Julian Thompson's account of WWI covers the key moments, battles, and strategic decisions within 1918 that lead to the Allies winning the war and bringing an end to the conflict.

It is a good look into the final year of the war and covers major operations via land, air and sea that were pivotal in the final push that brought Germany to its knees.

The book is excellent for its analysis of key battles and the key units and persons that were involved on both sides. Battle analysis outlines the movements of each side and the ground they managed to capture, whether it took weeks, days, months or hours.

This recount is certainly not 'all encompassing' (as the title suggests) and it doesn't seek to explore how the war started. Instead this is a more gritty account of 1918, giving reasons for how the tide began to turn on Germany and what lead to the Allies being able to push their advantage and end the conflict.

It's hard to rate something like this...I don't think it is a necessary read for history buffs who have a strong grasp of World War I but for me, someone with broad knowledge and an interest in history, this provided many new insights and I tore through the pages at a pretty good clip.

For me, 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is a must for those interested in the First World War and Military History in general. The final explosive year of the war is re-evaluated and examined in detail, battle by battle. After years of virtual stalemate and trench warfare on the Western Front, the German push of March 1918 set things in motion once again. Allied troops, augmented with Canadian and American forces, launched an agressive counter attack. This stunning hardcover edition is illustrated throughout.
