The demonic force that’s cursed the Dyer family for generations has returned even stronger! Defeated by Moll Dyer a century earlier, the demon Laris lays claim to another Dyer child.

Homesteading on Devil’s Peak, skin-walking shaman John Dyer must fight to save his bloodline. Can the Dyers stand against the horrific desires of a centuries old demon? Can their faith in each other overcome the evil pitted against them?

This historically accurate epic follows John- scion of the Dyer family, and the great-great grandson of the venerable Moll Dyer-- in his quest for a new life, and a place to settle down and call home.

The fates conspire against the Dyers, and only their sorely tested faith in each other can overcome the evil set in place against them.

The author is a rare native of Southern Maryland, and a graduate of University of Maryland, University College. Prior to retirement from a position with a major Aerospace Corporation, he tried his hand at a variety of occupations- from grocery store clerk to warehousing, from shoveling coal to a four year stint with the U.S. Army. When he isn’t writing, he enjoys time with his family and grandchildren, kayaking (mostly flat water please), fishing, hiking, hunting, wine-making, and pursuing his other “creative passion”- woodcarving.
After his family and cheesecake, reading was his first love. It exposed him to people, cultures and ideas he’d never experience otherwise. Writing was a natural extension of this “out of body” experience as characters carved little niches in his skull, showing their worlds, and their possibilities. He's hopes to honestly convey the stories they've whispered in his ears.
Often bloody, habitually dark, always original!

My review is 4.6 stars.

This is a book #2 of the Dyer family series. One thing that's the most important part of your life is that you need to progress and in my opinion, I would like to say that Dave really knows how to progress and excel forward in life.

"He really outclassed himself with this book".

His Father's Blood is a continuation of the story and it really exceeds my expectation since I have read the first one, Moll's story. Dave really did an awesome job the way he wrote down the book, all the perspective in the story and the characters, awesome. The way the characters of the book developed in the book shows how much calm and control author has. He really did an excellent work in the story and as the book is a historical-paranormal story, Dave did complete justice to the plot and the book.

With this book, Dave just made me more hungry about the story and the upcoming book in the series. And you know when a reader says that he/she got hungry about the story, "with what fine class author had written it".

I would definitely like to recommend this book to all paranormal reader who loves to read about demons, ghost but with a sensible strong plot and a nail-biting story that will keep you glue right till the end.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

I must say the old adage rings dreadfully true for this tale. Indeed, the cover of this book reflects nothing of its outstandingly dark and fascinating contents. Rare is a sequel that outshines its predecessor... but this one did just that. I enjoyed Moll (book 1), but this book far exceeded my expectations. As I read it I was reminded of the demons and darkness I found in the Frank Peretti books I read growing up, but of course this book had much more adult themes.
This book is a gem... I loved it and couldn’t put it down. I look forward to seeing what happens with book 3 in this series.

Deliciously descriptive

The second book in this series matches the first with its wonderfully descriptive, well-written scenes set in and around Southern Maryland. The characters are brought to life - and death - and you can't help but picture and feel the heartache and sacrifice for each of them. Truly a pale turner and I would recommend this book to everyone who loves a good, gruesome and gutwrenching read.

His Father's Blood is the second book in the series, Legends of Family Dyer. Although I read the first book (5 star review), Thompson does an outstanding job in bringing the reader up to speed whether or not the reader began on book one. John Dyer bunkers down in a small cabin outside of town in Maryland. He is part Native American and dabbles with shape shifting, but is fully aware of some dangerous spirits who might show up uninvited. He befriends a disturbed women who has a bad reputation. She gets a hold of his spell book and begins to shape-shift without him. She gets involved with an evil spirit and goes on a revenge murder spree. Meanwhile, John falls in love with the preacher's daughter. The preacher doesn't approve of John and causes obstacles in their relationship. There are more subplots, twists, and turns, but I don't want to give away any spoilers.

My Review: As usual, David Thompson pens an entertaining, face-paced, page-turning novel that had me hooked from page one. I particularly loved Sally Ann, the town ho! She reminded me of the Joker in a way because she snapped after receiving so much cruelty in her life. I really loved Laris, the spirit, as well. The other characters were three dimensional and original. Thompson is especially talented at dialogue. The way the characters talk seems spot on for rural 18th Century.

On a side note, Thompson is not just writing fiction. The real Moll Dyer was accused of witchcraft and driven out of her home. She died on a rock, frozen to death. Her spirit reportedly still haunts the area.

I would recommend Thompson's His Father's Blood to anyone who likes paranormal stories. Again, another impressive read! Look forward to the third book. 5/5 Stars

David W. Thompson fans get ready for a spine-chilling, breath-sucking, legendary read that rivals—nay, surpasses—his first epic novel and beginning chapter in the Legend of the Family Dyer Series , “Sister Witch: The Life of Moll Dyer” with “His Family’s Blood (Legend of the Family Dyer Book 2)”!

“His Family’s Blood” is a superlative tale that—like its predecessor—combines historical fiction/romance with Native American legend and folklore, resulting in a story that is both provocative and terrifying.

Thompson’s amazing cast of characters is well-developed and realistic. They range from John Dyer—a man shunned by the settlers because of his Native background, to Ernest Hartman—a hell and brimstone preacher, to Sally Ann O’Shea—a spurned woman hell-bent on seeking revenge on all who cast her as a harlot and will stop at nothing to get it. As each character explores their surroundings—and oftentimes each other—it’s quite easy for readers to relate to the intensity of their personalities, dreams, and ambitions with Thompson providing a clear and definitive understanding of what drives them forward toward each of their fates.

Placing Thompson’s cast in the midst of the American wilderness, where the wild things roam, brings a sense of heightened danger and mystery to already brilliant, and oftentimes terrifying, plot line. “His Family’s Blood” is a great standalone tale, but combined with Book 1 of the Legend of the Family Dyer series, it has significantly greater impact.

History... Legend...Romance... Horror... This series has it all and stands as one of my all-time favorite reads. Just a side note—I do recommend both books for ages 17 and up due to violence and adult situations.

I love good HF book series and quickly became a fan of “Moll Dyer” books. Another aspect that I really appreciated was that both books can be easily read as stand-alones, however, I’d definitely recommend reading them as a series to enjoy it fully and get to know characters better. In book two, the plot line centers around John Dyer, Moll’s great-great-grandson, who inherited magical abilities from his ancestors together with something more sinister, which is following him. Soon, he encounters two women who will turn his whole life around: one, the local drunkard’s daughter, whom he starts teaching magic against his better judgment; with the second one - a reverend’s daughter - he falls in love. Only, a dark demon is unwittingly released and is out for blood, and who knows if John will be able to save his beloved one from the curse this time…
What always fascinates me about David Thompson’s writing is how wonderfully he blends history and supernatural, weaving a tale that is so riveting that it’s nearly impossible to put the book down. Also, his attention to detail and research are evident on every page and I felt like I was actually there, together with the characters, in the 18th century America, watching the events unravel with my own eyes. The dialogue was authentic and characters - real and multidimensional. If you love historical fiction with a bit of supernatural in it - this is your book! Highly recommended!

I love how the author uses history in this book. I was so happy with the use of historical references in the first book that I thought I might be disappointed by a not-as-good historic telling. I was wrong. I also loved Moll so much in book one that I was worried I might not enjoy her family as much. Again, I was wrong. Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for such an enthralling continuation of Molls life.

Once again the author has done a masterful job combining history and the supernatural. At every turn you feel inspired and betrayed by the nature of humans and their ability to ruin things for true love. A family legend and the ultimate fight of good versus evil, I can not wait for the next book in this series!

His Father's Blood is David Thompson's follow up to Sister Witch: The Life of Moll Dyer. Both books are excellent reads, historical fictions with elements of mysticism. The first novel brings magic in gradually, while this novel throws its readers into a world of spells, demons, and spirit animals from the beginning and keeps the fast pace going throughout.

John Dyer, Moll Dyer's great-great grandson, spent the first ten years of his life with his father, a shaman with a dark side. After his father died, John lived with his great grandfather until he was old enough to set out on his own. This background left John with a shaman's magic as well as a book of powerful spells he'd inherited from Moll. Yet his power seems more a curse than a blessing, specifically in the way it affects his relationship with the woman he loves.

His Father's Blood is a thrilling adventure, but also a beautiful romance. The strength of John and Ada's love is such that when Ada is separated from John, she uses the following words to describe her concept of Hell: “The room is locked, and just outside the door, you can hear the voices of everyone you’ve ever loved. You feel their happiness, you hear their laughter, but you cannot see them, or touch them, and they cannot see or hear or touch you.”

This is a great novel for anyone who enjoys magic realism.

More than a sequel, HIs Father's Blood is a continuing epic that somehow manages to exceed its antecedent. Thompson's deft perspective navigates good and evil, male and female perspectives, and the troubled waters that lie between Christianity and paganism as lightly as a bark canoe. A fascinating tale of love and sacrifice, this paranormal adventure will keep you on your toes till the last page. An escapist delight for readers of historical fiction and the supernatural alike.

a romance within

I loved Ada in this story. Thanks David for capturing her antics in the way she loves John. He is the great great grandson of Moll Dyer. This book was easy to follow and I loved the way John finished what he starts. He protects those he loves. Ada is put through so much.
If you like stories of olden times, as it is set in the past, you will love this book, the second book in the series. Great job David 👍🏼

If I could have given this a 4.5, that's actually my rating.

This is an interesting book based on legends found in southwestern west Virginia. I was particularly interested in this book because my father's family comes from the southwestern tip of Virginia, and I've heard many similar legends from my own kin in my many years on this earth. David Thompson takes the reader on a journey that's sometimes revenge-filled, sometimes loved-filled, sometimes gore-filled. It's a period piece, and the writing is solid. His characters are well-developed and come to life in the pages.

I had a few minor quibbles with the book, in that I was bothered by what I would consider overuse of the exclamation point, and a few modern-day expressions (e.g., saying someone was "pissed"--I think that's a modern-day idiom). Overall, however, the story moves rapidly, and I was wrapped up in trying to figure out what would happen next. I am not normally attracted to books that have spiritual or shape-shifting themes, but I had a difficult time putting this one down. I also don't read many books on Kindle, but this one may change that for me. I found myself reaching for my phone so that I could find out what happened next.

I enjoyed reading this book and would especially recommend it to people who like a genre that includes dark spiritual fiction, historical fiction, or, as my late father might say, fiction based on the tall tales of the mountains.

Once again, Thompson mastery of historical events coupled with engaging characters, spine-chilling events, and just the ‘right’ touch of romance, left me breathless. Native American folklore and dynamic subplots, we, once again, follow our protagonist as he tackles with ‘demons’ who have other plans in mind! A gripping tale-perfectly balanced and beautifully crafted!

Book 2 continues in the same dark, somber tone as book 1, but now we are introduced to Moll Dyers great-great grandson, John Dyer.

Just like Moll, the townsfolk have made him an outcast due his difference. Not only is he the kin to a famous witch, he is also half Indian.

Practiced in magic, John takes the compelling, yet misunderstoond, Sally Ann under his wing and teaches her the art of skinwalking. But Sally Ann has a thirst for both power and revenge and soon John learns that showing her the arts was a big mistake.

Very rarely do I find book two preceding the first book, but I do say, that happened here. I really enjoyed reading about John Dyer and the people he fought so hard to protect. A great story.
