Scornful Scones was a delightful visit to the small town of Estes Park, tagging along while Fred and Watson poke their nose in another mystery.
Katie’s delightful squeal of joy and Watson’s scrabbling feet as he rushes to get the treat he missed when it was thrown to him put an immediate smile on my face.
A small town takes a while to accept an outsider and Fred sure doesn’t make it easy for them. Everyone knows everyone’s business and they are just waiting for Fred to start questioning her suspects, wasting no time in letting the gossip fly.
These quirky characters and their furry friends are always a delight to visit, giving me some light mystery and smiles.
I don’t have any complaints about Scornful Scones. It was a nice change of pace from the heavy, gruesome, dark and dangerous stories that I immerse myself in, leaving me needing a fun read for a change of pace.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Scornful Scones by Mildred Abbott.
This was a really cute installment of this cozy series. Fred is still a thorn in a few peoples sides but once again she’s hot on the trail of murder. It’s also moves the romantic potential forward, just a bit, for her and Branson. Leo’s not entirely out of the picture though, I don’t think. There’s also new faces in town and in the bookshop. Very enjoyable, quirky mystery!
Book 5. Fred ( Winifred ) and Watson the corgi are back and Katie.. Food blogger Maxine have good reviews to Fred's bookshop Cozy Corgi. More for Katie. The baker up above the stairs of Fred's bookshop. Fred did not think she would have anyone work with her. But Katie was an awesome baker so Fred hired her because Fred thought the idea of a bakery would be great upstairs. Carla the owner of the Black Bear Roaster was going to be mad 😠that they got a great review. But if she did Fred and Katie went to Carla's introduction of a brand new line of espresso named after Carla's son in book 4. Fred and Katie found Harold Carla granddad helping out and Carla father in law Eustace. Eustace was not so nice. He chocked on a pastry while staring at Fred meanly, he ran and suddenly Carla screamed and Carla found Eustace dead. The last book Carla was suspect and she was again. Book 5 I good but it was not as good as the first 4. But I will still read them because I Love Watson the Corgi.
Fred is busy with her first tourist season in Estes Park since The Cozy Corgi opened. But she still finds time to attend an event at the Black Bear Roaster. Even though the owner can’t stand her, she stills needs to show her face. Wouldn’t you know it. She accidentally overhears an argument between two people and soon after one of them chokes to death. Fred and Watson are once again on the case.
So many fun things to talk about. I was especially excited about Ben and Nick. Twin brothers that couldn’t be more different. Fred hired Ben to work in her increasingly busy bookstore and bakery and is soon immersed in the job of his clearing his brother Nick’s name when he is arrested for murder. I had so many hopes about these two brothers. And had such fun reading whether things went the way I wanted.
Fred was a bit off her stride this time around. Not only because of her anxiety over possibly rekindling her romance with Sergeant Branson. But also because she struggled with not one but two suspicious deaths and, for the first time, had doubts about her ability to solve them. I sure struggled with trying to solve these myself. Without even realizing it, I retained in my head some clues that didn’t even appear to be clues. How did the author do that? When the big reveal came, I remembered all those hidden hints and had a now I see moment.
Watson, our furry friend, is his usual incorrigible self. He usually avoids most people, unless you are a regular dog biscuit enabler. He does have a crush on Park Ranger Leo and Fred’s stepfather Barry. He goes all silly when they’re around. And now there seems to be another human with mysterious charms for Watson to go all waggy tailed over.
More is revealed about the character’s of Estes Park. Two suspicious deaths kept me guessing. And lots of furry mayhem had me wearing a grin all through this one.
I’m more in love with this series than ever.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
This is such a fun cozy mystery series, each book is better than the last. The mystery kept me on my toes trying to figure out the culprit. There are plenty of red herrings and suspects aplenty. Each book has me feeling like I visit with friends. I get such a kick reading about Watson's antics, they are always good for a giggle. I look forward to reading more in this delightful series.
I received a copy of this book for the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.
Scornful Scones is book five in the series but you can read them as stand alone, but it's more fun in order! This way you do have a better understanding of all the characters. And man oh man is there a lot of characters! Fred (Winifred) is back to sort of dating Branson, though she still hasn't written Leo off all the way either. It looks like Katie and Leo are pretty cozy ( I couldn't help the pun) and we get to see more of Paulie and his fastidious corgis Flotsum and Jetsum. Things seem to have settled down on the murder front until Eustace Beaker chokes on a scone at Carla's debut of her new brand and son. (if you've read the others you know this is a running joke about Carla's scones being so dry you could choke on them) But Fred is unconvinced and up to her snooping.
There are many twists and turns, and its hard to guess the real killer. The story is fun to read and who doesn't like cute corgis? I also love the recipes in the back of the book!
Well this one got me! I do enjoy when I don't solve the whole thing and get a surprise.
The Gist: Scones are killing people. Accidents, surely! Fred, though, has a gut feeling. Something is hinky and she's gonna figure it out.
Fred continues to be a great heroine. She's a little difficult. Sometimes a little self absorbed. But she's got a good heart, loves books and dogs and her friends. She's dedicated and curious. I enjoy spending time with her and her friends. Her grumpy pup, too.
The mystery was well done. A few options for whodunit and kept me guessing/shifting my thoughts on that.
All in all, easy reads. Cute pups. Nice mystery and characters.
Delightful Cozy with a recipe for scones included. I am becoming extremely fond of this series based in a small mountain town in Colorado. It and it's residents keep busy dealing with murders and town politics.
I was never a huge fan of Cozy mysteries but this series has me rethinking that. Of course I’m not sure I’d enjoy all of them – just ones with an ornery Corgi named Watson. Oh, I love Fred, his owner and the person often tasked with figuring out whodunnit. She’s feisty, independent, and doesn’t take any guff from anyone. I adore her best friend Katie, baker extraordinaire. Her family are something to behold and, finally, I’m a little bit in love with her two love interests, Leo the park ranger and Branson the police detective.
The whole gang is back when misfortune befalls a local respected businessman. We met Carla, the owner of the only coffee shop in town, in several previous books. I’d thought after she had a child in the last book, whom she named Maverick Espresso, that she’d be a bit less…shrill. Nope, not a chance. She’s back in this book and still convinced that Katie has ruined her livelihood by opening a bakery above Fred’s bookshop. The problem is Katie’s baking is a million times better than Carla’s dry baked goods. Numerous times Fred has purchased a scone to support Carla and each time Watson winds up enjoying most of the dry treat. He’s the canine equivalent of a vacuum cleaner, snagging every piece of human food in sight. His expensive food? Turns his nose up at it. (Gee, I can completely relate…)
When Carla has an event after Maverick’s birth, Katie and Fred feel obliged to attend because their invitation specifically mentioned that dogs were welcome. Soon after they arrive, Fred witnesses an argument between Carla and her well-respected business man father-in-law. And although plenty of people complain about their in-laws, I have to say I didn’t like this man much. Then he dies – after eating a scone. It appears to be a cut and dried case of misadventure by scone, but Fred isn’t convinced.
Thus begins another investigation and as more people turn up dead, Fred has to sort through a huge pile of suspects as well as discover the true motive for the crimes. I admit I was surprised at the end, but that’s what a good mystery is supposed to do – surprise you.
Another nod out to narrator Angie Hickman. She’s the perfect performer for this series and her Fred hits every perfect note. She also has great voices for all the other characters and I’m thrilled to see she’s doing all the books in the series. Chaotic Corgis is already out on audio so I know what my next listen will be.
In my review of Savage Sourdough, I suggested Alicia Witt as Fred for my dream cast of the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries adaptation of this series. I would like to add Luke Macfarlane as Branson, Juan Pablo di Pace as Leo, and Kellie Martin as Katie. You're welcome, Hallmark; I'm doing all the work for you.
Okay I love scones, how could you use scones to do away with two mast characters ma’am 😒😒, granted, they had it coming, but SCONES!! Anyway, it’s scandal afoot Carla is insane and still hates Fred Nick and Ben ❤️❤️❤️ so looking forward to learning more about them. Branson is still a jerk and I still don’t like him. ❤️❤️Leo ❤️❤️ Fred is still being Fred, stubborn, ornery, Finn, trying to live the single life and sort out that 😑😑love triangle nonsense😒😒 blahhh Watson my man is just eating up all the love, sun, treats, and mysteries galore. The fact he does not like Branson and loved Leo, makes him such a good boy!!!
*Audible review* Another enjoyable installment in the Cozy Corgi series.
Along with the town of Midsomer from the TV, Estes Park is another town you don't want to visit if you was to live.
Fred and Watson are on the trail out another mysterious murder. I actually guessed this one early on, but it was still fun working my way through all the red herrings
I do enjoy these mysteries, but I'm getting fed up with the constant diet culture lines. We who are reading cozy mysteries that revolve around food don't care if the characters are watching their weight. Just let them eat and not follow it up with a comment about calories. And for goodness sake, quit contradicting yourself with "need to eat baked fish instead of pasta to make up for the pastries eaten during the day but oh afterwards we'll have two scoops of ice cream because after all there was baked fish for dinner." Just eat the pastries, pasta, and ice cream with pleasure!
Also - this was the first one I remember not having a recipe at the end, which is disappointing. Or perhaps my audiobook narrator just didn't read it this time? Sad either way.
I find this book series delightful and entertaining. The plots are filled with individuals that grow and change , and unite like a family. I would recommend that reader begin the series in order. I didn't start with the first book, but the story line was so cute, I went back and read all in the series. The stories are a comfortable and relaxing afternoons read. The star is the Corgi and from the first story forward it becomes obvious the Corgi has a mind of his own. The stories have mystery and romance, although in this story the main character is unsure of someone she has become interested with. Just when I think she's going in one direction romantically she's changed her path. There's mystery surrounding her suitors and the outcome is not decided in this story. I don't understand why her Corgi prefers one of her suitors over another. Then there's the mystery of her father's death. He was a policeman and it's beginning to look as if one of her suitors may be connected. She has a delightful business in a Tourist Community and her day to day interactions are with quirky family members and interesting townspeople all who have a story to tell. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and find them as interesting as Laura Child's series for considerably less expense.
While I was thrilled to read another adventure from the Cozy Corgi Mystery series, I was somewhat worried that my favorite pastry would be involved in a murder??? Nooo!!! When a so-called pillar of the community chokes on one of the those cardboard pre-made (who knows when) scones at the Black Bear Roaster, a day later another less than popular resident is seemingly poisoned while eating her favorite scone at the café. Fred is at the café witnessing both deaths. Once again certain members of the Estes Park police department are skeptical that Fred knew nothing about either murder. Mildred Abbott lets our heroine Fred and her sidekick Watson trust her gut feelings and never one to ignore that feeling, Fred begins to plot out who the murderer might be. It seems that no one who knew either victim was sad about their sudden deaths as they both had legions of enemies. Readers meet the elegant Athena Rose, Obituary Writer for the Chipmunk Chronicles newspaper with a secret hobby. Native American identical twins Nick and Ben Pacheco are high school students seemingly outside the city’s close community. Nick is wrongly accused of murder and Ben begs Fred to solve the mysteries since her reputation has become the talk of the town. The reader is introduced to the back stories of locals and their interactions, the powerful and the ones who abused their power and position. Estes Park is not simply the picturesque town where a herd of Elk casually walk down the street as if it were theirs. With the help of her stepfather Barry and a new friend, Fred solves the mysteries. This is a challenging read for the mystery fan, there is not a clear cut option to finding the murderer. Good news for the fussy and selective Watson he grudgingly makes a canine friend. SCORNFUL SCONES is a must read with a cup of tea and one of Katie’s tender and buttery scones.
I am really enjoying this series. Each book has a great mystery, lots of pastries and a cute corgi to boot. Very entertaining. I love the bookstore with the bakery upstairs as the main location. So yummy!
No one expected when Winifred Page and her trusted corgi Watson moved into town to open a book store, she would be followed by a rash of deaths….all murders! Fred came to Estes Park to lick her wounds, losing her publishing business and ending her marriage. Her mom lived here with her new husband and Fred needed family.
She chose a quaint shop in town to renovate while being forced to solve murders since arriving. The shop was a two-story site, and Fred needed something to see upstairs. First thinking a small gift shop….but ultimately became a bakery with smells emanating, drawing people upstairs first to have coffee, tea and the delish baked goods.
That put Fred’s and Katie’s shop a direct competition to the Back Bear Roaster, which Fred tried her hardest to continue to visit resorting to giving the terrible scones they served to Watson; who ate anything. We knew no good would come of that competition but had no idea our author had plans for us and this was #5.
Scornful Scones (Cozy Corgi Mysteries book 5) by Mildred Abbott With Fred and Watson right on the spot, a death happened in front of them at the Black Bear Roaster coffee shop. Only Fred didn’t think it was a choking accident, or even heart attack! Murder had fallen at her feet once more in Estes Park, and Fred sat down with Watson by the fire in her book shop to try and work out how the murder had been committed. When another murder happened, all Fred had was two disliked people, both on the council were dead, but how and why? She sets out to solve the murders with Watson’s help, also Sergeant Branson Wexler, from the local police force was no longer against Fred using her detecting skills to come up with ideas which had since been used to solve four murders since she’d moved to Estes Park. Winifred as she’d been named at birth, shortened to Fred, had learned from her father, a successful detective how to solve difficult cases. This is the fifth book about Fred, Watson and bff Katie who filled the bakery above the bookshop with delicious baked treats. As soon as these books are printed I will be in line to purchase the ebook! Thankyou Mildred for great books.
Great episode for Fred, Katie, Leo and Branson. Even Susan Green was understandable in her actions! While the plot centers on solving "who" murdered two of the most horrible people in town, there were reminders to us, the readers, that a person's worth is not determined by money, social standing or gossip but that each person we meet should be shown respect. Words hurt-especially young people who carry the pain like a scar. I'm enjoying this series more with each episode👍🏻👍🏻
I am completely addicted to this series! These books are like comfort food for my reading soul.
Just when life are starting to get back to normal in the tourist town of Estes Park CO, there's another death. And Fred and Watson are front and center when things turn deadly. As hard as Fred tries not to get involved, she can't seem to help herself. The author does a great job of letting you believe you know who the murderer is but throwing in enough red herrings that you just aren't quite positive.
Things keep moving on the personal front for Fred as well....you just aren't sure if they are moving forward or in circles. And I don't know if anyone else is curious where Branson keeps disappearing to, but I am!!
Pick up these books for the adorable covers, keep coming back for the mystery!
Fred does it again! This one kept me guessing a little bit trying to decide what the motivation was behind the most recent death in Estes Park. Fred kept me hopping from one theory to another as different people in town come under suspicion. I have really been enjoying Fred, Katie and Leo's friendship as Fred becomes more submerged in the town's culture. I wish I could figure out the mystery behind Branson Wexler...there's just some secret I know Fred is going to discover. Watson seems to be an excellent judge of character so I'm trusting him. I liked finding more out about Paulie and Athena too. The residents of Estes Park have a lot of character and just pull me in with all of their quirkiness and strong personalities. I'm becoming a regular cozy mystery addict. I keep needing my fix.
Another good read but again the plot left me feeling a bit so, so. It was well written, well thought out but it just didn't grab me the way the first three books did. When Carla has a party to celebrate her son's arrival, no-one expected the death of her father-in-law. Was it really a natural death or murder as she suspected? Another murder, an attempted murder and the arrest of a high school student means that she won't rest until she gets to the truth. The characters are great as always but I would really like to see the arrival of some male characters that really ignited the girls in the romance stakes.
This is such a fun series. I love the characters in this world. Fred is evolving and trying to become a better person, and I found her struggles to do so very believable. I love that the dry scones mentioned in the previous stories became something more here. While this is part of a wonderful series, I do think it would work fine as a standalone. Read them all though, to understand the relationships between the characters. There are great descriptions, quirky characters, and terrific writing. I am really enjoying the series!
Scornful scones by Mildred Abbott, is the newest in the Cozy Corgi Mysteries. This delightful read brings us up close with the merchants and shops of Estes Park. Our accidental sleuths Fred and Corgi pal Watson find themselves at ground zero in the death of a much hated, local town councilman. The Black Bear Roasters, home of the desiccated scone, is the town coffeehouse where repast can lead to repose.
I really enjoyed the perfect timing of the twists, and thought This was a well done cozy mystery. Great weekend read.
Winifred Page and her loyal sidekick Watson are once again on the track of yet another death. This time at Black Bear Roaster. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Their scones should have had a hazard warning on them anyway. But was this an accident or was it murder? I love these stories. There are always so many twists in them. Just when you think you have it sorted, something comes along to throw you off the case.
Scornful Scones is another awesome story in the Cozy Corgi series by Mildred Abbott! A fun whodunit that this go around has Fred and her four-legged sidekick Watson trying to figure out who is behind the killing at the Black Bear Roaster coffee shop. This story has some interesting, unexpected twists and turns along with the fun banter with the other Estes Park residents/ shop owners.
I love the Cozy Corgi series and can’t wait to see where Mildred Abbott takes us next!
