I helped the Four Horsemen save the world, but I can’t save my own life.

I’m Syv. I like to collect sharp weapons, and my favourite activity is liberating magical items. My best friend is an immortal fae, and I love dogs.

I’m not enthusiastic about end of the world scenarios.

Okay, I’m a half-demon thief with an attitude that brings me more enemies than friends. But the fae part is true.

My life had returned to normal, but everything changed when my latest assignment ended in disaster. Somebody took the item I was ‘liberating’ and also decided to curse me with a death mark. If I don’t find the cure soon, I’m facing life as a lich under the control of a necromancer.

And I swear the demonic dog I rescued from the apocalypse is following me.

Now, three sexy supernatural guys have tracked me down in need of my ability to detect magic. They want to recruit me to work alongside them and under their protection. The guys need me to locate an item and also claim they know someone who can find a cure for my mark. So, we strike a deal: I’ll help them if they help me.

The problem is, I’m not sure I trust their so-called ‘secret organisation’. Another problem? They’re on the Four Horsemen’s hit list because they shouldn’t be in this world.  As my death is imminent and options limited, I’ve agreed to leave with them tonight.

But if they murder me, I’m going to be really pissed off.

Don't miss this new series from the world of The Four Horsemen, LJ Swallow's addictive bestselling reverse harem series.

Held by Magic is a slow burn reverse harem urban fantasy.

I felt like I was missing a bunch of information. Is this a spin off book? Because I don’t quite understand the established world and even though it has been explained, I’m still not sure I get it.

Syv is all of a sudden with these guys after she gets a Death Mark, but idk she’s not suspicious of them, instantly connects with them, but they still don’t all trust each other.

The book ends on a cliffhanger and I still am as confused as ever. I rated it a 3 because the writing is decent, but I’m confused as hell. Why end the book here? This did NOT seem like a place to stop the book, to me nothing significant or major major happened enough for the book to be done.

I’m not sure if I will continue or not.

Well, what an amazing start to a new series. We first met Syv in the The Four Horsemen series. When she pops up now and then to help out Vee and the boys. She's a half demon with 100% sassy attitude, and has some great tricks up her sleeve.

This time it's her story, and she's not having the best of luck. A somewhat simple job ends up becoming her worst nightmare, when she ends up with her own untimely death to worry about. But help comes in the shape of some rather unusual, yet gorgeous otherworldly men, with some pretty awesome talents.

I truly enjoyed every page of this story. It was fresh, unique, exciting and scary all at the same time. Plus best mention the brewing chemistry between Syv and the mysterious new friends she meets. Oh and if you are already missing the Horsemen and Vee, we get some to see them too!

Perfect return from LJ Swallow, more than excited for the next story in this series.

5 huge stars!

This is a good read, although I will say that the leading character Syv, sometimes annoys me with her obtuseness and actions of stupidity.

Animal Cruelty, DNF

This is not the first book in the series.

In as much as the world building for the AU takes place in a book that is not available through Amazon and must be acquired by signing up for the author’s list serve, the world building and character development of this book is sub par. This book is told in first person limited omniscient which is exhausting when the narrator is a waste of time. The fmc, whose name I don’t recall (that’s how much of an impression she left on me), is every “pick me” manic pixie dream girl ever. She has super powers that were apparently introduced in the other book. Something paranormal/supernatural happened in the other book. She became a professional thief and kills with impunity. I must speculate about a writer who decides to introduce her character by having her stab a pet to death while attempting to steal, then make jokes about rescue dogs. It certainly created an impression.

I was lucky enough to BETA and ARC read this book and voluntarily decided to leave my honest review. If you follow my blog you’ll know that BETA reading for L.J. Swallow was a great experience and if you want, you can read more about it here

This is the first book in Lisa’s new Reverse Harem series called “the Demon’s Covenant”. This series is a spin-off of The Four Horsemen. Even though, there is a few references and character overlap its not necessary to have read TFH in order to read this series.

Held by Magic is such a great start to this series.

The first time we meet Syv is in TFH, where she pops up every now and then, to help them stop the apocalypse. Through the books, she strikes up a friendship with Vee, which helps give her a proper role. However, nothing could have prepared me for how brilliant Syv is as main character in her own series. Seriously, I love this sassy half demon chick.

Syv’s story starts with something that looks a lot like a double cross. She’s on a job, trying to get her thieving hands on a box, when she’s attacked by guards and rescued by strangers. If it wasn’t because she during the fighting gets marked for death, it might have turned out to be an alright day. Since Syv now carries the death mark, she has to weigh her options and ends up going with the strangers that just saved her backside.

It turns out that the heroes are everything but! In TFH Chaos opened some portals and let many different beings through, and now TFH horsemen are hunting down those that escaped. However, as with every other race, not all of them are bad. In fact, three of them just saved Syv, and promises to do what they can to help rid them of the mark, if she in return help them hunt down more boxes.

Trusting and working with others is definitely not something that comes easy for Syv, as she only has 2 friends. And even using the term friend is a bit farfetched. I guess the more accurate way to describe it, would be people she kind of almost trust, and can stand most of the times. Who’s those two? Well, as beforementioned one of them is Vee, the other is the immortal Fae Collector. Not to forget her love for the demonic dog, Spot.

description

But now, thanks to a cross double cross situation, Syv has no choice but to but her trust in Cillian, Morgan and Dex. This group of anti heroes has a lot standing against them, so much in fact, that it almost looks like another end of the world deal. On top of that, as a lone wolf Syv isn’t sure how to deal with the fact that she’s attracted to these guys.

I really loved every page of this book and even though it’s a spin off, it’s unique, exciting and most importantly, new.

I really liked how Lisa managed to bring some of TFH into the book, while not letting them take over. Personally, I was a bit worried about this part because as a TFH fan I expected them to make an appearance, but I didn’t want them to take the spotlight from Syv. And I’m happy to say that Lisa balanced this perfectly! TFH does make an appearance (or some of them does), but it is is done in such a great way, that it’s clear who’s the leading lady of this series.

The characters, OMG the characters! Lisa is a champion of creating them and guiding them through everything she throws at them. What I didn’t expect was, to see some character development already in the first instalment, of this new series. But I should have known that Lisa would surprise me.

I really can’t recommend this book enough, and if I could I would give it 100’s of hearts.

“No amount of alcohol, sex, and Netflix makes up for an early death."

Marked for death or, alternatively known as an eternal slave to a demon prince, Syv is rescued from an almost fatal attack by three of the most gorgeous men she’s ever laid eyes on. They have magic she’s never seen before, and with a background in ‘finding and liberating’ magic items, that’s some kind of feat that makes her more suspicious, if that was ever possible.

These three men offer to help her find a cure for her death mark, in return for her help in finding seven mysterious boxes. They know a warlock who could help her, although it seems unlikely, and the warlock suggests she spends her final days watching Netflix and chilling.

In a spin-off series from LJ Swallow’s first Urban Fantasy and Reverse Harem (RH) series, The Four Horsemen, Syv’s story is about to be told in her own words. And this is the first book in The Devil’s Covenant series. The three newbies here came through the portals forced open by Chaos in the previous series, and are trying to make their way in their new world, as well as aid others trying to blend in, before the Horsemen decimate them in their destroy first and ask questions later philosophy. But they owe Syv for her help, and feature, along with Vee, as secondary characters who may help the new breed of magic inhabiting the human world.

Once again, L Swallow has sucked me into her world of action filled Urban Fantasy - just what I love reading about! There’s plenty of ar$e kicking going on, and our heroine is in the thick of it. I’d also like to add that while the concept of the Reverse Harem genre still makes me a little uncomfortable, Ms Swallow somehow makes the whole formula work. So, if you’re not sure, but would like to try one out, I’d totally recommend her books. She got me hooked with her Four Horsemen series, and this one is shaping up to every bit as brilliant. I’ve pre-ordered book two, and I cannot award this book any less than 5 stars for sure.

I borrowed this title on my kindle unlimited subscription

I am not usually the biggest fan of spin off series but I have to say that this is a great start to a new series, and I am loving Syvs story so far! Gripped from page one this book has hooked me completely and I need book two. It’s great seeing things from Syvs point of view and I love the dynamics between her and her new friends and I am adoring that the collector is in it! If you have not read the four horsemen series I would recommend you do so that you understand the story better. Very well written with excitement danger and action? I loved it

I absolutely loved this book!!! I’ve been waiting for Syv’s new book, and it was even better than anticipated! I was so happy Spot was in the book again, and I loved everything about him and his character! Morgan and Cillian are really cool with very interesting powers! And my absolute favorite is Col!!! I was so intrigued by their relationship, and I loved seeing the dynamic between him, Syv, Dex, Morgan, and Cillian.. The ending was great, but now I’m eagerly awaiting Elements of Magic!!! So much to think about! Who you was that demon in the chair that trapped Syv? Who is Syv really? Will Col be okay with the three new dwellers? Will the dwellers get along with Col? Will the horsemen help? Will Syv survive the mark on her arm? Will she be free of Bastian? I can’t wait to find out all the answers to these questions in the next books in the Held by Magic: The Demon’s Fae series!!!

Read The Four Horseman first

Held by Magic is set in the same world as a previous series. The beginning was good and got me excited to read this book. The FMC is funny and seemed to be badass, then she met the guys. I expected it to get even better...it didn't. The story was boring mainly because they kept talking about characters I didn't know. I haven't read the series this series is a spin-off of, so these characters mean nothing to me. It's a very slow burn which made it drag on more. I do like Syn I find her snark lol funny. I may go and read The Four Horseman series and then come back to this one.

What?

What? What did I just read? The book had potential clearly as I finished it but the characters just didn’t make sense to me. One second she’s clearly telling the bad fae, that Cillian is her boyfriend (which she only said to the bad fae so they would leave her alone) but then when Cillian says it for the same reason literally the next sentence she’s pissed for him for saying it. This happens throughout the book but of course dif scenarios.

I liked her sarcasm. I prob won’t continue the series.

Syv. Half Demon with a knack for 'finding' things. She's made a successful living locating and obtaining objects to 'return' to her wealthy clients. It's dangerous work and doesn't allow for her to get close to others but that's okay since she has trust issues anyway. Her best friends are an immortal fae known as The Collector and Vee, the Horsemen's fifth. In the last year, she helped the Horsemen save the world, broke things off with her abusive fae lover, and rescued a demon dog Spot. Now her life has returned to normal until on a regular job, she's attacked, the item that she was after is stolen away from her, and she's cursed with a death mark. None of the other girls that have been cursed with this mark have survived but Syv is not one to give up. Plus, she has the help of three dwellers who want to make a deal with her. They will help her to find a cure and discover more about herself if she will join their team to locate some special boxes. Having no other options, Syv decides on a limited partnership. Now Syv can only hope that these men can be trusted and that she stays alive long enough to see if they are worthy of her attention.

Held By Magic is the spin-off of LJ Swallow's The Four Horsemen series. I was a huge fan, so naturally, I jumped at the chance to re-enter this world. I admit when we first met Syv, I was not a fan. I felt threatened for Vee. So unnecessary. However, when Vee and Syv had a girl's night drinking, my opinion changed completely. Her sass and sarcasm perfectly compliment Vee. I would love more girl's nights. The trouble these two could cause! Syv is snarky, has a sense of humor that grows on you, an inappropriate sense of timing when to use her humor, and level of badassery rarely found in women. She's a bit too prickly and has trust issues but that's to be expected considering her heritage. Cillian, Morgan, and Dex all came through the portals while they were open during the fight with Chaos. Dwellers, as they are called are not welcome on earth and the Horsemen believe that they should all be eradicated. These three work for an agency that is trying to teach these newcomers how to integrate into regular society so they have an uneasy relationship with the paranormal world. They want Syv to join their team but Syv isn't much of a team player. She's tempted by the idea of finally having a family of sorts and she is attracted to the men but they have secrets that make her already suspicious nature even more resistant to getting closer to them. Then there's also Col, the Collector. She's always wanted him and he's the only person she feels truly cares for her in the world but as a sister, not as a woman. Still, she can't help but want more.

The storyline was entertaining, the suspense evident from the first page. The characters are all unique and intriguing. I love Col. He is a fascinating mystery. Dex and the hound are awesome. I definitely want more. Cillian is as sweet as he is powerful. And then there's Morgan. I don't like anything about him. I won't say more except to say that I love that I can't stand him. I am drawn to the fact that I feel so strongly about him. Frankly, it's about time I couldn't tolerate a guy in an RH. I look forward to seeing if he can win me over or if I continue to dream about him being painfully sucked through a portal or Vee kicking him from here to the furthest Horsemen for hurting Syv. Because as tough as Syv pretends she is, she wants to find her people. She wants to be accepted, cherished, loved, and even protected. She's been alone for so long, always had to protect herself and the moment she starts to let down her walls, Morgan's weakness and fear prove to her that she's been right to never trust anyone but herself. Maybe a bit of acidic slobber or a little freeze action would help him be a better man...A girl can dream. I consider myself the founding member of Syv's fan club and he has a way to go before he earns his membership into her harem!

I recommend this book wholeheartedly. As much as I loved the Four Horsemen and Vee, this spin-off might be even better. It has the benefit of the original's incredible history and world-building, plus the addition of all of the new portal crossers and the powers, benefits, and threats they bring. And it has Syv with all of her sass and brokenness; you can't help but fall in love and root for this girl to get her HEA!

I make one tiny mistake, and suddenly I’m marked for death, running from demons, and pursued by my fae ex-lover. Who knew stealing a magic box could cause so much trouble?
I hope the demons don’t overthrow the fae because they’re my best customers—especially the enigmatic Collector who really shouldn’t be friends with a half-demon thief. I’d like to be more than friends with the immortal and too-sexy-for me fae, but he always keeps our relationship strictly professional.
My skills are more in demand than I realise because three hot demons from a mysterious institute track me down.
Powerful but seductive elemental demon Cillian.
Sharp and guarded djinn Morgan.
And their companion Dex who’s definitely not human and also strangely familiar.
Hook ups aren’t on my agenda, but these guys have some interesting skills to distract me from my imminent death.
The trio and their institute ask me to locate more of the mysterious boxes, and in return they promise to cure my death mark and keep me alive. Simple. The problem is, these boxes are mixed up with the demon and fae troubles, and now so are we.

Heather's Notes
This book is a spinoff from another, and while the author says you can read it as a stand alone I disagree. I have not read the other series, but if I decide to read more of this series I will go back and read it first. It is obvious stuff happened that we need to know about, because I do not understand the world, or why certain factions are not ok with other factions or how we got to were we are in the world. I don't know if I will continue or not, the book ends in a cliffhanger (we know how I feel about that), but also I still don't really understand what is going on. Nothing really happened in this book except we met everyone. Not real interested in this series, but maybe book 2 is better, but first I will have to go back to the other series.

Fun & interesting look into Syv's life, and I'm excited to learn more.

I agree with the note at the beginning, that Held by Magic and the Horsemen series CAN be read as separate standalone series, but I would definitely encourage readers to dig into the Horsemen's world. The Horsemen, Vee, and the role they play in the world is mentioned multiple times in Held by Magic, and I think readers will get a fuller experience from having read the Horsemen series.

Anyway, I digress.

Syv is sassy, she's brave, she takes no prisoners (unless she needs to). Her innate ability to find/identify magical items has helped her make a living, but now it's threatening her survival. She finds herself doing the one thing she hates most in order to find a way to survive: relying on others.

I really love Syv- she's mysterious, strong, and still vulnerable. There's a lot to learn about her, and I always love a female MC with a bad*ss attitude.

The men all have their own intrigue, and I'm not sure which one I like the best so far. Cillian strikes me as the most confident, while Dex and Morgan show more vulnerability. I was a little surprised with how quickly they each seemed interested in some kind of physical relationship with Syv; they were so flirty with her right off the bat despite this being a slow burn.

The plot is moving quickly, and I'm totally ready for some big action in book 2.

The Four Horseman series has been one of my favourite RH series to date and I must say I loved Syv's sassy, confident and bad-ass character on-site, her interactions with the Pony Boys and Vee.....now she has her own series and I must say, it does not disappoint!

Held by Magic, is the first in the series, and if it continues on this thread, it will be explosive! Although the book is set in a time period, just after, The Four Horseman series, it is separate, so you do not need to have read the previous books.

Syv is a half human-demon hybrid, she is a sassy, confident bad-ass thief! She has a great sense of humour and I found her character really taking shape throughout this story! To date, we have only had glimpses of the woman, however in Held by Magic we begin to she her many layers, as we meet the woman beneath the brash exterior. This Book very much sets the scene for what is to come in this series and I cannot wait to see where LJ takes this Book and these characters!

I don't want to say too much, as it is a definite one to read, and I would not want to spoil it for anyone!

Held By Magic is definitely one to add to the holiday reading list! You will not be disappointed!

LJ Swallow is an amazing author who writes awesome books. Her latest book, Held by Magic is about a half human, half demon gal named Syv.

Syv is sassy, kick ass and one hell of a woman. This is her story and she finds herself in the unusual position of needing help. Help comes in the form of four smoking hot guys, Col (Fae), Cillian, Morgan and Dex (not entirely sure of the heritage but Demon is in the mix).

As the story progresses Syv finds herself attracted to these men more and more, which leads to some hot and heavy moments. She is also being perused by an unknown person/s for reasons that have yet to be revealed.

LJ Swallow makes me feel invested in Syv’s story. I need to find out more about her. Who is she? What is she? Why are people chasing her? What makes her special.

This is a great book, I loved every moment and I can’t wait for the next instalment is Syv’ story!!

DNF @ 37%. Too much backstory/exposition crap. The book keeps referring to past events that I suppose maybe happened in a previous novel/series, but this is supposed to be a book one. The final straw happened during an exposition chapter where I was skimming due to boredom and missed a line that said “Portia, the fae queen” only to run headlong into the line “when Portia refused to cooperate with the four Horsemen” and I went “wait, who tf is Portia?” Like, first of all, is that any way to refer to a monarch? And second, why am I even here? This book isn’t about the Four Horsemen and their story, nor is it about the fae queen who we are apparently on first-name terms with, and I’m *fucking bored!*

Wow..just wow. Lisa sure knows how to kick off a series with a bang. I loved Syv when first meeting her in the Four Horsemen and it is great that she now has her own series and her own guys! Syv is a kick-ass FMC, independent, capable, some-what vulnerable and sarcastic. Then you bring in the big and best Dex, mysterious Morgan and interesting Cillian and there is a great team. I will say I do have a soft spot for Dex and I love him and Syv together! But all three bring something different and intriguing to Syv. Then the Collector...captivating!! This is a fantastic first book in an exciting new series by a very talented author and I can’t wait to see what happens next!! Bring on book 2.

I did not expect to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did! & I totally LOVED it!
Syv is a sassy, ass kicking, epic MC! & I seriously loved the new characters brought into this story! Cillian being sexy and honest, Morgan smouldering, sexy & your typical dark and brooding, then Dax who is your lighthearted playful guy with a vulnerability that makes your heart melt! I love that it shows where they fit in the four horsemen’s story while also being a story totally of their own!
Definitely recommend!!!

What a great start to a new series. I really enjoyed Syv's no nonsense character. Syv is a half demon half human it doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere. She is thief of magical items because for some reason they call to her. Spot is the best!! When Syv is asked to join an organization to help supernaturals who slipped in the open portals the Horsemen were trying to close she's caught off guard. Then the mark appears and she needs them as much as they need her. I'm looking forward to the next book and the action to come.

Yeah, for Syv! Syv was first introduced in the “Four Horsemen” series and I’m so glad she has her own story. Spot comes back too! I love Spot!
Syv is back to her “collecting” of magical artifacts when a couple of demons try to kill her. Three sexy-looking men show up and rescue her, but in exchange for saving her life, they want her help in locating dangerous missing boxes. These guys arrived during the open portals and their lack of “popular” sayings is hilarious along with Syv’s snarky attitude. I can’t wait to see how this series progresses.

Another great book

Another great book if you love the four horsemen universe. Now the story centres around Syv in all her bada** take no nonsense attitude, maybe she finally has met her match in her own trio of dwellers. I loved the first book in what is promising to be another amazing series by LJ Swallow, not that I expected anything less. If you love reverse harem with a strong female lead then this is definitely a must read.

Great start to this new spin-off series from The Four Horsemen and i have to stay i like this one better.

Love Syv she was one of my favorite characters from the previous books and all the guys are interesting and fun in their own ways. I love how Dex's character intertwines with previous events too and it does make sense how deep his bond with Syv is.

Lots of action and humor, just a good fun read.

I loved this first installment to a new series. I wasn’t all that sure if Syv had potential from what I read of her in the horsemen books. But she’s legit. I love her kickass attitude and how she navigates through her first really huge trial. She needs the guys and apparently they need her. This rag-tag group of misfits that are looking for the impossible. Fun read!!

Have been looking forward to Syv 's story. It's really good. Well written and flows well. Reading Syv 's point of view of some of the events in the horseman series is great too. Syv and her guys have to learn to trust each other and work together. You get more of an insight into the collector too. Very good read and highly recommend, esp if you enjoyed the horseman.

I'm so happy that syv got her own book. Syv tries so hard to keep everyone out and be tough all the time but we get to see what is really going on inside her head. Also watching the interactions between her and the collector were interesting. Spot is definitely my favorite and I cant wait to see what happens next with syv and her dwellers.

Meh. Held by Magic was a waste of money for me. While I enjoyed the Four Horsemen series, I felt Syv was a weak protagonist, always being rescued and never appreciating the men bailing her out. The story ended without wrapping up any of the open threads, somewhat abruptly. The mid-range rating is due to good writing, even though I didn't care for the characters.

A terrific side story to the four horsemen

I haven't read anything yet by LJ swallow that I didn't enjoy. There are shared characters with the four horsemen stories, and this book gives us more background on a few select characters. It's a great story with plenty of action, well worth a read.

I really enjoyed the characters, especially the unflappable heroine. I love snarky humor and there was plenty of it! Held by Magic reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer if Spike, Angel and some other supernatural all showed up in her life at once. Trust was an ongoing theme, and the message was one of my favorites... It's okay to be different.
