Whoa! What a ride! What the hell did I just read!
The author had me at "Fuck!" and I was lost to Rae until the last page. The women in this story were not like any women I've read before. Rae and Ruby were fluid in how they presented themselves. Not feminine but not exactly butch. They sat in the middle of the spectrum which made the violence or the foul language from either of them all the more exciting and entertaining. Christina was a sweetheart with extra sweet sprinkled on top. She stood out amongst the entire Dark Angels including Rae, the woman after Christina's heart. I loved how protective Rae was even if it bordered on possessiveness at times which then would lead to an angry, violent outburst from Rae. I think that was her true feelings she had for Christina trying to gain the upper hand over her irrational and slightly paranoid mentality. Rae's outlook on life had always been negative, always looking over her shoulder, sleeping with one eye open, and when Christina, all smiles and sunshine careened into Rae's dark but ordered life, everything upended bringing chaos to Rae's mind and heart. Ruby was loads of fun and she was a great touchstone for Rae whenever Rae's head would get the better of her. It was so obvious that Ruby was in love with Rae even when she tries to brush it off. The love is clearly in her eyes and in her actions toward Rae. And Rae, well as much as she is this badass, fearless, frickin' tall, sex-on-legs, she needs to get her head out of her ass when it comes to her feelings other than anger and see what's going on right in front of her. I mean, yeah, she's someone I want backing me when shyte hits the fan, but I'd probably kill her if I was in a romantic relationship with her. Fack, she needs to grow up, just how Christina tells her. Good for Christina!
Characters aside, the story was wicked. Every chapter had action, something was always going on and I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what was going to happen next. I was heartbroken for Christina all throughout the entire story because she didn't deserve the things that happened to her, but I was relieved to know that Rae would make it better, and she did.
I look forward to reading the sequel and maybe, hopefully, Rae will have smartened up when it comes to her women.
