From the best story tellers of Phalanx Press comes a frightening tale of Armageddon.

It spread fast- no time to understand it- let alone learn how to fight it.

Once it reached you, it was too late. All you could do is run.

Rumored safe zones and potential for a cure drifted across the populace, forcing tough decisions to be made.

They say only the strong survive. Well they forgot about the smart, the inventive and the lucky.

Follow five different groups from across the U.S.A. as they make their way to what could be America’s last stand in the Lone Star State.

W. J. Lundy is a still serving Veteran of the U.S. Military with service in Afghanistan. He has over 12 years of combined service with the Army and Navy in Europe, the Balkans and Southwest Asia. W.J. is an avid athlete, writer, backpacker and shooting enthusiast. He currently resides with his wife and daughter in Central Michigan.

I developed the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot series from notes and ideas I had put together while deployed to Afghanistan. I had been jokingly asked how we would defend against a zombie attack.

I wanted to tell a story that portrays the military that I know, that displays our actual capabilities. These are my thoughts, I hope you enjoy them, and thank you for reading.

First I will say that I freakin’ loved this story! OK, now with that out of the way, here’s why. This is a uniquely written book by five different authors. Yep…five! How they managed to get a story that melded together so smoothly, had to take a stroke of pure genius. Everything went along together so well it’s unbelievable. The characters are so well written and realistic you can’t help but cheer for them as they travel from different starting points when the shtf, to all try and end up in one central location of safety. With the world being overrun by a virus that causes people to turn into crazed killers, it’s not an easy feat for everyday people like you and I to figure out how to stay alive let alone travel thousands of miles without being turned into one of them. Once the journey starts, the action never stops. And believe me, I was literally on the edge of my seat, foot shaking, heart pounding, fist clenched as I read some of the scenes. The road to Texas was anything but smooth and really got bumpy as more people became infected. The ending was somewhat of a surprise to me and the way the book ended left the door open to continue this hair-raising adventure. Yeah, I did have a few choice words when I reached the ending but was not disappointed. This book is filled with 475 pages of pure entertainment. That alone is something special nowadays and I will admit that quite a few things were left undone around my house so I could read…just one more chapter! I definitely am not reluctant to recommend this story to anyone and I don’t do this often but this book has now bumped a book out of the top five on my list of favorite apocalyptic stories. Yes! It is that good!

This was good, which surprised me since it's written by a lot of authors and that can be terrible.

I liked a lot of the characters, there were some that annoyed me a lot but overal a nice cast of characters. Some got more "screentime" than others but it tied together nicely for the most part and I'm interested to see where these authors take this.

The biggest question : are these zombies?
Well yes and no. I'd describe them zombie-esque but not typical stumbling ones.

Revived the genre with this book!

In a saturated market it’s basically impossible to find a good zompoc book, let alone a great one! Well, look no longer! Here’s a fast paced, well developed read that you won’t be able to put down!
I can’t believe several authors had their hand in this collaboration! You can’t tell where one stops and another begins. A true testament to the quality of their work and obvious talent!
Impatiently waiting for more!!!

For a collaboration the story really had amazing flow. The characters were interesting and believable. There were no Rambo's taking on the world. Lots of action throughout but the story was well told and interesting on it's own. I highly recommend this book for fans of the zompoc genre. It is great having input from so many great authors combined in one story.

After a previously unknown virus breaks out in major population centers throughout the US those uninfected seek refuge. Once the virus shows up in areas thought to be safe zones there seem to be few places left to escape. Texas offers the last hope. Or, does it?

Five authors with Phalanx Press have collaborated to bring you Five Roads To Texas. Each author contributes a group of folks trying to survive the outbreak as they travel to Texas. Each group comes from different parts of the US and are very diverse in their makeup.

Regardless of how it’s billed this is a zombie-type book. Though I do not care for zombie stories this was well written and one of the better edited. The only downside was that they often stayed with one set of characters too long. I often had to refresh my memory as they switched to a different set.

This is a very frank novel. It does not hold back in its language or graphic descriptions. It is not for the faint of heart. The pace is varied and moves along quite well. All the characters are well developed. The story has some lightheartedness as well as plenty of heartache.

I am looking forward to the breakout novels that will follow each of the groups separately.

4 out of 5 stars.

An exciting start to new adventures!

I didn't know what to expect with multiple authors writing the story, and I was surprised at how well the story flowed. I admit, I'm a zombie fan, and a HUGE fan of all the authors so it wasn't a big leap for me to love this book. I'll say I'm quite happy for the scene involving the would-be rapist. We just don't see frontier justice done that well in books anymore. Anyway, if you love excitement, adventure, action and...oh wait...ZOMBIES, then pick this up! You'll not be disappointed.

Another great book

Well he’s done it again! This is another great series. Really looking forward to the next books. Interestingly I’d was written by multiple authors and they each get to do complete books now.

Action, Action, Action! This book is simply put a fun read, non stop action with in

I really enjoyed reading this story, it was non stop action with great characters and a very interesting plot plus the fact that five authors combined to write it and did so seamlessly is amazing. I’m so looking forward to reading the coming books that branch out from this one. I highly recommend this book.

This is an amazing collaboration between Phalanx Press authors W.J. Lundy, Brian Parker, Rich Baker, Joseph Hansen, and Allen Gamboa.

The authors take the helm of characters of single, familial, teams, and found allies as they learn of a quickly spreading threat. It's unknown whether a virus or parasite is causing humans to rapidly decline into mindless beings attacking the uninfected.

I love the fact that they share the perspectives of a broad variety of people: gender, age, background, personality, occupations, skills, social status, etc. Don't get too attached, because even the most beloved characters aren't safe.

It offers a rich and unexpected storyline. The pacing is fantastic. At 12 hours, I couldn't listen all in one day - but I squeezed listening in to every spare moment I had. This ends on a cliffhanger in that the time covered is really only the first month of the outbreak. The authors & their characters diverge into a series of individual books that I'm looking forward to. Starting with book 2: Brian Parker's After the Roads.

Narration:
I really enjoyed Andrew B. Wehrlen's narration. As mentioned above he has a huge & diverse cast of characters to work with as well as a wide range of emotions and situations. He delivers a wonderful and consistent performance. I'm thrilled he's narrating the entire series.

CW: Keep in mind that tough topics & situations are explored with stark reality: be aware that vicious attacks, murder, rape, and other brutalities occur.

This was the single best collaboration I have ever read. It was a fantastic read that I finished in two days. I haven't read a book this diligently since the last harry Dresden book came out. It was a fantastic tapestry that at first you think there is no way all these threads are going to fit, but as you read you saw the weave form. I can not recommend it highly enough.

AH-FREAKING-MAZING. !!!!

WHY didn’t they think to collaborate sooner!?!

What a fantastic story! I’m hooked. I cannot wait to continue. I didn’t even want to pause to construct this review lol.

I was just explaining the book to someone yesterday. Remarking how utterly phenomenal the writers all are (and editors) to be able to come together to craft a story that flows - and sounds - like one author wrote it. BRAVA!! But, of course, with these authors, there is no surprise there. Professional writers, & superstars of the genre.

The characters, & character development - incredibly rich. I’m so invested with everyone’s fates. I guess without going on and on, the best thing I can say is- I authentically care. And, in one case, someone is sooooo extremely irritating & can get right under my skin. Well, out of THAT person’s “partnership,” the wrong partner ended up being the one able to ride shotgun into the sunset. Urgh. This character seemed to be growing at the very end, with her/his materialistic focused world now gone, so we’ll see. Fingers crossed. (Seriously. Or I may have to take out some kind of “eye rolling” health insurance.)

Now, a SERIOUS injustice I cannot wrap my mind around... I can’t understand how ALL authors agreed to something -

((((((((( POSSIBLE SPOILER * SKIP IF YOU WANT )))))))))
***********************
- involves the neck snap. I mean, really!?! EVERYONE thought this was a great idea? That it would be .... satisfying? Or were you all tired, had been up all night, brainstorming away, having beers, pizza. Then finally at 4:30am someone sighs & says, “ok, so then ... “ And you all respond, “yep that’ll work, fine, good, sure, we’re outta here...” All the “oomph” had been left behind by 2:45am.. ?? (Maybe after someone suggested doing shots an hour prior to that?? ;) Ok, anyway..lol So, the injustice. I’m not sure ANYONE will be satisfied with what happened? Too.... easy. :/ My wish? “He” shoulda gone with the guys, out into the heartland a ways.... got a reeeal good look & taste of life outside. Then they give him a boot in the tush on a stretch of highway near an urban area, to “continue his research.” ;)
Now THAT would have been quite satisfying indeed. But, alas, I never did receive the email from you all to collaborate with you on this project, so.... :) Maybe next time. Lol
***********************
((((((((( POSSIBLE SPOILER * END )))))))))

The rest of the story- the infected. They have just enough of a unique twist to keep all that has to do with them entertaining and interesting. There’s none of that “zoning out” happening that sometimes occurs when reading yet another same ol’ scene staring the same ol’ type of “zombies”- many times within the same book. That’s definitely not found within this book.

The setting, scenes, and the “show me don’t tell me” skill of the authors- spot on. Once again showcasing the talent of the writers. From paragraph one, you’re drawn in.... transported to another place. Feet on the ground, butt in a boat, or gasping- grasping, while running for your life. Seeing the sights (in 3D living color, wounds on bodies, the many varied roads, tracks, & trails people must traverse), the smells (smoke, blood, cat box, gunpowder), hearing the sounds (accents, different caliber
weapons, munitions, the subtle thump of a body as it’s slowly pulled from a car by an emotional other, the scratching of infected nails on a door screen), all of it.

Finally, the emotional world the authors are able to build in general, and within each individual character. We are privy to the majority of the character’s innermost thoughts & feelings. Then, how their inner workings become expressed in the world. This is an extra special experience as the deftness of hand used by these writers is more rewarding than one is accustomed to finding in other books.

Thus- this is an all around successful collaboration, culminating in one of the very best novels on the market today. Our genre, & I’m going to break it down into MY favorite aspects ;) - military, zombie, apocalypse books, with some “science” and/or “medicine” thrown in as a gold star bonus, would be incomplete without this novel on it’s shelves. And all the series and spin-off books that are to come.

I was beyond excited when I learned of “Five Roads to Texas.” While reading it, I was in apocalypse heaven & only a quarter of the way through I knew already I wished it would never end! Now that it has... my hope is that it becomes one of those great series, that stands head & shoulders above the rest (which it already does as a single), growing to become an empire of novels. As the foundation is here. It’s all here for a long, exciting, bumpy & bloody, emotional, twisting & turning, villains & victors, who knows WHAT could happen with the infected- oh the possibilities!, triumphant - or not, future! It all, & more, awaits....

And I, for one, cannot wait to continue being along for the ride!! So hit it Kinsey! I’ve got yer six, girl!

This is very entertaining collaboration between five authors who write in the Zompoc genre. The authors did a great job tying these stories together. Each story had its own merits and the melding of them all was great!

This book gives the reader everything we have come to expect and enjoy in a Zompoc book. You have some common everyday people who are just trying their best to cope with what is happening, trying to protect those they love. You have a few trained mercenaries who are just trying to earn their pay. There are the expected roadblocks as our protagonists try to reach the safety of a military run zone in El Paso. Evil men out to get whatever they can from a woman travelling by herself and said woman doing what every female hopes she will do.

The authors did not have a problem with killing off some of the characters that the readers are pulling for, which makes it more realistic since not everybody comes out alive. The action is plentiful, but there are some emotional moments as the survivors deal with these deaths.

I loved the addition of Sidney's cat, Rick James. It is not uncommon to have a dog (like Clay's dog, Rufus) in a Zombie book, but this is first time I have come across a cat. I love that Sidney goes to so much trouble to include Rick in her adventure.

The addition of a possible conspiracy by persons unknown adds a new flavor to a genre that sometimes seems stale. This book can be read as a standalone, but it does end without a resolution. I will definitely be reading the stories of my favorite characters to see what happens next.

The narrator did a great job, but he did have a pretty fast pace at times. All in all, an enjoyable book for the Zombie enthusiast.

* My review is for the audiobook format *

The few collaborative fictions I've consumed recently have been less than impressive (exceptions being James A. Corey and most of Sean Platt's collaborations). Five Roads came as a refreshing surprise, and it reminded me to not give up on genres or writing styles that may have disappointed me in the past.

Five Roads is one story told by multiple authors. The beauty lies in just how well the stories and characters have been woven together. It held my interest with an iron grip and kept me guessing. Emotions were raw and uncensored, action was fast and exciting, and justice was served Deadwood-style! No family-friendly language, fluff or filler was found here. Just a post-apocalyptic zombie drama overflowing with butt-kicking goodness! I'm looking forward to more from the Five Roads universe.

Andrew B Wehrlen lends his narrating talents, enhancing the story with lively emotion and a natural voice. Having heard several of Andrew's other narrations, he is clearly progressing in his craft and I would love to hear more from him.

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
Five authors wrote five stories that are all connected to each other via their shared apocalyptic world. All of the stories are written so well and gel so well with each other that it feels hard to believe that five different authors wrote them. The stories are tightly packed and tense through-n-through. There's nothing entirely new that hasn't been told in a zombie story before; and yet, I didn't feel bored while listening to it. A part of the credit goes to the pacing of the story and another part of the credit goes to the narrator.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I can think of.

Narration -
Andrew B. Wehrlen narrated this story beautifully. His delivery set the perfect mood for the world and kept me engaged.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. The actual plot was fairly interesting, particularly at the point we find that there are outside forces really up to no good. There were some characters that I liked and felt had some good potential: Jack, Deena, Ram and Jesse and after a while, Sidney grew on me. The unraveling of society happens at a frightening pace. There are a few writing and grammar errors (e.g. barley instead of barely). I'm not a prude at all but expect crudeness and graphic situations to make sense as part of the story and not be there for its own sake or to make everything feel "edgy"-the plot should do that. There was a lot of gratuitous and non-relevant coarseness. I'm not sure about continuing the series but may read book 2 to see what happens to the remaining characters that I like.

Extraordinary zombie like post apocalyptic series

This is a post apocalyptic series where people become infected and begin biting and killing me mini of those around them. A great cast of characters and a unique and entertaining storyline. Five different authors take five different groups of people from five different areas around the country the beginning of this apocalypse. each person/group have their own unique circumstances and all end up with a very similar goal. As the title states five roads to Texas you can guess where they are all heading. This is action packed intense and unique in its take honest methods. Readon and enjoy. I started reading this book at about 10 o’clock at night and ended up renting it all the way through till about 4 o’clock the next afternoon without sleep. It was that intense.

We follow five groups of apocalypse survivors as they make their way to Texas and perceived safety. That’s the basis of the story, but the characters are what set this tale apart. Five groups of survivors we come to know fairly well, each from a different part of the country, each unique in their backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses. We also benefit from five first-rate authors contributing to deliver one exceptional story. I enjoyed the tale and look forward to After the Roads and perhaps For Which We Stand; further accounts in the tale. Sydney is my favorite..... forgot about Ram until he was talked about towards the end of the novel. Lots of characters..... tried to keep them straight....
The story is amazing. Really interested in how everything will turn out.
Will there be a cure or vaccine? What will happen in the camps? Where will our mercenaries end up. Who will survive because it’s obvious no one is safe. Already started book 2! Yeah more Sydney. (Guess that’s a tiny spoiler, yes she makes it)
Andrew did an excellent job with narration but that’s to be expected, he’s amazing!

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.

A realist zombie series

The story go’s in great length to make the events has realistic for how the world could all change. Do it’s oversized in chacthers that it becomes abit a chore to rember every single one has times some there actions lead to mayor plot points that I had to back a few times to make sure I didn’t forget anything. The last problem I had was the lack of details to how the rest of the workd was effect by infection because only first few chs and the last on show two places and gives hints about outher I hope later novels give perspective on the rest the world in later chs.

Plausible Scenario

This collaboration reads seamlessly! It seems as though the authors coordinated not only their efforts but their styles! The story of quick break down of societal norms and crisis’ in human nature is front and center while survivors undergo desperate journeys to escape a rapid outbreak. It’s interesting to see how they successfully overcome obstacles and how some of the characters face the situation as their set of obstacle bring their journeys to a fatal halt. From extremely skilled mercenaries to coordinate their collective skills, or those who are learning along the way their goal is safety in Texas, but is it really safe?

What do you get when you have five authors collaborate to write a book? Well, in this case, you get action packed, character driven stories that will knock your socks off. You never know when one author takes over the narrative from another as this chilling tale flows so freely and you just can't stop reading because you have to see what's coming next. I'm really looking forward to the reading more stories about these awesome characters to see how they made out. Kudos to all the authors for a job well done. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the zombie/horror genre.

Tense, Pulse Pounding Suspense.

Five stories, while similar, about a seemingly improbable scenario of a pandemic made not of an easily contained virus but of a contagion far worse. Each stretch the normal bounds of reason yet provide the reader the framework of what could, possibly, happen anywhere on earth. The entire concept hinges on the suspected reality that this catastrophe didn't happen by accident; it was planned, in great detail. Find out who started it and why. Read this book! You won't want to put it down!

I read reviews about this book and maybe had my hopes a little high. I wanted the love it and have it be something more than just another zombie book but that is all I got out of it. To be fair, if I had read this years ago I would have probably loved it. As it turns out though it was more of a challenge to finish than a desire to experience the final outcome for me. That kind of bums me out.

A serious run at the genre !

This group of authors is making a serious run at the genre of the zompoc. All of these authors write their parts extremely well. All of the road leading to Ft. Bliss is covered with blood, gore and sadness and not all that start on the trip will make it to the end. If you love this genre buy this book please .. you will not be disappointed .
