A really good book that has lots of potential in where the series goes from here. I really liked the characters especially Cassi and Javen they meshed so well together and had really great chemistry. After something bad happened Cassi just wants to know what happened from the start she met Javen who is mysterious and can help her with her goal they fit very well together like 2 pieces of the same whole. So overall I really liked this book this has so much potential going forward I am looking forward to reading more.

This is an AMAZING book!! I have read so much lately that reading seems more like work. With each book I start I am apprehensive that it will be another book to "try to get through". Not this book!! This book was fast beat, intersting, the characters were relatable. There was mystery, a little romance, a few politics, some jaded lovers, some people that would step on anyone to get ahead.. it is wonderful!! Read it, because books should be enjoyable, especially fantasy!

I reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

A breathtaking and exciting opening to a new world, mixing sci-fi and fantasy together in a thrilling YA story.
Cassi did not ask for a place on the journey to basically colonize a new planet. But with her father being in charge of the extra-terraneous development activities and engineering, she has no choice. However, sooner than she expects, an explosion turns her life upside down. Her dad goes missing, her life is levelled to other workers without her having enough info about the daily life on Arcadia, and a strange crystal of Starfire connects her to another dimension, another culture... another person. And Javen might be one of the biggest elements of surprise in her life.
The way this YA tale was written is very unique and brilliant. Telling so much in a few words, hiding emotions and messages between the lines of a captivating story, packed with action, adventure, danger, and deadly secrets. Intertwined with subtle romance, the story rushes forward, busting with action scenes melting into emotional ones and vice versa. The balanced structure of the story brings a very pleasurable reading experience. Despite only getting to know the main characters, the reader might instantly feel as if they knew the main heroes and heroines for ages, immediately building a connection and sharing their feelings or sensations. I truly enjoyed the book and am already waiting to put my hands on book two.

Enjoyed this read

Great new Sci fi concept! There is a lot of teenage angst in this book, so definitely a YA read, but I still enjoyed it, and hopefully the sequel will be just as good

Cassi isn’t one of the many people from earth who are happy to be on a space ship to colonize a new planet, Arcadia. Cassi’s parents are scientists who were instrumental in locating a compatible planet and arranging for the colonization program from crowded Earth. Sadly Cassi’s mother died in an accident so only Cassi and her father, Richard Foster, plan to move into the new settlement. Shortly before landing Cassi inadvertently hears an altercation between her father and his nemesis, the President of the Board, Elizabeth Hammond. They disagree on how to move forward with development on the new planet with Foster seeking to protect the existing culture and Hammond leading the greedy interests to exploit the mines of the planet.

As the colonists prepare to celebrate the landing, an unprecedented explosion kills Foster and others near the speakers’ platform. Hammond refuses to explain what happened, leaving the event shrouded in mystery and leaving Cassi determined to find out if her father is really dead.

Cassi was in the room when the explosion took place. She had just had an encounter with a strange young man with eyes flashing cyan. When she wakes Cassi finds a new friend, Max, trying to help her. But she has a vague memory of the stranger who pulled her away from the fire. Soon she will begin to wonder who she can trust to help her or who will lead to her destruction.

I would describe this as writing clearly geared to young adult audiences and a good beginning for a YA sci-fi thriller series. I did enjoy the sci-fi elements and the alien conflict even though I felt many characters, including Cassi, were not deeply developed. Cassi just assumed some companions were safe to share her secrets with while ignoring that some may well have been seeking to betray her. The romance is a quick crush of young love and light contact which is fitting for YA level. Although I am not pulled in by the romance, I am curious to see what develops as the war among the conflicting colonists and the hidden, conflicted aliens progresses. I would be interested in reading book 2.

Audio Notes: Rebecca Johnson does a good job with the narration. Her voice and reading match the YA characters. The narration made it an easy, quick listen.

I really liked the first series I read by Jenetta Penner so was thrilled to see another one had been written. I read around 20-25 books a month and sometimes I don't get back to authors that I've liked, but I saw and re-read the first book in her first series, CONFIGURED and then saw this series. There's another one out there too, a magical academy series!

In this series we are introduced to a new planet with at least two dimension, a corridor that links the two which is actually another world as well. Phew!

Cassiopeia (Cassi) comes to this new planet, Arcadia, with her father. Before they can disembark the ship that brings them here from earth there is an explosion and her father disappears. He is one of the founders of the new city on this planet as well as a go-between the people's of the two dimensions. Without her father, the established government sees her as nothing more than a teenager with few skills valuable to them - well, until they look deeper into her background and see she's been working with her father on terra-forming.

Behind all of the things going on is a crystal called the Starfire. Cassie wears one around her neck that she found in her father's coat and it gives her the ability to see the people from the other dimension when they are in her dimension but cloaking themselves. One of them, Javan, saves her from the explosion and something happens between them. Now, this was strange - they were drawn to each other as she's never been drawn to anyone - yet, is it real or is it the crystal making it happen?

I liked this story, although at times Cassi was the immature 17 year old that she is, thinking she has all the answers and wanting to act before thinking things through. I wanted to grab her a couple of times and remind her that she didn't know everything - listen too! But overall, a very good story.

There isn't a lot of time spend on describing the world she is in, but enough is said that I can picture it, as well as the people in the story. I don't like descriptive stories where paragraphs are spent on describing something - this story just keeps moving on, fitting descriptions into the action - that I like.

This is a clean read, although there is a lot of kissing in it.

The Starfire Wars 1
Cassiopeia Foster was named for the stars. But all she wants to do is run back home to Earth.
Arcadia is Earth’s salvation…the only hope to save the dying planet. Traveling as one of the first wave to the new planet is a great honor – so says Cassi’s father. She might think so too if it also didn’t mean abandoning her dead mother’s memory for a new life.
So, when terrorists attack, and tragedy strikes again… her father is killed. Cassi finds herself terrified and alone on a strange world. Everything she thought she knew about Arcadia was a lie. Instead of salvation, war looms in the stars.
But if she reveals the cover-up, she could end up dead, too.
Then she meets Javen. He’s gorgeous, mysterious, and undeniably dangerous. And as the two of them flee for their lives, questions burns in her mind…
Can Javen be trusted?
Or will he kill her, before she can reveal the truth.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Cassi finds herself on a journey to a new world with her father after her mother’s death. Cassi’s father created the science to teraform their new home into a perfect wold, but be careful with what you wish for. Cassi stumbles upon a meeting that pits her father against their leader making Cassi wondering what was going on. But before she could ask her father about it tragedy struck leaving Cassi alone. That is just the beginning of Cassi’s adventures. Instead of giving up she is determined to find out what happened in spite of the cost.

Arcadia may be humanities last hope, but there are secrets that Arcadia is keeping and Cassi somehow thinks her father might have been at the very core.

This is an incredible saga of a series and it has just begun. Cassi finds allies in the most unexpected places and possibly a love for all time. This audio-book brought the characters to life as the story unfolded.

This book had a little bit of everything - a rich new world in outer space, star-crossed lovers, a riches-to-rags tale, evil corporate greed, and a parallel dimension similar to that in faerie lore. Cassiopeia, or Cassi for short, is the daughter of the brilliant scientist and terraform expert responsible for the migration of Earthlings to a beautiful untouched planet called Arcadia. On the evening before her transport ship arrives with the first settlers on the new world, tragedy strikes when there is a horrible explosion and her father disappears. Now that she is on her own, she loses her privileged lifestyle. She is placed in a dorm with a roommate and told she must earn her keep. She meets a mysterious boy with whom she makes an immediate connection and finds an even more mysterious crystal that her father left behind. As she tries to unravel the truth about the accident and the fate of her father, she discovers a sinister plan that will devastate her new home in an attempt to save her old one.

The entire book is told from Cassi's point of view, and we accompany her on her search for answers. We are immediately drawn into her world, and we trust the characters she trusts and despise the ones she despises. From the ambitious but slimy boy who is assigned to keep an eye on her, to the brilliant roommate who fought prejudice and class inequality for her spot on Arcadia, to the rebellious best friend who will do anything to help her, everyone she meets plays an important role in her story. And, of course, there's the tall, dark, and handsome stranger with whom she experiences an irresistible pull. There's a fast moving plot with lots of action and intrigue, but in the end it's the characters who make this book impossible to put down. Cassi isn't just our main character, she's our friend, and we're just as desperate for answers as she is.

I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.

Cool Sci-fi Vibe

This first novel in the Starfire Wars series contains a literal world of the author’s invention. Earth is sick, and a new planet has been discovered and prepared for human habitation prior to the arrival of the first settlers. The heroine is the daughter of the brilliant couple behind the preparation of this new home, but is now reliant on her dad, as her mother has died. Cassi is assured of a comfortable, luxurious life on the new planet because of her dad’s involvement with the discovery and terraforming of their new home, but she is soon to discover that he has an enemy in the colony’s leader. When tragedy strikes, Cassi is ripped from the life she anticipated and thrust into a new role: advocate for and ally to the alien beings who, unbeknownst to all but the top tier of Earth-originating leaders, already call this planet their home. Her special connection with one young alien man in particular and her possession of her dad’s chunk of Starfire, a native stone which powers the alien culture combine to make Cassi the best hope of the original inhabitants against the greed and corruption of the woman who leads the Earth colony with a merciless hand. Starfire has magical regenerative qualities that might just undo some of the catastrophic damage humans have wrought on Earth. It’s up to Cassi to find a solution that will allow both peoples to coexist in harmony, while trying to find a way to begin healing the Earth she left behind. This novel is very close to a five-star read; I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I'm sad to say I didn't enjoy this book much and DNF. I didn't like the female lead. She was a snob, and her mental voice wasn't my cup of tea. Especially when she frowned about unwashed dishes in her new roommate's sink. I mean... really???? And she complained about how small the place was (in her head), when it sounded about 3x the size of most single people's first apartments! It was bigger than the place I lived with my husband and baby and I thought I was the luckiest person ever.

She also turned hot and cold on a dime. Especially with poor Max. For people not minding being in a self-absorbed teenager's head, you might like this. If you're looking for a mature lead, this will frustrate you as it did me.

Despite being presented with the opportunity of a lifetime, she was "uninterested" and made sure her father knew this. She was even moping when he asked her to travel down with him on one of the first shuttles. She wasn't even excited enough for his sake! What a miserable daughter to have.

Then they didn't even deem it necessary to have a formal mourning for the presumed dead, everything was shrouded in mystery when people DIED?! Sorry, but the majority of people would've revolted and demanded at least SOME sort of explanation and SOME sort of ceremony or gathering. He was apparently esteemed liked an well-known! It just didn't ring true how it played out.

Then when I read the word "cyan" for the hundredth time, I decide to call it a day.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge scifi books fan, so going into this story I was a little hesitant. I was pleasantly surprised to fine that I actually really liked it! Usually I find stories that take place in space and/or a different planet to be boring, but this one kept me interested in what was going to happen.

Cassi is on her way to Arcadia, a new planet that her father help to discover and bring people over to establish a new colony. When explosion occurs during a gala before going on the surface that ends either killing or causing her father to go missing, she quickly has to adjust to not only a life without him but also on a new planet. She discovers that they are not alone on the planet and quickly develops a relationship with one of the planet's inhabitants whose name is Javen. Elizabeth Hammond, the official chosen to run Arcadia, is not as she seems and truths about her threaten not only Earth but also Arcadia and its pre-existing people.

I enjoyed the fact that it tied in very real world problems such as classicism (and basically racism though not really focused on but implied) and globe-warming. Definitely excited for the next installment!!

I received this book as an advanced reader's copy by the author for my honest review.

The good, the bad, and the hope

The rundown:
The premise of this book is something like twilight meets avatar (the james Cameron one). Cassiopeia is a young woman who has lost her mom and is now hurtling towards a new earth with her father. Tragedy strikes and Cassie know finds herself trying to figure out what happened. An unexpected love connection , a funny best friend, and a mission to save earth and her new friends from destruction ensues.

The good:
The author does a good job Describing the multi dimensional world and their interactions. And I really enjoyed the basic premise of the story.

The bad:
I found it dull at times and the romantic triangle + 1? Is confusing to say the least and predictable. The “bad guys” are 1 dimensional and just obsessed with money and power. I was hoping that there would be more in the book honestly finish too quickly.

The hope:
Here’s to hoping that the author in the rest of the series develop the “bad” characters a bit more, Clarifies up the confusing love triangle +1, And in general differentiate this world for that of avatar.

When Ms Penner sent out the 1st chapter of the new series I was intrigued. I was offered a chance to read this ARC at no cost from the author, it is definitely worthy of a 5 review. I knew once I opened my copy of Starfire I would not be able to stop, so had to wait a few extra days to get my time cleared so nothing would interrupt me. I was immersed within a few minutes into the story. Since this is told from Cassiopeia POV, you learn quickly of her love of her parents, loss of her mother and her quest to find out what really happened. In Starfire we are right there alongside her and her friends for the ride to find out the truth and understand why her parents cherished Arcadia. As with all great stories, I was left with OMG moment after the last sentence. Now I must sit anxiously awaiting for the next book in this series Dark Matter, so I can continue this journey with Cassi, Javen and her friends to unlock the mysteries in this new world. This is a new and refreshing perspective of sci-fi, one you will not want to miss out on.

I enjoyed the storyline and characters in this new series by Jenetta Penner. Cassiopeia has spunk and a fight in her that will be interesting to see evolve throughout the other books in the series. I can’t put my finger on the personalities of some of the other characters, but perhaps it’s written that way, so it keeps me guessing as to their motives and future moves. I admit to being a lover of the romance dynamic in books, so I would have liked to see Javen a bit more swoon-worthy, but in sticking to a true sci-fi type nature, I feel this book does the genre justice. Cassiopeia might have to be a little more convincing and persuasive for the Alku’s survival, but all in all, a nice start in this book.

I felt the description makes it sound a bit more fast-paced and driven than I personally felt it was, but was still great to read. It was an easy and quick read, just not quite as “action driven” as I might have initially thought. Some could disagree and maybe it was just my mood when reading it because it was enjoyable, nonetheless!

Narrator does a good job and fits the main character’s personality. She did a good job of giving different variations of her voice to help distinguish the characters.

Love this premise! New planet, magic crystals, and a mystery guy that others don’t seem to see! I love all of that! Cassiopeia (Cassi) is traveling with her father to a new planet that is compatible with the humans of Earth. Unfortunately, something happens to Cassi’s father and the leadership isn’t fully trustworthy, so there’s lots of shady things going on. There’s also something strange going on with the new planet. Cassi sets out to discover the secrets being held, but it’s not going to be easy. Loved her tenacity! She fights for what’s right; even when it’s dangerous to herself. There’s some romance going on too, which I really enjoyed. Love that soul connection type stuff. Really enjoyed the whole adventure of the story. I love the sci-fi elements too. Looking forward to the next book for more of the story!

A fun, entertaining story!

Great YA sci-fi romance!

I don’t usually read YA novels, but something about this book appealed to me. The story takes us into a new world, as Earth is so damaged by humans that it is in danger of dying. One of the lead scientists going to the new planet has a secret. His daughter Cassiopeia is the heroine in this story. She’s not excited about relocating to the new planet. Then tragedy strikes as a bomb goes off just before they disembark to go down to the planet surface. Waking up four days later, Cassi can’t seem to get anyone to tell her what happened to her father and the head of the new planet government is cold and hiding something. The Starfire crystal she found in Her dads jacket brings in a whole new element, in the form of a boy named Javen. Racing to save both planets, they have a lot of action. Be forewarned this book ends on a cliffhanger! Looking forward to next book, Dark Matter!

I really enjoyed Starfire by Jenettea Penner.
I became a fan of her writing after listening to The COnfigured Trilogy. Penner gives you female characters that you can relate to and get emotionally invested in. Starfire is no exception. YOu follow Casseopiea as she and her father travel to a new world to create a new life for humanity. Cass is surprised to enjoy her life until a group of terrorists attack and everything she knows is slipped upside down.
The narrator is perfect for the character and doesn't bore you or overdo the emotional. This makes for a pleasant listening experience.
overall, I loved the story. It was unique and the romance wasn't overly cheesy or present. It worked well with the story.
I would encourage other YA fans to have a read or listen to this book. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
I received a free copy from th3 author, but all opinions are my own.

Once things began to really heat up, I found it easy to slip into the story. They mystery of what was really happening kept my interest. Cassi was easy to like. She had quite a bit of growth in this story. I like that she's brave when she has to be, kind to most people until she's given a reason not to be, and has a clear sense of right and wrong. She is a little too impulsive, but that's in keeping with her character. I hope to see more character development in those around Cassi. I didn't quite feel like I understood her friends and enemies as much as I would have liked. Hopefully that will come in the next book.

Though there are plenty of loose ends left at the end of this book, the story does reach a good stopping place. I'm looking forward to what comes next.

I got to listen to this at the courtesy of the author in exchange for a review. First, I thought the narration for the audiobook was well done. I can’t say she was my favorite narrator, but she did a fantastic job of giving each character a distinct voice, and the can cover a multitude of other things in my book.

I really enjoyed this story. It’s a little like the movie Avatar: greedy humans plundering a new planet to the detriment of its original inhabitants. But I really enjoyed the skews that took it in a slightly different direction! I won’t say what, because I don’t want to ruin it for you.

The book is fairly short, so it’s an easy read, and there is plenty of action to keep you invested in what is happening. I’m really looking forward to seeing the next book and how the characters and story continue to develop.

Cassiopeia Foster and her father are traveling from Earth to Arcadia, an uninhabited Earth-like planet, for a new start. Richard is the head terraformer. Just before they arrive, Cassi overheard her dad talking to his staff about new information he has, which could change things. But President Hammond, leader of the colony, won’t listen. As they’re about to disembark, there’s an explosion and her father disappears. Why won’t Hammond release any information about it? Cassi discovers a crystal in her dad’s coat pocket. Somehow it seems to be connected to the planet, and an unusual boy, whom only she can see. What’s really going on? I hit the end of the book, and just about screamed NO!!! with frustration when I realized it was the end! Looking forward to book two!!!

Fun book!

This was a fun book with a cliffhanger at the end.

The mysterious Alku are interesting interdimensional peaceful creatures, who have to ask the question should they let themselves die or do they fight for survival.

I found Cassi to be an interesting main character, albeit a bit too trusting and at times a bit too down on her abilities. Perhaps bit too naive at times. In the beginning she was doing studies on her own and never took the time to meet anyone else on the ship.
I do realize they were all working, but a confined space will force you to meet people at some point even if you choose not to get to know them well.

The journey was fun and I am looking forward to the next book.

Read The Illusion of Truth series instead.
I actually did not finish this book. I made it a little more than halfway but, (with the exception to the cool worldscape) I was really surprised by the reviews that influenced me to even read it in the first place. The main character had me cringing several times. I understand that given her circumstances in relation to the plot she was inclined to feel a certain way but the way she expressed herself sounded so cheesy and again, cringe. And I can deal with a character being naive for a little bit but she was way too trusting of the people around her (or maybe I’m too guarded). Either way I couldn’t continue and this book is not one I would recommend.

This is a sci-fi adventure that takes you to the planet Arcadia, which is basically Earth 2.0
Our main character Cassi, doesn't really want to be there but since her father is the head of the project, she really has no choice. Once they reach the planet, chaos ensues. There's an explosion on the ship, and Cassi's father disappears. Cassi decides to investigate and meets a guy who may have the answers she's looking for. The guy is Javen, a native Arcadian....and the people now in control of Earth's new colony don't want anyone finding out about these native Arcadians, called Alku. If you liked the movie Avatar and like exploring new planets, this is the book for you!

Jenetta Penner brings a fresh new aspect to the sci-fi genre!

In this novel, Cassi Foster is a girl traveling with her father to a new world. After an explosion leaves her alone, Cassi must delve into treasonous territory in order to find the truth. On her search she connects with a mysterious ore called Starfire.

Reminiscent of Atlantis, this was a wonderful story. Even the small lulls in action were informative and interesting. The setting was rich in detail, and all of the characters are well formed and written.

I cannot wait for the next one!

I received a free audiobook from the author.

This was a great start to the series and I really enjoyed the premise. It was interesting to figure out the world setup as the story progressed. Good overall pacing with a lot going on.

I am not a big fan of love triangles (or whatever shape this one ended up being), but there are enough plot points besides the awkward flirting to make the book a good read.

Well-written and unique. I was completely hooked when the "secret" of Arcadia was revealed. It was a fascinating concept and I like the direction the series is taking.

Nice alternative planet concept

I enjoyed this book but was sad that it was so short. It’s says the typically reader finishes in 4 hours 23 minutes or so. I like the premise of the book with inhabitants on Earth seeking to live on another planet because of pollution. The only reason I didn’t give this book five stars is because a few of the characters were not developed enough for my liking and the main character didn’t always react to her situation in a way that seemed plausible. Still, it was a good read and if I were younger, I probably would have nothing but nice things to say about it.

A YA scifi-fantasy novel with a hint of dystopian and mystery. Unputdownable. A well written, fast-paced adventure.
Cassi and her father are on their way to start a new life on another planet. Tragedy strikes and Cassi finds herself alone. What is going to happen to her? It's not long before she discovers a new reality and uncovers secrets and plots. There is also a mysterious boy who Cassi feels a connection with. Intriguing stuff!
Can't wait for the next installment!

Starfire has it all - a story that many young adult readers will enjoy! It has adventure, romance, magic, aliens, and more! The story moves quickly with interesting characters and a well-developed plot. The romance happens a bit too quickly for my taste, but there's nothing beyond kissing. Since this is the first book in a series, it doesn't have a proper ending. You'll have to stick around to find out what happens next!
