I got this short (a little over 11000 words) book free on a promotion. In order to get through my reading pile I am choosing books at random, so I didn’t have any idea what to expect. What I got was a slice of nicely observed 1940s British wartime drama.

The story is told from two main viewpoints: Philly, an enthusiastic Land Girl working on a farm in rural Norfolk, and Jimmy, a ten-year-old boy who has been evacuated out of London but has very bad memories of a previous attempt to send him away from home. We also get to meet Philly’s best friend Gracie, who is concerned for the safety of her husband in the RAF, the owners of the farm, a friendly (and conveniently handsome) GI and a pair of Italian prisoners of war. The characters are all well-realised and what we see of them is intriguing. However, with so many character introductions going on there is hardly any room for anything to actually happen other than a few set-piece character introductions such as Philly and Jimmy being run off the road by a random German aircraft on the way from collecting him, only to be nearly run down again by an American jeep.

Surprisingly soon we get to the end. There are a few hooks left hanging for the next volume, but in the same way that nothing really happened, there is nothing to resolve, so it does not feel like an ending, more like a chapter break in a longer book. This is my biggest concern with this story. When I saw how short it was, I assumed that it would be a “reader magnet” provided as a taster for some full-length books. However, iIt appears that Hendry is taking the approach of releasing a series of 10-12000-word novelettes rather than combining them into a single 60-70000-word novel. I can see how this makes sense as a writer, but I am not entirely convinced as a reader. Sometimes I want a book with a beginning, middle, and end, not just one more slice of an ongoing story.

Despite my concerns about the length of the book and the author’s strategy, I still enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the writing, but I was left a little disappointed when it suddenly ended.

This is a great story set in rural England during WW2, but I was so disappointed that it was so short, and finished in a "cliff-hanger"; so of course, I had to buy the rest of the series to see what happened next. The book is well-written, and the characters very credible.
I thought it was a bit of a rip-off having to pay $4.00 per copy for just a few chapters in each book.
