"That which doesn't kill me is going to wish it had."
A new adventure for fans of LitRPG and Gamelit.
Do you love hunting monsters? Dark worlds? Swords and Sorcery?
Alex is a Glitch Hunter, member of a house of monster hunters that possess mysterious bracers allowing them to see the world with the interface of a video game. Even with the edge that offers most Glitch Hunters die young, thrown by quests into areas of deadly conflict. Alex's first quest draws him to a city with a grisly past, and unless he can discern truth from lies in time an even darker future.
I dont usually write review but here I go. Really loved the book it's just a simple monster hunter read. Set in a rather world of it's own with plenty of similarities to the middle ages, and common monster themes with a new mix of unique creatures. I imagine it is actually very similar to that of the world of the Witcher series which is another reason I really like this book, and hope to more.
Character were smartly written and each unique enough not to be forgotten and their interactions are funny and made me chuckle.
Overall I like the book it's written like a monsterhunter game where the protagonists maxed out charisma and perception stat, and didn't make the good guy choice all the time but really just tried to get laid.
This is not for children! I just say I really enjoyed reading this book. Stayed up all night to finish it in one go. I want more, but only if follow up books are this long or longer. I did find a handful of errors scattered throughout this book that need fixing. I recommend this book.
I really wanted to like this book. The world building is fantastic! The weapon elements and utilities are awesome. The enemies encountered are unique a very well thought out. I utterly hate two of the main characters. Yasmin and Alex. Sigh. These two are what stops this series from being five stars imho. Yasmin, for being the "mentor", she needs to get it through her head that she's responsible for telling the new recruits what they need to survive. She does show them how to use their weapons, but when it comes to better understanding of the world around them, she can't be bothered or she's missing. Alex. Oh Alex. This dude can't stop thinking with his d*** for five minutes. Seriously. He literally flirts and tries to bang, any and everyone with a skirt! He completely ignores sound advice, that would otherwise get him killed or put him in a situation where he can be manipulated. AND. IT. DOES. HAPPEN!!!!! I could not get into this series because of Alex (who the series is centered around). You're in a world, where people and monsters are trying to kill you, a little healthy suspicion and vigilance goes a long way.
Not bad. The story was good, though it was probably drawn out a bit longer than necessary. I would like to see more books in this universe, though I'd like to see more world building, since we didn't get to see very much of the world in this book, I kind of like the unorthodox methods the main character uses to solve his problems, though I'm sure most of those decisions are going to come back to bite him, though it'd be interesting to see future volumes where they actually don't do so instead, that would be some creative writing to be sure. :) Overall, this was a good story, and those liking the gamelit genre will probably like this one, though since it's a bit top heavy on politics, it may not appeal to all readers. Still, the adventure is a good tale, and most folks should get at least some enjoyment out of it.
The book reads like ghetto Witcher. This book threads a fine line, being heavily, and I do mean heavily inspired by the universe in "The Witcher" game, which itself is an adaptation of the books by Andrzej Sapkowski.
Investigations, taking contracts for money, being sterile, the houses ( here we have bat, originals we had wolf), being known for being womanizers, the alchemy angle/potions and vials, minor magic abilities. It's all there.
The main characters are some of the most annoying human beings, and Alex, one of them, is a perversion of Gerald, the main character in the original series. The womanizing aspect is taken to such an extreme, and in so much bad taste, that by itself, it ruins the book. The cliche plot, the stunted dialogue, the forgettable side characters.
The worldbuilding is good, and the setup is more of a classic fantasy than you'd expect, but the mix gels well. "Glitch" is basically a slang for "unnatural", the result of corruption by various otherworld energies. And of course the titular Glitch hunters are Glitch themselves, humans that have been remade into supernatural stalkers.
The game mechanics intrude lightly, and having something more out of a Diablo than the usual MMORPG fare makes for an interesting read. The end notes are a bit of unnecessary, though (unless you haven't been paying attention).
Overall, much better than The Laboratory series, I think.
I’ve never seen a LitRPG world so real and visceral. Assuming such a world was real, the monsters and PCs become the glitches in the fabric of reality, and must be handled appropriately. When the characters are interesting and written well, that makes for a fun read. When you add really fresh and thoughtful world mechanics then you have something amazing and worth reading slowly, to savor it all.
Love the characters (especially Jess and Ryn), love the world, love the story, love the editing. Truly excellent work. Highly recommended.
Strangely built lit-rpg, about "glitch" which are variations of corruption similar to magic the gathering cards, only without referencing them directly. The hero starts out a blank slate, builds up his skillset, sleeps with several women, and eventually figures out the big-bad and works to defeat it. There are some surprises, and its not all gaslit warnings. I think its a fine fantasy RPG story, provided you can deal with the numbers being cited through the story, something I consider a weakness of LitRPG but part of the genre.
What I enjoyed so much about this story was that you get a main character that gains tons of experience and power, and at the same time suffers consequences for things.
It also has a fascinating dialogue on what it means to be human. So many stories make attempts at this, but this story really settles it. It makes a compelling argument to try and see monsters as people.
The monsters are realistically vile at times, and humane at others. It made a lot of sense the way it was written.
I read this one after reading his Laboratory books. Those books are good, but this one is way better. The story in glitch hunter is engaging and complex. The writing quality is very high, like the author likes this story way more than the laboratory books. Read this book.
Litrpg sleeper that I somehow missed last year. Fresh. Fun. I could read books like this all week. Arguably the Skylar Grant should have promoted this book and written at least a trilogy because in my opinion this is the kind of book that promotes a reading audience.
It gets a bit sexually explicit, but not in a way that overwhelms the story or annoys. If that doesn't bother you, read it. The only disappointment you'll find is that there isn't a sequel (yet).
If you like grimdark that isn't cliche, this book is for you. If you like a lot of sex that isn't cliche, this book is for you. Ending was somewhat anticlimactic but it felt right anyway.
This is a gamelit with a unique combination of tropes and themes. I'd highly recommend to fans of the genre. I will definitely be checking out the authors other works while I wait for book two.
This book was adventurous and exciting till the very end ! If you like magic and power-ups. and strange fantasy creatures, Swords and sorcery ,stop looking and read this book. You will not be let down. Can't wait for the next book!!!!
Really had fun with this book. Not what I expected, but better. Characters that are morally layered and complex, humor, action and a good plot. Really want this series to continue!
