The Best of Archie Americana Vol. 3: Bronze Age is a collection of Archie comics from 1980-1999. Each story skewers another pop culture icon, from Michael Jackson to Knight Rider to Robocop and even, yes, the internet toward the end of the book. There are also cover galleries and even introductions, a rarity in Archie books of this kind. 3.5 out of 5 burgers.
As a 1970 baby, this hit all of my nostalgia points: John Travolta, Robocop, Knight Rider, Urban Cowboy, the advent of the internet and home computers, Michael Jackson, MTV....Great stuff. Archie Comics are truly a mirror on our society. Only kinder and gentler....
This volume of the Archie Americana is about the 1980s and 1990s, and I’ve enjoyed this one the most of the 3 I’ve read. The stories were cute and funny, and the pop culture references were great.
I've finally finished this comic book! I love the classic Archie like this one, but the thing about comics without continuity is that there's no pressure to finish them at all! I just read a few stories depending on my mood.
Anyway, this is fantastic. This is the era that I grew up in and how I remembered Archie. Yes, I'm one of those who isn't interested with all the Riverdale-related media.
One of my biggest regrets during the beginning of the pandemic and safer at home was that I had gotten rid of my Archie comics. They were, for me, the ultimate comfort read. Recently, I've been thinking of rebuilding my collection, so I got this book from the library to see if it was a genuine and worthy desire or just something bent of nostalgia.
This collection definitely reminded me of everything I love about Archie comics, but it also made me remember why I no longer wanted to hold on to them. I was happy while I was reading but felt no sense of urgency when I was not. I think if I want to revisit them in the future, I will check out one of these volumes from the library again.
