I really liked MacKenna in first book. She was a strong heroine and not a doormat, cared deeply for her new "family". She seemed overall a good person. Nick was kinda jerk, manwhole etc, did not like him much, but he was okay. First half of the book (until Thanksgiving party) was good, 5 star read for me.
All started to go kinda weird with Nick cousin Roth and how he smelled (litterally) and how he wanted to take Mackenna out. Mackenna was pretty okay, at least she was not mean to his face, only talked to his back, how he stinks.. Okayy............

Then that party.. omg! What happend with those characters? It was cringe worthy!

Like.. girl, get down from your high horse! That was just rude and so disgusting to read, how she commented those other women, who were invited to that party by Grey. "Horseface", "plastic barbie" etc. I did not memorize those all those mean comments, but they were ones, that a self centered 16 year old would make, if someone lays eyes on her quarterback. So turn off.
Then she and Nich (hero) made out in bathroom, he mouthed "you're mine". Then he went and made out with "horseface", because the family can not know he likes Mackenna. Then Mackenna is mad, goes to bathroom, applies "hooker" makeup, lets her hair looose, undoes top buttons of her shirt etc (soooo 16y old! like other people at the party would not notice her change of outfit?!). And poor Mason, he was used, so Mackenna could make Nick jealous. What happend with that sweet caring heroine? She turned to a mean bitch who used other innocent people (she even thought, that she might lead Mason on, but did not care, because she MUST make Nick jealous and play stupid games). Later Nick also called that girl who he made out a "horseface". wtf.
And then they had wild secret sex in other people home. And there was NEVER any talk of condoms or birth control. Always raw bare sex. How does she not end up pregnant... what about manwhore diseases?
Punch of mean assholes. They deserve each other.

That party dropped book to 1 star level and i struggle to read on.. kinda high school feeling.

Last 5 pages where good. Nice cliffhanger, but not sure about buying last book.

Overall 2.5 stars

I received an ARC and I am so excited that I did. Let me tell you guys the angst is real with Kenna and Nick. JM writing is only better in this continuation of this suspenseful love affair. Nick and Kenna's story really builds and I could not put it down. I finished it way too fast and have had a bit of hangover. The build, the angst, the plot is real and it grows intense and you won't believe the ending. I'm so rooting for Kenna and Nick. Nick wants Kenna, but Kenna is too afraid to lose the family she's gained. Not to mention Felice who's like her sister. These two try to do the right thing, but doing the right thing is hard. And when two people are just meant to be together. Is there really any keeping them apart? Problem is with no one knowing their true feelings for each other everyone is unknowingly getting in their way.

Now this is a series and so there are cliffhangers, but this is a book you NEED to give a chance. It's worth it. And the first two are out already so there is that. The 3rd on its way shortly.

This book is the second one in the series. The first is Impelled. The writing is excellent, and the characters very deep. I am hooked! Lots of twists and turns. Love it!
