Last time on DanMachi, we finished off the Xenos Arc. All kinds of chaos ensued (including a gripping fight between Bell and Aiz) as Hestia Familia tried to help the Xenos escape from Orario. However, Hermes created a fake notebook to trick them and force Bell to kill one of the Xenos. Double however, Freya had other plans. She had Ottar direct Asterios, the black minotaur that Aiz injured earlier, to Bell. Turns out that Asterios is a reincarnation of the very first minotaur that Bell fought all that time ago. Their battle is enough of a distraction for the Xenos to escape into the Dungeon, but Bell gets his ass handed to him by Asterios. After the battle, the beast returns to the Dungeon, to train up for the last of their best-two-out-of-three-match. Bell cries for a bit, but continues to move forward as usual.

So, guys, did you know that there’s a massive, underground labyrinth called the Dungeon right underneath Orario? It’s kind of been a while since the story actually involved going there. After the incident, Bell’s rank increases to Level 4, which brings Hestia Familia’s overall rank to D. At this rank, the Guild will now send them off on regular expeditions in the Dungeon, with each ending off on a floor that they haven’t been to before. Finally! But here’s the thing, floors 25 and onward are called “the New World” (*cough* not a ripoff of anything *cough*), and this is where the Dungeon takes the kid gloves off.

The main narrative of this volume is that they end up discovering a rare monster that has grown stronger  by gaining XP from other monsters. Although it’s not Asterios, it ends up proving to be quite a challenge because it’s also much smarter than most monsters that aren’t Xenos.

Overall, it’s a good volume, but the biggest issue with this volume is the lack of further character development. It’s undeniable that the characters have grown immensely throughout the series; Bell has better judgement, Lily and Welf are better fighters, Haruhime even gets a new move, and more. The character arcs for most of these people feel more or less complete, which is both good and bad. Good because the series can focus primarily on the Dungeon like it was meant to, and bad because there’s still a lot of story left but it needs chutzpah to stay interesting. Hopefully the new development at the end of the volume will give it that chutzpah.

~~~~~
Verdict: 8.5/10
Sorry for the short post today, but there really isn’t much to say here. This is a good breather volume, and one that we really needed. It doesn’t have a huge revelation or anything, but it’s still DanMachi.
Suite à l’affrontement avec le Minotaure, Bell a regagné la confiance des habitants d’Orario, mais a ébranlé sa confiance en lui-même. Il a brutalement réalisé tout le chemin qui lui restait à parcourir, malgré sa progression rapide vers les niveaux supérieurs. Dans ce douzième volume, nos héros se voient confier une mission de longue durée et partent dans les strates inférieures du Donjon.
Ce tome revient un peu aux sources de la saga : la découverte du Donjon. J’ai adoré replonger dans cet univers très semblable aux jeux vidéo. Bell et sa Familia explorent cette fois-ci les niveaux plus profonds que le Labyrinthe Sylvestre que nous avions déjà pu découvrir avec eux. Ils doivent apprendre à travailler en groupe, découvrir ce nouvel environnement et apprivoiser leurs nouvelles capacités dues à leurs récentes aventures. Malgré un côté qui peut paraître un peu scolaire car les nouveaux monstres et leurs capacités sont décrites presque scientifiquement, ce tome est captivant. On tremble devant ces nouveaux dangers tout en ayant envie de plonger de plus en plus loin dans le Donjon pour en révéler tous les mystères…
Outre Bell et son évolution, j’ai trouvé que le personnage qui prenait vraiment son importance ici était Lili. La petite Prum tend à revoir son rôle, à réfléchir à ses capacités et impressionne autant ses compagnons que le lecteur. Elle se révèle forte et douée d’un esprit stratégique et directif étonnant. On a juste envie de la soutenir et de voir jusqu’à quel point elle va révéler son plein potentiel. En refermant le roman, je n’avais qu’une envie : que la Familia continue son exploration pour en apprendre plus sur le Donjon et sur eux-mêmes !
In the aftermath of the Xenos affair, Bell has hit level 4 which raises the ranking of the whole familia so they now get assigned expeditions to the dungeon from the guild. With a few friends to help fill out their party, Hestia Familia heads into the dungeon working for the lower floors.
An Irregular makes an appearance and throws everything out of whack, but it made for a good read. Bell of course is the hero, but I really appreciated getting to see the other members of Hestia Familia step up and do their thing (as well as some of their friends). I am glad Omori-sensei gave them some page time. I would hope that some of this excelia would get some of them to level up. After all we still have a fair number of level 1s running around with this party. I'm not asking them to all hit level 4 like Bell, but let's get some Level 2s going since they do actually contribute... especially on this expedition.
Anyhow, it is nice to start a new arc (not that I disliked the Xenos arc.) As usual, I am looking forward to seeing where we go from here.
While it might feel like a side story sometimes, the fact is Omori needed to tidy up the series. Bell needed to take this step as a MC and start doing because he wants to rather than being pushed into.
The expedition story is really fun, with some adventurers from other Familias joining in.
I will not spoil the book, but there were 3 or 4 WOWOWOWOWOW moments where characters revealed new power or new weapons.
In summary, this volume felt like the great volume 3, but with less emphasis on Bell and more on the whole Hestia Familia!
Character Growth
I enjoyed this book in the series primarily because Bell is maturing. Not just his power level and strength as an adventurer, though that's there too, but as a young man growing up and learning of the world. The MC who can't handle women when he's surrounded by a harem gets old after awhile. Not saying he dives in here, but he's not flustered as much as he used to be. He's more serious now but still has his nice guy charm and i hope it continues this way, maybe even becoming more adult like in the content 😉
This one is all about character development.
In this book we are back to dungeon crawling, but after the events that occurred in volume 10 and 11 some of the members of Hestia Familia experienced some character grow, especially Bell. And that change made the adventure in this volume one of the best yet, and that's saying something considering how the last two volumes were one of my favorites.
Great start for a new arc.
A great start for this new arc, simple story but action pack from the beginning to the end. Once again the author writes a story taking care of the characters and making them grow in this book. Each character is unique and well describe, this is one of the strongest points in this serie and one that makes it unique. No doubt I’ll be reading the next book as soon as I can.
Back to a dungeon tale from this dungeon series, we can appreciate the growth of the Hestia Familia - not just Bell, but Mikoto's martial arts, Haruhime's magic and Lilly's leadership all shine here. Bell is finally "picking up" girls in a dungeon and it lightened the mood on this battle-heavy book. Overall satisfacting, and I can't wait to pick the next one!
Bell and his comrades are growing up. Comparing the way they handled this dungeon excursion to their trips into the dungeon from the first volume is like night and day.
After the big adventures with the xenos this volume feels almost filler like. Just an simple excursion to show just how much has happened since the start of this big adventure.
Great volume, loved it! Missing some characters, but I didn't even notice it until I was done reading it. Consistently good, however feel the final battle was over pretty quick, but the last few have been pretty detailed, so I can accept this one.
Back to the dungeon this felt much better then the previous few volumes. Bell isn't such a lost, reluctant character which makes the story overall less of a pain to read.. Looking forward to the volumes about Lyuu
It was the very necessary volume here in this positioning between the end of immaturity and the beginning of the growing up members of hestia familia, which made me very happy that Fujino Ōmori sensei did not overlooked these details of an adventurer’s daily life.
Slow start but amazing pay off at the end!
The book has a rough start and gets insanely boring at times but after the halfway point the story really picks up and becomes the danmachi I've come to love.
This was a good directional change from the whole Xenos arc. Omori stays pretty much entirely within the dungeon in this one, though I felt this volume lacked a bit of the slice of life stuff, which is one of my favorite things about the series.
A solid continuation
A deliberately softer paced novel following from the previous dramatic volume. That’s okay though as there’s still plenty of adventure and we get back to the basics of dungeon crawling and the terror the dungeon can produce. Loving this series as always!
A truly engrossing story
This time spent 100% in the dungeon was a real trip, especially with the moss monster. I was sweating bullets along with all the humans, dwarves and elves.
I am REALLY looking forward to Vol 13.
The joy in reading this volume is the same as the first. The author recaptures the adventure that got me hooked on the series. The best of recent volumes.
Not quite where I thought or wanted the story to go after the epic ness of the previous volume, but it was a nice bridge between story arcs.
It's ok I picked it after the anime ended and I felt that why not? I mean the novel is not bad I just don't feel like it's as good as people say it is.
