that are relevant in today’s society such as alternate birthing plans, family obligation, grief, and feminism. I loved the idea of this story, but found that it could have been more impactful if the scope was narrowed and the wording more concise. Different cultures are included- Neal is Scottish/Indian and speaks in a thick accent, Naira has recently moved to New York from Mumbai, but to be honest I didn’t see enough of how each person’s culture was relevant in the storyline.

The pressure to be a mother is something that many women deal with. I kept reading because I was truly interested to see how Paris would work this out with Neal, while staying true to herself. There is a strong climax right near the ending, which was very effective in expressing each of the three characters’ feelings. However, it fell a bit flat after that and in the end I wasn’t satisfied with the happy ending. Though I didn’t love this book, it doesn’t mean that you won’t. There are some romantic, steamy scenes between Paris and Neal, and some heartwarming moments of true friendship between the two women.

Thank you @harlequinpublicityteam for sending me a copy of The Object of Your Affections by Falguni Kothari. Wealthy, young, and culturally diverse, Paris Kahn Fraser and her husband Neal seem to have it all. Neal wants a family however and Paris has told him all along that she isn’t cut out to be a mother. Wearing the scars of foster care, she focuses all her attention on her career.

In steps Paris’s estranged college roommate Naira. After reconciling their friendship, Paris asks her to be their surrogate.

There were some interesting topics covered (albeit somewhat preachy at times) but throughout the book, I thought I was reading a sequel. I really needed the prequel of Paris’s childhood, college days with Naira, and the story of her early relationship with Neal to fully invest in the characters. A lot of time was spent throwing in details of the past and at points, those teasers were more interesting than the current story. So for me, a good premise but lacking in execution.

I received a free review copy through Netgalley. This does not affect my rating or opinions of this book.

DNF at 17%.

While the little asides with Neal's passion for designing and creating innovative jewelry are interesting, I haven't connected with any of the characters and every other paragraph seems to be a strange metaphor. (At one point, Paris compares her friendship with Naira to her zipper fly: stuck, necessitating some back-and-forth to make it work again.) I also found it difficult to keep a straight face when she described Neal's eyes as "blue-blue" (twice so far!), or when she started waxing poetic about toxic and nontoxic relationships, and how maybe in the end both are a lot of work.

The actual plot, with Naira's family drama and Paris & Neal's search for a surrogate, is interesting enough; if I didn't have a million more books to get through, I could probably finish this one without too much of a struggle. Lots of eye rolling might be involved, though.

"The Object of Your Affections" follows two former BFFs who are reconnecting and redefining their relationship. Paris was adopted as a baby and then again when she was older after her first adopted parents failed her. She is not really interested in being a parent. However, the love of her life, Neal, is very suited to being a father. Paris feels like she has come up with the solution in surrogacy, which will allow them to have children without her personally becoming pregnant.

Years before, she and her BFF Naira had a big fight and falling out. After reconnecting at another friend's wedding, they are both interested in rekindling their friendship. Naira and Paris both have big favors to ask the other- Naira for Paris's help with a business and Paris for Naira to be the surrogate mother.

Told in alternating perspectives, we gain insight into the complex relationship of surrogate and parents as well as looks into the wealthy in New York City and around the globe. I had a hard time connecting to the characters, as their pasts felt more like statements, and I had a hard time getting a handle on who they are/were. The story of Naira's husband and her family was slow coming and hard to really grasp.

In terms of what I liked, I liked the diversity of characters and the discussion of surrogacy and the potential problems/issues that can arise around it, even when a close friend is involved. However, beyond not really getting a feel for the two main characters, I also did not understand why Paris, who really had no interest in parenting, felt that surrogacy was the answer. Pregnancy, while difficult, was not really her problem- she had a problem with understanding healthy parent-child relationships and was not interested in motherhood. I did not really get why surrogacy was the answer. I feel like a better and clearer backstory on this would have been helpful- for instance, if she was concerned about complications of pregnancy and childbirth or interested in being a mother but not interested in the process of becoming one, I could have understood the solution of surrogacy. However, being a parent is much more than just giving birth, so I am not really sure I had a good handle on this "solution" or her reasons behind it all.

I was intrigued enough to keep reading and learn more about the experiences of these characters. However, I did not feel like I understood them enough to really get into their lives emotionally. Please note that I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

A good cover is always a nice way to start a reading journey and that is what initially attracted me the Falguni Kothari’s book. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the Suzy Approved Book Tour and Kathleen Carter for bringing such a unique book into my reading life. The cover is alluring and simply reading the blurbs and synopsis makes you want to dive right in.

There is a richness to the book created by a unique plot, complex relationships and a plot that cultivates discussion beyond the book itself. I like a book that makes me think, provokes discussion, and sheds light on topics that I may not fully be knowledgeable about. I appreciate Falguni’s unique style of writing. She dives into the topic surrogacy in a mindful manner that paints a thoughtful picture of a world that I am not familiar with.

Thank you for writing a book that provokes the reader to want to talk about it. As a reader, it made me think, examine various emotions, and observe various interesting topics be interwoven in a seamless manner.

I loved this novel of friendship that dealt with such heavy issues as surrogacy, the way women live in the modern world and make choices, relationships and cultural differences and norms. Paris and Naira are friends, reuniting at a wedding after being estranged. Naira is more traditional, and is reeling from the accusations of fraud leveled against her husband; Paris is a modern woman who loves her job and her husband, but is not interested in having children. There is so much depth to this novel, and you can tell the author loved her characters. Recommended.

Witty, charming and uniquely beautiful, THE OBJECT OF YOUR AFFECTIONS is a novel about reconnecting best friends and the reality of surrogacy. Written in dual narration, the reader is introduced to Paris and Naira. Paris wants to give her husband a child, but being physically pregnant is out of the question. So, what better way to rekindle their friendship than with having Naira step in as the child bearer. I'm going to be honest, this is a very weird way of rekindling a friendship. Hey, we haven't spoken in a while, but do you want to hold and help me with my baby? And on top of that, a baby I don't really want, but it would make my husband happy. Yes, a bit odd, but welcome to Paris's mindset!

Now, I love when author's write characters that irk my soul. Falguni, did a phenemomal job in introducing personas that you didn't quite know how to feel about. One minute you think Paris is being a stuck up brat, and the next you find her honesty refreshing. As for Naira, at times she did not have a backbone, yet her loyalty as a best friend warmed my heart.

All in all, I thought THE OBJECT OF YOUR AFFECTIONS delightfully tackled many diverse topics of friendship and the stigma behind mothers who choose not to carry their own children. By the end, it seemed a bit abrupt, I wish the story would have been better developed by the time it reached the conclusion. Besides that, overall it exceeded my expectations since I don't read much of this genre. And I look forward to reading more works by Falguni, her writing is exquisite and the idea behind her storylines are uncommon and exceptional!

The Object of Your Affections written by @authorfalguni is novel about Friendship, relationships and family. Falguni writes this novel from the dual perspectives (Paris and Naira) of two best friends. Paris has everything she could ever want in life except a child. Naira is having a tough time in life having just losing her husband.

This complicated story will make you think and examine your own views on Relationships and Family. How far would you go to make someone else happy?

I really enjoyed this book and the feelings It brought out in me. Would I be someone else surrogate? Would I have children if it would make everyone else happy and not myself?

This book was super refreshing and complex read for me. Pick this book up if you love a character driven novel. Pick this book up if you want to have all the feelings.

I absolutely LOVED this book!!! Told in a dual narration manner, The Object of Your Affections tackles friendship, love, family, society, feminism, surrogacy, everything. Falguni did such an excellent job developing the characters within this story. I honestly couldn’t tell you if I loved Paris or Naira more. Plus, there’s secondary characters that the author put just as much effort into. I felt so immersed in this group of people that I almost forgot I didn’t actually know them. I loved learning about the Indian culture and about surrogacy. This storyline was so tastefully done and had me so dearly invested in these characters. The writing is beautiful and the plot is refreshing. The characters and their situations are messy, flawed and bursting with passion. The Object of Your Affections was just what I needed to break up my thriller spree. I highly recommend this to all of you!

The Object of Your Affections by @authorfalguni is a novel about two best friends told from the dual POV’s of both Paris and Naira. Paris is living in NYC with her husband Neal and despite never wanting kids, she’s decided to compromise and have 1 child with him via surrogate. Naira is living in Mumbai freshly widowed when she comes over to NYC for a wedding and reconnects with Paris. Despite tension from a previous estrangement, Paris wonders if Naira would be the perfect surrogate for her and Neal...⁣

What ensues is a though-provoking look at everything you thought you knew about friendships and family. There’s plenty of drama and romance as these three navigate what their new normal looks like in this unusual family circumstance. I enjoyed this one and it was really different than everything else I've been reading lately, which was super refreshing. Lovers of character-driven novels with complex relationship dynamics will enjoy this one!

I loved this book in spite of the too neat ending. I really felt for Paris through the whole book. She was put in a pretty bad situation, even though it was mostly her own fault through the choices she made. It’s just another reminder that if you are not a mother you are valued less. I really loved the writing in this book and the story of these two very different women.

The Object of Your Affections was an engaging, entertaining and thought provoking read. Through dual POV, Kothari tells the story of estranged friends Naira and Paris and how they navigate an arrangement for surrogacy. This book challenges the meanings of family, friendship and traditions. While I was not particularly fond of the main characters, I did enjoy the drama that rolled along through the book and the unique look at friendship and family.

Book Review: 💎💎💎/5 If you are wanting an unconventional read filled with steamy romance, complex relationships & a controversial subject matter then this would be the perfect fit! I found the premise of asking your estranged BFF to be a surrogate for yourself & your husband to be extremely intriguing, and even though I didn't particularly like the main character, Paris (let's just say, we probably wouldn't be friends), I did really enjoy her sexy husband, Neal, and her sweet friend, Naira. I found the ending to be a bit quick to wrap up, but I really enjoyed learning about the Indian culture & their family values & I found the book to be extremely well written, smart & unique! A fun Chick Lit read that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster!

I enjoyed "The Object of Your Affections." I thought it was an interesting storyline, but I did feel as if the first part was too drawn out and then the second part was too rushed. There was too much time spent over "should Naira be Paris' surrogate or not" and not enough about the pregnancy and all the complications and emotions it brought up for the characters. I also would have liked more info on the characters' history. Once again, it was a lot of buildup that seemed to fall flat once you got to what had happened. The unique plot did draw me in though, and I enjoyed this book.

"The things we do for love." This first line was a great start to a novel filled with a voice I loved from the start. A heartwarming story of surrogacy, family and friendship. I always love stories where women have choices that may not have been available to them in another time, and I loved the sense of empowerment in this one.

What a wonderful book about love, family, friendship and motherhood. It was well researched and the subject matter made me reminisce about my own experiences with surrogacy. The characters were true to life and the emotional reactions the author has written about their experience were spot on, in my opinion. Overall a unique story about the challenges of beginning a life of co-parenting and the strain put on friends and families learning to live with this modern situation. I loved this book SO much! Well done Ms. Kothari!

This was such a good book, engrossing and interesting, full of food for thought.
I loved the style of writing, how the writer handles themes like family, friendship, love, and betrayal.
I also enjoyed the plot and the well written cast of characters.
An interesting read, I'm happy I discovered this writer and I look forward to reading other book by this author.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all opinions are mine
