György Lukács was a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, aesthetician, literary historian and critic. He is a founder of the tradition of Western Marxism, an interpretive tradition that departed from the Marxist ideological orthodoxy of the Soviet Union. He developed the theory of reification, and contributed to Marxist theory with developments of Karl Marx's theory of class consciousness. He was also a philosopher of Leninism. He ideologically developed and organised Lenin's pragmatic revolutionary practices into the formal philosophy of vanguard-party revolution.

His literary criticism was influential in thinking about realism and about the novel as a literary genre. He served briefly as Hungary's Minister of Culture as part of the government of the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic.

This is by far and away the best work of literary criticism I’ve read — and it is, simultaneously, next to Hannah Arendt, the most illuminating insight into the rise of fascism in Germany I’ve encountered—in particular addressing the phenomenon of “armed bohemians,” writers like Pound and Celine who got lost in the vortex of nationalism. I picked it because I was a third through the Magic Mountain and felt I was missing a lot of allegory — if you’re going to dedicate any time to Mann I highly recommend reading this, a distillation and encapsulation of Mann’s work as a whole that is a work of art in its own right. I wish every author had an analogous book I could turn to prior to deciding who was and wasn’t worth the time of digging into.

Naphta strikes back! Apparently unaware of his satirization as Naphta in The Magic Mountain, Lukács provides a thorny Marxist reading of Mann's works. And it is a striking and odd reading experience, as if Naphta stepped out of the book and assessed his author's position in and posture towards the class struggle.

Fans of Lukács will enjoy this, fans of Mann too, though perhaps less, as the perspective here is strictly Marxist in the most theoretical and schematic sense. There are some interesting insights into Mann's "discovery of the bourgeois man" and so on. But the greatest pleasure of this book really comes from reading Lukács as Naphta. Mann absolutely nailed him.

some nice insights, especially concerning the antiutopian attitude in mann; not 2 heavy on the marxisn tho he uses his tools (and shews his biases) well

A collection of essays and reviews by Lukacs discussing Thomas Mann, without much substance in terms of new contributions to Lukacs' oeuvre. Interesting nonetheless, especially Lukacs' analysis of Naphtha without acknowledging that it is a satire of him (despite the fact that he was aware that it was). I wish I had a much more famous progressive acquaintance I could write Marxist critiques of and publish a book from it.
