I have known Jennifer for a few years and have always been a bit in awe of how prolific she is as a content marketing writer. I've been a freelance content marketing writer for about five years, and have found success in it. Yet, no matter how many times I see Jennifer present at conferences, or how many of her blog posts I read, or how many in-person conversations I have with her, I always gain great concrete, how-to tips I can implement immediately. This book is no different. It takes the best of her blog and expands it, creating a game plan for how you can expand your business, gain more clients, charge more money and be successful—however you define success. I plowed through this book in about five days, taking notes and using it to update my current marketing plan. I recommend it for every freelance writer, no matter if you are new to the business or have been writing for 20+ years.

Excellent!
The first three chapters run through some general freelancing information that would be helpful to those starting out as content marketers. The latter half of the book contains some excellent brass-tacks advice for maximizing the profitability of your book of business - including ways to tactfully push back on clients that are being unreasonable, and how to avoid working with them in the first place.
I also liked the emphasis Jennifer put on the mental aspects of the "freelancing" game (staying motivated during difficult periods, the important of perseverance, etc) and how open she was about the ups and downs on her own journey towards success. This is the first freelancing-related book I've read that actually provided value - and the ballpark rates that the author provided have "upped" my own income in a short space of time.
I also strongly recommend joining the Facebook group - tons of helpful advice and support from fellow freelance content marketers!

In her blog post and in professional writers group, Jennifer has always been generous with her time and great advice. Even with more than 20 years under my belt as a freelance writer, I am learning new and valuable information and actionable tips in this book. Changes I made to my freelance writing business on Jennifer's blog advice already helped me land new clients. Content marketing writer isn't what many people think it is (it's not p.r. or copywriting) and Jennifer explains how even strict journalism writers (like my former self) can add or transition to content marketing writing.
As with running any business, it's what you put into it and Jennifer makes that clear. She also provides the tools and the insight for those folks who are motivated to build their writing business with content marketing writing.

Gregory has written a gripping, tell-all when it comes to making lots of money as a content marketing writer. She reveals all her strategies, warts and all. Besides that, she tells you exactly how to achieve the success that she has, what her monetary goals are, and to add the best topping of all, she offers everyone who wants one, a free 30-minute call with her to discuss what you want to achieve and how to do it. Gregory is an all-around nice person who wants to help those starting out in this industry and those who’ve encountered some stumbling blocks. If writing content is on your to-do list, this is the manual for you to read over and over again and do the hard work the author suggests.

I'm about to go through it a second time and thoroughly employ her recommendations.

Essential and extremely helpful guide!

Jennifer Goforth Gregory’s The Freelance Content Marketing Writer is an essential guide for anyone looking to build a sustainable, profitable freelance writing career. I found this book incredibly helpful and comprehensive—packed with actionable advice that’s both strategic and practical.

What I especially appreciated was Jennifer’s “real talk” approach to income, pricing, and the business side of freelancing. She doesn’t sugarcoat the realities of the industry but instead provides clear steps on how to find clients, determine rates, and set yourself up for long-term success. Her tips on identifying your niche, pitching effectively, and managing client relationships were particularly valuable.

Incredible Resource!

I was expecting a typical self-published book filled with typos and rehashed advice from a million other blog posts but every chapter of Jennifer’s book was filled with clear, actionable advice that made me feel like I really could re-start my freelancing career, and avoid many of the pitfalls that tend to come with this kind of work. I don’t know Jennifer, and I just stumbled across her book while trying to figure out if freelancing was a viable option for me, but I wish I could give her six stars because this book has so much great advice in it — highly recommended.

Three-line review: Filled with actionable advice and brutal honesty, this book is written by a content marketing pro for people who want to become content marketing pros. Gregory has always been generous about sharing her experiences, and this book compiles all of her insight — about marketing, client issues, payment and contracts, pitching, and more — in a single place. I don't work much in content marketing anymore, but a lot of the information in this book is useful for anyone managing their own writing career.

Full disclosure: I've known Jen for years as a fellow member of the American Society of Journalists & Authors. I bought her new book knowing it'd be chock-full of great information for both new & seasoned freelance writers & I wasn't disappointed. If you want a non-sense book w/ actionable plans to put in place today to help you achieve your content marketing writing goals, it's a great book to read & reference often.

This was a good and thorough guide to how to get into content marketing and start a content marketing writing business. However, I have not road-tested the lessons and I'm not sure that I will. The book made it clear that starting with a technical expertise and industry connections would be an enormous help when it comes to finding profitable work. However, there's a lot here that can be useful to any writer moving into the field of content marketing.

This is well written and very clear and encouraging and informative. It’s really well structured, really well done, really well produced book. I really hoped when I read it that launching this career was as doable as she made it look.

Reader, it is not. I have followed her instructions and not landed a single gig despite lots of journalism clippings and an MFA in creative writing. And now it’s the pandemic, so I doubt I ever will. But your mileage may vary.

Excellent advice

Exceeded my expectations. The content was well focused, providing concrete examples about what works and what doesn't. I didn't expect how warm and genuine Jennifer was in talking about her own experiences including the miscalculations and mistakes as well as the successes. Well worth reading.

I've been a content writer for a few years. I wish I read this book sooner as it would've been so helpful to me as a newbie! Nevertheless, it's filled with helpful information and ideas that I think all content writers should hear, no matter their experience level. I recommend this book to everyone who is a content writer or is hoping to become a content writer!

This book has many useful tips for the writer who want to increase their income. For each part, the author give a lot of advices, yet few detail example attached. It's quite difficult for beginner or some people to visualise. And that's the only thing that I don't like.
