About the author

Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. It is about a boy who played on his iPad and then a girl gave him a compass that took him to a man named Bear Grylls on a volcano. He went on on adventure with Bear and learned a lot and then twice the volcano kind of erupted and rocks came flying down and he had to eat a dead sheep that died when the rocks fell. He cooked it in a hot pool with shoe laces they hung over the hot pool to hold the meat. He went back to his camp and gave the compass to another person who goes on a desert challenge.

The kids found it amusing how much the main character in this one kept thinking of his video game throughout. He seemed to learn that life was more than video games by the end of his adventure with Bear and the volcano. My youngest 3 children are still really enjoying these read alouds and looking forward to beginning every one. I think they are learning a little about survival skills, and about relating with people as well. I've been unsure how to rate them, but their ability to hold the kids' interest, even through numerous books in the series, is improving my opinion of them.

This one is great because Charlie learns that real life can be way more exciting than a video game, and how real science is much more entertaining and helps you "get it right" in programming.

We LOVE the Bear Grylls books! A lot like Magic Tree House they are fun fiction combined with nonfiction information. In the Bear Grylls adventures the children have not only a personal challenge to overcome but also an environmental one, learning survival skills along the way!

Easy-to-read, yet interesting and thought-provoking, as Bear Grylls shares great survival tips in a challenging situation. In this story, young Charlie who is addicted to the video game Magma Quest, actually finds himself on the slopes of a real volcano which is blasting off. Luckily, Bear Grylls is by his side. Very enjoyable, and made even more so by the great illustrations by Emma McCann.

This was our first Bear Grylls Adventures story and we all really enjoyed it! I enjoyed that it was a fictional story, but there was still so much to learn about nature and survival in it. My kids ages 4-9 were all engrossed in the story and begged for me to read more each time I stopped reading. A great, clean read aloud for all ages!

Middle Grade adventure!
Charlie is gifted a compass, which happens to be magic and teleports him to a Volcano with Bear Grylls!
Bear teaches him all about volcanos — specifically, how to survive a volcano — from poison gas to volcanic glass to roasting a wild sheep (killed off-screen by a falling rock) inside a boiling pool of sulfur water!

It is a very good book, I love the part when Charlie teleports to the volcano and when the volcano got stuck and burst out very hot rocks and when Charlie and Bear Grylls ate raw sheep

This was a really good book, I think it was cool when Bear and Charlie had to cook meat from the boiling muddy water from the volcano. I also think it is cool when they went swimming through the glacier.

Bowen particularly liked this one! Volcanoes are pretty exciting, haha...I also liked it because Bear’s lesson/the boy’s challenge was to notice and enjoy life OFF of his tablet. ;)

A middle grade series of books about kids learning to work through their personal fears using outdoor solutions. My kiddos got me addicted to these books last month and I wish there were more! Lots of great info in each book not just about basic survival, but about being in the world.
