This is a brilliant guide for women returning to work after their career breaks or even for those planning to go on one. As someone who’s been on a very long one (7 years!), it was motivating to read that many women went back to jobs they didn’t do before and some after 5-12 years career break. It was also reassuring to read that this was a relative norm among women and taking time out to raise children isn’t the setback it’s perceived to be as long as there’s a strategy in place DURING the break – playing the long game is definitely one of the advised aspects of this book.

Never at any point while reading did I feel that the authors derided women (or anyone) for taking time out from work but rather they offer strategies on how to get back in, if you want to, and how to build up skills when away, cultivating an online and offline network to keep your skills sharp and in touch and, when you’re ready, how to apply and negotiate part-time work. Turns out most jobs we want will never be advertised as part-time but this book teaches you how to negotiate them down to 3-4 days a week so that you can have balance and love work.

What I really love about this book is that there’s no polarisation. It is absolutely focused on women who want to return to work and so it doesn’t offer tips on how to juggle home life with work. But it doesn’t have to because it’s about the process of getting your career back on track and it addresses the things that matter to its target audience by tackling them head on. There’s no message of “women can have it all” (what does that even mean?) nor does it tell women to be stay at home mums if a job isn’t working out for them.

This is a reference book to dip in and out of with checklists, strategies and tables. It’s a handbook to get you organised. And the best part? There is a Facebook group to accompany this which is already proving to be fantastic. I can’t wait to use She's Back when the time comes.

I mean, there is not much else to say about this book other than it it absolutely fantastic. Just to see such an important topic being brought to the forefront was enough to make me smile.

Just because the title says that this book is for women returning to the workplace, it doesn’t mean that all women can’t benefit from it. That couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many things I learned from reading She’s Back, including:

Women have it damn hard returning to work
Skills I’ve learned in every day life (how to run a household budget, juggle responsibilities, etc.) can all be used to sell myself in an interview
It can be easier than first imagined to change careers once you know how to sell your skills
Networking is key
There are some amazing women out there who have set up wonderful organizations that help women return to the workplace
And, if I doubted that the above things can help and provide pathways for women to return not only to the workplace, but to sometimes new and even better positions they had in the past, the real life examples included in the book prove that to me.

Now, my review might make it seem like the book sets up the reader to believe that re-entry into the workforce is easy. It’s not, and She’s Back shows that. Not all the stories included women who got a job, and the position they wanted, right off the bat. Some women were job hunting and/or working in jobs that weren’t their ideal for some time before their dream job was found. These stories were again testament to the fact that the advice in this book works.

And besides all that, She’s Back does the very important job of highlighting just how difficult it can be for women to return to work. If you don’t read this book for anything else, read it for that.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
