I Fear No Evil #1
Kill The Willing
Magic is back on Earth and there’s money to be made.
It didn’t take long for Shay Carson to figure out that being a hitman isn’t good for a girl’s retirement plans. Time to fake her own death and get the hell out of town. Start over in L.A. with dream job number two – tomb raider in a world just coming to terms with magic.
Just as dangerous a profession but the payoff’s bigger even if someone’s still shooting at her. Good thing this girl has better aim and no problem pulling the trigger.
Ice Witches, buried gold, tech geniuses, arms supplies… and then there’s James Brownstone.

About the author
Martha Carr
584 books783 followersOkay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.
I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.
There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.
Thank you for checking out my stories!

I don't understand the title, but nevertheless, this is a brave attempt to build a book around Shay Carson's former life, before she met/fell for James
Brownstone, by Martha Carr and Michael Anderle and worked as an assassin. Kill the Willing borrows chunks of dialogue from the Brownstone novel where
James and Shay met....while excellently written, this somewhat devalues the spin-off
Apart from that, it's quite engaging and definitely fast-moving.Needing to 'get out of town' when another assassin is hired to complete a hit on her, Shay takes an advertised job as a Laura Croft-with bells on, as a tomb raider.
What does she seek on Oak Island and who is it for? What supernatural creature does she find instead? Can Shay escape with the artefact?
What is special about it?
The answer to these and many more questions will be revealed in Kill the Willing...get your copy today and join the adventure!

Brand new series....Damned good one at that....waiting for next book.
I loved this book. Shay Carson is a assassin turned "tomb raider" that makes Lara Croft look like an angel in comparison. Shay has issues with other people that make her feel isolated...until she saves Peyton who is a computer geek. Shay let's him work for her with reservations. She goes after the treasure on Oak Island from the History Channel....which I watch every time it is on TV. Shay gets into finding magical artifacts...Oak Island...that came from Oriceran when the veil between worlds was open. Shay meets with a new client and learns that she will be working with James Brownstone....a class 6 bounty hunter. Oriceran and Brownstone are other books in Martha's cadre of magical fiction. Can't wait until next book is out.

Excellent
So going from all the books centered on “brownstone” to shay being center stage was great love her relationship with Payton and the realization that she was brand new at. her new tomb raider “job” when introduced to the Professor and the “bounty hunter “ so her books line up with brownstones from this point on. The only thing I would have liked would have been more of shay as a teen and hit man maybe a book 0 for a short story as teen shay? Any way love the adventure can’t wait to read everything about the new universe. I recommend all brownstone’s books and Allison’s too; thus far anyway they are all great and would definitely like to see a movie about “The School for Necessary Magic”

Tomb Raiding at its best!
WOW, what an amazing introduction into Shay Carson, tomb raider. What’s great about this book is you get the background of who she was, that made her into who she is today. The skills she brings to tomb raiding is impressive and if this was made into a movie, could just see all the girls who would want to be like Shay. Like all the books in the Oriceran Universe, this book was hard to put down until finished. Well done Martha Carr!!

What a journey!
After a lifetime working as an assassin, Shay is determined to become a tomb raider. This book follows part of her journey to build her reputation. The story begins with Shay returning to New York to rescue information broker, Peyton, from getting assignated. This starts Shay's story before she has met James Brownstone. So far it can be read and enjoyed even if you have not read the Unbelievable Mr Brownstone series but reading both series increases the enjoyment as they compliment each other. There is some tense action scenes along with the humor which is natural and fun. Really enjoyed reading about Shay and Payton's attempts to form a working relationship that includes Shay's inability to trust anyone. Looking forward to reading more about Shay and Payton along with the other series set in this time period, The Unbelievable Mr Brownstone and the up coming series of Alison's adventures to the magic school. Thank you Martha and Micheal for another great read!

Great read!😀
Great read. I don't leave many reviews but I keep reading the books. You ( Michael and collaborators/co-authors) have given me somewhat of a problem.😕 Too many books to keep track of while reading them in any kind of chronological order. I will admit that I didn't think that was possible!! I will admit to reading them on Kindle unlimited as my budget won't allow me to purchase many books in a year. Please keep up the great work. If you can do so i will promise to read and enjoy all of them.
Please share this with the whole group as everyone is doing a fantastic job!!!!!!👍👍

Waffled between 3 & 4 stars on this, decided to rate up since I'd read more. Read half of this book on Jan 8th and it just didn't stick with me so I shelved it and read the 2nd half on Feb 9th. Kind of funny that I read it on the 8th & 9th (coincidence only) but not of the same month.
Good, not great. Definitely should have read the original series first, was a little lost on the magic part since that was probably revealed and explained in the other series. But not a bad book. Boring at times with not a lot of details, more short excursions to different locales rather than one or two long detailed destinations. I'd read more, hence the 4 star rating.

First up, I love the fact that you guys and gals decided to write about Shay! Thank You, Martha!! To be able to see what's up with the, could you call her a sidekick or maybe partner? These books make for more fun when reading this 2 main character series. I love Shay and James, do I see more than a partnership in the future? Will Alison get her own series too? YOU PEOPLE ROCK.

Enjoyable Companion to Mr. Brownstone
I was never able to get into the Leira books but liked Mr. Brownstone. This book give a look into what Shay was accomplishing to make her a professional tomb raider prior to meeting Brownstone. Looking forward to seeing how the two series intersect.

Another winner
Shay is a complex character, pre-Brownstone, and has an interesting career and a new employee. Can't wait to continue reading her stories, congratulations to Martha Carr!

Loved it, exciting
Loved learning more about Shay. There is find of adventures, excitement, and on the edge of your seat danger. Shay is amazing and Peyton is a puppy who will humanize her.

Great new series
Love this series. Adding background to a secondary Cha rather from another series that is also great. The tie ends to Brownstone is complete Md I look forward to the combined adventures in the future.

Great new book!!!
This was a great spin off book from the James Brown stone Siri’s. It gave you a background look at the character of Shay. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Loved all the action and dark humor.

Another series i have to read!
I haven't found any books by these 2 authors I didn't want more of. Shay is growing past her crappy past, and helping another through his own darktime, while reinventing herself and learning to trust someone else. Not easy. At all.

Great back story
So glad you decided to write Shay’s back story. When you read about a character and they talk about their past you wonder what happened. You have now given us a glimpse into her past. Read to find out her past!!

I was very impressed and happy ☺
I loved reading this book, filled in so many holes and questions about Shay. How she got mixed up Peyton and Brownstone. Also well written that it was a joy to read. If you like a good female lead character or even if you don't, give this a try lol

It was actually very good. I just did not like how they changed point of views. Or I think that is what it was.

Get to know Shay
This is a book full of action but also about the background of Shay the Tomb Raider. It illustrates how hard it is for her to trust people. A very good start

Fascinating!
Martha has given us a wonderful insight into Shay and how she came to be a treasure hunter. There's action, revelations, insight, humour, mystery, and magic. What more could you want?

Shay sure knows how to get things done. Everyone needs their own computer nerd.
She also has good tastes in cars

I really loved this first book of Shay's series.
Having got to know her, after she'd met James, it's wonderful to get a better insight into her earlier character, and her relationship with Peyton.
I could tell, almost instantly, that Martha's hand was in this series. She has a tone to her writing that's quite distinctive and, when she co-authors with Michael, she definitely brings that feminine touch to whatever she writes.
I'm not saying that Michael can't do this - you just have to read his Kurtherian Gambit series, to know he can write wonderfully about both male, and female, characters - but Martha, obviously being female, can give a truly lived insight into the female mind!
When I say that, I don't mean she writes girly, characters, but she's wonderful at writing about truly strong female characters who, if they aren't in touch with their feminine side at the beginning, soon learns that there's just as much power in a lighter touch, as there is with brute force! Lol
I feel that this combined authorship in, I Fear No Evil, as a series, is going to be as much fun for me, as TUMB is, with it being Michael's solo gig, and it's going to be such fun reading them all, plus, the young Half-Drow Princess, Alison's, School of Necessary Magic' series, too.
Now that I know more about the earlier iteration of Shay, it's going to be just as much fun, and even more interesting, to learn eveny more.
To do that, I need to go on to book two of this series: 'Bury the Past, But Shoot it First' - now THAT'S a title to live up to! Lol
So, without wasting any more good reading time, I'm off to start reading it, and I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think about it!

4 Your Must Illustrious And Alluring Imperatrix Of The Galaxy Stars
Kill The Willing is the first book in the I Fear No Evil series by Martha Carr and Michael Anderle.
I missed the no nonsense, heavy on information, background, and techno-jargon so prevalent in Micheal Anderle's writing. One star awarded purely for nostalgia sake. That being said, I still wish more would have already come of this story at this point. We're honestly just getting to the good stuff. Which I honestly should have expected, having already read Death Becomes Her.
Shay is an interesting character to get to know. I hope we find out more about her, besides her obviously high intelligence and penchant for killing. That she is obviously tied to the Mr. Brownstone series only makes me all the happier to have delved into her story.
Peyton is the epitome of eccentric Tech God. His weird outfits only make me love him more. Have to balance out the no nonsense vibe Shay puts out with at least a little weird.
I do wonder how this ties into the artifact hunt from the Leira Chronicles. But it's so distant in the future it leaves me questioning whether it will have anything to do at all with my favorite Jasper Elf, Troll sidekick, and Fixer. Even before Brownstone was mentioned, it became pretty obvious she would have to step into the world of magic and Oriceran if she truly wanted to succeed. I can only wonder if there's a future romance in the making in the next book...

Funny and deadly
I loved this book and am eagerly looking forward to book two. I laughed throughout at her sarcasm and decisions. She is a tomb Raider with a body count. There is plenty of action in this book That kept me flip in the That kept me flipping the pages. There aren't too many books I get through in 1 sitting because I lost track of time. I have not read the brownstone books, but I'm looking for to I have not read the brownstone books, but I'm looking forward to her meeting with him in the next book. We get Peytons POV a couple times. I like the building of I like to building of their friendship and mutual respect. As long as Peyton doesnt have a stroke 1st, this is gonna go well LOL. Loved the h. She is strong but has insecurities, And is physically able to take care of herself without the need of her very own hero. I love strong heroines, that are funny, sarcastic and aren't to stupid to live.

It isn’t often I’m caught by surprise in a book series, let alone multiple ones. Then again this series is a spin-off of a series that I’m currently enjoying. So it isn’t really that surprising that I’m caught by surprise here as well. Kill the Willing is an excellent book.
Taking place just before the first novel in The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone series it gives a little more context to the character, Shay Carson. Also shown is the story of what happened with Peyton. I found out some conversations seem to happen outside the main series that seem pretty important. Thus this series is my current read.
Overall, worth reading by itself, but a must for any fans of the James Brownstone series.

Awesome
I’ve been reading the brownstone series and at the end of the last book Michael mentioned this book. I have already loved Shea from being introduced to her and brownstone series, but I am absolutely loving this series. She is a serious bad ass. She has sass, courage, determination, and she is an astounding fighter and incredibly smart. I’ve enjoyed seeing her background and getting to know her better. I definitely think she and brownstone belong together. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Career Change
Shay, the hitman, is dead. Killed by a highly skilled hitman, herself. She takes advantage of the thwarted attempt on her life to fake her own death. Wanting out of the killer for hire business, but craving danger and challenge, she becomes a tomb raider. Rescuing Peyton brings its own set of problems, but also a tech genus for support. Shay wants to work alone in the field, but then there's Brownstone.

This got better, I have to admit.
I was skeptical of this because sometimes we got Shay's perspective in Unbelievable Mr Brownstone and liked it and wondered how it would go with Martha Carr and Michael Anderle writing it.
Sometimes you can tell where one author ends and another begins (can't differentiate which one ended) It dragged for a while and the writing was occasionally very chunky but towards the end, it was fine for me. This gets a 3 for me because of these flaws.
Shay is amazing!
