Draco and Hermione go on an exchange program to Beauxbatons Academy. They enter a rocky partnership to help each other make it through all of their classes; neither of them thinks falling in love will be part of the deal.
This is a Dramione fanfic I read about 20 years ago. (God, that felt weird to type) I was never much of a fanfic reader or a Dramione shipper, but I remember reading this novel-length fic and loving it.
Basically, Draco and Hermione apply and are both chosen to attend Beauxbatons in a semester exchange program. They are both appalled, but the distance from their respective social circles allow them to slowly bridge the gap between them. Hermione overestimated her fluency in Frech, so she is forced to ask Draco for help. Simultaneously, they're both trying and failing to ignore the sexual tension between them. This is a slow burn, PG-rated fic set between the events of the 4th and 5th book. It was written before Order of the Phoenix was published.
13-year-old me thought this was peak literature. And some aspects I think do hold up. Like, for the longest time I thought that the wand making lore of this fic was canon. It wasn't until I listened to the 7 HP audiobooks years ago that I realized this fic had permanently wired itself into my HP memories.
That being said, reading it as a 30-something adult, I find it slow and boring. I just can't find it in me to finish it. Don't get me wrong: it's nice to stumble upon this after so many years. I read this back in the days of the Coloured Grey archive of Contra Veritas, arguably the best Harry Potter fan site of the mid-2000s. Really brought back the memories of being a kid hanging out in these fan sites while anxiously waiting for Book 5 to come out. This holds a special place in my heart for the nostalgia factor. But as a piece of writing I look forward to reading on my spare time? No, it does not hold up quite as much.
