Prismatic is the transparent memoir of Camarda's struggle to reconcile both the death of his father and his independence as a gay man, and explores both the vibrant and darkest parts of the years he spent suppressing his identity. An empowering exploration of dysfunctional family ties, toxic love, mental illness, and debilitating grief, Camarda embarks on a journey to rebuild his identity and come to terms with his new, refracted normalcy.
"We live on in the memories of the ones we touch in our lives, not by our anxieties, our arguments, or our things."
Vaughn-Shane really changed the way I thought about memoirs and made me question why I always default to assuming I won't enjoy them. Prismatic is engaging, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking.
My first thoughts as I was reading the book were extreme joy at Vaughn-Shane's writing style. The style is beautiful, easy to read, gripping, and helped me be IN the life he lived. There was a lot of feeling and thought put into the paragraphs and it radiated. This excellent and unique writing style helped me to fly through the pages, refusing to put the book down.
As an individual who struggles greatly with anxiety, the detail and situations that Vaughn-Shane shares in his book pulled me into deep feelings of anxiety, making me feel like I was right there with him in those moments. His detailed accounts flooded me with emotion and really helped me to understand what message Vaughn-Shane was sharing with us readers at the end.
I would have loved to have been given more context on how Vaughn-Shane was able to salvage his relationship with his parents after the incidents in the first chapter. The transition to the second chapter felt a bit abrupt and left me feeling lost, but this didn't take away from the writing or the overall message of Vaughn-Shane's memoir so I feel as though my personal curiosity isn't enough reason to take away a star from my rating.
My heart hurt for the pain and isolation Vaughn-Shane experienced due to SO MANY traumatic situations completely out of his control. This book is a beautiful reminder of the strength within us, around us, and the resilience of humans by nature.
Motivational and emotional, a great reminder to live life to the fullest and to appreciate the things you love every single day.
"Yeah, I've been through a lot before then, but really, what would it be without my loss?"
