Julius Caesar maintained a private affair with Cleopatra that produced a son, Caesarion (Ptolemy XV). When Caesar was assassinated Cleopatra attempted to have Caesarion named as his heir, but this fell instead to Caesar's grandnephew Octavian. In the Liberators' civil war Cleopatra sided with the Roman Second Triumvirate formed by Octavian, Mark Antony, and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. Cleopatra had an affair with Antony that would eventually produce three Alexander Helios, Cleopatra Selene II, and Ptolemy Philadelphus. Octavian's forces invaded Egypt and defeated those of Antony, leading to his suicide. When Cleopatra learned that Octavian planned to bring her to Rome for his triumphal procession, she committed suicide by poisoning, the popular belief being that she was bitten by an asp.
This was a short book that gives us a lot of information on the life of a woman known to history as a great beauty. Cleopatra was more than just a beautiful and powerful woman. She was also a highly intelligent woman who spoke multiple languages. She was ambitious and observant of those around her. And yes, she was a woman who knew how to use all of her assets to get what she desired.
I learned a great deal about Cleopatra that I hadn’t known before reading this book. It was well written and the further I got into reading about her life, the more interested I became in learning more about her. If you’re interested in learning more about Cleopatra, her life, and her family, give this book a chance. It’s a quick read with a lot of information that is presented in a way that will keep you reading until the end without leaving you feeling overwhelmed or like you are reading a school textbook.
A quick synopsis of the life of Cleopatra, her ancestors, and the turmoil of her final days. It was good for what it is, although quite honestly, much of my confusion about this family is not writers fault but Cleopatra's family itself. The tendancy to intermarry and to name rulers with names already in use makes them quite difficult to learn about and follow. But if you want a short read about her, this is a good choice.
I found this book to be a interesting short read. It can definitely be read quickly but, I found myself savoring it a little. I enjoyed reading about her life and was fascinated. She was an interesting lady that is for sure. I’d definitely recommend this to others. I wished it would have been a little longer and had more. Overall I liked it!
At first, I wanted more details, but soon realized that most would be unnecessary embellishments. This was very readable, in much agreement with facts I have seen before.
