Remember to Forget Earns 3.5/5 Memory Issues…Good Try!
Jwyan C. Johnson has penned an interesting shorty that although I enjoy the story as a whole, there were some places of confusion. I like the premise that teenager Dedra Kare was in a hit and run accident on the same day as a high-profile murder, and the police have evidence she might be a key witness. However, the accident has left Dedra with retrograde amnesia which means she’s able to recall everything that happened “after” the accident, but anything that happened “before,” which includes the murder, is lost to her. Hypnosis is suggested as a way to retrieve her memories of the events from that night, and it is thought that maybe her full set of memories might also return. Her parents emphatically decline to give their permission which was a very surprising reaction, and when Dedra’s sister eludes to the family keeping secrets, for me, that’s where some of the scenes lose clarity, lacked transition, and didn’t tie well together. As this book in one in five, the tale seems to be one that might build throughout all of the books, so I’m hoping the central mystery will become clearer. Despite misspellings and grammar errors that should have been caught in this 2nd edition, I am intrigued enough to continue.
I received this book as a part of Early Reviewers on Library Thing in exchange for my honest opinion.
Note: The entirety of this review far exceeds the character limit for GoodReads reviews, so I have left out most examples and expository content. To read all of that in full, see my review of this on Library Thing.
Where do I begin.
I don't even know.
I think I made more highlights in this very short story than I have in any other book. Honestly, I gave up after a while because nearly the whole book was highlighted red to indicate my confusions and points of interest.
Let's start with the question I've been asked to answer:
How surprised were you with the actual way Dedra uncovered the truth?
I picked up this on Instafreebie (now renamed to Prolific Works) months ago when I was in a mystery craze and only got to reading it now.
Remember to Forget is a short read and an interesting mystery about Dedra, the sister who was witness to a crime but suffers Retrograde Amnesia and a family who is hiding a secret.
It was the plot that interested me the most. I like the idea of the only witness being unable to recall the incident and I love that it is her family that is refusing to give consent to the only way the detectives are able to solve the mystery. The conflicts made it seem as if it is impossible for the mystery to be solved and it made me excited to read it.
One thing to note is that although the plot is interesting, the execution of it is confusing. I had difficulties understanding the events as none of it actually formed a story. It seems as if it was bits and pieces of ideas without proper connection to one another. There were no filler parts in the story to make it interesting, instead, most of the story was focused on the one location where the interrogation took place.
The story also has a lack of clarity. I couldn't tell what the parents were hiding nor what the characters meant in their speech, especially in the most crucial parts of the story. I even had to reread some parts again and yet I still did not understand.

Remember to Forget is the first novel in the Karma’s Revenge Series. A celebrity is devastated by an attack in a small town. Hollywood is applying pressure for immediate answers. They are setting the town on fire wanting the case to be solved. They have found that there is a girl in the surveillance tape. It is a teenage girl Dedra Kare who is suffering retrograde amnesia.
There is a medical remedy to unlock Dedra’s memory. Her parents have refused the testing, No one understands why. What does Dedra possibly know? Was she possibly involved with the crime? Dedra is just a kid but everyone is putting pressure on her. Some are pushing her to defy her parents, others are pushing from the other side. She is just a kid, why will no one leave her alone? What can she do? If she has the treatment then she is going against her parents, if she goes against the law enforcement she may have a life, one of always looking back and knowing that there is a big hole in her life. Is she in danger? Can she handle the not knowing? This was truly an interesting story, a new take on an old theme. This if my first read by this author and I was quite pleased. I would highly recommend this author, and I can’t wait until the next novel in this series is available to read.
Very interesting beginning of this 1st book in this series. Dedra has amnesia and her parents and her sister are keeping secrets from her, even before her accident. Someone that she had gone to see on her birthday is dead but there were several things in her car when she was found unconscious. But Dedra finds something under her bed and it leads her to believe someone is either trying to play a practical joke on her or something more sinister. Janine takes her sister to the police station and confesses. Their parents for some reason does not want Dedra to remember what bad girl she had supposedly been before the accident. She doesn't understand her parents are why they are resisting her helping the police to solve the crime. Dedra is a very smart young woman and she is determined to do the right thing for her and her sister and outsmarts the bad guys. Short story with some interesting characters, the storyline has you asking so many questions about why her parents are reluctant to give permission to the police as well as Dr. Johnson. I was given a copy by the author as a gift without obligations. I am providing an honest review.
I downloaded a free copy because I'm always looking for something new and different. Turns out this is only a sample of the book, although that was not mentioned beforehand. I don't normally bother with samples but that's another story. I decided to have a look anyway. The writing is extremely disappointing - Poor spelling, poor grammar, poor punctuation. Disjointed sentences. And, it stops with 'To Be Continued'. The author then invites me to read the rest of the story by buying the book OR getting it for free if I first promise to write a review. There's a link that takes me to the PeaceFromThePuzzle site where I am asked to commit to writing the review. How convoluted. Who would bother? Especially when the whole thing is so poorly written? The book is described as a cozy mystery! It isn't. The only thing mysterious about it is trying to work out how this author could ever be considered to be a 'best-selling' author. Says who? There's lots of room for improvement.
In one word, I’d explain the story as confusing. There’s a lot going on, a lot of serious stuff, that actually don’t get explanations at all, and the whole story is rushed. There’s also a severe need of line editing and proofreading. The book is afraid of using ”said” and replaces it with ”replies” and other saidisms that become very distracting. A lot in this story depends on coincidences rather than actual investigations, and none of the scenes are clear in purpose or actually weaving together a picture of what things look like.
Basically, the story feels like a mix between a first draft and an outline. With editing and fleshing out, maybe it would read better than it did for me.
The concept for this story is excellent, however the writing is horrible! This should be removed from the market until editing and a full rewrite. Because of this, it was very confusing and hard to read. The author has great potential but needs much help with grammar, word usage, typos, and content facts. A delightful amnesia mystery. The detective involved in an unrelated murder believes she might coincidentally know something helpful. Dedra lost her memory due to an auto accident. Her parents refuse treatment which might allow the memories to return. Her younger sister, Janine, warns her not to remember. The solution is definitely not to be expected. Well done.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
This was a very confusing story and was riddled with grammar/spelling mistakes throughout. I do not plan to continue the series and am glad this was a very short read. I am also glad that this was free at the time I "purchased" it.
Short story of twisted possibilities vs what is the truth? I expected the parents as the problem but not due to the twist at the end! Definitely a different type of story, but well written! Thanks for the free book❤️❤️
I received this book for free for a honest review. This story was good and fast. I loved the bond between sisters. The author did a great job of keeping me interested and the story line together. The author did good work bringing the characters to life. you could feel their emotions. reccomend
If I hadn't known it was so short I would have stopped reading before the end. This very short story needs a good editing and proofreading. It also needs a story that doesn't mostly happen outside of what you actually read. If this is really the style intended, count me out.
This is a short book about Dedra who has retrograde amnesia & how her sister Candice helps her a lot. The police want her to undergo hypnosis but her parents totally refuse to let her do so. One wonders why! A good introduction to the series.
A bit confusing in the beginning but it all comes together at the end. Sisters who have each others backs and horrible parents who don’t. Good introduction to these characters and I’m interested in seeing these sisters grow.
Not my cup of tea. The language was stilted and the main two characters were not very relatable. I won't be reading more by this author. The only good element was it was not too long or I would have given up.
( Format : Audiobook ) "This is truly unbelievable." No idea what this was about, really, although I enjoyed the synopsis, which had made it sound interesting. Sadly, the narration by Priscilla Broussard was dreadful, with squeaky little girlie voice unpleasant on the ears, and delivery both too slow and jerky, slightly improved by running playback at 1.25 And the story line sounded more like a disjointed movie script. Mercifully short, I listened to the end in the expectation that all would be revealed. It wasn't. I received this as a free download.
A good read that could have been a bit clearer. A case of two sisters, one of whom had been in an accident tat gave her amnesia but also placed her at the scene of a murder. Can the acting detective get more details from her to find the killer and the person who run her over. Why are her parents so set against her regaining her memories? Will they be able to find out the truth and if so what will it do to her relationships?
This short story is as clear as mud. The entire story is a mystery as even by the end nothing is cleared up. There are also a number of glaring typos which given how short it is should easily have been caught. If there had been more description and information it might have been a decent story but instead it is just clueless (pun intended). I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Twisty and really different than most books I read, this story really caught my attention. A short story that flowed well and I just had to stick with it until I read the end. I loved the ending! I was surprised by how it was done.
