How much would you sacrifice to regain your honor? After ex-football star, Matt Mathison, allows a career-ending injury to send him to the far country, the prodigal wants to come home and regain his honor. But Matt returns with an assassin on his trail. When he encounters a young woman with secrets, a woman he is drawn to and who needs him, he must choose between helping her or endangering her. Miranda (Randi) Richards, a young meteorologist, takes a job in a remote area near the Olympic National Park to nurse her wounds after her parents brutally disowned her when she converted to Christianity at college. When Randi, a world-class, middle-distance runner literally runs into Matt on a park trail, she believes she's found someone who can help heal her heart. But she learns Matt has secrets that threaten both her heart and her life. No Safe Place is an action-filled, romantic-suspense story that races from the scenic beaches of the Olympic National Park to the beauty of Lake Chelan in Central Washington State, a story of courage, honor, faith and love.
H L Wegley's stories are always Christian and always inspirational, with a climate of suspense and a forecast of stormy weather. What else would you expect from a Meteorologist?

I really have liked this author's previous book but didn't care for this one so I don't expect to read the rest of this series. The first few chapters were filled with cliché's. The characters meet, are in love in about 3 days, get chased by a Mexican Cartel hit man. They run, then cars are flying around, the FBI put them in a safe house, the hit man finds them. And so it went. Just not believable. I hate to write a bad review but I felt this story was possibly rushed to the publisher. It could have used better planning to help me believe in these characters.
No Safe Place, book one of Witness Protection series by H.L. Wegley has once again taken me on a trip that's full of suspense and never slowed my will to keep those pages turning. Matt, ex-football dude, and Randi, meteorologist, are suddenly face to face in a run for their life. Not having ever met, the chances of survival and ability to read each other could have been challenging. Thankfully, they got to know each other quickly! Love the premise of the story and how Wegley was able to keep me on the edge of my seat. Looking forward to the next book in this series. I was gifted a copy of this book by the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own.
This is an action packed book that will have you on the edge of your seat from the very first pages.
I enjoyed the suspense and wondering what would happen next.
I did feel the romance was a bit quick, thinking about marriage after knowing each other two days. That part of the story really didn’t resonate with me.
I did like wondering what would happen with Matt when he went to the police with his story. Even though it was the right thing to do I didn’t want him to do it. So that kept things interesting.
A copy of this book was given to me by the author. All opinions are my own.
Deb’s Dozen: A chance collision while running leads to a dangerous happily ever after.
I love good romantic suspense, and H. L. Wegley never disappoints. No Safe Place, a newly published, “old” novel is no exception.
Matt Mathieson is running for his life. While hiding out from a dangerous drug cartel in the Pacific Northwest, he hears rapid footsteps coming up behind him and assumes they’ve found him, even here. Hidden along the path, he jumps out and tackles the runner just hard enough to knock her on her backside in the mud. From this abrupt beginning flows the often bumpy romance of Matt and Randi Richards, a young meteorologist, who also happens to be a middle-distance runner.
This novel has everything you want in a book—good guys, evil villains, heroic cops, suspense, danger, love, beautiful setting, Grand Jury, Witness Protection Program. What more could a romantic suspense lover want? Wegley says he wrote this story during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2013. In between then and now, he’s published his outstanding Against All Enemies series. No Safe Place is book number one in his new Witness Protectionseries.
You’ll want to catch up on Wegley if you’ve not read him yet. He writes believable suspense with strong male and female protagonists. The novels are the kind you need to start early in the day or you’ll be up all night reading. I would rate No Safe Place a strong four stars!
H. L. Wegley is a retired Air Force intelligence analyst and a weather officer. He also worked as a research scientist and wrote computing systems for Boeing. He “retired” with his wife near Seattle. Wegley is an award-winning writer of high-action, romantic-suspense novels and inspirational thrillers.
The author gifted me with a copy of No Safe Place, but I was in no way obligated to write a review.
Everyone has heard of a girl getting swept off her feet by some guy. Often that is not a good thing, but it works out well in some cases. In the opening pages of this story, that literally happens to the leading lady. Well, maybe swept off her feet is a bit of an understatement. More correctly, Matt tackled Randi because he thought she was someone with ulterior motives chasing him down a trail in Olympic National Park. What a surprise when he realizes his mistake. At that point, most women would have gotten away from there as quickly as possible and never looked back. Fortunately for the story, she did not do that, thus making for a much more lively and enjoyable book. The suspense and action kept me so engrossed that I lost track of time. Matt and Randi both believed in God and sought to live for Him, but they also had struggles, which is common for all of us, although few of us have struggles of the magnitude that Matt had, particularly as it related to his past. Between the faith struggles, the intensity of their situation, and some romance, I spent some pleasurable time reading this story. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
They are drawn together like a moth to the flame. He keeps trying to stay away but can't. She can't stop thinking of him. All it took was one touch. When things go belly up he's know carrying more guilt about what got them there and now add to it that she's now involved. She's got to guard her heart because although she knows the God they serve wouldn't let him carry the guilt. He's got to learn that God's in control and let go let God. A message we all need at various times in life added in with a great story with plenty of suspense and action. This author doesn't preach his message he lets his characters actions and beliefs be delivered through actions. The fact that this author does it in a manner where it's delivered by actions means we have a clean read that even talks about chaperones because they are single. I love that. It's a great read that incorporates christian behavior and beliefs without sending mixed messages or preaching. I do like this authors style of delivery as well. While he does set the scenery he doesn't waste words or try to fluff it up. These are standalone reads so even if you read them out of order you won't be confused.
NO SAFE PLACE by H L Wegley. This is a new series “Witness Protection “ his books have a powerful message to them. Taking readers into the heart and soul of the people in his stories. Matt surprised he hasn’t been gunned down by now, reflecting that is what he did deserve. Another runner, he tackles, and meets Randi, they both have there reasons for being out here in no man’s land. The pastor encourages Matt to seek those out that he had wronged even if it meant prison. With Randi, it may mean the end of a relationship, before it could begin, once he told her of his sordid past. The questions are many about these two, and we have been given a rich plot to follow of the whys and how will it end. Will they have gained or lost everything. To go into witness protection is not easy for anyone, if there was the two of them together. Is it possible. Readers will once again love this new series and await the next one.
To be honest, when I first started this book, I was a bit skeptical. It was written by a man. Not that I'm a man hater... Indeed, my husband is one of God's most magnificent gifts in my life.... However, men and women do think differently. With that in mind, would guest book hold my attention? Would it have romance that would warm my heart? Would it have challenging Faith messages that would touch my soul? Would it uphold to my standards of Purity and honoring God? As I am very careful about what I read....
Well, I must say that not only was this book everything positive that I wanted, but it was so hard to put down that I barely got any sleep last night and I've been sitting and reading it all the way through for hours.
This book has suspense, intrigue, sweet romance, and a very strong Christian message. I can't wait to read the next one! In fact I'm heading that way now.
Read this book. You will not be sorry that you did!
Can Matt and Randi escape the clutches of the cartel?
Randi is a beautiful redhead who loves to run especially through the forest and beach area. Matt is on the run from the cartel that he worked for. Matt and Randi meet on the trail and their is instant chemistry. Matt would really like to get to know Randi better but is afraid it will put her life in danger. This is a great story of learning to trust in each other but to also accept the gifts that God freely gives. With the FBI, marshals and police officers will Randi and Matt be able to get ahead of the Tijuana Cartel and its crazy assistant to the boss that is always hot on their tail. I really enjoyed this first book in the series. I also enjoyed in the authors notes how he explained about the area and various other aspects that he used in the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
Matt has met the perfect one for him, but the timing is all wrong. Falling for her could get them both killed. Even if he survives, he will likely serve time for his past mistakes. Randi doesn’t understand why he wants to keep her at more than arms length. Would she still want a relationship with him if she knew about his past? The risk just seems too great.
This book is action packed from start to finish. I appreciated the clean language and the absence of sex scenes. There were religious overtones, but it didn’t feel at all preachy. There is talk of drugs and drug dealers and there is quite a bit of violence, but neither were graphic.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good thriller. The romance is a nice addition too.
Matt and Randi try to stay alive to testify against a drug cartel.
What I liked: The story was enjoyable--it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the realism, both in the plot and in the details. For many years, I’ve hoped to see DMSO featured in a book, and my wish was granted (chemists tend not to talk much about it, due to the potential nefarious uses of this easily obtained chemical). The author was very open about the spiritual lessons he hoped to impart, and the story was an excellent vehicle for those lessons.
What I didn’t like: The writing was fine, but it didn’t completely transport me into the setting or into the characters’ lives. There were some misspellings; for example, “vice” appeared several times in place of “vise.”
This book will keep you glued to it. For sure a page turner full of action and adventure. Plus some sweet romance. Well written and loved the characters. Matt Mathison has lost out on his career in football do to a bad injury. Leaves to make a new life for himself in the country. But his pass has followed him there to kill him. While out on a run he me meets Randi a beautiful woman out on a run herself. Something is drawing them together, but should he even get close with a killer on his heals and a pass to clean up? This story is not just romance but a matter of honor , trust , faith, forgiveness and courage. Like I said it is action packed. Looking forward to book 2.
The beginning of No Safe Place was great. I've never seen the hero and heroine meet in such way. Crash Course Blind Dating, should really be a thing. The villains were interesting and occasionally comical in how Zambaba described his irritating computer nerd partner. The suspense was awesome in the unique H.L Wegley way. The pace was great, I didn't feel as though I was being dragged through the chapters at a snails pace. The action was easy to follow along with I didn't have to reread anything to understand how we got to a certain point. I loved the ending which brought the story to a graceful close without any loose ends. I will definitely be reading No Safe Place again.
At a remote outpost in Northwest Washington, meteorologist Randi bumps into a former standout college football quarterback. Matt’s had a run-in with a Mexican drug cartel and has a price on his head, a team of assassins has Matt in their sights, and now Randi is thrown into the mix. Will they survive? And where will their relationship lead?
No safe place is a captivating thriller with interesting romantic elements and nice insight into true spirituality and the value of faith and forgiveness.
I loved this very well written thriller. The characters are wonderful. The story line kept me on the edge of my seat. Randi (Strong Christian) and Matt's (unsure prodigal) relationship ups and downs are well done and plausible. Hard to put down.I highly recommend this book. I received an advance reader copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
I wanted to read this because it took place in the Olympics and Lake Chelan, and I like suspense. But the situation between Matt and Randi made me want to puke. These are supposed to be two adults, albeit young ones, but they act like young teenagers. Otherwise, it had some good parts.
The author grabbed me from the start...right into the storyline and into the character of Randi and Matt...there is no doubt of the author's beliefs and the up front without timidy the gospel...he also chose the settings i was familiar with and i love that so i could reay get into the story. He is one of my new favorite authors...
What an action-packed story with a powerful message! Since Matt accepted Jesus, he was forgiven. The wrongs from his past were washed clean and he became a new man. Praise God! It is up to us at that point to choose to accept that wonderful gift and live in the freedom that only comes from Jesus. Very well done!!!
No Safe Place is an action packed romantic suspense. I loved the well written plot, the well developed characters and the setting. If you enjoy romantic suspense I recommend this book. I received an arc from the author and this is my unbiased review.
Both Randi and Matt had started new lives in Christ but were stumbling over past acts. Together, through shared danger and a realization of the true power of Jesus' resurrection, they learned to forgive themselves. Three are always stronger when one is God.
This is a great book. I loved the way it shows the struggles of faith, unbelief, forgiveness, family relationships without being preachy, all within an action packed story filled with drug dealers and hit men and more. I loved it.
I read this Book all in one sitting in one day. I could not put it down. I loved both Characters and especially that the God of Eternity was in their lives.I: loved this Story.
This story is full of suspense with some twists and a little humor...and of course romance. I loved the spiritual growth of the characters, and that it was done without being preachy. Highly recommend.
Or maybe not! A quick, great, intriguing read. God does work on mysterious ways but His timing is always PERFECT. Scenes played out well, good characters development, just enough suspense to keep the pages turning.., Well worth the read
I liked this book even if their relationship moved a little too fast. Randi was bad*ss, she didn't ket anyone make decisions for her, she was herself, take it or leave it. Matt was so torn between being with her and protecting her, it was so cute. I liked them together, they good for each other
First book I have read by this author, and it was a pretty good read. I love books about WITSEC, so this one definitely appealed to me. Some of the back and forth and up and downs between the two main characters got annoying, but it ended well.
Couldn’t get into this book. Too many cliches, the writing too poor, the characters 1-dimensional and underdeveloped, the romance unrealistic, and scenes of running ran on and on and on and...
