Wicked Witches of the Midwest #12

A Breath of Witchy Air

Rate this book
Hemlock Cove is mired in a cold snap, which means the town is calm and quiet. That all changes in an instant when a beer truck tips over on the highway and half the town shows up to get drunk.
Bay Winchester is about to be the sole owner of the town newspaper so she heads out to take photos … and accidentally stumbles over several bodies. It seems there’s a serial killer on the loose, although no one can figure out if the dump site was convenient or if the killer is local.
Some hard digging leads Bay to a local college, where the only thing that stands out is a cell phone game that seems to be taking over the populace. Bay can’t shake the feeling that there’s something off about the game, but that pales in comparison to the dead girls and the motive behind multiple killings.
Things spiral out of control when the game developers pick Hemlock Cove for a big event, which means the town is suddenly flooded with gamers … including Aunt Tillie, who decides that winning really is the most important thing.
Things are about to get wicked for the Winchesters. There’s a killer in their midst and Bay appears to be displaying a new power that no one saw coming.
It’s only a matter of time until two powerful forces collide. Who comes out standing is anybody’s guess but Bay’s new power will be on full display … and may be the ultimate factor in her survival.

When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail.
Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.

5 Stars... This was an exciting read from the start... When Bay stumbles over a dead body, literally, she finds herself immersed into the world of gaming and the deadly consequences that can result... As Bay maneuvers through this ghostly mystery, she discovers that her powers are changing and manifesting some frightening results... The Winchester clan must ban together to bring justice to the dead before the murderer strikes again... Amanda Lee brings her humor and snark as well as all the schmaltz we love to see to this thrilling and entertaining read... Once again, I loved hanging with the Winchester witches and watching as they navigate both their supernatural and mortal worlds:)

She’s Back!

Lee is back on stride with this one. This is a nice, tight mystery with plenty of suspense. Bays ghost whisper powers grow into something more powerful and we can look forward to exploring them with her.
Although the Winchester zaniness was in full force, it actually made some sense this time instead of seeming like a plot filler. The game in this story had more than a passing resemblance to Pokémon Go, without the built in safety and privacy protections. Kind of leaves you glad the Pokémon creators had enough prior experience to take those precautions.
The villains were not so easy to spot this time, due to Lee inserting a few red herrings to keep us guessing. I gave it four stars.

This book begins with Bay and Landon moving finally being just two in their house, and Bay taking over the newspaper. But, when a freak accident happens where Bay ends up finding some bodies things start to go south quickly. Now, it is up to Bay and her friends to figure out what is going on, and how to stop it.

This book was really good. I thought it was a great story, and I loved how Bay's character is growing in this story. It's great. She's starting to learn more and really turn into a great witch. I loved how it was more about her and how she dealt with things as well. I can't wait for more in this series now.

Yet another highly entertaining episode in the life of the Winchesters. Bay has a weird experience with the ghosts of the recently murdered girls, even weirder than usual for her that is. I liked this instalment even more than usual, we learned more about the family and Bay herself makes a startling new discovery of her own. Just where will that lead her. You would also think that with all the Winchesters 'happy' in their lives and love lives that life would be dull - oh no! Just because they are comfortable in who they are after 12 books (and a host of shorts) does not lessen the snark, the humour and my devotion to reading about them. As good as ever.

A Breath of Witchy Air took us into the world of gaming. As a Mother of a gamer the fears I have had came to life in the pages of this book. When a similar game to the one in this book came out and my son was playing it, I had many discussions with him about the very topics in this story. The reality of the things that could happen and the level of intensity this type of game brings is overwhelming. The story was great, I love being surprised and I thought I had it figured out. I also love that Bay is getting her witchy on "finally" even if she was just smacked with a new revelation. She will be ok...wait until Thistle and Clove find out! 😱

Reading this series is like baking chocolate chip cookies on a Tuesday. You always know what to expect because you always use the exact same recipe, and it isn't going to be mind-blowing, but if you just want a nice treat, Wicked Witches of the Midwest is the way to go.

This one did have an awesome new development that I'm excited about.

Great. As usual. Love the characters, and their snark. It’s fun, and without the stress of thrillers. I hope to read all of Lee’s books.

This one starts off quite dark but I like the idea of the computer game in it. Love the beer at the start and Aunt Tillie of course is the star of the show in this one. The idea is cool and so relevant to our times. I can't believe that Bay isn't dead yet. She gets caught by all the bad guys in the end.

Another good time with my favorite witches

Bay and Landon are back and this time, they have to deal with millenials obsessed with phone games. Someone is killing girls and it gets eerily close to Bay. Aunt Tillie is in this one quite a bit as she teams up with Bay and it's very entertaining. Bay acquires a new skill and it should make things more interesting in the future.

I had a difficult time with this book. Storyline was OK the problem was I felt like the author of lost her voice. The first half of the book didn't even sound like the author wrote it and I have read almost all of her books. The snarky sarcasm was really toned down in this book. I liked the fact that the main character was using more magic and the fact that her powers were growing. I did not like however the fact that her boyfriend did not sound like her boyfriend that the chief did not sound like the chief and that the main character does not sound like the main character herself. For example when Bay says pain in my keister that doesn't sound like something they would say. In fact it doesn't even sound like something the writer would say. But the tone started to change halfway to the book and it started to sound more like the author. This series is my favorite. However I was disappointed with this installment.

The Winchester Witches are at it again

The Winchester Witches are back in full force but, once again, this story focuses on Bay and he ability to talk to ghosts. Four girls have been murdered and their bodies dumped in Hemlock Cove. Bay stumbles over the first body while shooting pictures of town residents getting drunk from a beer truck accident on the highway. Meanwhile, Aunt Tillie has become obsessed with a phone video game, is on a quest to win it all and uses Bay's image as her avatar so the younger people will play with her. If you love the Winchester Witches, this book if for you.

A new twist!

I love the new twist Lee hands us in this installment of the series. I really didn’t expect it and, probably should have. The best takeaway is that Bay is better than before; and by that I mean she’s the (mostly) confident, independent witch we missed as she was kvetching and insecure about all things Landon.

A Breath of Witchy Air is a spot on title and I’m excited to see where this new twist takes the series.

Fantastic

I absolutely LOVE the Winchester witches; there are times their snarkiness makes me laugh out loud. I must say however, A Breath of Witchy Air is the BEST one I've read in this series and I have read them all. This was the first time in a long long time that I have not figured out the ending within a couple of chapters. Ms Lee you were outstanding with this one!! Can't wait for another book to come out.......thank you for the entertainment.

Fun mystery

The Winchester witches are always good for a laugh, or a brawl, sometimes at the same time. Bay finally gets to close on the sale of the newspaper office, but celebration is delayed while she helps Landon hunt a serial killer. The antics are fun and not too farfetched. I wish we'd see more of Thistle and Clove, but they seem to get very little page time since they moved out of the guesthouse.

For the gamers

The wicked witches get hooked on a video game with hilarious results. Landon has yet another weird co-worker and Aunt Tillie turns out to be a techno geek! More fun and excitement with the Hemlock cove crowd. This is a fun series and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun paranormal read.

The family who’s images are here or not enjoyable

If any family in reality treated each other the way these do consistently they would not last long because they are so belligerent and uncaring of each other. I know they’re supposed to be caring but it just doesn’t seem real

Everything is changing

With Thistle moving out and Bay and Landon being the only ones left in the guest house, it seems that everyone is maturing in ways, discovering that they may be the youngest generation in their family but that they are not quite with the times. A computer phone game has Thistle, Clove and Aunt Tillie at odds with each other, and Bay hated the game from the onset. It seems that since Bay is the last witch left in the guest house that her witchy powers are evolving.

This book didn't have as much humor as other books, but it is still a great read. It gives a few answers, like why the guest house was built in the first place, and allows the characters to perhaps mature a bit as well. It did seem like both Bay and her Mom were angry and frustrated for a good part of the book. It seemed to be be cause of the game and the behavior of those playing it, add in a sexist computer expert and it's a wonder that no one got turned onto a real life toad.

Like with Amanda Lee's other books, this one leaves me wanting more and excited to learn more about how Bay is a necromancer will evolve. Keep them coming.

For anyone who has enjoyed this series, I highly recommend you read the other series by Amanda Lee. I have read them all and love them for different reasons, but one thing is the same, I can't put them down and am always waiting for the next book to come out.

Okay, since I kind of binge-read all twelve of these (though I didn't go after the shorts or the fantasy novels), this is kind of an... overview review of all of them.

I'm going to give the series as a whole 3 stars. For the most part, I liked them - and more importantly, I had a lot of fun reading them, and I think that's the most important part of reading fiction. It's for fun, for your enjoyment. If I'm not having fun with a book, I just put it down.

They all follow the same sort of setup - some sort of crime happens in Hemlock Cove, Bay (and inevitably Clove, Thistle, Tillie, and Goddess knows who else) end up involved, Bay gets herself in trouble despite warnings from Chief Terry and Landon, law enforcement or witchcraft saves the day, and everything's wrapped up in a tidy package with a bow on top at the end.

Formulaic? A little bit. Some of the plots blend together because of similarities, but there were a few in particular that stood out.

In a way, this series reminds me of the Stephanie Plum novels - light, short, easy to read novels that some people sneer at and call "chick lit" like that's supposed to be a derogatory term. Well, fuck that. I like my chick lit, and I love it witchy.

There are some character issues - immaturity and co-dependence being the main features that left me shaking my head. Landon displays some signs of being an abuser in some passages that you can check out in my notes/highlights of the books, that stood out in particular to me because of my own experience with abuse. He's definitely not intended to be abusive, and if you haven't experienced it I can see how it might be difficult to pick up on.

Honestly, I'm kind of sad that there aren't any more full-length Winchester novels out yet. I might have to go check out her other series!

Pokémon Go for witches!!

When Bay finds herself out on the highway to report on a beer truck accident that has half the town, including Aunt Tillie, getting drunk one morning she literally falls over a dead body hidden in the snow.

She then finds three more bodies on the opposite side of the highway while she's trying to stay out of the way while the investigation team recover the first.

The dead girls are students at a local community college so Bay and Aunt Tillie take a trip there in the hunt for a link between them. What they find is an almost empty campus and a café full of students all intently playing "Infinity Echo" on their phones. It's hard to draw their attention to answer the most basic questions because they're fixated on wandering around and collecting enough items to progress to battle.

Something about the game makes Bay uneasy, and when first Aunt Tillie and then Thistle and Clove become addicted to playing it she becomes even more concerned.

Hemlock Cove is the next battle venue and with an influx of young adults, and Aunt Tillie, rushing wildly about collecting virtual items, it's not going to be easy to work out which one is collecting real people..

Amanda M. Lee Makes Life Worth Living!

Ms. Lee makes life so much more interesting with her books. I loved this book, just like all the others. It was fun to see Bay's powers grow and strengthen. I called the plot line from the beginning when we were told about the avatars, but it didn't detract from the mystery or the excitement of watching Bay develop her abilities more. I'm excited to see how this plays out over the next several books. This is my favorite series of Ms. Lee's followed by The Grimm series. It's like visiting old friends every time I read a book. Plus my abs get a workout from laughing!

It seems like Ms. Lee & Ms. Hart (who I'd swear were the same author if the both didn't turn out so many books) might be gearing up for a combined book with the WWoTMW & Ivy Morgan & maybe Harper Hallow. That would be interesting. Or maybe I'm way off base.

Either way I can't wait for the next book!

Loving Bay!!!

This book was all about a phone game very similar to Pokemon go where players had to walk around everywhere and collect items and do raids to earn rewards. As I play Pokemon. GO, this story was interesting as are all the books in this series. It reminded me how popular Pokemon go was at the beginning and how lots of people played it.
Another interesting part of the story was Bay getting a new power which she herself didn't know about until it was pointed out to her.
In this story Bay discovers several dead bodies of young women in the snow while taking pictures of a overturned lorry that carried kegs of beer which spilled all over the road.
She investigates the case and discovers a link between the game and the murders. soon things take a dangerous turn when bay is singled out by the murderer. Will Bay discover the culprit before she herself becomes the next victim?
Loving the Winchester series. Can't wait for the next one.

Another wonderful mystery to solve in Hemlock Cove, not that the thought of a serial killer on the loose is wonderful mind you but being back in Hemlock Cove for another exciting adventure is always a thrill.

Bay and Landon finally have the guest house to themselves, Bay is about to sign the final papers to own the local Paper so she will be her own boss but other things have her attention after she finds 4 dead bodies partially buried on the side of the highway and when the ghosts of those bodies all appear they are acting mighty weird, so understandable Bay is a little preoccupied which in turn makes Landon more worried than usual if that's ever possible ....lol

A new phone app game has everyone from 10-100 going a little nuts around town as well with Aunt Tillie and Thistle leading the charge but there is also great danger lurking........

It’s about time Bay became a “legit” witch. Or at least it’s looking like she might be headed that way. It was a nice change that Aunt Tillie didn’t have to come to the rescue AGAIN. Landon was awesome in this book. Their relationship is progressing nicely. I missed the three stooges (Bay, Thistle and Clove) the books are really funny when the three of them play detectives. I’m starting to wonder how it is that Thistle seems to be getting grouchier and yet Marcus just keeps tolerating it. She could tone it down some and still be her snarky self. Aunt Tillie usually has the best one liners but it seemed like there was a change up this time around. Can’t decide if that was good or bad. All in all the book was well written, the plot was somewhat predictable (except I didn’t expect the person that was the villain) and the snark was right in point ;)

Held my attention

I enjoyed this story. Yes, the author still believes in overusing what would be fine once or twice per book ("be careful, I'm careful, be more careful" and "smirk"), and I missed the point of the prologue, but the plot is intriguing. Is something taking over the youth? What's wrong with these ghosts? (Trick question.) Who is Bay's stalker? (Also a trick question! ) What's with Bay's magic? All of these questions are answered, the mystery is solved, Bay is SLOWLY becoming comfortable with her magic, and Aunt Tillie is even briefly restrained in this well-paced plot full of red herrings to misdirect the reader. Here's hoping "the old croaker" shows up to challenge Tillie, and the aunts truly take down Tillie to administer some much needed humility and show the girls it CAN be done!

While out investigating a story for her newspaper, poor Bay finds the dead bodies of four girls. There seems to be no connection between the deaths until Bay is contacted by the four ghosts - or, as it turns out, she has conjured them to her. It seems she has discovered a new talent in her magical arsenal - as a necromancer. The connection between the deaths is a game that everyone is addicted to playing on their phone...and you know Aunt Tillie is going to take advantage of that! I read this series for the pure fun and entertainment aspect of it, but this book seemed to me to have a bit more of a serious story going on. But don't worry - there is still enough of the author's trademark snarkiness and hilarious one-liners to keep you coming back for more!

This book does involving solving murders but also deals with a new and major development in Bay's witch abilities, a development that is upsetting to her, major to her and yet at the same time can come in quite useful in the future.

Bay finds four bodies of young women frozen in the snow and is able to bring them up as ghosts but something isn't quite right about what is going on.

If that wasn't enough to deal with there seems to be vandalism trouble with Brian who is massively upset about losing 'his' newspaper.

To make things even more complicated for her it seems that the murders might just be connected to a new game for the cell phone, Infinity Echo. It's a game that causes problems for the entire town and could possibly cost Bay her life.

Good book, but Bay is getting more annoying

I chose a 4 over a 5 because I think the lead character, Bay, is coming across as annoying. She wants independence yet she acts stupid. She can be downright mean and stubborn. Now I know the author, Miss Lee, has mentioned her characters being snarky and I don't have a problem with that. Aunt Tillie is my favorite character and I find myself laughing out loud reading it. However, Bay is a contradiction all throughout the story. She has been getting more annoying than any of them. She used to be equally my favorite character along with Tillie. If you are gonna make her independent then make her independent. But don't make her stupid and mean, it's annoying.

I love 💘 her Wicked Witches of the Midwest books

Ms. Lee says her snark in the books might upset some people. Personally, I love it. I wish the Winchester witches were my family. My family was dysfunctional in a bad way. The Winchesters are dysfunctional in a good way. The threats they use "eating dirt and you're on my list" are hilarious. Along with the snark is the obvious love they have for each other . Makes for very funny and well rounded characters. There is one thing that I would like to see though. I would like to see the younger generation of Winchesters embracing and using their magic.

They keep getting better.

I loved this installment of WWM. Bay and Landon are as cuddly and sweet as usual. There's a twist in this book for Bay that is pretty cool.
Bay literally stumbles upon a dump site for a serial killer. Her investigation leads her to an online college and a group of students playing a a new online game.
Brian is trying to be sneaky regarding his sale of the Whistler to Bay. He becomes aggressive and erratic when he doesn't get his way.
With an ex-boss, a weird game and a serial killer on the loose, Bay and Land on have their hands full.
