Jesus Christ: His Life and Teaching, Vol. 1

Rate this book
It has been said that Jesus Christ is always actual, and at the same time always anticipating actuality. This is something that Metropolitan Hilarion has made abundantly clear in his monumental six-volume study. As he observes, throughout history there has never been a person about whom so much has been written; and yet the Metropolitan has himself found many new ways to restate, in fresh and vivid terms, the ancient truths about the Savior. This is a remarkable study that deserves to be read with close attention.

The book is long (and only the first part of a 6 part series!) and requires one to pay attention to its detail, but it is a treasurer of information about how the Orthodox Church reads the Gospel. Met Hilarion deals with many of the common issues raised by scholars or debated by various modern Christian traditions regarding interpretation. Sometimes he (surprisingly) agrees with scholars, sometimes he explains why the traditional understanding stands up despite modern scholarship. He is not afraid to admit there are contradictions and discrepancies in the text. He does more or less harmonize the 4 Gospels, but acknowledges this cannot always be done. For the Orthodox reader already familiar with some of the modern scholarly arguments, this book will be invaluable for navigating through tradition and scholarship.

This book should be a part of catechetical instruction for all Christians. The overall layout brought clarity in a way I haven't in other books about Jesus.

The reason I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5:
1. It needed some better editing. There were a few parts when the writing lacked clarity.
2. I was frustrated that the publishers decided to make the book so large that it couldn't really be held in one hand in the way that one reads a book. Use narrower margins, smaller print, or far fewer pictures.

I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.
