Brittney has been an avid reader since she can remember. Her parents' form of punishment for her growing up was taking away her books and making her go outside to play. She was born and raised in Southern California, with a brief hiatus in Arizona. She loves the beach, exercising, sleeping in, and cookies. She is an obsessive dog lover, although her affection currently has no outlet. Something that she is planning on remedying soon. She and her husband currently reside in the Rocky Mountains exploring and hiking as much as possible.
First of all, let me say that I love how the summary for the second book doesn't give anything away, so that if you haven't read the first book, this summary won't ruin anything for you. Plus, it enables me to do a double review, which I just love!!
When I first started Begin Again, I wasn't sure I was going to like it because I felt like I had missed a book somehow and came into the story in the very middle. It took me a little bit of time (not much) to realize this was intentional, and that the author chose to rather skillfully pepper the backstory in little by little. Once I realized that, I actually preferred it and, like I said, thought it was some pretty skillful storytelling to do it that way because the reader was able to discover things along the way as they came out.
I loved the characters! I felt immediately for Aubrey. She's been through something very traumatizing, and it was refreshing to me that it was something a little different from some of the storylines I've read in the past. She does indeed have several guys clammoring for her, and I like how she kept her options open and didn't commit to any particular person. She's trying to start her life over right now, and was smart not to jump into a relationship. So by the time she actually does pick the right one, I felt like I'd gotten to see that journey of falling for someone a lot more thoroughly. Which I loved! And let me tell you... she picked the right one.
I was actually really surprised by this choice. At first, he was the last one I would have thought of, but as things began to develop, I knew it couldn't be anyone else but him. I loved him, loved him, loved him. I loved his protective instincts, loved his sweet but sexy personality, and I thought he was the perfect match for her.
When the big reveal came around, I have to admit I was shocked. I really didn't expect the who and how that was revealed. This is unusual for me, as I'm typically able to predict pretty well, but this one took me completely by surprise. So kudos to the author on that one.
This series is just the two books, and I like how the author didn't try to drag it out beyond where it needed to go. So great characters, great storytelling and pacing, some wonderful shocks and surprises, and some good, emotional depth. I really loved this series.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I loved every moment of this book and it is such a fast read. Aubrey is very courageous and in some ways she's a typical teen but in others she's very mature. What I love most about her is that she is able to analyze her feelings and reach out to others and make a difference and she's able to forgive so easily and learn from mistakes. I wish I would've learned what Luke's issues were but in the end they don't really matter. This book explores the darker side of some people and yet how even in the worst circumstances people can triumph. My motto in life is that life is about choices and this book is chock-full of them. The book repeats over and over again that everything in life happens for reason and I fully believe that and love how the book explores this.
"I'm so sorry, Mike. Everything you said earlier was true. You've been an amazing friend to me since I got here. You've been so supportive, and I've done nothing to deserve you." I wanted to continue, but when he made eye contact, I stopped in my tracks. "You still don't get it. I can't be your friend anymore." I froze at his words. The crack he'd put in my heart this morning was spreading, threatening to break me in half. "Mike…" "No, let me finish. I've tried over and over again, but you don't see me. I took you out and told you things I've never even told my best friends, and what do you do? You go out with Luke the very same weekend. I opened up to you, and you go off and become best friends with the one guy I warned you to stay away from. I'm never going to be enough for you, and I'm done trying. Everyone else sees how I feel about you. Everyone except for you. I'm done looking like a fool while you go out with every other guy but me." I was shaking by the time he finished. He was right. I had dated Luke instead of him. I had grown closer to Gage instead of him. I'd chosen Tucker over him, twice. I didn't deserve him. I didn't even deserve to know him. The pain in my chest was spreading as my eyes filled with tears that threated to spill over. I stayed rooted where I was, despite everything in me screaming to reach out for him. "I am truly sorry, Mike. You've been so amazing to me, and I've done nothing to deserve you. I can't change what I've done, but I can't stand to lose you." As those words left my mouth, I felt how true they were. He was my rock. He had been there for me through this whole mess. I looked up at him through the tears and didn't bother brushing away the ones that had broken free. "I need you, Mike." He closed his eyes for a moment, and when they opened, he looked down at me. One step toward me was all I needed to throw my arms open and wrap them around him. I was openly crying now and made no moves to cover it up. I was broken, and he knew what to do to fix me. Slowly, he pulled me against him, holding me tight. "I need you too, but I can't stand back and watch you with other guys. I don't want to give you an ultimatum, but I need to know that you choose me. I don't want to just be your friend anymore. I want you to be mine, just mine."
I liked this book more than the first one and at the same time had more problems with it. Live Again picks up with a combination of where Begin Again left off and with back story. It tied in Aubrey's original trauma with the new stalking. Nicely done.
Aubrey is a likable lead female. She's understanding, forgiving, and accepting. Too bad her friends don't share more of her qualities. Between Mike's ultimatums and her girlfriends turning against her without ever hearing her side of anything, who needs an enemy! The stalker was more consistent. I was really disappointed with everyone's behaviors in the book except for Gage, Brandon, Liv, and Carter. They proved their worth. Mckayla especially didn't deserve immediate forgiveness. High school jock over your cousin. NO! Her emotional depth is nonexistent.
Positives: The stalking added an element of suspense. Aubrey's dance storyline was very good. Conversations with Gage were excellent. Brandon and Carter were pretty perfect.
Negatives: Mike, Mckayla, Alexis, Talia. I figured out who the stalker was, but didn't guess the motive.
All in all, this was an entertaining read. I look forward to more of Aubrey and her true love.
I did not read the first book in this series. Let me start with that. I was completely lost and confused for the first few chapters because of this. I ended up really enjoying the story and I really liked the writing style. I felt it was reflective of a high school girls mind, how she would think and what she would say. I will read other books by this author. I received this copy for free in exchange for an honest review. I do not want to post any spoilers
Live Again picks up Aubrey Tate’s story shortly after Begin Again ends. After the terrible fright she had on the night of the winter formal, Aubrey’s life has continued on with increased protection and supervision from her friends and family. Mike is spending a good deal of time worrying about her, as is Carter, while Luke has run a million miles. Aubrey is hurt by Luke’s withdrawal, confused by Carter’s behaviour and overwhelmed with Mike’s constant presence and assertion that she is now his. She is still spending time with Gage, and she even has an evening or two with Tucker, who’s mostly a jerk. Aubrey must deal with her boy issues, and face that she now has a new stalker that wants to hurt her. She is also coping with increased frequency and intensity of dance practices as she will be representing the Dance Academy in competition soon.
Just like the first book in the series, Live Again is well written, detailed and engaging. There is plenty of drama, especially of the boy kind, and some mystery too. It was tantalising wondering who the stalker was, but I was kept guessing right to the end. The ending was much more satisfying than in the first book, this one wrapped up nicely, resolving everything. I thought it was unnecessary to have this story across two books, when it could have easily been one longer book. I was glad that I had Live Again to start reading straight away, otherwise I would have been frustrated at the end of Begin Again, waiting to find out what happens.
I liked the majority of the characters, and thought they were easy to relate to. Through the story the reader gets to know Aubrey quite well, as she is the antagonist of the story, but we learn a little about many of the other characters as well. I liked Aubrey and McKayla, they were pretty decent kids despite their privileged upbringing. I also liked Brandon and Carter, trying to act like responsible adults to protect Aubrey, yet not long out of their teens themselves, and prone to silliness, such as eating competitions. Talia and Alexis sort of blurred together for me, as they were so similar. So did their boyfriends. That didn’t detract from the story, I just had a much better sense of McKayla and Mike. I had mixed feelings about Mike, since he seemed a bit controlling to me, but he played an important role in Aubrey’s life and in the story. One character that I really did want to know more about was Gage, he was rather enigmatic!
As in Begin Again, a few things seemed odd to me, though I have put that down to never having been a rich, beautiful teenager in California! Money, cars, shopping… And a group of teenagers travelling to an island by themselves for the weekend, and all the parents being okay with this? Not to mention Brandon agreeing for Aubrey to go while her stalker is still out there. Yeah, that seems like more freedom than the average teenager might have, but still, it was a nice way to give Aubrey time to get to know some of the other students.
I enjoyed reading this teen drama. Live Again is suitable for middle to upper high school students, and should be read directly after the first book in the series, Begin Again. A third book in this series is due out later this year. I will be looking forward to seeing what trouble Aubrey find herself in next.
*I received this book as a digital copy from the author, who asked me for an honest review of this book. I did not receive any other remuneration, and the review is composed entirely of my own opinions.
Thank you to Brittney for sending me a copy of this book for review, I read Begin Again, the first book in this series, last week and I couldn't wait to start this one. This is the second book in the Begin Again series and I would definitely recommend reading the first book before this one. I think it is one of those series that you really need to understand and I don't think you would connect with Aubrey and her story as much from reading this book alone.
I read Live Again much earlier than planned because I needed to get back and see what Aubrey was up to and how her life was playing out from the last book. I loved that it started pretty much exactly where it left off, this meant we didn't miss anything that had gone on. I loved every minute of this book and got it read in a day because I couldn't put it down.
I loved Aubrey before reading this book but she proved just how brave, strong and mature she is in this novel which made me love her more. I spent the whole book wishing for her to find happiness whilst also being terrified for her. There was a guy I was rooting for in book one and I am so happy he was the one she chose in the end! You will have to read the book to find out who though!
There were more twists than that last book had which made this book so good and the way Brittney writes makes it so addictive so you are hooked from the start. Brittney hasn't just written a story, she has written a novel with morals and lessons for life. She makes you believe everything happens for a reason no matter how terrible that is and proves it to us. She has written a beautiful, easy to read, captivating novel that you don't want to end. I was so excited when I saw that there would be another book in this series because I need to know if Aubrey can now get her happily ever after!
This is the perfect YA novel packed with romance and humour, whilst also exploring the darker side of people and relationships, there are also some terrifying moments that make you heart jump from your chest. I can't recommend this series highly enough!
