Orphant Annie Story Book - Illustrated by Johnny Gruelle

Rate this book
In a delightful fairy tale style, this children’s book tells the wonderful tales of Little Orphant Annie through beautiful illustrations and prose. ‘Orphant Annie Story Book’ is written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle. Gruelle (1880 – 1930), was an American artist and political cartoonist, as well as a children’s book illustrator and author. The books of ‘The Raggedy Ann Series’ all feature their central protagonist, with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose – charting her considerable adventures. Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll. He drew a face on it, and from his bookshelf, pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, combining the names of two poems, ‘The Raggedy Man’ and ‘Little Orphant Annie.’ From this moment on, the much-loved children’s series went from strength to strength. Sought after by collectors, this re-printed edition showcases Gruelle’s original text, further enhanced by his wonderful colour drawings, in order that the two may be fully appreciated by young and old alike.

Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Johnny Gruelle was an American artist, political cartoonist, children's book author and illustrator (and even songwriter). He is known as the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. He had such confidence in his design that often he would create the final ink work without first sketching in pencil.

Lovely child's story that adults will enjoy too. Whimsical pictures add a great touch.
My copy is a hardback book and autographed by Kim Gruelle as a special present from my grandparents back in 1991
