A quick read that lingers. There are many poems within that I’ll return to in order to digest them more slowly.
The Fall
The mix of writings in this section have a beautiful way of mimicking the inner battles we face in the wake of heartbreak: hurt and angst, blame and shame all mixed in together like you would expect from swirling emotional seasons. There was a bit too much wallowing in this section for my taste, but just when I was feeling my eyes begin to roll, there was a gorgeous piece of imagery to pull me back in.
The Rise
Much more empowering and full of gems to share with others who may need to hear them. Some of them towards the end were more one-line-prose, which didn’t end the book on a super strong note for me. That said, the last poem is gorgeous, so all is forgiven.
The writing itself was enjoyable with some amateurish word choices or phrasing here and there that really stood out against the elegance of the imagery and personification throughout. This can be forgiven from a debut collection, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this writer as the ages pass. It is clear there are carefully chosen words l peppered throughout to make the collection a cohesive body of work in not only theme and style but also through specific thoughts and images conjured while reading.

This book found me and I purchased it literally a week before I discovered my partner of 3.5 years was in love with someone else. The poems in here perfectly shredded and consoled my bruised heart, and I'm eternally grateful for the catharsis these poems gave me while going through my own heartbreak and learning to fall in love with myself again. Thank you, thank you, thank you. <3

Maia, you took us on a journey from sadness to contentment. It was an honest depiction of the self-love and self-worth journeys. Such an authentic, relatable book. Thanks for allowing us to have a peek at your inner world!
