Life is unpredictable; it never goes exactly where we want it to despite how much effort we put in to shape a direction for ourselves. It's a hard lesson to learn, and one Tony Mitton captures with vivid simplicity for the potter's boy.
His name is Ryo and the story begins with him witnessing an act of heroics. Local villagers are being harassed by violent bandits. Their money and goods are stolen by such bullies; they threaten to attack and kill any who oppose them. The hero is Akio, a warrior from a hidden order of monks. However, he would deny such a title. Like the Shaolin monks of China, Akio's order practices martial arts but with the purpose of deflecting an opponent. The idea is to use his energy against him, waiting for him to strike first, then responding with the most efficient way of ensuring his defeat. Ryo is enamoured with the moves he sees and, naturally, wants the same skills for himself.
He goes on a journey of discovery and learns much about himself. Initially, he wants to become a fighter, but as the story progresses he learns how vain such a wish is. Fighting does not define the monks; it is how they use it that becomes their way of life. They train hard every day, a lifestyle Ryo adapts to, though it is only done to better oneself for defence against those that wish to exploit their fellow man. Mindfulness is the key and a heightened awareness of one's surroundings, all with the purpose of defending the weak and upholding the laws of the land. It's not mere fighting: it is a lifestyle choice.
Ryo's path appears to be laid out before him but circumstances arise to alter his destiny. Mitton's story takes on the form of a moral allegory, a vessel to show the truism he is trying to evoke here. Life does not fit a standard narrative; it can go anywhere at any time. It is beyond our control. And one need not be a hero to be a good man; he can live a simple life and still utilise the lessons of a higher order if he so chose. Using them to respond to the uncontrollable circumstances, which could arise in any battle or life itself, becomes the key.
The story has a distinctively eastern feel, though Mitton's work will appeal directly to those that enjoyed fantasy writers like Ursula K. Le Guin and historical novelists like Rosemary Sutcliff. His story is not adorned with lots of description but instead it keeps moving forward. It does not stay in one place for long and flows smoothly taking unexpected, yet realistic, directions. Like Le Guin's and Sutcliff's stories, the journey of the central character takes centre stage.
It is the peace and understanding Ryo seeks to attain that becomes the most effective element of the storytelling, a story that has a certain universal quality and appeal. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Poets penning novels should become more of a common thing. Potter's Boy was penned by prolific poet Tony Mitton and is full of the most lilting and lyrical of prose, which perfectly captures the spiritual essence of the story.
This Eastern-influenced novel is about exactly as the novel describes - Ryo, the son of a potter. When his small village is disturbed by passing bandits bent on destruction, and a cloaked stranger proves their only saviour, this sparks the first small flames of hope inside Ryo's mind. Hope that life does not have to adhere to such a predictable path as sons following fathers. Hope that his life might lead him beyond the confines of the village parameters. Hopes that he may become the master of his own destiny.
The narrator is removed from the tale. He tells Ryo's story from a distance, as well as also divulging the histories and inner-thoughts of others, and sometime addressing the reader directly. These complex narrative layers means the reader benefits from every type of narrative structure, as all are seamlessly combined here to provide a fully-rounded story. This removed perspective allows for an accurate depiction of events, without bias or acquiescence of a character's self-editing to their own story.
This is a story evoking and instructive on the spirit of mindfulness and spirituality. The timeless message, imparted in the potter's boy's story, any individual can adopt to refer to their own life path. Simplistic language in a flowery style, similar in style to the traditional moralistic fables and fairy tales, truly drives home the clear-cut messages of self-empowerment. This novel, however, manages to be instructive without the moralistic and judgemental edge featured in many earlier tales.
This is a novel of indefinable genre. This felt like a historic insight to lives of the past, an adventure quest plucked straight from the classic kingdom and high fantasy tomes, an ancient epic poem, a modern self-help guide, and a meditative and spiritual guide with added context all rolled into one neat bundle. The reader is invited to journey through all plausible genres as well as every possible emotions - both good and bad - to see the story to its end. This cleverly mirrors the cycle of life, and all life, and cleverly appeals to ever reader, and all readers, to deliver its empowering messages.
This is periodic yet timeless. Simple yet profound. One story yet about all things. Chronicles one life yet all of life. I can only liken it to Paulo Coehlo's The Alchemist, in terms of depth and subject matter, and I urge everyone to find themselves within the pages of this book. No less than 5/5 stars from me.

Potter's Boy is a coming-of-age story with lots of wisdom, life advice and the adventure you take to find your purpose in life.
Ryo is Takumi's boy, a potter who wants to teach his son the same work. But one day, when 3 men come into their village and wants to steal from honest people, a Stranger intervene and he saves the said village.
Ryo feels he wants to become like his hero and goes after him to plead for the stranger to take him.
But instead the stranger tells Ryo to spend one more year in his village, then talk to his family if he is still driven and then come to the Cold Mountain and search for an old man.
After a year and discussing with his father, he leaves for the Cold Mountain.
He finds Unzen there, an old man who teaches him the Art of martial arts and how to defend himself and his dear ones.
After the base things, he takes Ryo to a settlement on a mountain to learn more and be with more people like him and then leaves.
Ryo's new friends and his old stranger hero teach him a lot and he finds a new family within them.
Until one day when the majority + Ryo leave with a mission and a tragedy happens.
Ryo has to find a new meaning in life and to learn how to become better.
His story was a great one, but I think I had too many expectations from this story.
I was hoping for more adventure than stops. But this is just my personal preferance.
This story was sad and I almost cried twice. But at the same time I am aware that it portrays moments in our life when everything seems like it's never going to work out again. And in that moment you just have to push forward no matter whar. Of course, with patience and kindness. With calmity and conscious.
If you don't know what to do with your life or where to go next, you can read this book and you might find some answers. I know it helped me. :)

Đây là một quyển sách có sức hút vô cùng thầm lặng, lan tỏa những triết lý thanh cao và ngọt ngào. Mỗi trang sách đem đến một cảm giác thư thái, tư duy dẫu sắc bén nhưng lại tạo nên một cảm xúc tao nhã và bình dị lạ thường.
Quyển sách là một chuyến du hành tìm thầy học nghệ của Ryo - con trai nghệ nhân gốm Takumi ở ngôi làng Furukawa bên dòng Cổ Hà tại Nhật Bản xa xưa. Cuộc sống đầy nghệ thuật và yên bình đã bị xới tung bởi bọn cướp tràn đến làng. Thế nhưng một kẻ lạ mặt đã ra tay trừ gian diệt ác và người đó đã để lại ấn tượng đặc biệt với Ryo, thôi thúc cậu lên đường tầm sư học đạo. “Đạo” với cậu lúc này chính là sức mạnh của cơ bắp và thể chất, để có thể đối đầu với bất kỳ kẻ hung bạo nào. Ryo quyết tâm đi tìm vị ẩn sĩ trên núi Hàn Sơn theo lời đồn đại . Đó chính là thầy Unzen và kẻ lạ mặt mà Ryo ngưỡng mộ chính là Akio, học trò của thầy. Ryo đã được thầy thu nhận.
Những bài học mà ẩn sĩ Unzen truyền thụ cho Ryo không chỉ dừng lại ở những lý thuyết sáo rỗng mà ở sự thực hành chuyên tâm và nghiêm túc. Unzen muốn Ryo hiểu về cái tĩnh, về “không hành động” để luôn vững vàng và sẵn sàng trước mọi biến cố vì cả động lẫn tĩnh đều luôn có thời điểm thích hợp để dụng, đó là cách “làm thế nào để tĩnh khi không có gì để động.” Thầy chỉ cho Ryo tầm quan trọng của sự độc lập, cách tự chăm sóc bản thân trong sự hoà đồng với tập thể. Mục đích của việc luyện võ nghệ chính là chiến đấu, còn chiến đấu lại chính là cách để bảo vệ và giữ gìn một ai đó, một điều gì đó. Chiến đấu còn là một nghệ thuật vì khi chiến đấu cho những mục đích tốt đẹp và chính đáng cũng như cách ta nhào nặn một chiếc bình gốm vậy. Nó đòi hỏi cả sự tâm huyết lẫn sáng tạo. Ryo dẫu sao cũng chỉ là cậu thiếu niên non nớt với nhiều do dự và chưa thể có đủ kỹ năng để hoạch định cuộc đời.
Unzen dẫn dắt Ryo lên tận trại Sơn Doanh để gửi gắm cậu cho Akio, người học trò xuất sắc năm xưa. Tại đây Ryo vừa học việc vừa tu rèn chiến thuật. Sơn Doanh cũng là nơi chốn ẩn cư chứa đầy cốt lõi tinh hoa của các vị ẩn nhân. Nơi này có một nền văn hoá hình thành và phát triển ít nhất vài thập kỷ. Bài học về tốc độ, sức mạnh, sự nhạy bén đã được truyền đạt và thực hành thường xuyên. Tuy nhiên, càng học, Ryo càng nhận thấy bản thân là một hình bóng nhạt nhoà, không có cá tính nổi bật. Nhớ lời thầy Unzen rằng “người ta không thể thấy rõ chính mình như khi thấy người khác “ và nếu không khám phá được bản chất của mình thì không thể có sự tiến bộ. Ryo phải hết sức tập trung, không để tâm trí lang thang trong vô định vì sự chú tâm luôn khiến khối óc sáng suốt và trái tim bớt phiền muộn. “Với các ẩn nhân, “hoàn cảnh” có thể là một căn phòng họ vô tình bước chân vào hoặc là toàn thể vũ trụ theo phạm vi loài người hiểu biết.” Ryo đã có thời gian học tập đáng nhớ bên những người bạn như Daiki, Katsuo và Chou tại đây.
Người thầy thứ 3 của Ryo chính là Yuzuki - một nữ ẩn tu sĩ mà cậu cứu giúp trên đường chạy trốn khi triều đình đuổi giết các ẩn nhân ở Sơn Doanh. Trong mắt Ryo, Yuzuki như một vị thánh nữ, một người mẹ. Bà đã đem đến cho cậu những trải nghiệm khác lạ của việc học và hành thông qua thiền tập hay thưởng thức những thú vui tao nhã một cách có nghệ thuật nhất. Giờ phút thưởng trà cùng Yuzuki, Ryo đã bắt gặp bộ ấm trà của cha cậu chế tác. Trong những tháng ngày cậu lang bạt thì danh tiếng của cha cậu đã lan đi khắp nơi và những sản phẩm chất lượng tuyệt đẹp của ông đã đến với rất nhiều gia đình. Cậu chợt nhớ đến cha với lối sống Wabi _Sabi thanh bần, đó là cuộc sống nghèo hèn, đơn sơ mà cao quý. Chính bà Yuzuki đã giúp cậu nhận thấy “cái tinh tế bên trong tỏa sáng qua vẻ mộc mạc bên ngoài” và khi hoàn toàn tin vào hơi thở của bản thân, cảm xúc sẽ trở thành chiếc mỏ neo giữ lại những giá trị của nhận thức, bất chấp giông bão cuộc đời. Bà bảo cậu rằng “bản thân việc hình dung đã là một khởi điểm.” Việc tiếp theo của cậu chính là hành động. Cuối cùng, cậu quyết tâm trở về nhà, để được bắt đầu học nghề gốm, để gìn giữ nghề truyền thống của gia đình.
Chuyến du hành với nhiều thử thách, vất vả cùng bao trải nghiệm, và cả giờ phút vĩnh biệt thầy Unzen, người thầy đầu tiên trên đỉnh Hàn Sơn dưới bóng những con chim kền kền. Ryo đã tìm ra mục đích sau cuối của hành trình tầm đạo. Cậu đã nếm trải cả thất bại, thói bạo lực của kẻ hung ác, sự bao dung của tình bạn, sự điềm tĩnh thánh thiện của các vị tiền bối và cả sự hoài nghi về bản ngã của chính mình. Qua đó, cậu thấy được một cuộc đời tốt đẹp và những điều tiêu cực chỉ là những vật cản tạm thời, để rồi sau đó có thể tha hồ sáng tạo và chế tác cuộc đời cho đáng sống. Gia đình chính là cánh cửa vững chãi và cha mẹ chính là người thầy trọn đời. Bài thơ của Daremo đã theo chân cậu suốt hành trình:
“Sau lưng lối mòn đã đổ
Trước mặt sương trắng mịt mờ
Vững vàng con đường dưới gót
Tôi đi
Từng bước chân, từng hơi thở
Theo con đường núi vô định ngoằn ngoèo.”
Đọc “Con trai người thợ gốm “, ta thấy đâu đó hành trình tìm kiếm vận mệnh của Santiago trong “Nhà giả kim” của Paulo Coelho và cả sự thánh thiện thanh cao của Huyền Minh trong “Nhà khổ hạnh và gã lang thang” của Hermann Hesse. Lối viết của Tony Mitton hết sức tinh tế và truyền cảm, ông cũng thật khéo léo khi kết thúc quyển sách bằng những lời tâm sự của Ryo khi về già. Từng câu, từng chữ thấm nhuần tư tưởng phương đông và hơi thở nuôi dưỡng của Phật giáo. Cuộc đời và gốm sứ đều nên được chế tác trong tình yêu, sự vun đắp và sáng tạo. Dòng tâm sự của Ryo tuổi xế chiều bên dòng suối nơi rải tro cốt người thân đã trở thành dòng chảy lặng lẽ và ý nhị nhất:
“Tôi vẫn lê bước ra chốn thân quen mỗi khi tâm hồn cần được xoa dịu. Nó giống như cuộc đời, dòng suối đó, luôn nguyên vẹn, luôn đổi thay. Có thể nói là bất biến trong dòng chảy của nó. Thay đổi nơi bề mặt và theo thời tiết, nhưng bản chất vẫn là dòng suối cũ kĩ, quen thuộc ấy. Tựa thời gian biểu lộ chính mình qua con nước.”

Ryo phải hết sức tập trung, không để tâm trí lang thang trong vô định vì sự chú tâm luôn khiến khối óc sáng suốt và trái tim bớt phiền muộn. “Với các ẩn nhân, “hoàn cảnh” có thể là một căn phòng họ vô tình bước chân vào hoặc là toàn thể vũ trụ theo phạm vi loài người hiểu biết.” Ryo đã có thời gian học tập đáng nhớ bên những người bạn như Daiki, Katsuo và Chou tại đây.
Người thầy thứ 3 của Ryo chính là Yuzuki - một nữ ẩn tu sĩ mà cậu cứu giúp trên đường chạy trốn khi triều đình đuổi giết các ẩn nhân ở Sơn Doanh. Trong mắt Ryo, Yuzuki như một vị thánh nữ, một người mẹ. Bà đã đem đến cho cậu những trải nghiệm khác lạ của việc học và hành thông qua thiền tập hay thưởng thức những thú vui tao nhã một cách có nghệ thuật nhất. Giờ phút thưởng trà cùng Yuzuki, Ryo đã bắt gặp bộ ấm trà của cha cậu chế tác. Trong những tháng ngày cậu lang bạt thì danh tiếng của cha cậu đã lan đi khắp nơi và những sản phẩm chất lượng tuyệt đẹp của ông đã đến với rất nhiều gia đình. Cậu chợt nhớ đến cha với lối sống Wabi _Sabi thanh bần, đó là cuộc sống nghèo hèn, đơn sơ mà cao quý. Chính bà Yuzuki đã giúp cậu nhận thấy “cái tinh tế bên trong tỏa sáng qua vẻ mộc mạc bên ngoài” và khi hoàn toàn tin vào hơi thở của bản thân, cảm xúc sẽ trở thành chiếc mỏ neo giữ lại những giá trị của nhận thức, bất chấp giông bão cuộc đời. Bà bảo cậu rằng “bản thân việc hình dung đã là một khởi điểm.” Việc tiếp theo của cậu chính là hành động. Cuối cùng, cậu quyết tâm trở về nhà, để được bắt đầu học nghề gốm, để gìn giữ nghề truyền thống của gia đình.
Chuyến du hành với nhiều thử thách, vất vả cùng bao trải nghiệm, và cả giờ phút vĩnh biệt thầy Unzen, người thầy đầu tiên trên đỉnh Hàn Sơn dưới bóng những con chim kền kền. Ryo đã tìm ra mục đích sau cuối của hành trình tầm đạo. Cậu đã nếm trải cả thất bại, thói bạo lực của kẻ hung ác, sự bao dung của tình bạn, sự điềm tĩnh thánh thiện của các vị tiền bối và cả sự hoài nghi về bản ngã của chính mình. Qua đó, cậu thấy được một cuộc đời tốt đẹp và những điều tiêu cực chỉ là những vật cản tạm thời, để rồi sau đó có thể tha hồ sáng tạo và chế tác cuộc đời cho đáng sống. Gia đình chính là cánh cửa vững chãi và cha mẹ chính là người thầy trọn đời. Bài thơ của Daremo đã theo chân cậu suốt hành trình:
“Sau lưng lối mòn đã đổ
Trước mặt sương trắng mịt mờ
Vững vàng con đường dưới gót
Tôi đi
Từng bước chân, từng hơi thở
Theo con đường núi vô định ngoằn ngoèo.”
Đọc “Con trai người thợ gốm “, ta thấy đâu đó hành trình tìm kiếm vận mệnh của Santiago trong “Nhà giả kim” của Paulo Coelho và cả sự thánh thiện thanh cao của Huyền Minh trong “Nhà khổ hạnh và gã lang thang” của Hermann Hesse. Lối viết của Tony Mitton hết sức tinh tế và truyền cảm, ông cũng thật khéo léo khi kết thúc quyển sách bằng những lời tâm sự của Ryo khi về già. Từng câu, từng chữ thấm nhuần tư tưởng phương đông và hơi thở nuôi dưỡng của Phật giáo. Cuộc đời và gốm sứ đều nên được chế tác trong tình yêu, sự vun đắp và sáng tạo. Dòng tâm sự của Ryo tuổi xế chiều bên dòng suối nơi rải tro cốt người thân đã trở thành dòng chảy lặng lẽ và ý nhị nhất:
“Tôi vẫn lê bước ra chốn thân quen mỗi khi tâm hồn cần được xoa dịu. Nó giống như cuộc đời, dòng suối đó, luôn nguyên vẹn, luôn đổi thay. Có thể nói là bất biến trong dòng chảy của nó. Thay đổi nơi bề mặt và theo thời tiết, nhưng bản chất vẫn là dòng suối cũ kĩ, quen thuộc ấy. Tựa thời gian biểu lộ chính mình qua con nước.”

God, that was painful. I literally had to CLAW my way through. I would have DNFed if my soul had allowed it.
This is the first book in my life where I’ve SKIPPED pages. And I didn’t even feel like I missed anything important, which goes to show how much this book drones on and on and ON.
When half the story is written in the passive voice (“One must...”), it’s hard not to want to rip your eyes out first, then the pages. Just so you don’t have to look at them while you do it. Am I being dramatic? Possibly. But I can tell you an honest fact: this book gave me a headache.

Ryo is voorbestemd om pottenbakker te worden net zoals zijn vader.
Tot op een dag een Verborgene een groep rovers verslaat in zijn dorpje.
Ryo wil ook een Verborgene worden en strijden tegen het kwaad en onrecht in de wereld.
De Verborgene verteld hem op zoek te gaan naar de Kluizenaar. Deze zal hem verder helpen op zijn reis.
Dus Ryo laat zijn leven als leerling pottenbakker achter en trekt de wereld in op zoek naar zijn lot.
Maar gaat hij vinden wat hij zoekt?
Soms denk je bij een boek "ja dit is het".
Dat had ik bij dit boek. De kaft en beschrijving van het boek trokken mij enorm aan.
Helaas ben ik een beetje telleurgesteld in het verhaal.
De kaft spreekt, maar het boek bleef stil.
De tijd verliep raar naar mijn mening. Veel werd herhaald terwijl dat niet nodig was.
Soms leek het alsof de schrijver later in het boek stukjes toevoegde die eigenlijk eerder beschreven hadden moeten worden.
De personages zijn ook een beetje vlak en niet uitgewerkt.
Ik miste ook het duidelijke Japanse tintje in het boek. Het is er wel, maar een beetje op de achtergrond.
En er zit geen totaal spanning in.
Maar de reis die Ryo maakt vind ik wel mooi. De keuzes die hij moet maken in zijn jonge leven herkennen we denk ik allemaal wel.
Is het een boek voor tieners? Nee dat denk ik niet. Ik zou dit als tiener niet spannend genoeg vinden.
Maar als volwassene kan ik het wel waarderen.
Maar het boek gaat meer om de filosofie die achter deze reis zit en tijdens de reis omhoog komt.
Ik vond het wel leuk om eens een "rustig" boek te lezen dat je laat nadenken in plaats van op elke pagina actie.
Verder vond ik de schrijfstijl wel prettig!
Maar met een tikkeltje meer spanning en uitwerking had het makkelijk 5 sterren kunnen krijgen.

An unusual and intriguing quest, written in a similarly sparse style to Tonke Dragt's Letter for the King, following the journey of a young teen as they work out what matters to them and what direction they want to take in life.
At times this reminded me of Sophie's World, with its encouragement to explore different ways of thinking about one's own behaviour and values; if the reader wants to take it on board, there's a lot of philosophy/spirituality to reflect upon (Mitton acknowledges his debt to practitioners of Buddhism and Mindfulness). As an adult reader one thing I found especially striking was the number of helpful adults the young protagonist, Ryo, meets on his quest. I found this very encouraging and optimistic, and I hope that teen readers come away with a sense of reassurance and an increased confidence. It's a book, that for the right person, may be quite life changing.

This is an intriguing book that deals with the notion of following your own path. The story begins in medieval times with Ryo, the son of the local potter, who witnesses an act of aggression from thugs who terrorise and rob the local villagers. Ryo sees the hero Akio, a monk, who with seemingly little effort defeats the bandits and chases them from the town. Ryo is entranced with Akio and vows to become a warrior like him. Although his father wants him to learn his craft as a potter, his family do not stand in his way and assist Ryo to follow his path to become a fighter. On the way he learns that the path of your destiny may not be easy to follow and it can take years of mental and physical training to achieve your goal. Ryo also learns much about himself, what he really wants in life and how one can live a good life. Touching on the skills and history of martial arts and the art and culture of Japan and China Potter’s Boy has much to impart to the reader about mindfulness and the tenets of Buddhism and Zen principles. Told by Ryo as an older character, looking back on his life, the reader sees the story with the benefit of his reflection.

Một cuốn sách không chỉ nói về võ thuật mà còn ẩn chứa những triết lý nhân sinh. Sự kết hợp của "văn" và "võ" thể hiện trên cả đường đánh quyền cước của "Người Lạ Mặt". Mình thích cuốn này cũng vì những triết lý nhân sinh đó, recommend cho bạn nào thích chiêm nghiệm, ngẫm nghĩ, không phù hợp với người thích kiểu journey kì bí nha.

Kết thúc đêm Giáng sinh với quyển sách rất rất hay về những chiêm nghiệm của cuộc đời.
Câu chuyện về một người bình thường—> học cách trở thành một Ẩn Nhân, được kể lại như một bộ phim kiếm hiệp đầy màu sắc Nhật Bản và tư tưởng nhà Phật.
“ Như người ta thường nói, thiên biến vạn biến, không gì là vĩnh cửu. Thời gian cuốn trôi hết thẩy. Một lúc nào đó, bệnh tật, tuổi già và cái chết sẽ tìm đến tất cả chúng ta. Nhưng chẳng ích gì mà bi lụy hay tuyệt vọng. Điều quan trọng là sống và yêu thương, rồi nếu có thể, ở bất cứ nơi đâu, hãy thỉnh thoảng tạo ra một thứ gì tốt đẹp.
Đó có thể là một vật bạn nhìn thấy, chạm vào và cầm nắm được, như chiếc bình, tấm áo, hay bức tranh.
Đó có thể là một thứ phù du, chẳng hạn bữa ăn ngon, được tạo ra và biến đi trong phút chốc.

Tác phẩm là hành trình ra đi, kiếm tìm con đường tương lai của cậu con trai người thợ gốm, trên chặng đường đó, những sự việc, những thăng trầm, những niềm vui nỗi buồn đã tác động, biến chuyển, khiến cho cậu trai trẻ trưởng thành ra sao? Và rồi lựa chọn nào là đúng đắn nhất, phù hợp nhất?
Dõi theo chặng đường đó, người đọc dường như cũng cảm nhận và tích luỹ được cho bản thân mình nhiều điều sâu sắc.
Để đúc kết lại, thì thiệt may mắn và hạnh phúc cho bất kỳ đứa trẻ nào, trên quãng đời lớn lên của mình có được người cha vĩ đại như cha của Ryo- người thợ gốm tài hoa và thương con bằng tình yêu đúng đắn.
“Nếu con thật sự cảm thấy, từ tận sâu trong lòng, rằng điều con ước muốn là con đường đúng đắn dành cho con, thì con nhất định phải đi con đường đó. Hãy tập trung vào hiện tại, làm cho tốt và làm hết sức mình việc cần thực hiện tại khoảnh khắc này, cái khoảnh khắc đang ở đây nhưng cũng đang trôi đi nhanh chóng.
Làm sao để anh ta đi hết 1000 dặm? Đi từng bước một, vài dặm mỗi ngày.
Để đọc hết một thư viện vô số sách thì phải làm sao? Đọc lần từng câu, từng từ, từng chút.
Một con ốc sên làm cách nào bò lên đỉnh núi Phú Sĩ? Nhích từng ly từng tí, toàn ý tập trung, cùng lòng kiên nhẫn nữa.”

Dit is het verhaal over de 12 jarige Ryo, zijn vader is pottenbakker in een middeleeuws dorpje en Ryo is voorbestemd dat ook te worden. Maar Ryo is onder de indruk geraakt van een geheimzinnige Vreemdeling, die bij hem thuis een groep rovers verslaat. En dat doet hij op een aparte manier. Dat lijkt Ryo wel wat. Krijger worden …Hij besluit het aan de mysterieuze man te vragen en die geeft hem dat hij als hij echt wil moet wachten tot de tijd daar is . Hij moet in elk geval wachten tot hij 13 is… Als het eindelijk zover is , gaat Ryo op zoek naar de Kluizenaar in de Koude Bergen, zoals de Vreemdeling hem heeft opgedragen. De Kluizenaar zal hem verder helpen naar de Verborgenen, een orde die onrecht bestrijd. Gaat hem Ryo lukken een dapper Krijger te worden?
Je leert Ryo kennen als een brave jongen, die zijn vader op wil volgen maar tegelijkertijd ook het avontuur aan wil gaan. Hij is niet bang en wil er alles aan doen om een dappere Krijger te worden. Hij gaat zijn droom achterna, ook al weet hij niet wat hem allemaal te wachten staat. Je kan je goed in hem inleven, hij is makkelijk in de omgang en maak snel vrienden. Bovendien is hij erg leergierig. Hij keert dat je een dappere Krijger kan worden zonder wraak of bloedvergieten. Hoe dan, lees je in het boek.
Er komen veel verschillende personages in het verhaal voor, zoals de Kluizenaar en Chou. Met deze twee personages kan je je goed identificeren, met de andere personages heb je dat je dat minder maar dat is niet erg.
Het verhaal is een roman, het speelt zich in de Middeleeuwen af maar is zeker niet ouderwets . Er komen veel Japanse namen in voor. Ondanks dit het leest vlot, de schijfstijl van de auteur is simpel en poëtisch en hij gebruikt veel wijsheden uit het Boeddhisme en Mindfulness. Het zit vol met filosofie. Je kan het geen spannend actie boek noemen, maar er gebeurt wel veel waardoor je wil blijven doorlezen. Het is een “voor dromers en denkers”, aldus de uitgever Het eind is passend bij het verhaal, ik zag het ergens wel aankomen maar toch ben ik verrast. Wat een prachverhaal.

Like a calming, gentle breeze of morning meditation, Tony Mitton’s unique middle-grade story - Potter’s Boy – takes us on a journey of teenage discovery. Beautifully written, and with more philosophical life lessons than most MG books would be able to get away with (but done in subtle ways, so it’s not moral message-heavy), this story is about a young Japanese boy called Ryo who aches for adventure beyond his tiny, poor village.
Set in ancient Japan, Ryo’s story is one of deciding whether to follow his dreams or settle for a life being a Potter’s son with his father’s small ceramic wares business. After seeing a skilled martial arts fighter called Akio take down a group of bad brigands – and by using no weapons – Ryo decides he must become an avenger of truth and justice. So he leaves home to train as one of the legendary “Hidden Ones” – highly skilled protectors of villages who fight and deal out justice in ways Ryo could never have previously dreamt of.

Mitton cleverly writes this book in the simple, formal tone of a traditional Japanese person to really allow us, the readers, to be placed in that era and in ancient Japan. If you have never visited Japan, and are unaware of this traditional way of communicating and behaving towards one another, then you might find the book’s tone a little strange and childish...but it isn’t. It is very realistic, involving and elevates its core story into something more: a mindful look at self-discovery and how, when you get knocked down, there are always ways to pick yourself up again and keep going.

- Nửa đầu cuốn sách khá êm đêm và dịu nhẹ. Mình vừa đọc một vài tác phẩm viễn tưởng nên khi thưởng thức tác phẩm này riêng mình thấy dễ chịu vì không cần phải suy nghĩ nhiều hay quá nhiều biến chuyển. Nhưng khi dần về sau, biến cố và bi kịch ập đến, trong số đó mình có đoán được đôi phần. Tuy nhiên dù được kể lại khá đơn thuần nhưng mình cảm nhận được cảm xúc của tác giả. Phần vì câu chuyện đã qua quá lâu nên không còn quá nhiều chuyển biến tâm trạng nhưng mình vẫn ngạc nhiên nhất là bài học về cái chết của sư phụ Unzen. Với mình nỗi mất mác và chia ly khi âm dương cách biệt là một điều khó nói, hối tiếc và là một bài học sâu sắc khi tận dụng cơ hội để gặp những người thân cận khi có thể và trao lời yêu thương.

I am struggling with my review of this title, just as I am struggling with what tags to use. In some ways, Ryo's story feels like historical fiction--except for when it feels more like a fantasy. Written in a sparse but lyrical style, the story reached out to the part of me that searches for stillness and finds grounding in nature and in making music or crafts. Up until Ryo leaves the Cold Mountain to find the camp of the Hidden Ones, I was ready to give this book a rocking 5 stars. Somehow, once he leaves Unzen and joins the camp, Ryo's journey seems to lose some of its poetic feel and by the time Akio pronounced the group's departure, the characters have lost dimensionality to the point that I felt oddly detached from the tragedy that was about to befall them. Ryo's meeting wMith Yuzuki brought back some of earlier feel, but by this point, Ryo seems distant and somewhat cold--and the passive voice does not help make this any better. There are many fine moments and some passages and description that are beautifully detailed with imagery that will stick with me. I am curious to hear what my students think about this one.

Book tells about life of a potter's boy. It describes his growing progress from a child to an adult. When he is 12 years old, he admires a hero who saved all folks of his village. He follows the man and asks to learn military art from him.
He becomes a good student in training school. Although he is not excellent as his friends but he has his own clever and observation skills. These make him more special than others. One day, the leader of team asks the most skillful members to meet the king and follow the official army. Potter's boy is also chosen to join as an observant. Unluckily, all member are killed by the King because he thinks that they can be harmful for citizen in the future. After seeing all process of murder, potter's boy comes back to his old teacher and asks for advice. However, his teacher passes away due to his old age. Then the boy wonders on the street and does not know what he should do next. At that time, he feels hurt, sad, disappointed because he could not help anyone in his team. He and another girl, later becomes his wife, are the only two person survive after horrible murder. While he loses his own motivation, he meets a wise woman who has the similar style as his ex-teacher. They becomes friends and she helps him to take the balance back and find out his own passion. After a period of time living with her, he recognizes that pottering is the job most suitable with him and decides to come back home. He learns required skills from his father, gets married with the only survived girl in the team and has a happy life in his own hometown.

Young Ryo witnesses a superhero-like martial arts warrior defend his village from threatening “brigands.” He is forever changed and determined to find and join these mysterious vigilantes. He eventually achieves his goal after time spent with a hermit (actually the aging sensei, Unzen, of the warriors known as the Hidden Ones). Ryo’s time with Unzen teaches him the focus, stillness, and other necessary foundational skills he’ll need before training for eventual combat. Although the adventures and tragedies Ryo experiences are appealing, this is really a lesson about Buddhist mindfulness and meditation in middle grade novel disguise. At times, the writing is awkward and reads like an adult’s first attempt at instruction through storytelling for this age group. Not to say the lessons aren’t valuable, but readers who choose the book based on its cover (featuring fierce dragon and warrior with weapon) might be disappointed at its overall slow pace.

I think this book deserves a 2,5 but Goodreads doesn’t have any half stars so it ended up with a 3 from me :)
It’s a really straightforward book which is telling rather than showing the stort. It’s obviously made that way intentionally however, I feel very distanced from the characters and his experiences and relationships. I don’t get invested in the story.
With that said it could have gotten even fewer stars from me. So why didn’t it? It’s very similar to the book The Alchemist which allows the reader, if she/he is in the right mindset learn something new which they can apply in their everyday life. It has a lot of great life lessons. Thus, my rating of the Potter’s Boy gets a bit bumped up.

I desperately wanted to read this as I had hoped the story would be interesting and a full adventure; unfortunately, I feel it did not meet any standard of such.
I feel that Mitton needs much more practise in writing books for audiences above children.
The book lacked description to paint a picture of the surroundings and any piece of how the characters felt was told and not shown. I hope that Mitton takes time to practise his story telling in a less simplistic, passive and frankly boring way.

Câu chuyện về hành trình đi tìm ý nghĩa cuộc sống của một cậu thiếu niên con trai người thợ gốm. Cậu đã gặp gỡ những người thầy, những người bạn, cậu cũng học được nhiều triết lý trong cuộc sống, có những điều vô cùng đơn giản như lắng nghe : "thay vì lắng nghe thật kỹ, vì một mục đích nào đó, mình được mời gọi lắng nghe đơn thuần vì sự lắng nghe, chỉ để đắm chìm trong hiện tại và tận hưởng chính trải nghiệm ấy"... Truyện rất nhẹ nhàng nhưng rất sâu.

Cá nhân mình không thích cuốn này cho lắm vì nhiều triết lý dày đặc quá, mình đã mong rằng đây chỉ nên là một cuộc hành trình (và có thể nhân vật chính sẽ phát hiện ra ý nghĩa cuộc đời của mình ở cuối truyện) mà không xen vào những suy nghĩ đậm tính triết lý như thế này. Có lẽ do tác giả người Nhật nên câu chuyện này cũng phải "xôi thịt" như thế này chăng?

This book found me when I needed it. It has the tone of Siddhartha while being less preachy and boring. The language is straightforward and yet illustrative and provoking, and if the copy I was reading had been my own, half of it would’ve been highlighted for providing so much fodder reflection, comfort, and hope. It opened quietly and ended quietly, and I feel peaceful having read it.

I’ve had this book on my shelf for years and finally picked it up to read. I loved it and do believe the comparison to The Alchemist to be accurate. I will say that I also don’t think it would have wide appeal for my middle schoolers. The plot isn’t exciting overall because it is more about introspection, learning about yourself and life.

Interesting, but not my thing. It's pretty good book overall, and I wanted to explore the genre historical fiction, and I don't really think it fits me. I would recommend this book to someone who likes stories about martial arts, and learning something from the past.

Beautiful little story about mindfulness, the journey of life, and beauty in simplicity in a pre-industrial Asian setting. Loved it.
