When a leading Malmö entrepreneur turns up bound and gagged in a city-centre cemetery, the Skåne County Police have no obvious clues as to who is behind the kidnap. More complications arise when a second leading business figure is snatched and Inspector Anita Sundström and her colleagues are under pressure not only to find the victim, but also catch the gang.

The team is then further stretched with the murder of a malicious investigative journalist who has ruined the lives of many prominent Swedes. Unlike the kidnap case, there is no shortage of suspects. Both investigations are far from straightforward, and Anita’s professional life is about to become more turbulent with her nemesis, Alice Zetterberg, waiting in the wings.

Warring companies... fallen celebrities... and an adversary from a past case reappears on the scene as Anita Sundström tries to find the truth in the sixth full-length Malmö Mystery.

A new Anita Sundström case is always a welcome purchase and a joy to read. Anita’s team are all back and even a few old enemies return to make life difficult for Anita as she juggles multiple kidnappings and murder within the cutthroat business of corporate Sweden and uncovers the truth about the legacies of Finnish evacuees during WWII. Superbly plotted and well researched (as always) with multiple crimes the list of suspects is long as Anita skilfully narrows it down to find her culprit. A brilliant series with still no weak books within its run. Recommended.

Anita Sundström of the Skane County Police is feeling more than a little stressed out as the novel starts out. Her English boyfriend, Kevin, has been staying at her apartment for two months now and he is getting underfoot. Not that Anita's not partly glad he is there. But she has gotten used to living alone. Also, her boss is on her case and Hakim, her formerly best officer has gone cold on her.

A man is kidnapped, but is returned relatively unharmed after paying a huge ransom. He is a very wealthy businessman. When it happens again, the police are flummoxed and more than a little harried trying to sort out who is doing the kidnappings.

When Anita's boss, Moberg, has a heart attack, she is put in charge of the team. Just then, a murder occurs. The man is discovered to have several fake identities. One of the team members knows who the victim is, however. He turns out to be s sleazy reporter for a semi-sleazy tabloid. He made many enemies with his muckraking journalism tactics. The list of suspects is long – and famous.

And in steps Alice Zetterberg, Anita's long-standing nemesis. Things really are going from bad to worse.

Through dogged determination and sheer hard police work, the team cracks the cases. A surprise suspect in the murder case who is tied to a very old case of murder.

This book is well written and plotted in Torquil MacLeod's usual style. I must admit that I didn't enjoy this book in the series as much as the previous books. It was very slow to get going and it seemed like there was a lot of dithering going on. I will continue to read the adventures of Anita Sundström, however, for they are really good books.

MALICE IN MALMO is the sixth Inspector Anita Sundstrom mystery by Torquil MacLeod.
The ‘Malmo Mysteries’ include MEET ME IN MALMO; MURDER IN MALMO; MISSING IN MALMO; MIDNIGHT IN MALMO and MENACE IN MALMO.
The mysteries do take place in Malmo, Sweden and feature Inspector Anita Sundstrom of the local police force. Characters include fellow police officers; Anita’s family and long-distance romantic interest, Detective Sargeant Kevin Ash of the Cumbria Constabulary in northwest England. Plus a whole range of not-very-nice criminals.
Mr. MacLeod is a writer living in Cumbria and became acquainted with the Malmo area when a family member moved there. The sense of place, the Swedish locales are very interesting and well-written.
The characters are realistic and likeable.
There are interesting notes on Finnish wartime refugees in Sweden during WW II. Evidently, over 70,000 Finnish children were evacuated in the face of Soviet attacks. The book’s prologue opens with one of these childrens’ experiences.
The series is an E-Book series.
Detailed plots with a lot of tension; interesting, intelligent characters; a great sense of place; terrific maps (I love maps!); good policing - all make for an enjoyable read.

A jogger finds a man ‘completely trussed up’ with a hood over his head on a bench in a local cemetery. A kidnapping victim who is very rich, very successful. Will there be more victims?

I am not a good/thorough reviewer and just pass along my overall impressions. Others do that well.
I have read this series in order so far. I found this #6 to be the least engaging of all. Actually, it was tedious many times. And after so many, the police procedural elements start to seem too repetitive and common. That's probably why it seemed tedious. The crime/plot/solutions were ok, but just that. Not remarkable. I think MacLeod needs to find a way to add some zing elements to kick the action up a bit. The word "blasé" comes to mind. If you are reading the series, you won't feel or find anything new here, IMO. If this is your first it will be pretty good and able to stand alone as he does not dwell on a lot of backstories even though the key characters have been in place all along. It didn't help that we had guests for an extended stay that prevented me from my normal reading routines. 😄 So it took forever to finish.

I don't know if I like Torquil MacLeod that much anymore because I am so enamored with Anita Sundström I can't seem to think of another author whom I like. He really makes you think when each and every crime is committed you use Anita to run all the ideas by, but they may not be right on. She's handicapped by Zetterberg coming and making everything difficult. Hakim was quite distant because he had to overcome Liv's injuries from Anita's prior case. And Brodd's saving Anita by squealing on what Anita was up to. It happens to make all the other books seem to make sense. I want another book to read right now is how I feel Torquil MacLeod.

Anita is struggling in her relationship with Kevin who remains suspended from his post in England. There are problems at the Polishus when Chief Inspector Moberg falls ill. Then there are the kidnaps and a murder. Anita struggles to find the answerers.

A good competent novel in this self-published series all set in Malmo. An agreeable easy read will continue onto the next instalment.

Malice in Malmo is the epitome of a mixed bag - some excellent, engaging parts, some atrocious, implausible parts! The major flaw with this series was the attempted introduction of a new antagonist. Normally, this is welcomed and needed, as it adds to the drama, conflict and angst of the protagonist. And while I am not saying that Mr. MacLeod doesn't succeed in some ways to these goals, it is the manner in which it is accomplished that is so problematic.
If you've read the previous entry in this series you will know that the Zetterberg character was introduced for this very purpose. In that story, she is often found making errors, and officious accusations at Anita Sundstrom, to which Anita's responses are generally rather weak and out of character, especially since she is an otherwise brilliant and confident woman!
But the real issue is that Zetterberg totally screws up her investigation at the end of the previous book, causing great embarrassment and consternation to the Police Commissioner, yet somehow in this book, she is rewarded with taking over an investigation started by Anita - ludicrous and totally asinine! The problem here is that this is nothing more than a contrived way of reintroducing Zetterberg as Anita's foil, when it literally made no sense. Even something as simple as Zetterberg having a personal connection to the Commissioner would have made it more palatable.
As a result, the ongoing feud between them was not in any way dramatic or intriguing, but rather annoying and unbelievable. As in the first book of the series where Mr. MacLeod made a massive error totally changing the demeanor of one of the main characters to add "drama", these type of errors need to be avoided as they add nothing to the machinations of the story.
P.S. I just found out in a Kindle search of subsequent books that not only is Anita not rewarded again after basically solving this case, but that Zetterberg, who screwed up again in this book, is ultimately rewarded by becoming Chief Inspector! I'm done with this series!!

Another really good read from Torquil MacLeod. I have read all the books in the series, and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. The characters have been beautifully developed, the plots are excellent with many unexpected twists, and the whole series is a pleasure to read. I really hope that the series continues, and I can't wait for the next episode.
This one, Murder in Malmö, is possibly the best yet. The characters included several non-Swedish individuals and thus better reflects the current situation in Skåne. Very difficult for me to discover 'whodunnit' until very late in the book, but the interplay between the characters kept my interest right up to the end. Strongly recommended.

better but…

I read these novels because the plots are interesting and the descriptions of Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries is also good. But I really don’t like the main character. The author insists she’s beautiful but she doesn’t seem it. So dull, no interest in anything~~ reading, art, music, movies, tv, sports~~ no passion except police work. Okay, but she’s not that good at it. I always figure things out way before she does. I’ll keep reading and see if she develops.

The pair of crimes; a kidnapping of a rich businessman and the murder of an investigative journalist were quite compelling and kept me guessing. The continuing appearance of Zetterberg is just getting tiring. Feeling like a soap opera sometimes. Otherwise a pretty good read

MacLeod's Malmo series, 'starring' inspector Sundstrom, is a decent procedural one that gets a bit tedious at times but generally delivers. "Malice in Malmo" is a good example of what I've experienced in making my way through the catalog: competent writing, slow pacing, uneven performance by the characters, and a satisfying conclusion.

Anita Sundstrom is an interesting protagonist. She's an older (she has a grandchild!) detective in the Malmo force, often at odds with her superiors as well as her peers, but highly competent and goal oriented. As with many characters in this genre, she suffers by comparison to the giants (Rebus, Bosch, etc.) but still has enough challenges in her life to make things interesting. In Malice in Malmo, she's involved in 2 disparate investigations that may or may nor be related. The first is the kidnapping of a local high level businessman that turns into a series of similar crimes, the 2nd the murder of an investigative journalist. Anita's role changes from investigator to boss, as her superior experiences a heart attack and she's put in charge, but reverts when her nemesis, Alice Zetterberg, is replaces her. Eventually, Anita and team discover connections among the business people who'd been kidnapped which led to not only the ultimate solution of that series of crimes but also to the identification of the murderer of the journalist.

Malice in Malmo moved rather slowly and not much progress was made for most of the narrative, but Sundstrom's personal issues and relationships kept things interesting. The police work seemed a little unfocused and I'm not sure the case(s) would have been solved without the mistakes made by the bad guys. All-in-all, a decent, unexciting read.

Multiple crimes are woven into one story

As Anita and Moberg interview the victim of a kidnapping a body is discovered in an apartment in Malmö.

Before they can get on with the two investigations Moberg has a massive heart attack and Anita is given temporary charge of the team. With chaos in the department following another kidnapping, and difficulty finding out the real name of the murdered man who has multiple passports, Alice Zetterberg makes her move and is made Acting Chief Inspector. Her, unfounded, animosity to Anita rears its head as she makes it clear that she's out to have Anita dismissed from the force.

Zetterberg sets Brodd up as a spy to try and keep tabs on Anita and meanwhile upsets the team by belittling them and dismissing any theories they come up with preferring instead to focus on her own pet theory.. which is completely wrong as usual.

Anita won't be stopped from her own investigation and, having finally made peace with Hakim, ropes in Liv to do some research and encourages Klara to think for herself and speak up, they will resolve the cases despite Alice Zetterberg.

No, no, no. Not again.

I've loved this series, good whodunits, good characters, great relationships - even with the typical issue of women shouldn't be cops found in many of the Nordic noir series along side this and the on-going immigrant issues of the period.

Strong headed female detective determined to keep pecking away until she finds the truth.

However, this is the second book in a row where the author thought this wasn't enough, but brought in one of the dumbest, most vindictive, egotistical characters bound and determined to ruin our hero Anita over something that didn't happen years ago.

Now, I've cheated and looked at the preview for the next book in the series and see it has this same person doing her best to get back at our hero - again. My apologies to the author, but for this reader it's stupid and unnecessary AND detracts from what are good whodunits. So I'm skipping #7 and moving on to #8 where it appears things may have changed.

I know I'll missing something of importance in the story line, but will make do.

Anita Sundström’s team is stretched to the limit investigating a series of kidnappings and the murder of a brutally destructive journalist. Then Anita’s boss has a heart attack and she is temporarily put in charge. That is, until the author decides to bring back the ultimate malicious character, Alice Zetterberg, who has known and hated Anita since police academy days. In fact, her hatred is so far over the line into insanity that it is impossible to believe that Zetterberg is still on the police force. I suppose this device was easy for the author but it set up a lot of scenes that make for miserable reading. Anita is a terrific character and deserves more originality on the part of her author.

A good enough read, but the series is now beginning to lose my interest. I am finding the characters becoming more cliched and the twin seemingly unrelated plot strands with their late conflation predictable. Anita’s singleminded determination to defy orders and put herself and others in mortal danger seems foolhardy rather than heroic. However. I admire very much the author’s ability to embed his story into urban, rural and international environments with the confidence and, where my own experience has allowed me to check it out, attention to detail of an accomplished travel writer. His background research also is of high quality. I would be interested in reading other writing by Torquil in different genres.

I enjoy Torquil MacLeod. His writing is confident and his characters appealing. His flaws are wordy descriptions of buildings and locations in the style of a travel brochure, lacking a novelist's flair for conveying a vibrant picture with minimal words. When in the middle of the book he cuts from scene to scene as the tension builds he is at his best. The beginning is rather tangled and wordy. The plot is clever, but nearly becomes too clever. In the end it is dramatic and gripping. This is not his best, but it is good and like all his fans I look forward to the next.

This is an entertaining series that i hadn't read in a long time. This was one of the better books, actually, i think because the translation was smoother. The author fills the book with information about Sweden, and in this case, Finland, and it's relationship to Sweden. Although it had nothing o do with the story, i found it very interesting as it focused on the number of Finnish children sent to Sweden during WWII.
Standard story, but a little tighter than earlier ones. Likeable characters, though improbable.

The sixth book in the Anita Sundstrom series sees our detective pitted against two old adversaries: Inspector Alice Zetterberg and businesswoman Kristina Ekman. A series of kidnappings and the murder of a prominent journalist occupy the thoughts of the team: are they linked or are they two separate crimes? And what part does Brazilian coffee have to play? Appealing characters and a relaxed style make this an entertaining read.

Always great

A Swedish police procedural without the darker side of Scandinavian mysteries. Anita is a middle-aged police inspector with brains and instincts, but must deal with difficult relationships at work. Her personal life is complicated but includes a caring son, his wife and Anita’s granddaughter. Also, an interested English policeman met on holiday. The whole series is fast-paced, intricate and well researched. Sweden, and Malmo area, forms a strong background.

I really enjoy these "Malmo" books. Intresting stories, believable characters an a few red herrings thrown in for good measure. What I continue to dislike are egotistical, stab you in the back characters. While Moberg seems to have mellowed a bit towards Anita, we now have to deal with the character of Alice who seems to have it in for Anita at all costs. I hope that she finally gets her comeuppance.

Another Success

This is the sixth full length book in this series and like the others it is a high quality mystery. Business kingpins are being kidnapped and held for ransom. There is also a seemingly related murder of a hated journalist. Likeable and determined Inspector Anita Sundstrom carefully collects the evidence and solves this complex mystery

An excellent book until the end

To Torquil MacLeod writes well about Sweden especially Malmo. He has a good sense of place, characters and p!ot. I have enjoyed all of his books so far, but the ending of this book is most disappointing. I do.not condemn the whole book; it is well planned and holds one's attention, but the consummation is utterly implausible. A great pity, I fear.

All the usual characters are back for this 6th book in this series. Swedish DI Anita Sundstrom is still in her, on again, off again relationship with Kevin as she tries to solve the kidnappings of weathy business owners. Added to this, she finds herself reporting to her nemesis, Alice Zetterman. To throw in one more complication, there is the murder of a well known journalist.

This is a pretty good book. I read about 2/3 of it and might return to it one day. The murder victim's only relative and only person he confided in was his mother. At 2/3 into it, the detective decides to speak to the mother. This is Sweden where she would have done that just to be POLITE, but would surely do that to gain information.

Book 6 of the series and an improvement over Book 5, I think. It's obvious that these are books written to a formula - nit necessarily a bad thing, but you know that things won't fully be sorted out until the last few pages.
Good to see further development of other characters in this book and again, a decent storyline.

I have read all six in this series. I like the characters and plot twists. Also the information on the finnish children was interesting. Strange to realize that some Swedish have such negative feelings about Finns . Guess everywhere there are unwarranted prejudices against anyone different.
