The Konstantinov is dispatched to help quell the uprising in the province of Nokgorka, and Skymarshall Urik Antares is ordered to send ground troops into the city of Bahamut. When her friend is killed in action, Sorceress-Major Maya Antares enters Bahamut to find the body - and perhaps be reunited with her friend and with her long lost husband.
Volume 1 of The Red Star was a sumptuous collection of widescreen imagery and concepts, transforming revolution and totalitarianism into highly charged landscapes and inductrial furnace ships, and combining hand-drawn and computer-aided artwork long before it was fashionable to do so. Chris Gossett and Brad Kayl, along with a team of CAD designers, took that collection up a notch with Nokgorka - new iconic characters, massive double-page spreads, hand-to-hand action, all assembled into a stunningly coloured and laid-out glossy book. Awe-inspiring stuff, and criminally under-appreciated too. I think I've said that once already, and by gum I'll keep on saying it. Find a copy somehow, and see for yourself.
Although first published in 2000, I thought I would take a moment to recommend the comic series The Red Star because who couldn’t use a bit of storytelling about resistance against the Russian government at this moment in time? I very much enjoyed by reread of it this year. Hopefully, 2025 will see an end to the unjustified attack on Ukraine. Until then, here is a story of resistance in a universe with magic and flying battleships.
While I love the science, tech, Russian revolution fusion, the writing is a train wreck to decipher. I didn’t read volume 1 which may be a problem. Still, the vagueness of so many ideas, characters, and actions leave the reader frequently lost and annoyed. The story can’t still and breathe fo a moment - this is its greatest weakness. Nice art overall. I’d read all of the other volumes if they were in the 80% off clearance bin. Beyond that, there’s greater stories to discover.
What took so long to read is that I found out the this takes place after certain comic issues that are not included within the collected Hard Cover issues, and really wanted to read the series in order. So after tracking them down I finally read this awesome, epic and have enjoyed it thoroughly. The missing issues are as follows:
Issue #5 - from POV of the workers really could have been skipped because it does not feed into the main mythos, but does add elements to the wars.
Annual #1 - Run Mikita Run, adds the back story to the little girl that becomes a main character moving forward. I would recommend this reading before getting this volume.
