The pharmacist, Carolynn, pushes her glasses against her nose and looks over the prescription. “Mr. Little, you have taken these before, correct?” “Yes.” She takes a closer look at the prescription. “Wow,” she says under her breath. “That’s quite a heavy daily dose.” “Um, yes. Yes, it is.” “And, this is for… anxiety,” she says just as I say… “Anger."
Reese and Emma are a young couple struggling to make ends meet while raising their four-year-old son. They've got a lot of love, but love doesn't pay the bills. Things only get worse when their house is burned to the ground during what appears to be an attempted robbery. When Reese asks his dad for help and a place for his family to stay, his dad offers only one, urgent reply.
“Run. Now! Don't go back to your house. Don't look back on your neighborhood. Something dark is coming. Something evil."
That's when Reese Little learns that trolls are real; that the Norse legends ...the scourge of Vikings ...ugly, giant trolls - are real. And, they want something that belongs to his family.
This was so good! Very creative and original, complex and well plotted. I loved it, and if you like Norse mythology then this is definitely a read for you!
Most families have a dark secret or two. Reese's family secret gets his house burned down and forces him to run. BTW, trolls are real! And one evil troll has an ax to grind--literally--with the Little family.
Trolls are like, those so-ugly-they're-cute little things with colorful hair and a jewel in their belly, right?
Wrong, friend, and I really enjoyed the research the author put into the real mythology behind trolls.
I can't properly convey the maniacal glee with which I read this book! It will make you laugh and cry. I cried a lot, actually! There are some real heart-squeezing moments! It's unique in that this is an adventure that involves a whole family, not a lone wolf monster hunter out to save the world. Reese and Emma and little Hollis are flung into a world they know nothing about and suddenly have to navigate the cloaked world of trolls and dwarves, berserkers and magic, and not to mention Muninn the Raven. Their adventure takes them from a secluded Troll colony nestled in the Appalachians to the mountains and fjords of Norway and to an epic battle that will have you standing on your chair!
While Reese gets to explore his special super power I loved it that his wife doesn't sit on the sidelines with the baby, but straps on a pair of antique pistols and gets to learnin' how to shoot. She's one tough cookie and a mean mamma bear, let me tell you! Reese is a good husband and dad, brave enough to fight with his wife along side him, resisting the temptations of his heritage that could very easily make him not a nice person. And little Hollis is just cute as a button. :)
My first novel which I finished this year was Furious by Aaron Shaver. He's my publishing house brother and this book was so fun! I enjoyed reading it, even though I fell behind often and had to put it down between semesters. I'm glad I did finish it, because which it can be enjoyed by teens, adults can enjoy it, too. It was pretty fast-paced, which is great, because I hate it when books lag in the narration. It was told in first person between several narrators, which was mostly the main couple, Reese and Emma, occasionally a few others. I loved seeing a couple that was in love stay in love and stay strong. So often in American media, in happy, in-love couples are ripped apart with a lot of angst. But in this book, Reese and Emma's love never wavered, they stayed together, and were still entertaining, not boring. I'm also a mythology nerd and most of it has been Classical mythology, Greek and Roman. I love learning about other mythologies and cultural stories, and Furious had trolls and 'beserkers', warriors who could tap into their fury and do incredible things. The battle of Jotnar Valley reminded me of the Wizard Wars Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter, super exciting and action-packed! I recommend!
