The Drunken Sailor: The Life of the Poet Arthur Rimbaud in His Own Words

Rate this book
The Drunken Sailor traces the life of Arthur poet, surrealist, libertine and gun runner. In dazzling artwork, Nick Hayes follows Rimbaud from his youth in Ardennes to the poetry salons of Paris, from the absinthe-glazed passion of his relationship with Verlaine to his flight into the jungles of Indonesia and the deserts of Yemen and Egypt. Told entirely in Rimbaud’s own words, from a new translation of Le bateau ivre, The Drunken Sailor confirms Nick Hayes’ place as one of the most talented graphic novelists at work today.

A nesmírně mě těší první reakce Nicka Hayese:
„Hey Pavel
I just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU for taking on the massive task of lettering my book in czech—its a whole heap of work, and im so grateful you were keen to do it, because it'll be a real honour to have the book in your language.
If theres anything i can to do help, or advise, please get in touch.
All the best, and thank you!
Nick“

When this book arrived and I leafed through it I was a trifle disappointed. The images seemed fairly monochrome and the text rather spare. It only reveals its beauty and subtlety when you sit and really engage with it over a period of time. The pictures are simple and elegant - several of them are stunning (I especially like the octopus). The words, from a new translation of Rimbaud's The Drunken Boat, are exquisite and weave their own rhythmic imagery. A book that will almost certainly give more rewards on repeated readings.

Beautifully drawn - exquisite in fact - and a great telling of Rimbaud's life through his own words. Wonderful.

Beautifully illustrated and a compelling visual biography that links in with Rimbaud's own poetry.
