This was an OK collection of short stories set in the Demon Accords series. Nothing special but it did include 3-4 tiny short stories that were worth reading.
We got a glimpse into Chris and Tanya first meeting from Lidia’s POV, a glimpse into Chris’s childhood from his Grandpa’s POV, and a glimpse into Arcady rocking the boat at Declan’s 21st birthday, and a short story following some kids on a camping trip that run into supernaturals and end up getting saved by College Arcane students.
It ended up being OK. The full audiobook only ran 3 hours!
Rating: 3 stars.
Audio Note: James Patrick Cronin did OK with the audio.
Pretty much at this point, this series is five stars and is on my favorites list. Therefore unless a specific book annoys me, each book is going to be five stars. This book is comprised of 4 short stories from the demon accords universe. The first story is how Chris and Tanya first met, except this time is told from the point of view of Lydia. We get to see from her perspective the first impression of Chris and all the behind the scenes action in the vampire world when Tanya starts to speak again after 15 years of silence. This was a very good idea. I sort of wish some other authors would do this for my favorite books. It would be liking re-reading an old favorite by with a new twist. The second story involves Chris as a 15 year old and his grandfather Alex Gordon on a demon hunt. The third story involves the werewolves at arcane and a rogue. The last story was my least favorite as nothing much happened. It mainly focused on Arcadia, Declan, Stacia, and Lydia celebrating Declan's 21st birthday.
Nothing of real significance in these short stories but they were very enjoyable.
The compendiums are short stories, each of which has their own rating.
First Impressions 4 stars Lydia’s point of view of the first few chapters of God Touched
Growing Pains 5 stars Third person about a day with Alex Gordon and a fifteen-year-old Chris
Under Heaven and Earth 3.5 stars Third person about a college student named Keitan and other hiking when things take a dangerous turn. Nothing happens that relates to the main storyline, aside from the author making Dellwood even taller than before.
Boredom killed the Vampire 4 stars It is Declan’s 21st birthday. Arkady is bored and does things that are out of character. His Russian accent is back again, even talking alone with Lydia. In Snake Eyes Arkady claimed he had been faking most of his accent to screw with Deckan, and earlier Chris, although nothing of the sort was ever mentioned before or since. And speaking of Lydia, Tanya also did something that was out of character for her. She calls Lydia “Chapman”. Tanya has never called Lydia by her last name.
Overall, nothing new happens that will affect the long-term plotline. It was still a fun read. Lydia is always good for a laugh. Seeing a young Chris and the love that Alex has for him was nice. Perhaps Keitan will show up again. He got a once in a lifetime introduction to some of the side characters. Seeing Arkady (even though it was odd) was funny. Thank God for designated drivers, otherwise things would have turned really bad. The book did screw up what actually happened to the alcohol that should have been in the Coke. I guess Arkady could have been screwed out of $50, but he should have been able to smell if it wasn’t what he ordered.
Loved this book. The first story was very enlightening as we got see how Chris and Tanya met from Lydia's perspective. The second one showed us a teenage Chris but what made it even better was how Gramps helped in molding the a Chris that readers have come to love. Stories 3 and 4 are more current and are just as enlightening. If you're a fan of the Demon Accords series then you deconstructing want to miss out on this book,
I REALLY liked this small volume of side stories, not only do we get a rare look at Chris' life before the original demon accords book, but we also get to see Lydia when in my opinion she was a likeable character, unlike recent books where I truly wish she'd get killed off for some drama to make her at all relevant and more than just someone who throws shitty one lines and makes everyone paranoid about Declan for no reason. This compendium brings me back to what really got me addicted to this series and it felt like a swift shot of nostalgia. 4.5/5. Would have been a solid 5 stars except I think Conroe skipped too many solid possible side stories and went from book 1 all the way to like book 10+ in the last side story out of nowhere.
Conroe has put together the first volume of stories that give you a glimpse into the demon accords universe from another perspective.
The first story gives Lydia’s insight into Chris and Tanya meeting for the first time. It was fun to see it from her side of things not to mention it’s always nice to revisit the beginning of this love story.
The second story is the story of Chris from his grandfather’s eyes when he was about 15 years old. Chris and Alex get called in to search and rescue a couple of fishermen who have gone missing. The insight into what Alex feels for Chris and how Chris handles demon hunting close to when it all started for him was a story worth including in this book.
The third story gives us a glimpse into the werewolf pack. Keitan is accompanying a friend camping and one of the guys with them is giving off a very strange vibe. Quick thinking maybe the only way the group survives the night.
Finally, the compendium finishes up with a few character favorites. Arkady is bored and decides to mess with Declan only to find that Lydia is not at all impressed. These leads Arkady to question his honor and purpose on this earth.
Amazing. It was awesome to read some short stories set in the Demon Accords Universe. I could read short stories all day about these characters! This is a great way to hold out while waiting for the next addition to the Demon Accords series. I hope John Conroe does more of these Compendiums!
In this volume, John presents the following short stories.
"First Impressions" which is Lydia's impression of Chris right from the very start. It takes us way back to the beginning to Chris's first encounter with Tanya from Lydia's eyes.
"Growin Pains" is a story about a young demon hunter, Chris Gordon, but told from the viewpoint of his grandfather, Alex Gordon.
The last two stories follow the events of Summer Reign.
"Under Heaven and Earth" is about Keitan who becomes a newly infected ware during an act of heroism protecting the girls from his UVM class from a new rogue ware who's going nothing but sex on the brain during a camping trip.
"Boredom Killed the Vampire" was a bit of a comical tale about Vadim. He tries to make trouble for Declan, but not in a malicious way, just to stir up the pot. It ends up backfiring and he has a serious heart to heart with Tayan about his place and purpose.
As always the story lines are engaging, the characters rich, detailed, and the blend of reality and supernatural is well done. The world of Demon Accord characters is broad and each character is strong. So blends of these characters and their interactions are quite lively. These shorts are like chapters in a larger novel length story. That’s how good the world and character building really is; these stories could almost be living around you right now. John Conroe has really produced a nice series that has ability to go far afield. Thank you for being this to us.
I loved those small stories that show the different points of views of the other characters.. I hope someday there is a story or Novella that is totally from Nikka's point of view.
As for the chapter of Zone Wars that was included in this story. Sadly it seems to be just another kind of Hunger Games. Interested in seeing how it goes but I am really hoping that it is more like the Demon Accords in levels of awesomeness.
I enjoyed this collection of short stories. It was cool to see things from different character's perspectives and I especially liked going back in time and being reminded of things earlier in the books. For instance, I had forgotten all about Tanya not talking to anyone before she met Chris. I had forgotten that she used to be so different and it lends a different perspective looking at her in the storyline now. It really makes me look forward to the next installment.
I enjoy novellas and even books that retell a favorite book or section from another character's perspective. So, this was like going down memory lane - a favorite memory. And, as another reviewer noted, it was nice to go back to the characters, when things and events weren't so BIG. I hope this side trip by the author reminds himself of the love he had for his own characters.
For anyone who enjoys The Demon Accords series, reading this is a no-brainer.
Not sure if this volumebod stories associated with the Demon Accords needed to be written. A couple of the tables were ok and one was just bad. Little to no character development, little int the way in pacing and story detail. Even though theses are short stories, I expected better .The only saving grace was the snippet of the new story Zone Wars. I'm looking forward to that one. I'll buy the next volume hoping it's better. We'll see.
I really love the stories scene from another viewpoint and I’m can’t wait for the new characters written in this story to show up in the demon records and the snippet or I should say the couple of chapters from the zone wars oh man please write faster because it sounds wonderful
I have read many vapire/mirthren/darkken/.../lycos/Were/shapeshifter books before. Mr.Conroe's reimagination and baseline store to include fairy is just AWESOME!!!! Thank you for spending time away from the financial stuff to bless us with these tales.
I haven't found a book of John Conroe's that I didn't love!
This is just another view of the stories I fell for In the first place. These new perspective views just add more flavor to an already impeccable dish. Thank you John for making my spare time and that of my grandchildren special. We love the Demon Accords!
The group of stories in this book provide some fun back stories of a number of the characters we've come to know and love in The Demon Accords series. Want to know more about Chris? How about how he and Tania became an item? What do 500 year old vampires to when they're bored? These are just some of the story lines covered here. Enjoy.
I love these collections of little sidestories, and with every reread of this series, i tend to read these in their respective timeslot between the books of the main series. Very nice addition and the stories manage to flesh out the protagonists. Think of these Compendiums as the Spices to a well-cooked meal, enhancing the main dish, even if they are not that impressive by themselves.
Short stories that do not impact the overall progress of the series. Quick nuggets of back stories or different POV from original plot. Good way to keep up with the main characters and some additional glimpses into their past. One exception - a story involving the Arcane kids - mostly the werewolf pack with Matthew and J thrown into the mix.
Four shorts about some o!d friends and some new. A little background and some extra details to further flesh out our favorite characters. Can't wait for the next one!
The four stories are great. I am also hooked on the two chapter tease of the new project. Can not wait for the next set and the next full story. Also congratulations on becoming a full time author.
Excellent little stories. Seeing the events of the first book from a new perspective helped to ground the reality. The other stories nicely fill in some edges and refresh my love for the series.
I really enjoyed the point of view from Lydia and Alex Gordon it has changed the way I read the first book. I feel like a good but very difficult point of view would be from the almighty GOD himself and how he set it all up to present day in the books. Love the books.
Excellent as usual. It is a tad short, but Mr. Conroe is upfront with that as it is really a two-parter leading up to the next novel in the Demon Accords series. I love to have the backstory on most of the series I follow and this is a good one. I'm ready for the next. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate that the stories are all related to each other. They are uniformly well written. I particularly liked the first and last vampire tales. All in all, very nice.
The title said it all. I expected it to be boring short stories or from what I knew, seeing it from another angle. However loved it from Lydia’s point of view & lays a new perspective! Volume 2 here I come.
