Stephanie Laurens was born in Sri Lanka, which was at the time the British colony of Ceylon. When she was 5, her family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she was raised. After continuing through school and earning a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in Australia, Stephanie and her husband moved to Great Britain, taking one of the last true overland journeys from Katmandu to London.

Once in London, Stephanie and her husband both began work as research scientists in Kent. They lived in an area surrounded by history. Their own cottage was built in the 16th century, while next door were the protected ruins of an early Roman villa, and nearby was a 14th century castle.

After four years in England, Stephanie and her husband returned to Australia, where she continued to work in cancer research, eventually heading her own research laboratory. One evening Stephanie realized that she did not have any more of her favorite romance novels to read. After years of thinking about writing her own novel, during nights and weekends for the next several months, she began crafting her own story. That manuscript, Tangled Reins, was the first of her books to be published. After achieving a level of success with her novels, Stephanie "retired" from scientific research and became a full-time novelist. Her novels are primarily historical romances set in the Regency time period.

Stephanie and her husband live on peaceful acreage on the outskirts of Melbourne. If she isn't writing, she's reading, and if she's not reading, she's tending her garden.

Demon Cynster never wanted to marry!!!

description

"Just because I'm not forever by your side doesn't mean that's not precisely where I want to be."

Demon Cynster

description

"I can't remember inviting you in or ever opening the gates. I just turned around one day and you were there. A part of me. "

Oh Demon...you were my least favorite of the Cynsters ...that is...until you finally explained what you felt for Felicity. Your speech to her melted my heart and won me over.

"I want to build a life with you, to have a home with you, to have children with you."

Felicity

description

"I gave you my innocence. It was a gift. One you accepted."

I loved Felicity. She was smart, independent, and resilient! Stephanie Laurens' heroines have been all I can ask for in a historical romance (except for Patience).

These two have been added to my favorite couples. They were a perfect fit and this was a very enjoyable read.

I look forward to more of the Cynster males and can't wait to start the next installment.

I think I just dont enjoy this author's writing. The basis of a good story line is there but the whole series is just chuck a buck with cliches and this idea of an all alpha male clan of powerful muscular tall tanned (yeah in sunny England) rich aristocrats is just too much. I think I its the writing that gets to me because there are too many words just seeming to go on and on and on about feelings when one sentence had already expressed the intention. I found myself skipping pages just because I wanted to get to the end already. WIthout the mystery/investigation which seems to be a running theme in all the books of the series there wouldn't have been a story line not that anything is actually happening anyway.
Rakish feelings Rakish movements Rakish thoughts. Okay we get it, Harry's a rake. And am I the only one that finds the names so ridiculous. Lucifer Demon and Scandal. Come on... Really! I'm sorry I didn't like the book. A lot of readers seem to think S.Laurens is the best author ever. Not my cup of tea.

I was rather reluctant to start this one, I wouldn’t say I was the biggest fan of Stephanie’s previous novels. I do love the series theme as we go through each of the Bar Cynster and I appreciate the idea of the family tree at the beginning of the book making it clear where you are in the family. Labelled on the family tree are each of the books helping you remember the previous characters and how they relate to the current main character.

Flick our heroine of the story is remarkable. I cherish the fact that she is not a poncy damsel in distress but actually has some character to her. This is a strong female character that in no way needs rescuing. Her innocence throughout is endearing, her passion and desire for Demon is to be admired making this a very welcome read. Flick is what I want all females in romances to be.

I can’t not write a review on this book without mentioning the steamy bits in this book. Phewee, this one is very steamy, it definitely made me blush a few times. Stephanie does seem to step it up in this one, you can literally feel the tension and the passion. The desire and lust is palpable throughout, engaging you and drawing you into the romance. It was actually enthralling. I really surprised myself and now cannot wait for the next one in the series. Next up Gabriel.

Omg Demon's real name is Harold ! Hahaha. One of my dogs is called Harold. I shit you not. Thank God everyone called him Demon because I doubt I could have enjoyed this romance as much as I did if he'd been called Harold. Wtf Stephanie Laurens ? Was there no other name she could use for a hero? Harold? That sounds like somebody's widowed kindly uncle ... or a cute fiesty chihuahua. Hahaha. I gotta add that my doggie Harold usually acts like a demon too.
But this was a very entertaining romance and the story line about villains who try to manipulate horse racing results was very interesting. The heroine was a spunky and cute character who gave Demon a run for his money.

I was in trouble at the library for being late to pick up a book on hold. The librarian on duty is a bit of a dragon, but past conversations with her have revealed that she has one soft spot: Stephanie Laurens. Knowing my library record might depend on it, I plucked A Rogue's Proposal off the paperback rack. I'd not read any of SL's Cynster books, and this is #4 in the series. But no matter, it was s shield with which to face her fiery wrath. It worked. A small smile came to her hardened mouth and she furtively stroked the book with her fingertips as she passed it over the scanner.

And she forgave me my transgressions.

So I took it home and gave it look. It's hard to take a hero named Demon seriously. I just gotta say that. It's much about horses, and I like horses, so the first 1/3rd, up to her deflowering, was okay enough. But after the deflowering there were no more horses and it disintegrated into one of those super tedious plots where two people are nuts about each other but not communicating properly about this fact. I ended up skimming the rest of it for sex scenes, but none were as good as the deflowering, which is of epic length and occurs upon a bureau.

I'm a bit sad to say that I'm out here on lonely island with this one, it just wasn't for me. I'll admit that the whole "attracted to her innocence" trope is not one I particularly like. It always reads as a bit skeevy to me. But I've let that go when I like the hero/heroine pairing and still enjoyed the book. I couldn't get there with this one. When Demon & Flick weren't annoying me, they were boring me to tears. There may been a good 300 page romance in here, unfortunately the book is well over 400 pages long.

Pages and pages of Demon lusting after his innocent angel. For all the talk about his demons and rakishness, I never saw any actual evidence of it. It seemed to me that he had a mistress, that was about it. I'm no expert but wouldn't that just be expected for a 30-something man about town? I was expecting at least some naughty proclivities or something but no, he just liked sex. Even back then, I'm pretty sure that as a man that would have just been considered normal.

By contrast Flick is presented as some sort of super virgin. It's like she never had a sexual thought in her head until she met Demon. I realize that young ladies of the time were sheltered but it seems that she had a pretty lax upbringing and hung out at the stables a lot. I guess there never a well formed stable boy or anything while she was growing up to pique her curiosity. Of course, I guess no stable boy could compare to the manliness of Demon. He's so manly he knows she's a female disguised as a boy with one glimpse at her bottom. He's so manly he can't be near her once they get to London because everyone will know they've had sex because she can't hide her "sensual glow" when she looks at him.

I actually thought it might pick up when they get to London and the rest of the family is around but that only lasted for a chapter or so. Then we get more pages of internal monologues that could have been cleared up with one conversation.

There's a mystery too but I couldn't bring myself to care about that either. On the plus side, unlike many a romance pairing, I can see Demon & Flick happily together forever. They share the love of horses and the country. And I guess that's also part of my problem with the book. Outside of the sex, they seem very compatible despite their age difference. So 400 pages of keeping them apart seemed contrived rather than entertaining. I loved Honoria and Devil's story but it's all gone a bit downhill from there for me. I didn't love the last Laurens book I read either. I'm thinking that she may just not be for me.

2.5 Stars. I was really enjoying this book until it took an unfortunate turn near the end. I honestly don't know what the author was thinking...but she made the strong heroine into a total moron in the space of a few pages.

The heroine is so desperate to make the hero love her that she's willing to overlook his mistresses (he's no longer with them but she thinks he is), overlook him ignoring her, overlook his shitty treatment of her... everything. Just as long as he will say he loves her. The heroine had already given the hero her virginity at this point! The book went from the heroine leading the hero around by his balls...to the heroine being totally pathetic. Then she makes several really dumb decisions that put her in danger. I felt like the author just gave up at the end, I can't imagine how the book went downhill so fast otherwise.

Safe; some OW drama caused by past mistress of hero's. Hero manwhore heroine virgin, no others after they meet.

Oh gosh! This was absolutely the best! I don't know if it was just the mood I was in or if it was the magic I could feel between Demon and Flick or what, but I loved this one. In fact, i think it's the best in the series (at least so far).

Demon has usurped Devil as my favorite Cynster man. Want to know how? He said the words! What words, you ask? These - "I love you." none of the other Cynster men have said them. Sure, they all felt it, but they never said it. Demon did! He was scared to admit it, but he said it. And more. His declaration was one of the best I've ever read.

Felicity, or Flick, was strong and smart and a little wild. But she was so vulnerable when it came to Demon. She's been my favorite heroine in this series.

I can't wait to read the next one!

I really like this series. It has great romance with a touch of mystery-suspense. Nothing threatening, but just enough to make it stand out from the straight romance. I loved the heroine. She just wouldn't stay in her place and she knew what she wanted and wouldn't settle for less. The hero was the fourth member of the Bar Cynster to bite the marriage bullet. I was a little disappointed he went down without much of a fight. Four down, two to go and then you have the twin girls. This is a great series about a wonderful family.

Demon Cynster is not about to lose his heart like the three other members of the Bar Cynster have. He enjoys his carefree lifestyle and isn't ready to give it up until he meets his perfect match. When Demon sees Felicity, he immediately knows who she is and he is more than interested, both is what she is doing and in her personally, even though she is the ward of a friend.

Felicity Parteger is undercover in Demon's stable in order to clear a dear friend of race fixing. She knows Demon is a rake of the first water, but she has been in love with him since she was five years old. Felicity wants what her parents had - a marriage based on love and she refuses to accept anything less.

I still really enjoyed this one, but it had a lot more dead time than some of the previous novels.

Still the same kind of misunderstandings about if we are in love or not, but it was still a sweet story. I really enjoyed them together.

Still sexy but not as steamy as some of the previous novels.

Was it ridiculous that a grown man was suddenly in love with a flighty teenager? Yes. Is that true for most historicals? Also yes. Do I really love that all these books have a hero and heroines solve a mystery element? Heck yes. Having a very fun time with this series!

3.5 Stars! Number four in the series and I was kinda looking forward to it, especially since I had to order a copy for my set as we were continuing on with the series and once again discussing it as a buddy read in the Romance Lovers for the Challenge-Impaired group (discussion thread over this-a-way). I was wishing and hoping that Demon that horse master would impress me in ways the other Cynster men so far (while nice) have not quite done. I was hoping maybe he'd be different than the others. Well, aside from the blond hair, he wasn't really. Don't get me wrong he was alright, and definitely had that sex appeal going on (minus the blond hair, at least for me... I couldn't help but give him dark hair in my mind lol) but he was still a controlling, arrogant alpha-type male just like his cousins and brother. At least I know not to expect any different from any of them from here on out, lol. I really liked Flick, the heroine, though. I think she's my favorite heroine so far. She was smart and good, and not afraid to take charge and do what needed to be done, and damn the consequences. I liked it. I also liked seeing how Demon had to learn to put up with it, because there was no way she was going to be all meek and stay at home sewing while he went off to solve the mystery. I liked the mystery too, the whole race-fixing crime was interesting to me, I've always liked horses since I was a wee small kid, and so it was fascinating to see a little bit of how a stable and race was handled. Granted, only a little bit, nothing was too in depth. But I still liked imagining the horses and all that. Their relationship went nicely I thought at first, the attraction was totally there, and everything was agreeable. The scene at the inn, their first time together, y'know, like that, was lovely! I think the author showed a great improvement in the love scenes in this one, it wasn't so flowery and purple, and, well, I thought it was rather good and steamy. It wasn't run of the mill, and I could feel the heat. Nice. But then they go to London. And this is really where Demon got on my nerves. The way he treated her so blandly, avoided spending any time with her aside from a couple small moments, it was aggravating. And his reasons behind it, whether they were historically accurate or not, I thought it was dumb. Oh, he can't dance with her because he's so horribly much older than her (it was an 11 year difference, hardly a May/December thing), they can't go to the park because he has a terribly rakish reputation which, to me, was again, dumb, I mean, really, how many romances are there with a rake hero, and there's never any problem of them spending time together, especially if it's understood by the couple involed/their families/society that they're going to get married. So that really annoyed me. Especially since it made Flick upset and kinda spoiled a little of the sweetness I thought was in their relationship. It just annoyed me. I was so freakin' psyched when she called him out for it, railed at him in the library at someone's ball, poured out her feelings and opinions... It was great! I was so glad she didn't just keep it all to herself like most heroines tend to do. She just rallied the troops and went for it, and it was great. And the follow-up sex, there on the terrace, up against a vine-covered wall... Hot! Like I said, I felt the scenes of that sort in this book were very nicely done, and not all vanilla. Then the masquerade where they're tracking down the villain, again, nice. Plus I was glad some action toward solving the mystery happened, it seemed to move to the back-burner for awhile there while Demon was being all stupid. Then when she tells him she needs to know he loves her, and he finally breaks down and gives in and lets her know how he feels, I thought it was great. And he said the words, he said "I love you." And in a very romantic moment too. So I thought it was great! Finally they can be happy and open with their relationship, and both of their moods improved. Then the finale, the conclusion to the mystery, the confrontation, it was a little rushed, but still kinda exciting for all that, and of course things turned out a-ok. The epilogue was good too, though I'm surprised she wasn't getting married with a bun in the oven after all the wild, lovely sex they had.
I have to say I'm pretty eager to get to the others in this series still. They've all been solid 3 Star reads for me so far, but I'm still hoping to find one in this family that really knocks my socks off. And I'm really looking forward to getting to the twins' stories, I think it'll be intriguing to see a female Cynster featured finally. :) 3.5 Stars!

While this book features your average Cynster – arrogant, dominant, unwilling to commit to one woman and terrified of the words ‘I love you’ – I was glad to see that it finally seemed to deviate a little from the previous three efforts. This is different from the other Stephanie Laurens books that I've read, and so far, it's quite delightful.

I did really enjoy this book from the Cynster family. This time it was Demon (Harry) and the 11 years younger Flick (Felicia).

Torrid Regency Romance. Part of the original Cynster series.

Flick made the book for me. This is about Demon as he tries to flee from London and encounters Flick who is disguised as a stable boy.

Fell in love with Demon, as I have all the men of the Bar Cynster. Demon is set against marriage.

What I love about the Cynster series is how unusual all of the heroines are, and Felicity in A Rogue's Proposal is no exception to this rule.

Recommendation ;)

EXCELLENT!!
I was looking for the next book I might like after Devil's, and this was it(though it was a tad too long)
Demon and Flick know each other from childhood. When he tries to escape the clutches of matrimony, he ends up meeting Flick, or Felicity dressed as a stable hand and the romance begins.
Loads of back and forth, some mild misunderstandings and angst, but their passion was amazing. I think this is my second favorite book in this series.
Safe read(post the couple meeting)

Author: Stephanie Laurens
First published: 1999
Length: 404 pages
Setting: Newmarket and London, 1820 (Regency).
Sex: Frequent. Very explicit (erotic). Could be caught (almost-exhibition).
Hero: 31yo and mentions the age difference every other page. Runs the family horse stud.
Heroine: 20yo orphan of missionaries, brought up by a benevolent uncle, The General.

There's a good story in here.

Race-fixing makes a nice change.

And a nice Older-Man, Younger-Woman relationship / HEA.

But the solid foundations were blurred by purple prose in the heated sex scenes and a tiring refrain of constant yearning and looking like she wants to be fucked. All The F'ing Time.

I really wanted to enjoy it. And mostly I did. So long as I skimmed the too-lengthy sex scenes and persevered through the ton-travails.

Could have been better.

Wanted to be better.

Left me feeling meh.

A Rogue's Proposal
5 Stars

Determined to escape the matrimonial fate of his brother and cousins, Harry “Demon” Cynster travels to Newmarket to look in on his horses. Imagine his surprise when he encounters Felicity Parteger who has grown from a young girl in pigtails into a woman with luscious curves and the face of an angel. Seeking Demon’s aid in uncovering a race-fixing syndicate, Felicity soon realizes that the man she idolized as a child is now a real threat to her heart.

A captivating romance with a charming heroine who has the hero so wrapped up in knots, he doesn’t know if he’s coming or going.

Like his cousins, Demon starts out as the typical devilish rake who forsakes his womanizing ways when he meets his match in Felicity. Although there are moments when his arrogance gets the better of him and his standoffish behavior almost costs him the love of his life, Demon ultimately redeems himself with his open and honest declarations.

Felicity’s surface innocence actually conceals a stubborn, headstrong and independent woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. Despite her intelligence and resourcefulness, she is often reckless and her shenanigans constantly keep Demon on his toes as he attempts to keep up and protect her.

Demon and Felicity’s interactions are exceedingly entertaining and their chemistry is tangible. Laurens’ writing in this area is superb both in terms of the steamy sex scenes and in the emotional intimacy as the reader feels the tension building between the pair.

The mystery focuses Demon and Felicity’s investigation into the fixing of horse races and is the best in the series this far. While the case appears at first to be anti-climactic, the tension ultimately ratchets up and the resolution is very satisfying.

The secondary characters in the form of Demon’s family are wonderful as they embrace Felicity whole-heartedly and accept her into the fold without reservation.

All in all, this is my favorite installment in the Cynsters’ series and I look forward to reading Gabriel’s book next.

If the author decided to steam up the book early, the boring portion would have been salvageable. It wasn't until the last few chapters that I got to enjoy Ms. Laurens skills at writing passionate encounters so vividly unique that you feel as if you're in the room watching it all unfold before your eyes and ears. She is good at making the heroine initiate and yet let her innocent discovery of passion shine throughout the encounter.

Too much time spent on a vacuous horse gambling plot. Her books do suffer with a very weak driving plot.

One might enjoy the way the formal courtship between an older rake and an innocent quasi-debutante is described. The angst H felt at having to observe societal distance to safeguard heroine's innocent reputation is one of the few good bits.
