I love this series, but the volumes are getting more and more nonsensical as they go on and I'm sad. It almost feels like the series is going on a lil too long :c

As summer arrives, Sheffield University breaks up and, after two years, so do our three studenteers! Susan and Daisy are swanning off to live with their beloveds leaving poor single Esther all alone – who will take her in? Enter: lovesick Ed Gemmell, secretly pining for the goth princess this whole time, who may have the answer: his place! Will he have the guts to suggest it? Bah, who needs guts when you’ve got booze! Except a near-deadly night on the lash threatens to thwart the carefully laid plans of micemen!

Giant Days is my dependably good comics rock. And yet… I’m slightly fallen of crest to say that Volume 9 is the first book in the series I haven’t totally loved as much as Ed does Esther. I still enjoyed it a lot but usually I get that weird, fuzzy sensation of joy at reading transcendence itself and this time something was missing.

I suspect ‘twas the unsatisfying way writer John Allison looked like he was finally addressing Esther/Ed’s will they/won’t they relationship only to quickly back away from barely developing it – you teaseth too much, Mr Allison! And, because that takes up much of the book, there’s not a whole lot else happening, so that could be why it feels oddly insubstantial.

Volume 9 is still pretty tops though. Ed’s face when Esther half-jokingly suggested they live together was the funniest thing I’ve seen all year! I loved the visuals of the student vultures lusting after the girls’ former house and Ed hallucinating living with Dean for another year – artist Max Sarin absolutely kills it with the art as per ush.

An Esther-Mite materialises temporarily in the form of Lottie, the little sister of one of Esther’s mates, prompting Susan and Daisy to don their auntie hats and endure her painful kiddie truth bombs. I get the feeling that Lottie is a carryover from Allison’s other series, Bad Machinery, though I only read the first book of that title – it wasn’t for me – so I can’t say for sure. Esther and Ed’s pub crawl was great, as was the reveal of their secret origins, and Daisy continues to grow beautifully as a character. Allison’s writing sparkles with dry wit and genial humour and Sarin’s art is perfection, page after page - they is absolutely one of the finest creative teams in all of comicsdom eva!

Giant Days, Volume 9 surprisingly isn’t the home-run I’ve come to expect from this series though it’s another delightfully charming read. Nine books in and Giant Days remains a quality title but it might be starting to flag.

The Break Issue: Summer Break, Breaking Up, Breaking Bones.

Volume nine about the adorable bffs Esther, Susan and Daisy takes place in the summer after year two, Sheffield U, and they will no longer live together because Susan and Daisy are pairing up with partners. Though there’s a break-up (not I will spoil it!), so that might factor in. Esther doesn’t have anyone to live with, so when out on a ten pub crawl (yes, one pint per pub, do the math!) with Ed Gemmell he (finally, but drunkenly) reveals what we have known all along, that he had secretly been in love with her. But within minutes of this admission, the drunk Ed goes manic, climbs a wall and breaks his leg! Cliffhanger: Ed has to move back home because of the leg, so can a relationship even begin, even if Esther agrees to try it? Do they both fully recall what was admitted by Ed? Is this just a tease, John Allison??!

Max Sarin is awesome and captures a kicky vibe to match the madcap joking fun story Allison continues. A great creative team! Aside from the break-up and (especially) the Ed admission, this isn’t the most memorable volume, but trust me, I will read the next one as soon as it comes out. Highly recommended series if you just want to have fun!!

I feel like this series just gets nearer and dearer to my heart with every single volume, and right now, I'm just so sad that I've finally reached the point where I have to wait on a new volume! 😭 I need more time with my little college babies.

There are two moments in particular that really made this volume shine, but they were both kind of shocking (or more like "finally!") moments that I don't want to spoil for anyone. That said, if you've read this volume:
1) HOW PRECIOUS AND PITIFUL WAS THAT CONFESSION
2) They're gone! They're finally gone!

Oh, and on a not-spoiler-y note: how precious and flawless is Lottie?!

As we all most likely know by now, I absolutely love this series and the fact that I am almost caught up breaks my heart because I want more! I would read these forever and forever. I have already begun collecting them because I would like to own them all. The characters in Giant Days just feel like home in a way for me. I really do not want to say a ton about what happens in this issue because it is so far along in the series but most libraries have these volumes available via Hoopla or Libby if you have access to those.

SPOILERS AHEAD
In this volume we see our trio struggling with change. The end of the second year is coming and our three main characters are planning to move out of their house and away from one another. Leaving one of the girls to either find new roommates or a whole new situation. We also deal with the issue of breakups and self-sacrifice. One of our main characters breaks up with her partner (she has had this partner for a few issues now and I did not really think this was the perfect partner for her, so I was glad for this new phase). I was also a little sad for the self-sacrifice of one of our characters because I felt that things could have gone in a much different way. I still relate to the things the girls are going through and I love these stories maybe now more than ever. I can not wait to jump into volume ten! I gave this volume five stars on Goodreads!

Re-read
Hi Again!

I have been diving back into graphic novels and Giant Days specifically, a lot recently. I have already reviewed this volume and all the other volumes in the past, as this series is a re-read for me. I will still mark this as a spoiler-filled review, but I am going to keep things very short since we are at volume 9 (if you are interested in the series, I highly recommend giving it a try). I often read them on Hoopla, but I also own copies, and I love getting the chance to re-read and spend time in a favorite place with great characters.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This volume of the series really touches on a big life point that many experience (sometimes in a different way). When you leave home and have roommates, and become friends, there comes a time when you may decide to get your own place, and we see the three best friends start to really struggle with that. We have seen them each experience so much growth and change, but I hate it when they all consider breaking up. I know from having read the series in the past, they do eventually do this, so Susan and McGraw can live together, but I love seeing all the fun and chaos of the group all together. But the times are changing for the group, and I have already started to dive into the next volume.

I didn’t enjoy this volume quite as much as the others although it did have some pretty great moments! It just felt tinged with sadness compared to other issues, I can feel it all coming to an end and I’m dreading it. I’ve really come to love this series! There were some moments in this one that have me excited to see what comes in the next volume, it’s sure to be a wild one with how it’s being set up!

Year two of the trio's second year at university has come to an end and they are already growing into the incredible and independent women they will soon become. I really loved seeing the evolution of their characters, over the issues collected here, as well as more of a focus on my favourite side character, Ed Gemmell.

I loved seeing Esther and Ed's big night out, I find their friendship very entertaining and I cannot wait to see how things evolve between the two of them. I know things are going to be different in the girls' final year at university, with them not living together, but I'm sure their friendship can overcome basically anything at this point!

A consistently entertaining series hits a peak as the characters reach the end of their second year of college and the writer shakes up the status quo in their relationships and living arrangements. Humorous, sexy, romantic and just purely delightful.

This was close enough to perfect that I’m going with the full five stars. Giant Days has become a complete comfort read for me. The characters and situations are hilarious and also pure joy at the same time, even when they’re being outright tortured, LOL.

It reads as such a simple array of experiences for these college girls but it’s all so relatable and so genuine. I love that they included an LGBT character in a main storyline and that her relationship with her girlfriend is imperfect.

In fact, relationship mishaps are a theme in the series, both within friendships and romance. When you get down to it life is basically interactions with people and how we deal with all of it. Giant Days is a hilarious, cringeworthy, beautiful mirror of that.

Ohhh. I love these girls so much, more and more in each installment if that is possible. I've grown fond of them since volume 1. Esther,Daisy and Susan are growing up and it is a pleasure to accompany them in the path to adulthood. Sometimes they crack me up, sometimes I see myself reflected :) but I just want to protect them (and poor sweet Ed too)all the time...The only one who I find overconfident enough is McGraw. This is the end of their second year, a lot of things have changed and a lot more are waiting for them. I don't want Giant Days to be over.

Another great volume in this series. Lots of changes for the group in this one and I'm definitely excited to see how next year is going to go after all the events here. Also, and I KNOW this is horrible, but Esther's story about her teacher reminds me of the math teacher we terrorized in 6th grade until she left our school literally 3/4ths of the way through her FIRST YEAR of teaching. Yeah, not proud of that as an adult but as a 12 year old who hated math it seemed pretty great -_-;

This is the end of second year for college of our trio and they are struggling with change. Susan and Daisy are planning to live with their partners leaving Esther all alone.
My favorite part was Esther and Ed's big night out where they drink at ten pubs.

Follows the girls through the end of year two as they try to figure out where they're going to live in the next year and understand their adult relationships.

I absolutely loved this volume, but it wasn't as amazing as the first couple ones. Despite some very real emotions (and some very big reveals), there was so much going on that it felt very safe. The main highlight was little Lottie, who was, indeed, Esther Concentrated, and holy hell what a delight to read.

I'm looking forward to the next issues and I hope that year 3 brings a lot of new journeys and experiences for my favorite university students.

I'M SO DAMN MAD. THAT ending. I'm livid!
End of year two and I don't want it to end, just one more year with the girls, but damn, that ending was cold.
I like seeing the growth from year one to two. Esther as a good student, living the single life, Susan as a responsible adult starting a new chapter with McGraw, Daisy being the one with self-doubt and spiralling out. The progression feels so natural too, so well-written.

This volume also tells us a little of Ed's backstory, and a bit of Esther too. There's a cute, super savagely honest little visit and some accidents happen, some hearts are broken, it's a rather jarring beginning of summer break, but at least the girls' friendship is stronger than ever.

It's not the best volume of the series, but it's still solid fun. Now, 19 issues to go!

I'm honestly surprised with how much I loved this one! Vol 8 was very disappointing to me and I had second thoughts on carrying on, but I'm so glad I did! Vol 9 reminded me of why I love this series in the first place.

I didn't really how lacking these have been of Ed content until this one but it made me really happy to see him back on the forefront. Also, Daisy deserves the world and I'll personally fight anyone who hurts her in the next volume regardless of whether or not they're elderly.

As most of the previous installments in this series, Giant Days, Vol. 9 is a fun, light, and quick read. As usually, I liked it but I didn't love it.

First of all, the friendship between Esther, Susan, and Daisy feels different. It just seems to me that the girls don't care about each other the same.

Also, the events in this volume are so mundane (everyday student life, relationship struggles) that there is not much happening.

As for the over expressive manga-ish artwork, I grew to like it. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Just what I needed after this lousiest of days. The main problem is that I am now out of new Giant Days volumes for a while so I’m not sure what to do with myself. I might have to go back to the beginning or try rereading Library Wars.

This is one of my favorite volumes yet! For me, longer comic series tend to vary in quality as the volumes go on, but Giant Days has been consistently good for me and I just keep loving it more and more.

This volume was amazing. I laughed out loud and I loved how character dynamics played out in this volume.

I would gladly read these FOR YEARS if I had the opportunity. Highly recommended!
