Note: This is definitely is book 2 not book 1 of the series, but it’s interconnected standalones, so it’s not the end of the world… but read Kane first to learn his story if you want them in order. KU said it was book 1… 🙄

Cute story, highschool sweethearts loose touch for 12 years, and you don’t get to know why until 70% in!!! I was so annoyed the whole time… (like Sheldon in tbbt asking “why” repeatedly then finally “oh, that’s why”)

Annoying typos and grammar/sentence structure issues, but not enough to stop me from understanding the context or stop reading the book.

maybe 1/2 of a 🌶️/5
It’s there and it’s written well, but it’s not the focus of the story…

Another amazing read by Daisy Allen

Adored Daisy Allen's latest Men of Gotham book! Xavier is full of my favorites: angst, lust, and good feelings. Can't wait for Gabriel.

I absolutely loved this story!!! This was a fantastic read! The characters are so believable and real. They pulled me in from beginning to end and didn't let me go. I loved the fact that we actually got to go back into the past and see what happened when they were younger and how they came together the first time around. This story absolutely tugged on my heartstrings the entire time. I felt connected and was not ready for the story to come to the end of course. The story develops very well and we get to see the characters progress and deal with things as they work through issues both together and separate. It flows smooth and the story moves at a great pace. The story is a little bit on the longer side but you really don't feel it when you are reading. You just want more and to find out what is going to happen next and how the characters are going to work everything out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is the second in the series but it can be read as a standalone. There are recurring characters so you get that additional enjoyment if you have read the previous book but it really isn't needed.

I feel like I’m in the minority here so this is likely a ‘me’ problem so take this review with a huge pinch of 🧂 but I didn’t love this book.

The main characters weren’t particularly engaging and more than anything they annoyed me. It says a lot when you are more interested in the supporting characters than you are the MCs. They both felt a bit whiny and immature. I wanted to like Xavier in particular but I just didn’t in the end.

The book would definitely have benefited from more thorough editing as there were so many errors that it kept throwing me off the story.

The story had promise but sadly I didn’t get enough from it. I forced myself to finish the book despite wanting to DNF fairly early on so that probably also impacted my enjoyment.

Overall not for me but as I said I appear to be in the minority.

This is quite raw with Xavier pining over his first love of 12yrs ago & never getting over it. He is now successful working for the friend who saves him Kaine, who I believe is the first book in the series.
His life has hardened him to some degree.
Malynda/Isabel is also successful in her career where she crosses paths again with Xavier. They have a love/hate thing going on & just as life was evolving for them of course things get derailed. You will need to read this to see if they receive their HEA.
Overall a gripping hot read.

The author has given us characters that we can care about. The story takes us back and forth, between the past and the present. Xavier and Malynda were together during high school, but after graduation she leaves for New York and by the time he is ready to follow he receives a letter telling him it is over. He spends the next twelve years searching for her in New York.

Malynda and Xavier were each other’s first loves but after graduation Malynda left for college and disappeared. Twelve years letter he meets Isabella and it is Malynda. Will they be able to resolve the past to move forward together? Fast-paced read with plenty of steam and twists and turns. I liked it.

I appreciated the snarky jokes, sharp banter between Xander and his friends and the sarcasm in his thoughts.
The romance story and the steamy scenes were okay. The drama felt a bit over the top considering the fast pace.
The story had much potential but I couldn't enjoy the writing style and the storytelling. It felt like the book needed more editing before its release.

Second chances

This was the first book I’d read from this author. The cover alone had me excited to read it!

They were from different worlds so-to-speak. For over ten years they’ve been separated, but he has no idea why. She left seemingly without a trace, and he doesn’t understand/realise that she had to disappear that way, because she WON’T tell him why. She CAN’T tell him why.

Some people just never really get over their first, and none true love. But what was the secret? Her reason for leaving will surely be revealed, but how will he react? Despite the hurt and betrayal, maybe some secrets are best left uncovered.

The attraction and chemistry is still obviously there, but will the secrecy destroy any hope of a happy ending for them? Despite their differences and the unknowns, I think they’re a pretty perfect match for each other. But is that enough for Xavier and Malynda/Isabel to reconnect and sustain a new beginning?

It’s full of emotion – both good and bad, and plenty of drama, uncertainty with underlying love and passion. Fingers crossed for a well-deserved HEA for the both of them. I give this one four and a half stars.

She was from the good side of the tracks, he was from the rough end of town. But they found each other – until she disappeared.
For 12 years, Xavier has been looking for Malynda. He fights for a living - and to help him forget.
When he goes to a charity auction to help raise money the youth centres he is building with his friend, he is sure that he has found her - but the name is wrong? What has happened? Is it really her? Why is she calling herself Isabella?
All Malynda had ever wanted to be was a dancer, and to create beautiful things with color. . But things changed, and Twelve years ago, Malynda had to leave - she cant tell Xavier why. She is an interior decorator now – one of the best.
These two are meant to be together - but will they be able to weather the secrets of the past?

High school sweethearts end with a broken heart..........can there be a second chance?

Xavier is the second book in the A Men of Gotham series. As this is the first book I have read by Dairy Allen I was not sure what to expect. But after reading the book description it piqued my interest so I decided to pick it up and see if the author and I jived or not. Well I did like this book a lot and found the author is able to write well and put together a coherent and fairly tight story-line and interesting characters in Xavier and Malynda, aka Isabella.
If there is another book in this series I will be picking that up to read.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Xavier was deeply in love during his last year in high school, and Malynda was the same. They were poor, but happy. When Maylinda is accepted at a prestigious school for dancing she is excited and moves, knowing that Xavier will come asap to follow her. Then she vanishes and since then he is looking for her. 12 years later, in the present they meet again....
A fantastic story of guilt, shame and misguided love, tragic in many ways, but also understanding with wonderful characters. The book contains a few surprises, that are revealed little by little throughout the book.

This story takes us for the now back 12yrs and pops back and forth throughout that time period. Xavier is a little hardened nowadays but after not getting over losing his first love, this when he was in high school. This is a really good book and one you need time to sit with as you will not want to put it down when you get started. All in all, I highly recommend you read and have it in your Kindle library for re-reading.

Xavier and Malynda were high school sweethearts. Then after graduation she left to go to college in New York. Then she vanishes off the face of the earth with a crummy note that just says it's over. He spends twelve years looking for her. You really end up caring about the characters in this story. What happened? Where did she go?? Need to read the story. So good. Xavier and Malynda (Isabella) had an affair as teenagers, but she went away to college. This is when everything broke down because each was viewing their separation in their own point of view. Twelve years later, they are reunited. Until they could each see the other’s views, this definitely was not going to work. Good read!
