My edition, 978-1-338-87910-0, comes—or *came*—with a charm: a sea turtle, from the shape of the protective plastic. Alas, as this is a used copy, the charm did not come with the book. I sort of dislike this gimmick in that respect, since this otherwise perfectly good and readable book is both obviously missing a part AND is unevenly shaped for bookshelves.

Younger readers won't care about that, though (other than the missing charm).

The story is a very standard rescue story featuring young adult characters, but merfolk in specific. Like similar "mermaid"* titles, the characters are pretty much treated as underwater humans: they wear clothes and have more or less human buildings and so on, but they swim instead of walk. There is also at least one major event where people are in trouble and need assistance (hence the name!), but nobody is badly hurt.

It's a pretty okay read, with a side lesson about prejudice that's a little glazed over in its setup (unless that's covered in the earlier books—I only have this one). Recommended for young mermaid fans!

*Mermales never seem to be written about, curiously, possibly because "mermaid" is as marketable as "princess" but "merbachelor" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and mermen are grown-ups. Or is it that the counterpart of mermaid is sailor...? Hmm.

{My thoughts} – Cascadia had big plans for the Sand Sculpture Festival this year. However, once a huge whirlpool had ripped through Astoria some of those plans were forced to change.

All of the members of the Royal Mermaid Rescue Crew had to be assigned jobs to clean up the town. There wasn’t anyone left to help fix the Festival. Cascadia and her sister decide to take on that quest on their own. Although as they are working on things they learn that they have some friends in some extremely unlikely places.

I recommend this book for any child that enjoys reading about mermaids and seaponys. It’s a bonus if they enjoy reading about princesses as well. This book is brilliantly written. It is a great book to show children that although they have plans that can sometimes be changed, that in the end things can and will have the ability to work out. It just may not always end up being the way in which one would originally expect.

My 2nd grade daughter and I tried to read this together. We only made it about 1/4 of the way. The world is not well thought out at all. The author seemed to forget the characters were mermaids and kept having them do things a mermaid wouldn’t do. Like climb a tree. It really bothered her how little so many aspects of the story made sense for a world underwater. I honestly think my 8 year old could write a better thought out story.

Cute read. The mid point to the end was a marked difference from the first half. The second half was far more entertaining and contained good life lessons for children. All in all a good read. My 7 year old enjoyed it.

I liked the is story as a child. I liked the other in the series more than this one though. Still a cute read for little girls who love mermaid princesses and sea animals.
