This boxset includes a series of episodes in the Project RM story, starting with Genesis; then The Code; Intelligence; Mission RM; Rivalry; Last Cell; and Incursion. The story centres on a genius and polymath, sixteen year old Joseph Solomon and his relationship with an attractive girl called Laurel Lyons, who he has been trying to get the courage to even speak to since he was twelve. They are in some of the same classes and are both under the tutelage of a Professor Drucker, for advanced teaching and learning in lots of different areas. The year is 1962 and the Cuban missile crisis with the prospect of nuclear war with Russia over them placing missiles in Cuba, is all in the news. Joseph is suddenly kidnapped as part of a much larger plot by the KGB to get genius kids taken away from the States and a plot to leave the US without the scientists of the future. Much like the US took a lot of scientists from other countries after WWII and this helped them create a lot of their power advantages over other countries.

Joseph needs to escape his situation, as possible global nuclear war could be starting and to gain enough courage to speak to Laurel. Someone close to him will betray him, but there is a far worse betrayal to come for Joseph, which could destroy all the steps he has taken so far! A new idea for a safe guarding of young talents such as his and Laurel’s, is suggested by Laurel, where groups of super intelligent people would be kept safe in various areas around the country, if not the world, so that if a worldwide disaster or war occurs, there will be people still around who can help restart power, develop technology created over the last one hundred years but then lost due to the disaster and rebuild civilisation. It isn’t enough to hope that survivors would include people with the greatest amount of knowledge over a wide number of scientific areas.

Joseph and laurel have a lot to contend with in each of the separate short stories in the boxed set. For sixteen year olds, they both have a huge intelligence and Laurel has a number of secrets and skills that Joseph knows nothing about. She has withstood a lot of pain and suffering in her role within the small group and her past will hinder her when they meet up with other kids held in similar situations. Joseph certainly has to come into his own and carry out some daring escapades of his own! He may be a lot more mature than other kids his age, but physically he has not yet grown into his outer shell, that is until the events in this series! You soon forget about the ages of them both as the stories continue and they have so much to contend with. A great set of stories and each one takes them further into a world where they may actually have more control over what happens to them. A fascinating set of reads which I would recommend to others. It brings together the past and the fear of the possible nuclear conflict between the US and Russia over Cuba, genius kids being taken for their intelligence, the KGB, FBI and CIA. I look forward to reading the next main book in this series. I received an ARC copy of the boxset from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the boxset above.

A great short story introducing the reader to the world of Project RM. This little gem left me wanting more, so as soon as I finished it, I immediately purchased the full-length novel, PROJECT RENAISSANCE MAN. I can't wait to submerge myself into this world.

A good start to this interesting series! Set in the 60's in America, a Russian spy adventure! I will look for more by this writer as I did enjoy this!
