I’ve been reading this series (slowly) for years now, and I must say I feel like these stories are getting better as they go along.

Book six (Daniel's Mate) ended with the dramatic intro to a small military group of werewolves who were hurt, distressed, and seeking shelter in Declan’s Smooth Rock Falls pack. This story begins even earlier than that, chronicling the harrowing events that these soldiers experienced in their desperate fight for survival, as they made their way from the depths of the Congo all the way to Canada where they were promised sanctuary in Declan’s diverse shifter pack.

MCs Gunny and Payton have been (covertly) together for years, fighting side by side on countless life-threatening missions, in service of their country. But when Gunny, Pay, and their close-knit team realise they are being hunted in the jungle and that a larger conspiracy to out shifters globally is afoot, they are resigned to the fact that they must go AWOL in order to survive.

With their Colonel kidnapped and Payton seriously injured and unable to shift into his wolf form to heal, getting to Canada and to the safety of the Smooth Rock Falls pack becomes the team’s number one mission. There they find the home they’ve always needed, beginning to heal, not only physically but mentally, from the terrors they’ve faced over their years in combat.

Gunny and Payton love one another from the get-go, but now that they are safe and finally settling into a military free life, they have some major life choices to make before they can officially mate and get their HEA. Saving their Colonel and stopping the larger discovery of shifters also serves as a temporary rock block in their love story, but with the support of their new pack and their fellow team members, Gunny and Payton are able to save the day and keep their romance alive.

This was easily the most action-packed story of the series (thus far). All the combat scenes and guerrilla warfare moments were fairly intense, even becoming violent and squeamish, at least for me, particularly when dealing with a seriously injured Payton in the first half of the story. The fact that this story begins and ends with a fair amount of military action gave the whole thing a more serious feel and even an overall faster pace than its predecessors, which were mostly just set in the small town where the Smooth Rock Falls pack resides. I quite liked this change of pace, always appreciating a bit more action and high-stakes drama in my shifter reads.

I really liked Payton and Gunny as a couple, too, which maybe came as a teeny bit of a surprise because I usually don’t swoon over couples that are already well-established when their story begins. They were just really lovely together. Yes, they experienced a few snags in their romance, but I kind of understood the complex feelings and hesitancy involved in their decision to become officially mated.

I also enjoyed the part of the book that was set back in Smooth Rock Falls. It was calmer reading and I loved seeing many of the past characters making appearances, showing them happy and loved up in their respective mated pairs.

I honestly hope this isn’t the end for this series, but I take solace in the fact that its sister series (Fraser Lake Pack) has a follow-on story that features the Colonel and Nathan (the hacker kid who helped find the kidnapped shifters).

This was different read than the rest of the series, more of military and mission/ rescue than the actual pack feel. In a sense they were their own small pack on missions. I am glad they made it to Declan's pack but the actual mating would have been nice to read.

M/M shifter heat in an elite military unit woven into the Pack Mates setting

(with a harsh but stunning dose of current geopolitics)

As I waded through the first section of this latest story in the Pack Mates series, I thought this might be the least enjoyable installment for me, as it seemed so out of place with the other entries. However, the middle and end of the book did a good job of weaving this very different (an "out of left field" feeling for me) backstory into the Pack Mates universe. Even so, I still probably would have only given this a high three star or low four star rating, but I found the geopolitical aspect to be just too damn nervy (on the author's part), unnerving (as it might hit too close to something really happening now), and so extremely contemporaneous, resulting in me simply being blown away by its inclusion in a m/m shifter romance. The mere fact that an author wove such an extremely sinister but possibly "really happening now" geopolitical development into the series grabbed me by the balls and won't let go.

I'm a huge fan of the Pack Mates gay/male-male shifter stories, but this one surprised me, eventually in a very positive way. The first several chapters, in particular, center on a gritty and dangerous military mission that was a bit shocking when inserted into this series, but once I overcame the surprise, it worked well for me. The second half of the book had much more of a familiar Pack Mates feel, although the elite military angle is one unique aspect that remained important throughout the story.

I'm also a huge fan of this author's ability to write a sizzling scene, and this installment did not disappoint me on that end. As usual, I find the various heated scenes cover a nice range from lightly sizzling and satisfying to rather scorching (and also very reciprocal between the pair). While I often skip explicit scenes in many adult romances, the manner in which this author weaves them into the story and then carries through on the mechanics and emotions just works very well for me, and keeps me riveted to the pages (even/especially during the explicit heat).

Regarding the geopolitics, I believe the general plotline has been telegraphed from previous installments, so I don't know how many of the details were pre-planned or were consciously incorporated by the author based on current events. In any case, to me they represent the worst-case-scenario of recent developments - not necessarily reflective of what really has happened over the past year, but much, much, more a realistic possibility than I had ever imagined in my lifetime.

I believe this could be read just fine as a standalone. There is a wide array of appearances from secondary, helping characters from earlier Pack Mates books who make brief appearances, but for the most part their key roles are explained (although the roles of these characters are probably more meaningful and easier to subsume into the story for those who have read the previous books).

3.5 stars for the standard Pack Mates plot elements
4 stars for the gritty/dangerous military mission beginning
4.5 stars for the heat
5+ stars for the (purposeful or not) allusions to possibly very real geopolitical threats

4.25 stars rounded up for the author's nerve (balls!) at (consciously or not) tackling these issues

The military parts of this book bored me. We were just dropped into the middle of this military group and I guess it was supposed to be exciting and all, but I just didn’t care about the unit or the mission. The people in the group grew on me after awhile and I did enjoy the book more once they reached Declan’s pack. It was really good to visit these individual’s again. Especially Quinn. It made me want to read the first book in the series again.

Then there was Gunny. He drove me crazy throughout most of the book. He was all lovey dovey while in the jungle, but once they reached the pack, he gave Payton the cold shoulder. I really couldn’t understand his fears and reluctance. Luckily for him Pay grew to have patience because Gunny really put him through the wringer.

Overall, I did enjoy parts of the story and will continue to read the series. This installment just wasn’t all that great.

I still liked this story, but it didn't feel as cohesive as others in the story. I wanted more of an explanation in places and the ending felt a bit rushed in the wrap up withe everything that had lead up to the potential reveal of werewolves to the world. I liked Gunny and Pay together though. Gunny was really sweet in his worries about Payton. Of course he was being silly with his stupid backing away from his mate out of misguided altruism.

My biggest disappointment with this book was that it didn't feel like it really got into any one particular part, but instead kind of bounced along all the highlights necessary to cover a lot of plot in a very short book. Between the military issues, the new pack, the other soldiers the escaped with, the kidnapping of the Colonel, the rescue of said Colonel, all the changes and PTSD issues, the threat of the reveal of all werewolves, not to mention our love story...I just wanted something to be given some depth of time. While I enjoyed being back in this world I just kept hoping for more.

I absolutely adore this series and I was so psyched to see this new addition! I love seeing all the other MCs from previous books and seeing them interact with new characters.

I wasn’t crazy about this story. I didn’t understand Gunny’s reluctance or Pay’s and it felt like an artificial hurdle for these guys to overcome. There was plenty of external crises for these guys to struggle against, so I wasn’t sure they needed the personal struggle in addition.

The writing is good as are the characters and world-building. We get some lovely feelz and a nice HEA as well as some nice smexy times.

The other books in this series are on my favorite list and all 5 star reads, so a 4 means I didn’t love this as much as them, but it’s still quite a good book!

Recommended to fans of the series, the author and shifter romances. (Can be read as a standalone I think.)

Rescue ~ in more ways than one

Rescue is a MM romance. Rescue is about a shifter military unit set among the horrors of war, abandoned by their country, ambushed, and having to make their way home with a gravely injured packmate. Interspersed in this story is the romance of Pay and Gunny, two members of the unit. Not having read any of the previous books in the series, I read this as a stand-alone, and it was just fine. This book was ranked under Gay Fiction, but also falls into the paranormal romance & military genres. FYI, there is sex and violence.

Two Army wolf shifters who are mates have trouble with their relationship. I didn't quite understand why one resisted. The only scenes I enjoyed took place in the pack in Canada. The African combat scenes were not appealing to me.
Typos: uniformed for uniform, unnecessary comma following "of course."

Just recently realized this book was available. I was so happy to finally get some more story about Dan Carter's military family. I did not even realize this book came out not long after Mine to Keep from the Fraser Pack series.

A struggle to read

I like the fact that the story revolved around a couple already into each other. But the reason the mc becomes distant towards the other is meh. It doesn't make sense after everything you brushed aside just to be with the one you care for.
