Let me start off by saying that I absolutely LOVED this book. Cursed is the best in the series yet. It literally had me on the edge of my seat and my stomach in knots.
The cover is stunning with an eerie vibe all at once. I don’t want to give anything away. I will say that the ring on the cover is gorgeous, but it definitely has a sinister vibe. All will be revealed by the end of the novel.
Cursed is told from 1st person with multiple POV’s. I think that style works well for this book. You get to know the characters on a more personal level.
The plot for Cursed is awesomeness. There’s plenty of action and mystery—never a dull moment. I enjoyed the different investigations that the Spirit Chasers did. The first was the Fun Frontier, which was an amusement park. Several people lost their lives there a few years back when the roller coaster flew off the rails. The park was haunted with dead ghosts as well as evil entities. The team went to scope out the scene, and let’s just say that the investigation went way south.
Casey almost lost her life when the same roller coaster from the past went rouge. I was on tenter-hooks reading that part, praying that she didn’t get hurt. The ride hadn’t been maintained in years, not to mention that the last time it was used it flew off the tracks.
One thriller scene led into another. Other team members had a fiasco at the mirror house where evil lurked within the reflection of the mirrors just waiting to suck them in like quicksand.
This book had so many interesting concepts from the Funtronics at the amusement park to the portal house on Cold Mountain. That shack had a special brand of darkness. You didn’t even have to die there to get stuck in that house. The house could just portal your soul from any part of the world to be held there as it’s hostage. Creepy to say the least.
It’s clear that the author did her research for the book and it shows. The haunted amusement park and wicked portal house was just the tip of the iceberg—leading to the underlying plot—Cursed. There’s two main curse concepts in this novel. I loved how they were different, but both worked with the story to give a variation of aspects of how one could be cursed.
I won’t spoil the climax of the curses, but lets just say one deals with hopping vampires, and the other, a sick religious cult. That brings me to the villain, Cal. That lunatic is Kilgrave’s twin. Mind manipulation is his specialty. His main goal was to have the ultimate worldwide power of control. Kat Mayor writes villains well. It was difficult being in his head. The bastard was sick. Hell, I don’t think that he cared about anyone, but himself.
The second part to the thriller ending of this novel had my heart pounding. It gave me flashbacks of the famous movie, Ghost and the ice lake in, Mountain Between Us. The ending reminded me of the movie, If I Stay. But I’m not really sure if Casey has a choice in the matter.
The author has outdone herself with this story and I normally don’t read this genre. I could go on and on about how great the plot was, but go and grab a copy for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend this book for people who love the paranormal, supernatural, and bat-shit crazy villains with a twist of romance.
I can’t wait to see what happens next. Hurry up with Demented Souls, Kat.
