La scuola dal tetto di paglia

Rate this book

The Grass House is the literature that students are requested to read when they are in elementary school. The stories happened in sesame field and it took the little boy Sangsang as mainline to describe the series stories that happens in these group of people. There were delicately beautiful girl Zhi Yue full of talent; self-esteemed stubborn boy Lu He; kind, shrewd and responsible Xi Ma; Du Xiaokang who was born of fortune but still maintained dignity after experiencing great family change; Granny Qin who suffered many mishaps but was still unyielding; principal Sang Qiao who tried to cover his past and awakened to the truth after his son got seriously ill; and Jiang Yilun who was very talented but lost his lover accidentally. Everyone has separated chapters to tell, which gives readers a good understanding about any of them.

To be honest, I would be easy to have the negative attitude about books that teachers require in some way. However, the tittle of the book made me be interested about the content of the book because I did not have any idea about what “the grass house” means. In this way, got into this book with excited feelings. So, I think that is the initial attraction that brings me to the book.

Firstly, I would like talk about the characters in the book. Obviously, SangSang is the main character that goes through the entire story. Even though other characters have their own chapter to describe details, SangSang is the one who companies with them and grow a lot through these things. He appears in every chapter even make a difference to some of them lives. For example, he comes up with an idea that Zhi Yue elopes with her boyfriend and pursue her dreams. Besides, other characters represent many of readers, which means readers could be easy to find the common with these characters. They are the ordinary persons so that they are not born perfectly in the beginning even at the end of lives. However, they also have their valuable personalities that impress us. In this way, the setting of those characters could give readers’ an easier access into the book.

Secondly, I would like talk about the setting of this book. In this book, the “initial setting” of this book is sesame field. All stories happen in sesame field. The purpose of that is authors would like to show the rural lives. The school they go is called the elementary school of sesame field, the theater they usually go is named sesame field’s movie theater even the park is also called sesame field’s park. To be honest, this place is one that author would like to show the place that everyone has their personal but purest lives. However, most of them move out in the end of the book. I think it means that purest place could be hard to keep forever but the memory we have is the most valuable part of all things.

The Straw House consists of a collection of stories in the village of Youmadi. Sang Sang lives among the straw houses of Youmadi Primary School with his father, Sang Qiao, who is principal of the school. Sang Sang plays a part in each story, weaving his way in and out of the lives of others from passing notes between lovers to forging a deep connection with a cantankerous old woman, Sang Sang’s story is one of growing up a little bit more each and every day.

Little hints of the time are sprinkled throughout The Straw House, though the characters don’t outright state the date, and these subtle nods to the happenings in China during the 1960s make it all the more believable. Cao is obviously well versed in Chinese history, for every setting and ideal presented in this book is unfailingly accurate. The setting of Youmadi is detailed and authentic, a perfect window into the past. Mao’s influence on China is evident in small ways throughout the book; classifying citizens, forcefully removing people from land that was ‘not theirs,’ and the emphasis placed on order reflect clearly what events where happening at the time. Sang Sang, the plucky protagonist, is himself a creation of his time. Sang Sang is boisterous and daring, ready to take on the world, yet forced to grow up far too fast in a way which could only be cultivated by his unique surroundings. Themes throughout this novel are largely centered around growing up and taking on the responsibilities of adolescence, a relevant topic in a time where youth were expected to mature and work as fast as ever. Belonging is another theme touched upon, which resonates with any reader, for Zhi Yue, Bald Crane, and Granny Qin all represent the longing to have their own place in the world, a place where they truly belong, that most everyone can relate to.

At this time of the year, a doctor from out of town came to Youmadi. When someone told SangJoe about Sang-sang's(Sangjoe's son) illness, he came to Yaumatei Elementary School. After seeing Sang-sang's disease, he said, "I can't see this disease, but I know a man who can. He is a master in seeing this disease." So, the name and address of that master was left.
Sancho decided to take Sang-sang to try again. The place was out of the province. Father and son traveled day and night and found the place only after three days. That master was already more than eighty years old. He can no longer stand, just sitting on a chair, his head can not stabilize as if wobbling straight. He trembled and touched the lump on Sang Sang's neck and said, "It's just a rat sore."
Sang Qiao was afraid he had misheard: "You said it was a rat sore?" Rat sores." The old man gave oral instructions and had a young girl prescribe the medicine, "Take this medicine and do not stop for a day. After seven days, if the child urinates brown urine, it means that the medicine has had an effect. Take the child back."
Sang Qiao with his intuition, from the old man's poise, temperament and that calm look, determined that this time really met the master. He bowed deeply to the old man, and asked Sang-sang to bow deeply as well.
After that, for several months in a row, Sang-sang spent a lot of time in Wen Youju's "medicine lodge".
Wen Youju said to Sang-sang's parents, "I have been boiling medicine for more than ten years, and I know how to boil medicine. Let me help you watch Sang-sang drink the medicine." She went to buy another tile jar, which served as Sang-sang's medicine jar.
The small red clay stove burned almost all day.
Just before Sang-sang approached his junior high school exams, the lump on his neck miraculously disappeared. That morning, with his hand on the shotgun, Sancho pulled the trigger toward the sky. After seven shots, Sancho handed the shotgun to Sang Sang: "Seven more shots!" Sancho grabbed the glowing shotgun and, with the help of his father, pointed the muzzle high into the sky. When fourteen shots rang out, Sang Sang looked at the pale blue smoke floating up in the sky and cried out loud.
Although Sang Sang did not die, but Sang Sang felt that he had died once.

The Grass House, is a story of kids living in a rural village surrounded by rivers, birds, and nature. But even in this sweet cihldhood world which is located in a lovely rural nature, life is difficult, and children must learn this, so as the grownups. The book's main character, Sangsang, is a kid growing up in this sweet nostalgic atomosphere, watching the life, and its stories, going on. A couple of inner stories are told about people of the village, including themes of love, bankrupcy, competition and friendship. The stories are straight, easy-reading, and pleasant, highly reminding me of Hooshang Moradi Kermani's classic serries called "The Tales of Majid".
