Most people, not just children but adults as well, love listening to tales of strange spirits. Join author Eric Knudsen, born and raised on the island of Kaua‘i, as he shares experiences with ghosts and akua (spirits). This classic folktale, aptly named, "Spooky Stuffs" is full of spine-tingling short stories of one-eyed giants, pali (cliff) dwellers, restless skeletons and other ghostly creatures that haunt the imaginations of children and adults alike. Illustrator Guy Buffet’s chilling images bring these spooky tales to life and will make you think twice about reading alone in the dark. "Spooky Stuffs" was first printed in 1974 and continues to be a popular folk tale. This second edition publication of "Spooky Tales" is a tribute to Knudsen’s legacy.
Eric A. Knudsen is from a long time kamaina family on Kauai. He was a rancher, farmer, politician and well known storyteller. Thankfully he wrote down some of these stories. Look for audio files of his radio broadcasts from the 1940s.
Although Spooky Stuff sprinkles in some mildly interesting Hawaiian folklore, the ghost stories lack suspense and the bumbling prose falls short and flat. Where it picks up the slack is in the illustrations. A few haunt me as much now at forty as the did at four. If you come across this book, the pictures are worth a look-see but that's where it ends.
