Bunheads meets The Kicks in this second novel in a brand-new middle grade trilogy from New York Times bestselling author, dancer, model, and actress Maddie Ziegler!
After a successful first competition, twelve-year-old Harper is eager to keep on making her mark in Dance Starz, But lately, she’s having a bit of “dancer’s block,” In her one-on-one with her teacher, Harper is reminded that dancing isn’t just about the spins and leaps; it’s about the emotion and passion for dancing, too. And lately, she hasn’t felt that Harper has been living up to her usual standards. Vanessa will be choosing the first soloist to compete at the next competition for the team, and suggests to Harper that she find a way to figure out how to get that mojo back.
Thanks to a chance conversation, Harper joins the school musical. Not only is this an opportunity to polish up her stage presence, but as the newbie at school, Harper is excited to make some more friends.
But some of the teammates are not thrilled that Harper has to do something else other than dance team. Plus, their biggest rivals, The Belles, are looking to go toe-to-toe with them in the upcoming competition—and both teams have something to prove. Harper realizes that the musical, dance team, and school might be a little much. Can she figure out how to find her balance—on-stage and off?
Madison Nicole Ziegler, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 30, 2002, is a professional dancer and actress. She was one of the stars of Lifetime’s Dance Moms for six seasons, and was the lead dancer in Sia’s critically acclaimed music videos “Chandelier,” “Elastic Heart,” and “Big Girls Cry.” Maddie is a judge on So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation and stars in the film The Book of Henry.
This trilogy gives the reader a front row seat in a dance studio plus we get a glimpse into being part of a school play as well. Harper gets the opportunity to be a part of the school production of "The Little Mermaid". Doing so stretches her skills as a dancer and shows her the ups and downs of being part of a theatrical production. We see her learn about being a good friend, teammate and sister. There are some silly and heartwarming moments with her sister, Hailey, that were some of my favorite moments in the book. Perfect for girly girls!
this book was really funny, had 12- year old drama, and stressful news in dance class!!! this book is about a 12- year old girl named Harper McCoy. she is on the select team for dance, but she was selected to be on her school play!! Will Harper be able to do the play and try to get the solo?? Read to find out!! 💃💃
Have you just had too much on your plate and you have overextended yourself? Along with school you have so many things going on after school and you are just worn out? This is exactly what Harper has done. She is still fairly new to Florida and her dance academy, Dance Starz, and still trying to make sure that she is meant to be on the competitive team. Her team consist of Megan, Lily, Trina, Riley, and Harper. They work together as a team, however, they are now about to compete against each other for the Dance Starz first ever solo on the competitive team. Megan is determine to make sure that the solo is hers and she will do whatever it takes to make it happen, even if it means lying and sabotaging her teammates. Not only does Harper have the stress of working on the solo and the competitive dance, she unintentionally finds herself in the school play. Harper accidentally falls asleep in English class because she is so stressed, when she explains to her teacher that is is because of her dance, her teachers puts her in the school play of The Little Mermaid to fill the gap of the only solo dance number. Harper does not need to add one more thing to her plate but as she begins going to practice she really enjoys making new friends. Will Harper adding so much more to her plate and making new friends hurt her relationship with her best friend, Lily? Will the school play take her focus off of her goal to nail the solo at Dance Starz? Will Megan get her way and force herself into the first solo? Don't miss this fun book written by Maddie Ziegler, one of the stars on Lifetime's Dance Moms and a judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
This book focuses mainly on dance but it is not all about dance. The Audition and The Callback also deal with middle school drama such as friends, family, crushes, and mean girls. I cannot wait for the third book in this series to come out!! Don't miss these!! Follow me:
this book is about a girl who did not believe in her self and then she found out that she could do what ever she put her mind to and so she had passed in the championship and she won first place and all of her best friends came and cheered her on so she could do a grate job and she did because she won.
This book has amazing characters and an awesome storyline. This is one of my favourite books I've ever read. I love the different problems and personalities the different characters have. I would definitely recommend this book.
Now 13, Harper wants to continue to push herself at DanceStarz after a successful first competition. The problem is, she has been feeling symptoms of ‘Dancers block’! until she suddenly receives a role in her school musical!
Harper is excited to make some new friends as she is the new kid at school. She also really wants a big solo so that she can prove to everyone that she can handle the pressure of being under the spotlight.
BUT….the girls on her dance competition squad don’t exactly welcome the idea of Harper committing to the school musical because it is so close to the team’s next dance competition. Making it even more stressful is the fact that their big-time rivals, The Bella’s are also competing against them with Energii by their side.
But the big question is, will Harper be able to handle all of the pressure onstage and off?

Where is the story mainly set?
Most of the action occurs at Dance Starz dance studios. For example: in the Lobby, Studio C, Studio A Warm-up/Dressing Rooms. some drama goes on at Lily Hu’s parent’s Shop: Sugarplums, at school at her friend’s houses, and on the site of their big competition!
What I liked most about The Callback?
In this book, Maddie Ziegler adds more backstory to each of the characters which allow the reader to get to know them even better. I mostly liked the fact that she included more aspects of the main character Harper’s life than in the first book. For example, we learn more about her school and that her school produces musical theatre performances and that she was going to be included in it even though she was a new student at that school.
As an avid reader, I find that in most books, the author rarely writes about the everyday details of a character that might seem mundane and boring to some, but that I as a growing tween find fascinating as you get to learn about how other people your age and older live! You get to read about how they deal with and solve their daily problems!
What I liked least about The Callback ?
There was almost nothing that I did not like about this book (see the next point for what I thought could make it better!). However, I didn’t like that I got in trouble for reading it when I wasn’t supposed to be asleep LOL, so I have no doubt whatsoever that if you are a dancer like me then you will like this book.
What I think could make this book even better
I just really wish that instead of showing her training clothes on the front cover she was in her dance solo costume (not the musical solo costume) – that would have given this book a 5-star rating instead of a 4.5 in my opinion.
My Rating of this book out of five stars!
I rate this book 4.5 stars because in my opinion, this book was even better than the first in this series as there was more depth to each character’s personality as well as why they act as they do and I felt she had more experience and maturity as a writer.

do not piss me off. this book actually makes me mad. like i’m literally angered by the ink on the pages. trees died for this. somewhere in the world an ecosystem and a family lost a source of oxygen because of this. the way this scrap of paper managed to infuriate me every time i turned is actually unfathomable. whoever let this pass in publishing had ought to be in it for the money because there were so many errors.
⤷ 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙩. it’s just megan throwing tantrums because she can’t get what she wants and harper being a suck up with her lack of communication. i do not care if harper is twelve. even my twelve year old self would be able to string a sentence together to let my teacher know that i had other things coming up and would not be able to attend rehearsals or what not because of it. how is harper going to tell vanessa she may struggle with timing because of a musical she ended up joining weeks ago? that’s stupid. vanessa should’ve clocked her tea because if a student randomly told me they were in a musical they joined decades ago i would’ve been infuriated due to their lack of responsibility and communication.
but what baffles me more is that when it’s time for harper to audition for her solo, vanessa puts her up first despite knowing she had a musical matinee??? who in their right mind would purposely make someone who is under a time crunch go first? it’s actually appalling how so many things in this book are nonsensical because realistically vanessa would’ve made accommodations to put harper last so she would be able to have enough time to get ready. this is insane.
.𖥔 ݁ ˖╭ ┆megan ╰⊹ ࣪ i do not care if she faces external pressures from her mother to be the best out of the best. just because you are stressing does not mean you get to be a literal bitch to other people. i get stressed too, and sure, you can get into arguments because of it. but you certainly do not start sabotaging people over it?? how is she allowed to be on a team when she shows no support in her teammates or sportsmanship?? how are you gonna ridicule the bells in the previous book for their lack of when megan is just the same??? kick the girl out.
⤷ 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙤𝙢 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚. waste of time. only redeeming factor is that megan was written in a way that i actually got annoyed every time i saw her name on the page.

There are a lot of typos but the plot was really interesting. Megan was really mean it would be nice to see more character development by the end of the series.
page 11 a part is repeated in a slightly different way
"Gee, thanks, Naima, for your support. But I'm not flunking English," I said, aggressively stirring my yogurt so hard it spilled over the edges. "And I'm not giving up my spot." "Yeah, nobody's taking Harper's spot," Lily declared. "Harper is one of the best dancers in the whole studio." "I'm not flunking English," I said, slimming my yogurt down on the table. "And I'm not giving up my spot." "Yeah, nobody's taking Harper's spot," Lily said. "Harper is one of the best dancers in the whole studio."
a typo on page 18
"Harper had her face pressed up to the window, making fish faces at me, and I was in such a good mood I squished my lips into a fish face back at her."
should have said
"Hailey had her face pressed up to the window, making fish faces at me, and I was in such a good mood I squished my lips into a fish face back at her."
since the book is written in Harper's point of view it was Hailey who was making fish faces at her.
page 49 a part is repeated in a slightly different way Lily looked at me and smiled. "And you'll be great at the musical. Don't be nervous!" "You'll be great," she said. "Don't be nervous."
typo on page 158 "But it was her next that episode threw me off." it should say But it was her next episode that threw me off.
Typo on page 187 Trina is listed twice "Lily, Trina," she said. "Looks like those fit perfectly. You may take them off. Trina, looks like you have a little issue with the jacket fit...."
should say "Lily, Riley,...."
Typo page 195 into instead of in to
typo on page 199 "one of the high school helpers offered to help me helped me put on stage makeup..."
should say "one of the high school helpers offered to help me put on stage makeup..."
typo page 226 there is dialogue that shouldn't be there "Trina!" Vanessa came out and called Trina next. "Break a leg!" I whispered to her"
Lily is on stage next page 226 then Riley goes on stage after Lily page 228 Trina goes on stage after Riley page 229

The only reason why I am reading this series and am planning on finishing it is because I LOVE Dance Moms. Since Maddie was such an amazing dancer on the show I thought her books would be amazing too. For a young author like Maddie her books are quite impressive and so far are quite good. (I wouldn't have read the second book if the first one was bad, so that just shows how good of a writer she is considering how picky I am with books :)
I liked how dedicated Harper was to Dance. (just like Maddie was) Harper was dealing with quite the intense schedule, but also managed to spend time with her sister Hailey and also dance in the schools play.
So far the series has been good and I am ready to start the 3rd book.
The only thing is I felt that this book same with the first one was young for me. I would recommend this to 3rd-5th graders. Not for someone who is older. It's definitely not a good book for my age but I wanted to see what Maddie's books would be like.
Have you just had too much on your plate and you have overextended yourself? Along with school you have so many things going on after school and you are just worn out? I'd give this book 4 stars. It's a great book, and I can't wait for the next one. I loved everything about it, and I definitely recommend it! The only reason I give it 4 stars is because at several times, the words repeated. For example, Harper's mom would say something, Harper would respond, and then her mom would basically repeat the same thing again. But I love the whole book, and Hailey on the Daily was hilarious! It was such a great read!
"This book is about a girl named Harper that got a idea from her English teacher - to perform in a show "Little Mermaid". Harper very quickly said yes, because she would dance a solo. Harper has also very much chores that she forgets do when she goes to train the dance. She is also in a dance ballet team and there will be in 1 week who will have a solo. Harper is very excited. This book was and is very interesting for girls who like to dance and like music." - Zuzia N., 5A
The story itself was alright. It was an easy read, but there was a lot of repetition in the sentences, which is something I don't like when writers do. Quite a couple mix ups in some spots with characters names being repeated, when intentionally it was supposed to be another character. I can definitely say I liked the first book a lot more than the second.
This book was so interesting since I’m a dancer, I can relate to Harper and feel what she is feeling. Maddie Ziegler did a great job on this book, it reminds me of what it felt like when I first moved state and joined a new dance group. I love this book and I want to thank my mother for buying me this book. I really enjoyed it
alright- this was a good book but I felt the wording and layout of events wasn't great. don't get me wrong I love Maddie I've been watching dance moms ever since the first season but this book had quite a few grammatical errors. but overall it was ok.
I am mainly reading this book because I love dance moms. It is pretty obvious that these are aimed more towards a younger audience for sure. However it is a quick, cute read.
i wish i was born in 2002 so i could be on dance moms i want to dance just like maddie and i wish abby lee could teach me that would be a dream come true
